A series introducing young children to popular pet animals and explaining how to look after them, from keeping them clean to taking them to the vet. It teaches responsibility, and this title covers how to choose, house, feed, train and play with a dog. Age 6+.
Another simple "pet ed" book for very young readers.
The bad news: While it does mention animal shelters as a place to find a dog who needs a good home, My First Dog makes the too-frequent mistake of asserting, If you want to buy a purebred dog, you will need to go to a breeder. Sigh. No mention of the one in four shelter pets who are purebreds, nor the thousands of breed rescue groups across the US. I'm also not a huge fan of the constant use of "it" to refer to dogs.
The good news: A brief section for parents is included in the back of the book. Neutering is encouraged to prevent the birth of unwanted litters.
