This is an excellent book for beginner fly tying, with good photos and a complete supply list for each fly. I went into this book intending to tie at least one usable variant of each fly. I mostly succeeded. Most instructions are easy to understand and follow. But some of the instructions seem to get lost in translation. The author clearly knows what he is saying but I occasionally struggled to keep up. Sometimes the images don’t seem to match what you are asked to do, and there are phrases used that are not otherwise explained. Also, the material colors suggested sometimes don’t match what is in the photo, which can be confusing. Additionally some of the supplies are hard to find, so some creativity is necessary.

Overall this is a great primer on fly tying and something every beginner should have near their bench. In this day and age where there are tutorials on line, a book such as this may not seem necessary. That would be a mistake. There are many different techniques out there for the same type of fly. But having used this book first makes me feel like I have a decent foundation going forward.

This is one book that I will never finish reading. The quality of the instruction and ideas mixed with beautiful pictures allows me to resource this book over and over. This is a first rate book for anyone wanting to learn to tie their own flies!
