Highland Vengeance

Rate this book
An outlaw. A lass bent on vengeance. Together they are unstoppable.

Maggie Ramsay has never forgotten Randall Baines, the English lord who tormented her beloved sister when they were children. After her sister is injured in a senseless accident, she decides to make Baines pay for what he did…only she gets more than she bargained for. Her brother’s mysterious friend joins her as soon as she leaves her clan alone, insisting on keeping her safe, and when they reach Baines’s castle, she learns the lord is now an earl and his cruelty to women and lassies has only escalated. The discovery fills her with a fire that will not be banked.

Will MacLerie is a notorious outlaw known as the Wild Falconer, hunted for a past he cannot acknowledge for fear of death. His life is devoted to honing his skills as a warrior and anonymously helping those in need, but when he meets Maggie Ramsay, he begins to yearn for something more. A life in which the two of them can travel together freely and fight for the causes they both believe in.

When Will and Maggie discover the depths of Baines’s wickedness, they unite forces to stop the man, come what may. But can they bring down an English earl? Or will they become outlaws for good, forced to live and love in the shadows?

Vega Vampy - per RFS
.

Hands down one the of the best Highlander books that I have read. I have been reading the books about this family from the beginning. I love how Keira has broken down the family into groups, It makes it a little easier to follow the families. Maggie and Will's story was filled so much love and adventure I can't wait hear more about them. I couldn't put the book down. I just had to know what was going to happen. There was lots of mysteries to keep you guessing but also a lot of laughs. It was great catching up with characters from past books, I can't wait to see what's next.

I really love Maggie and Will. I'm also just very partial to the family in this series and having seen Maggie in one of the first books seeing her grow and overcome her tragic start is awesome. Also the premise of this set of books I think is going to be interesting. Especially having read so many in a row of this series, the mystery of trying to stop an illegal human trafficking operation is going to make things interesting. These books are a quick read around 200 pages.

I was excited to begin a new series. However, I felt the entire time like I was just missing something and I was supposed to understand the plethora of characters and many relationships that were not really developed here. I discovered from another review this may have been an offshoot of another family series. Wish I would have known and hence, the multitude of 5 star ratings from others, I'm guessing. They obviously knew something I didn't.

While I enjoyed the heroine and her antics, I did not love the hero because I just couldn't begin to know him. I also thought the reasoning behind her trek to England was very weak and unbelievable. The whole story just fell short for me. I really wanted to love it, but I actually struggled to finish it.

This is a good Highlander romance, and a good start to the Band of Cousins series. It can be read standalone, but will be much better if you read the Clan Grant series and Highland Clan series first. That is because there are many, many characters in this story, most of whom were introduced in one of the other two series.

This one gets 3.5 stars from me, rounded up to 4 stars.

I liked Will, and thought he was good for Maggie. I liked how he realized that helping her was more important than continuing to hide as he had been for some time -- he had to truly love her to make that decision. I also liked how he shared his secret with Maggie, and she helped him see that what he did to avenge his mother didn't make him a terrible person.

I liked Maggie, and understood how her past drove her behavior. What happened to her and her sister as children was sad, and she still dealt with the trauma as an adult. I liked how Will and her family were able to get her to talk about it, and helped her to understand that what happened to her sister was not her fault, and that she had a lot to offer her adopted family. I did think, though, that her recovery from her issues was too quick -- she had spent years believing she was to blame for what happened to her sister, so I think it would have taken a long time for her to get past that.

I was glad that Maggie and Will found their HEA -- they were good together, and they both needed someone who understood them, and would always be in their corner.

I also liked most of the other characters, especially Will's grandfather and the children, who were so cute together. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

I might be missing something as I now read that this is a spin off of another series. Unluckily with Goodreads' new series listing, I don't see this information. All the same, I find Maggie to be very immature. The possibility of her "disappearing" yet Will sees her without issue? and deciding to go to England on her own? The premise of this starts so poorly, why does she do this, the bad explanation, this is the 1280s, really it is too far fetched. So I should just relax and go with the modern independent woman, OK. She needs to be rescued and then she is so whiny and weepy that I now do not know what to think of this supposedly independent woman. I think the reviews are from those who have followed this series from the start and fell in love with the characters who are support characters here and who like this writing. I would not have gotten this far. 42% in and probably should do a DNF but... I just cannot review fairly else.

OK so finished and somewhere between 2 and 3. It is not bad, just not much chemistry, the romance all happens at the end but I didn't feel it. Thought maybe I was not in the mood for romance but I really liked my next book which was romance.

So other than the light chemistry, the plot has the women with way too much choice and gunho killing ability, though it is always to "maim". Great archers. I just didn't believe the character throughout so couldn't like the plot much. It all seemed too far fetched and then the women become whiny one minute and stoic the next. Which is it? Also I didn't think the royalty would get so up in arms in the 13th century over abuse of "indentured" servants, even kids. I really felt we could do this better in some fantasy world rather than 13th century Scotland/England. My update stands, though I'm rounding it down after a day. I may have issues as I haven't read the previous series and have no understanding of the world that she has built, which is my main issue.

Started out strong in my eyes. The story had a good flow to it and some good intrigue. There was not too much unnecessary description and lamentation as it was mostly next scene next scene next scene. The heroine had some intriguing qualities and I was mostly on board with her steadfast determination to prove herself but she had this insecure "am I really deserving to be loved" feature to her that landed her in too many bad situations. As such it required for her to be rescued a lot and made too many people worry about her if she had only trusted the people around her were doing what’s best in her and her sisters interest.

The whole story had a bit of a fairy tale feel to it. I can’t quite put my finder on it, even the name of the series “The Band of Cousins” it felt like a 1990’s high school sitcom with teenagers scheming and land themselves in one trouble after another. Of course there was a strong sense of danger with the threat of these dangerous men not liking these kids meddling in their business, but you know in the end everything will turn out for the better with little to no repercussions. Just the parents in the background wagging their fingers and saying “oh you”

All in all that second part of the story kind of lost me. With the heroine doing bullheaded things and landing herself in one bad situation after another. Not sure If I feel quite the connection with these characters here, they did lack a bit more of a believable realness to the characters. It could do with those undefined but hinted at super powers they have that disappeared as the story progressed. Who knows. All in know there will be no more interest in the series from me from here on.

I got this as a free download on Amazon Kindle so at least I didn't waste my money on the disappointment. It was a little slow to start but seemed like it was picking up and would be ok.... but by the time I got a little over halfway through it, I was so tired of it that I had to MAKE myself finish it -- and only because I absolutely HATE leaving a book unfinished. The plot wasn't really strong enough on its own to last through the whole length of the book, so it felt like the author just started throwing things in there to keep it going, when in reality she could have wrapped the story up about 3 chapters before she actually did. The romance was completely unbelievable in my opinion as far as how the characters acted towards each other once they finally got together -- especially Maggie. I remember getting to the part after they've handfasted and then have to fight off a band of ruffians and she "gasped at the pleasure she felt in his arms" and I thought to myself YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! Yes, their adrenaline would be pumping, and yes, that may cause a person to look at life in a different light and feel grateful for their loved one -- but "gasping at the pleasure" after a near-death experience?! -- give me a break. To have a heroine that you try through the whole book to convey as independent and strong for a woman, the author sure did turn her into a puddle of mush as soon as Will batted an eye or smiled at her. Overall, definitely not my favorite book and I doubt I'll read anything else by this author since this book was worse (in my opinion) than the few other books I've read that she's written.

Another hit series start for Keira Montclair

Looks like Keira has a great new series starting w more if the Ramsay's and Grants in the highlands. Thus time tho it's the youngsters we'll be following since they're bay young anymore. The children of Alex,Quade,Logan etc are starting out on their ventures and finding their lives w plenty of excitement and twists and turns along the way. This one is the start of it all w Logan and Gwenneth's adopted daughter, Maggie trying to correct a past wrong done to her and her sister Molly when they were just bairns. Along the way she meets upnwban intriguing man who does his best to protect her even when she doesn't want it or need it. Soon they find themselves dealing w her hatedbfoe from the past and takes them both to England, the highlands and the court in Edinburgh. Will they succeed on their quest? Donthey get help from some of their amazing relatives or do they need her parents to bail her out of jail . Come along for an interesting and enjoyable ride. Can't wait to read the rest of the books she has planned for this series since it has the same flow of just enough passion , excitement and humour that Keira Montclair has shown in her past Highlander series. I could barely out it down from beginning to end🎉📣BRAVO

Even though this is the beginning of the Band of Cousins series, I could tell this was a continuation of stories already written. You can definitely read this as a standalone, but there are references to things that have happened in past books. I wish I would have read all the books before this one to know all the stories of the people in this book.

This was about Maggie and Will. Will has been on the run for a couple years now after avenging his mother, he is a wanted man.

Maggie is ready to make the man pay for all the pain and damage he caused to her sister (that is a different book, in a different series). Will sees her leave the castle and he follows to make sure she is safe, and they end up teaming up.

Maggie sort of annoyed me, she went out looking for trouble in my opinion. She saved people, yes, but she also brought a lot of trouble to her adopted family's doorstep. She could have at least let them know what she wanted to do. Go as a team.

Anyway, I liked the story, but I didn't love it. I like an equal romance to story ratio. This was mostly story, with a side of romance. It was a good story, I just wish there was more to the relationship between Will and Maggie.

I must preface my review by saying that I had just finished reading the last book in The Highland Clan series and hated for the series to end. I’ve been reading one right after the other (starting with the Grants), loving them all. (Okay, some more than others but still loving them.) I’ve enjoyed going to the author’s Pinterest page to see how she envisioned her characters and I thought I had recalled at the end of one of the books a mention about more stories to come featuring the cousins. As luck would have it, Highland Vengeance had just been released the day before I finished Loki’s Christmas. That truly was like finding one more present under my Christmas tree!

Logan & Gwyneth have been two of my favorites so just as I enjoyed Molly & Tormad’s story, I really enjoyed Maggie & Will. Do I dare say that Logan has softened a bit? After what he put Sorcha & Cailean through! Maggie comes into her own in this story - much like her mother Gwyneth, she is a strong, driven heroine ready to take on her role as protector and pay it forward. I look forward to experiencing more adventures with “The Band of Cousins” (great name by the way) later this year.

I love the start of the series The Band of cousins.
For me the best part is that Maggie is Logan Ramsay's daughter. Anything with Logan Ramsay and Gwenyth... I'm all in. Logan is older but he still has that wicked sense of humor and his fierceness is ever present. So it just adds another dimension to the story that is already taking off fantastically.

Here we have Maggie who's bound and determined to protect her older sister Molly and in order to protect her she needs to get rid of someone who has caused them pain in their past when they were children.

Will is the man they call the Wild Falconer. He remains in hiding until someone needs him. And in this case he sees the lass of Logan Ramsay who needs to think before she acts. She literally pins him down. She has the strength and the evil doing of how her mother Gwyneth fights. She's learned from the best, from her mother and her father. Will can't help but be attracted to the young lady who fires up his blood but he too has some issues. He has a past that he must hide from. He truly is tired of hiding and running.

Highland Vengeance by Keira Montclair
The Band of Cousins Series Book One
Maggie Ramsay has always been protected by her older sister, Molly. Now, Molly is hurt and she is struggling with someone from the past while she sleeps. Maggie heads out alone to go and put an end to the past and be the protector of Molly for once.

William “Will” MacLerie has been in hiding for two years. He's befriended a couple of the Ramsay boys and he has his grandsire. When he sees Maggie heading out alone at night, he does the only thing he can. He follows her and protects her.

I really enjoyed this story. It's a new series that will include the younger cousins of the Ramsay/Grant clans. And now the Band of Cousins is on a mission. I cannot wait to read each of their stories as they ride out to right a wrong.

Highland Vengeance

As expected another winning novel from Keira Montclair. The story of Maggie and Will is a love story you won't forget for a while. Ms. Montclair is one of the favorites on my list of favorites. She never fails to give us page turner.
Maggie is a good match for Will and they fall in love as soon as they met but neither really wanted to be married, at least not so soon. Will is wanted for murder and stays hidden until he is needed. Maggie is the adopted daughter who has been trained in protecting herself. She is superb with the bow and throwing knives. She considers herself as unattractive and stays out of sight most of the time to avoid any suiters so she will not have to marry. The story goes on to end in the marriage of them. Get ready for a "cannot put down" book. Happy Reading.

I received this book as an ARC and was again very happy to read and review. Ms Montclair has once again written a book to keep the reader very happy. This book is the first in her new series and she has developed the characters so that the reader feels you know them well. It can be read as a stand alone book but if you have read many of her other books you will recognize many well loved characters. In this book there is adventure, mystery , suspense and of course romance. She has used this book to introduce the next generation while bringing in the old to keep you feeling like you are reading about old friends. Once again well worth the read and I will be looking forward to reading the entire series.

Thrilling Adventure With Lots Of Danger and Rescues:
Intriguing beginning to a new series. Starts off with suspense and a knife at our hero's throat. What a way to meet the inevitable love of your life. From there they take us on quite an adventure of vengeance and doing away with a horrible villain in the end.
Both are passionate characters that each have their flaws or burdens to conquer. A rocky road ahead filled with understanding, romantic attraction, frenzy intimacy after marriage, escapes, kings, and much more.
I look forward to reading more of this exciting and difficult mission the king has set up for them.
It should be quite thrilling to follow the H and h along with their Band Of Cousins.

Wonderful

Excellent new series by one of my favorite authors! When Keira Montclair announced she was starting a new series, my heart broke! I love the Grant/Ramsey families and I was sad that their story had ended! To my delight, the new series is about the younger members of the clan and0 their adventures. Such wild Scottish times! I loved reading about every minute of it and especially the strong girls who fight as well as the boys for goodness and the right! And they fall in love with the most wonderful gentlemen! Wonderful story and I'm looking forward to the rest of this new series! Excellent read!

Another. Visit with much loved Clan, Family, and Friends.

Another 5 star book visiting my favorite people in Clan Grant/Ramsay, family, friends, and now Band Of Cousins. What a joy to dig into another awesome story with favorite people. It is full of adventure, intrigue, love, loyalty, sweet old and new romances, especially tender new relationship. Fabulous strong, protective H and h. Women as good, or better with weapons, than men, even more feared. Couldn’t put it down, had to see what next. Highly recommend, can’t wait for next book. Standalone, but best read in order. They have a little sweet sizzle done in such good taste and adds to story.

Highland Vengeance

This was a great read. It’s the story of Maggie’s constant struggle to put behind her how her parents gave her and her sister up when very young thinking they just weren’t loved or wanted. She sets out to extract vengeance on her own when her sister is accidentally shot and careens down a ravine. She is followed by a friend of her cousins who is in hiding himself for killing a man who burned his mother alive claiming her to be a witch. The story is about them working together to make things right and with the help of all her cousins now known as the band of cousins

You know how when you are so into a book you say "you can't put it down"? I had the opposite problem here, I struggled so hard to pick this book up to read. It's relatively short, yet reading this was such a slog it took me over a week. The storyline was way too modern, with the heroine always running off into danger directly defying the orders of her father and laird. The villain was textbook bad guy with no depth to him and everything wrapped up super trite and stupid. The only reason this book isn't dnf is because I got trapped in a medical waiting room with nothing else to read and my phone at 17% battery.

Loved the story of Maggie and Will. When Maggie’s older sister Molly is hurt, she realizes she needs to act revenge against the Randall Baines from her childhood! She meets up with the Wild Falconer (Will) and they set off. What the come upon is a young lass being whipped in the square. Maggie remembering her childhood she acts in haste and saves the child. She is later accused of killing 3 of the Earls people and arrested. Will along with her family need to uncover the truth. Another awesome story of the Ramseys and Grants!

Highland Vengeance

The book was an okay read. I got really irritated at Maggie going off half cocked to get vengeance against an earl without a plan, twice. She's supposed to be 27, that's old for that time period and should have more maturity. She's also supposed to be a seasoned warrior of her fathers and should have more discipline. As far as Will goes, I felt his personality should have been more forceful. This is the first book I've read of this author. I probably won't read another, but if you like simple and sweet characters, this might be the book for you.

The first in a new series is best when read after the Highland Clan and Clan Grant series. There are many characters from the other series in this series.
Maggie is sworn to revenge against the English lord that mistreated her sister and herself when he got them from their parents as small children.
Will is an outlaw that killed the man that burned his mother as a witch.
Together they join to end the evil lord, but they fall for each other.
Suspense, tension and adventure makes this a great read.. not to mention love.....

Keira Montclair has done it yet again! This is the first book in her new series about the younger Ramsays and Grants, and it's amazing! The story is captivating with nonstop adventure. I loved how Keira was able to seamlessly continue the story of everyone's 2 favorite clans. Without giving anything away, I'll just say that it was great seeing the group of cousins follow in the footsteps of their parents. I'm excited for the rest of this series!

In a world where doing what you're told, what you've promised, and what won't cause hardship for your clan is paramount, this kind of story pisses me off. In the attampt to make an abnormally (for the era) strong female character, what we actually get is a willful brat who continually disobeys so her whole fucking family has to disrupt everything to go chase her down. Repeatedly. The whole premise is ridiculous and annoying.

Highland Vengeance

Maggie was upset that she couldn’t help her sister Molly from getting hurt after Molly gave so much to Maggie. Maggie decided to make things even she would go after Earl of Wingate Randall Baines. He was the one that used to beat Molly when they were young. Maggie teamed up with Will with his falcons. Saving some very young girls that Randall was trying to sell. After the kings of Scotland and England found Randall guilty.

4.5 Great Story to begin the Band of Cousins series. I liked Will. I was surprised that Gwyneth and Logan's daughter would impulsively. Maggie was well trained by her adoptive parents. She felt guilty for all the times her sister Molly took her punishment before they were rescued by Gwyn and Logan. Will was a protector. He sees Maggie set out on her own without family or guards, he quickly follow to watch out for her. I enjoyed the book.

Love it!

I love this book! Love it when you put little ones in it. And all the banter. With some seriousness too! And and and. LOL my favorite part was when Maggie took Baines down and punch him. I did laugh out loud with that one. But if you charge 4-5 dollars then I won't be able to read the others.
