Such ridiculous premise... Unbelievably!
Still, I enjoyed this apocalyptic world populated with all kinds of legendary creatures.

So this was awesome and fun! This starts out a little slow, the usual first book world building drill. But it wasn’t tedious to get through, it was still interesting. Then once we met Adonis, I knew I was sold.
The last half or so of this book really picks up the pace, and I was really trying to figure out what was going on and what all these characters were after. I love Adonis so much, seriously he is life. I hope I get what I want in the second book, I feel like I’m going to. There’s only one way to find out, off I go read it!

Neither the world nor h kept my attention. The most interesting part of the story was Adonis. Cliffhanger ending. Will not continue the series & I’ve come to the realization this author may not be a good fit for me.

This was around 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. It was pretty interesting but I felt like it left a lot to be desired. Maybe it was too short for this kind of story. I’ll probably read the next one soon though.

Looking for an apocalyptic book where Angels, demons, fae, and dragons exist? If so then you need to try this book out. Fans of The Mortal instruments will likely enjoy this book.
Angel's and Dragons have descended and are looking to kill off the wicked humans or so they are told by the higher up. One fae girl stands in the angels way of finishing off the world completely. Ruby will find a way to destroy the angels if that is what it takes but first she must infiltrate their home to figure out their game plan. In the process she finds more than she expects while also being able to have plenty of food so that she has enough strength to make sure she has the magic to fight back and stay glamoured. Although Ruby seems to find things she loves about the angels home she doesn't let that sway her to believing that they don't have other plans at hand. Along the way she finds a very unlikely ally.
This book had just the right amount of action for the storyline, and just a sliver or romance which I am hoping will blossom a bit more in book 2; Ruby definitely deserves love. I really found this book to be quite entertaining and I am glad I got to read it.

The fae in this world were fallen angels that turned into beasts. Yeah I know, it’s weird. The only magic Ruby, a fae, had was glamour. Cool but not the most exciting magic ever. I’m not entirely sure how the fae beast thing worked. Most of the time she was human, but she always seemed to be glamoured. I’m not sure what her natural form was. What makes the switch from one form to the other wasn’t clear.
It was an original world. It was a new take on the fae although not one I particularly cared for. It was so outside the realm of normal fae mythology that it didn’t feel like fae at all. There were demons, but they had next to no page time. Dragons were mentioned a fair amount but were not an active part of the story. There was a new spin on the angels and gods.
Ruby was on a mission to save her sister. She aligned with a human organization determined to take down the angels. The goal was for her to infiltrate the angel stronghold and spy on them. For her role as a spy to be believable, she was supposed to do evil things and hate humans. Also she was pretending to be a succubus meaning she should try to entice people to have sex with her. Frankly Ruby sucked at being a believable succubus. Sex was avoided at all costs. Her knowledge of succubi behavior was severely lacking and she failed at keeping her own natural non-succubi talents from appearing when in disguise. And she wondered how the angels were onto her.
The angels became less interesting as more was known about them. Their badass personas quickly slipped away. Their behavior with their succubus prisoner was quite disappointing. Her attempts to gather information were far from subtle, but all of the angels easily gave away their secrets. Why would they do that especially when they did not trust her? It made no sense. There wasn’t much depth to them. I was expecting them to be charming, manipulative, and devious. They were easy to read and one dimensional. However the angel Adonis was the only character that made this book worth reading. He oozed charm and sex appeal. I liked him a lot.
I read this book because for a few reasons. One is because I really liked the Dark Fae FBI series by this author. Two is because I love books about the fae. Three is because I had to read this as part of a challenge. To be honest, I might not have finished it if it hadn’t been for the challenge. It was good, but I was bored and slightly irritated with it.

Covert Fae? I mean, "covert", really? Please tell me the title is satire.
This was basically 300 pages of sexually frustrated angels, a protagonist who couldn't stop her ridiculously pretentious declarations to end her enemies, and a laughable attempt at an espionage story, littered with dumb moments and unbelievably thick characters. If you're looking for a plot, good luck. The ending was stupid and underwhelming, but I definitely felt like it would have been different if the first 99% had been developed better.
It sounded so much more elaborate as a blurb.

Excellent!
Basically I love everything CN Crawford writes. I do wish Demons of Fire and Night was finished first, however. I feel like the end of that series is now spoiled in a way. Ruby is awesome. I can't wait to continue her story.

The Great Nightmare: enter our post-apocalyptic world. Dragons have destroyed many a city, burning buildings, killing at random and kidnapping beautiful women. They were closely followed by the Angels of Death, Kratos, Johnny and Adonis, who were sent to earth to purify it, hunting the wicked... or well... everyone out on the streets at night.
Ruby has travelled from New York to London to find her sister. Living in a wrecked hospital with some friends, she scavenges daily for food while trying to stay ahead of starving, falling prey to one of the many gangs on the streets or even worse... the Hunt itself.
Ruby however isn't human, she is fae, with the power to glamour herself into any form she wishes. Having already met Kratos in New York while under the guise of a succubus she realises this is her ticket into his castle while spying for the human rebels. Her mission: finding out what their weaknesses are and to find her sister!
Wearing her succubus glamour 24/7, pretending to be an ancient being with no regard for humans is by no means an easy task when a single mistake would mean the end of her (and possibly the whole world). While Kratos is in lust with her, Johnny has a deep mistrust for the feral fae and Adonis... he is the one she really needs to avoid, eyes that see too much, dark and seductive tendrils of magic... yep, definitely staying away from him.
My take on the book:
It was nice to revisit the same world as in the other books. I've not yet read them all, but it didn't feel like I was missing crucial information. I did find that reading the prequel beforehand was better, giving you a clearer picture of Ruby's persona as Angela Death, how she met Kratos and how the Great Nightmare began, but it is by no means necessary.
The story was well written. The flow was good, though at the start of the book I felt it took a tad too long for Ruby to get off the streets. On the other hand, it did portray the depravity of humans when facing destruction, famine,... and the terror for the Hunt.
The characters were worked out well, Ruby and Kratos being the more fleshed out ones. We're getting more of a feel for Adonis later in the book while Johnny seems a bit absent.
There are a few scenes where characters get touchy, but nothing major and no sex (if that is important for you).
The plot of the story is good with some nice and unexpected twists that keeps you on your toes and not knowing what to think anymore.
This book is a great start to the new series. While the majority of the book feels like the setting of the stage for the rest of the series (so a decent amount of explaining things), you still get the full package with action, intrigue and sexy bad guys.
I'm looking forward to the next book, so many questions...!!!!

Slow start, but still great
The beginning was slow, but it gets better. Ruby the main character get more developed and there's lots of worldbuilding. The most interesting character is Adonis. I wish we could have learned more about him.

Main Players - Ruby, a feral fae disguised as a succubus. The four horsemen of the apocalypse - Adonis/Death, Kratos/Conquest, Aereus/War and Johnny/Famine.
Chapter 1: I’d had this hairpin specially-made, and I could ram the tip of it right into a demon’s heart...
The hairpin struck him exactly where I’d wanted it to...
He plucked the hairpin from the wall, twirled it in his fingers. He shoved it into his pocket...
Chapter 3: What did I have? A damned hairpin. With a lightning-fast movement, I threw the hairpin...
This gave the impression that Ruby had one (1) hairpin specially-made. If that is true she wouldn’t have another to throw at the dragon in Chapter 3 since the demon/not demon had pocketed the one she’d thrown at him.
Ruby, Marcus her vampire boyfriend and her sister Hazel are picnicking in New York when dragons appear after a hiatus of several years. The three fail in their attempt to seek shelter in a nearby building. Marcus is killed and Hazel is snatched by a dragon.
Ruby bamboozles her way to London. She and three other survivors manage to barely eke out an existence. There are enemies aplenty even though the dragons are gone and danger lurks around every corner.
Ruby devises a plan to confront the hunter who roams the street nightly to beseech his help in locating Hazel. She becomes a prisoner in his castle where he lives with two other angels. It turns out the angels pretty much hate each other and she becomes a pawn in their games.
Focusing on the implausibility of this story, how would three angels destroy all of humankind at the rate they’re doing it? Other than Kratos appearing in New York once, they seem to be based in England. Kratos hits the streets nightly with his pack of hellhounds (or whatever they are) but picking off people one at a time doesn’t seem efficient. England is one small country. There’s a big world out there to conquer.
It turns out Ruby is the much feared Bringer of Light who has the ability to destroy the heavenly host (nothing like the ones in Christmas carols) Adonis, the angel of death, recruits her into his plot to end the host so he can take over the celestial realm.

Im eager to see Ruby & Adonis relationship evolve. We just started getting to see them get to know one another. I’m worried about Rubys sister,for some reason I don’t feel like I trust her and she will have to choose between her sister or Adonis at some point but we will see.

It wasn't great.
There's a lot going on but no real clear cut plot, it's more of a series of events that leads to badly made choices which is frustrating. The author butches mythology trying to rewrite it with a different twist which I really wish they hadn't done.
Worst part is it's rather short so the story is rushed and forced and shallow. Character building is dismal, world building was confusing and annoying. Don't rewrite mythology and fantasy creatures unless you have a proper reasoning and backstory. Redcaps are faeries not demon >:(

Odd Concept
I was not able to get into this book at all. I found the lack of introduction to the world in the first chapter made it very difficult to keep up with the how and the why of the world I was entering. The book appeared to be edited appropriately and the author did a fair job with describing objects and events but I wasn’t able to get into it without some sort of backstory.

I hate to see potential go to waste
I get that this wasn't a standalone, but there's a whole lot of nothing happening here. Besides eating and running. Then running and eating. Boring filler, little to no substance. I wish that it would of went more into her relationships with the humans and angels. This chick made a terrible succubus. For all of the action, the story was quite boring.

Been a few weeks since I read it, forgot the important parts so far... ;) Not really, but it was not my cup of tea. The premise itself is something I could have enjoyed, but it just didn't do it for me. I think this mostly stemmed from the succubus part... Wasn't done over the top but... It is rare I actually enjoy anything to do with a succubus... :/

I received a copy of Covert Fae as an ARC, but this review is all my own.
Although this is book 1 in this new series, there is a prequel which I would highly recommend that you read as it just gives that extra bit of info to the events leading up to the start of this book. I loved the prequel, Angela Death, and this book was brilliant as well. Ruby, a fae living in the destruction of London after the Great Nightmare, has lost everything and does what she can to survive. Ruby attracts the attention of one of them and has to try and get on their side in order to find her sister who was taken by dragons on the day the Great Nightmare began two years ago. To fight back against the angels, Ruby has to be prepared to go undercover as a succubus and enter the angels' castle to find out their secrets in order to bring them down. She cannot give up her succubus persona for one moment and she must try to win the trust of the angels, but that is not an easy task by any means.
Will she survive long enough before they find out who she really is? Will her disguise work? Can she tempt the angels into falling?
I really enjoyed this book. The world building at the beginning was heart wrenching really as it truly showed the depravity of the world, but at the same time, the amazing way in which people band together in times of need. Ruby never once forgets her mission in finding her sister and will do whatever she can to get her back.
There were so many times I panicked for Ruby as her true nature and true reason for being at the angels' castle were nearly revealed. The end scene with the most terrifying angel was a fantastic twist that I really wasn't expecting at all.
I am so looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I have so many questions about Hazel, about Adonis and Kratos and their underlying mission and about the Order.

Although this is book 1 in this new series, there is a prequel which I would highly recommend that you read as it just gives that extra bit of info to the events leading up to the start of this book. I loved the prequel, Angela Death, and this book was brilliant as well. This book gives new meaning to the phrase: “Flirting with disaster.” In a post-apocalyptic world where dragons have destroyed cities, the electric grid, and transportation, even supernaturals must scrounge for rats to survive. Ruby (not a good name for a fae) and other Fae are descendants of fallen angels that love tangible things, like glittery clothing and 5-star meals. In the preview, she was an exotic dancer, but now she has lost her boyfriend, her sister, and her lifestyle.
Naturally, Ruby has a hate-on for the dragons and the invading angels. She decides to take it in her hands to infiltrate the angels to spy on them in disguise as a succubus. There are elements of historical mythology here that I have never been introduced to, so boy was I surprised. Ruby is no disney succubus!
However, this leads to a conundrum. Ruby is attracted to the angels as she flirts with them. She needs answers, and the 3 angels at Hotemat (hotel to me) are clever enough to see through her disguise. The scariest angel kills Fae on sight. The dragons are not around, so neither is her sister. Why are the angels and dragons scourging the earth? What are the resistance doing to stop the destruction? What are the different species like?
This story has all my favorite elements:
* Strong romantic angle between enemies that’s integral to the story (it leaves me hot, but there is no kissing, even.)
* Action
* Well-designed characters
* Intriguing plot, and I mean intrigue
* You can guess the motives, but are often surprised with the characters’ allegiences.
I highly recommend reading the prologue first. Otherwise you will find it confusing at times.

This is the first book in a new series titled A Spy Among the Fallen which is also a Demons of Fire and Night novel. I have read books by these authors before, and I was excited to be offered the opportunity to read this new title. TBH, I’m not a big fan of the post-apocalyptic genre, but I do read the ones written by authors whose style I like. And, I’m glad I read this one! I found this to be an original story with some great characters, and I was never sure from one minute to the next what was going to happen; the ending was a huge surprise albeit a little abrupt. Of course, the book was well-written, as was the previous series I read, and there was plenty of action. I wish there was a little bit more information about the supernatural, but that will probably be revealed with each book. I’m always eager to find out more. Speaking of great characters, Adonis was a very intriguing character, along with his “brothers,” and I can’t wait to see where his story will lead. One aspect of the story that did stand out to me was that I wasn’t sure where most of the characters fell in the villain spectrum: good guy or bad buy? Spoiling anything is out of the question, so I’m a little vague. Anyway, I can’t wait to read more to find out where Ruby, her sister, her friends, and the angels are going next. Highly recommend! Ruby is a fae living in the human world with her sister and dating a vampire. She works as a burlesque dancer until one day dragons attack and angels show up. Her work “costume” as a succubus intrigues an angel named Kratos. And the dragons bring about an apocalypse of sorts. Where nightly hunts occur by Kratos’ hounds and nearly everyone is starving to death it seems. During the start of this apocalypse, Ruby’s younger sister Hazel is captured by the dragons and her vampire boyfriend is killed. And then starts her journey to survive and battle the dragons and angels whom she blames for everything.
This story was a bit hard to follow, to be honest. But the intrigue is also very strong, especially with the introduction of Adonis who is also an angel. He apparently is working against the other two known angels (Kratos and Johnny) and randomly helps Ruby along the way. There seems to be a lot of sexual tension with Ruby and the angels, but it’s hard to decipher which is real and which is because she disguises as a succubus. Definitely gonna continue reading and hope more clarity comes to the story line, some real spice occurs and to find out what happens.

I really enjoyed this book. The beginning was a little bit of a slower place but it really set up everything and left you understanding just what was going on.
We have everything in this book. Humans, Fae, Demons and Angels. But not the nice heavenly way that angels are usually depicted. Yes these angels are otherworldly gorgeous as is to be expected but they are scarily powerful. They can kill you by a mere thought or a flick of their wrist.
We have Ruby. A feral fae. She is a survivor. She has lost so much but still continues to fight and is trying to find a way to end the hell that's become her normal day to day.
We meet three particular angels. Those who she believed to have started The Nightmare. But she soon discovers she was wrong about many things when she goes and lives among the ones she wants to stop.
Kratos is her way in. He is infatuated by her succubus glamour. Johnny is the never trusting, always weary angel. And then there is Adonis. The dark and dangerous angel of death.
Who knows what will happen next now she has teamed up with an unlikely partner.

This book was hard to get into at first but I'm so glad I stuck with it
you meet a Fae called ruby who begins her journey as a dancer in New York using a glamour that makes her look, sound and feel like a succubus so she can entice and attract who we find out is kratos at 1st he asks her to come to London with him as she introques him she does go to London to seek him out in hope that he will help find her sister hazel who was kidnapped by the dragons she knows that she has to get to the institute to seek information on her sister but gets injured and Yasmine heals her in return for information that she wants rubies help to source but to achieve this she has to get to the castle and to Adonis and feed the information back to Yasmine which she does but in the process of all this she drops her glamour and Adonis finds out who she truly is but we later find out he knew she was fae all along and was just waiting for her to show her true self she and Adonis become allies and she then becomes known as the light bringer
