2.Dünya savaşının farklı bir bakış açısını görüyoruz kitabımızda. Cephede savaşan, kan yağmur çamur karda uğraşan askerlerin hayatlarına tanıklık etmiyoruz. İstihbarat ve karşı propaganda tümeninin işlerine tanıklık ediyoruz. Başrolde genelde Teğmen Yates ve Çavuş Bing var. Reklam, propaganda, radyolardan nazi askerlerini ve sıradan Alman halkını etkileme çalışmalarını okuyoruz. Askerler arası hırs çatışmaları, karaborsa, direnen sivil kuvvetler, casuslar, yardakçı siviller, iş adamları vs.genel olarak konular bunlar. Olaylar kronolojik değil ve bol bol zaman atlamaları var. Zaman zaman konular dağılıp siyasi işler sıksa da genel olarak belgesel roman kimliğiyle değerli bir eser fikrime göre. Okunmalı.

A great neglected novel, probably one that the American public has abandoned because it presented an embarrassing image of the war the Americans fought in Europe from 1944 to 1945... something that should be reconsidered now, after the two Iraq wars and Afghanistan and other not-so-glorious feats... written by a German Jew who had emigrated to the States to save his own life, learned English, became a psychological warfare specialist, fought with the US Army in France and Germany...

Vor über 25 Jahren habe ich "Nachruf" von Heym gelesen, seitdem stand Crusaders auf meiner Leseliste. Hat sich gelohnt, das Buch packte mich nach wenigen Seiten. Ob es auch funktioniert, wenn man die Lebensgeschichte von Heym nicht kennt? Ein beeindruckender Erzähler war er auf jeden Fall, die Crusaders waren beim Erscheinen nicht umsonst ein Bestseller.
