Explore the Captivating History of the Culper Ring!
Spying and warfare have always gone hand-in-hand. From Julius Caesar to modern generals, we have accounts of commanders covertly gathering information about their opponents, ensuring they have the intelligence they need to conduct a war.
George Washington was not late to realize he needed a spy ring to defeat the British in the American Revolution. So the Culper Ring was created, and their work during the American Revolutionary War was carried out in the shadows, often informally, and with a great deal of care for secrecy. Anyone caught spying was liable to be hanged by the British.
Based in New York during the British occupation, the Culper Ring provided vital intelligence from behind enemy lines. Their work gave Washington an insight into the British forces and their plans. They helped to turn the war in the revolutionaries' favour. And now their story can be told once more.

I wouldn't recommend this if you know nothing about the Culper Ring. This was more of a speedrun through the history; so, it's a great review for someone wanting to refamiliarize themselves with the information. Note: I listened to the audiobook, so I have no idea if this book contains a bibliography. I also have no idea if said bibliography has a good array of sources.
Interesting book. I live out by Setauket Long Island. There are markers for Washington's Spy Trail everywhere. Although I enjoyed it, the author left alot out, especially about Anna Strong Smith and how she used to hand clothes on the line to let them know it was safe. Nor did they go into Battle of Setauket where there was alot of fighting around the Presbyterian church, by Colonel Simcoe. Abraham Woodhull is buried in this church. It gave alot of information on their successes which was great. They believe they know who agent 355 is, even though she is not mentioned in the book.

The Culper Ring by Captivating History offers an engaging introduction to one of the most fascinating spy networks of the American Revolution. If you’re looking for a fast-paced and accessible overview of how George Washington’s spies helped shape the outcome of the war, this book delivers.
The story of the Culper Ring is full of intrigue—covert messages, invisible ink, secret identities—and this book captures the highlights in a way that’s easy to digest. It’s a great starting point for anyone curious about early American espionage without wanting to dive into a more academic text.
That said, the book sometimes feels more like a summary than a deep dive. It moves quickly through the material, which keeps things from dragging but also means it skims over some details I would’ve loved to explore more. The writing is straightforward, though at times a bit dry or repetitive.
Overall, it’s a solid read that piques your interest and might inspire you to look further into the lives and strategies of America’s first spies. Great for history buffs who enjoy bite-sized historical storytelling with a dose of espionage.
3.5 stars. It was hard to build a spy ring from scratch and the first attempts didn't work so well. Then the Culper Ring was started and it did get the information needed. However it was hampered by lack of funds and security. This almost cost them and they had to lay low. The speed of communication hampered things as well. I personally believe that the Culper Ring was successful as much as they were able to be.
I really good book about a fascinating piece of American history. In my opinion this book is just the right length. I imagine a lot of the details and specifics of a spy ring that operated over 200 years ago are hard to find and put together, but from what's available it makes for a good story. I'd love to read others in the same series now.
This was a succinct summary of the most important spy ring run by George Washington. It tells about its successes and failure, as well as challenges that faced it in communication and security. It is a very easy read and I found it fascinating. Anyone interested in the history of espionage or the American Revolution should read it.
An interesting and enjoyable read! For me it filled in some details I had not known. I wish it had included the details of the demise and death of Benedict Arnold.
This is a very informative and quick read. It brings a concise telling of what the Culper Ring was doing and in its way encourages the reader to desire wanting to research more.
Basically reads like a Masters thesis, but I enjoyed it 😊 Best part is in get conclusion where they’re basically like “there’s so little known about the culper spy ring, cuz they were that good.” 😂😂
Fans of Turn or Revolutionary War history will enjoy this short read. It’s the bullet point explanations of the real Culper spy ring (Turn was an excellent series but obviously took some creative liberties with the story and characters). My one issue with this book: it repeated the line that Woodhull was the “heart” of the Culper spy ring yet the book otherwise read as if he was just one of a number of the couriers. The book needed a few more pages explaining if and why Woodhull was the heart of the spy ring.
