A spaceship captain's needs are simple: Pilot a ship, hang with your crew, and drink a lot of coffee. Oh, and avoid people trying to kill you. When she and her crew land on a mining station to meet an arms dealer with information about her warmongering brother, that last one is out the window. Three out of four isn't too bad for Kylie Rhoads. Turns out, a lot of people want her dead and off the station, but she won't leave without finding out who put her would-be-assassin up to the task. One thing leads to another, and before long Kylie unearths a conspiracy she can't ignore. Now she'll not only fight for the lives of her crew but for everyone on the mining station because sometimes saving lives is more important than taking them. **
Kylie has a lot on her mind, but it doesn't stop her from being an ultra badass
The more I read the Kylie Rhoads spin-offs, the more I love them. The story and writing style seem to get better in each successive book. In this one, the team is side tracked following a lead in their main quest, and end up not being able to help themselves from helping out the people they meet. M.D. Cooper does a great job n this book exploring the conflict experienced by Kylie that she has inside her from the events of the last book. But being complex neither stops her from being effective nor awesome.
I chose a five-star rating because the characters in this series continue to develop as the events they experience shape and affect them. By this point, I can't help but care and love each of them, and more backstory unveiled in several of the more mysterious characters helped me form a stronger connection to Winter and Bubbs. Her talking space-cat is hilarious AF, (ASSHOLE). The author's tendency of having strong female characters continues throughout these books, and in all of his series, in a way that is not-at-all disparaging to the men in the stories. The future Cooper imagines is truly egalitarian, rather than feministic, and Kylie, just like Tanis, Rika, and Jessica, is a serious badass that i can't get enough of.
With some authors, spreading themselves out with this many associated paths following the major characters of their series is a step towards disaster. With M. D. Cooper and the talented authors who are working with him, we have one of the richest series I have seen in decades! This series stacks up with the best of David Weber and Anne McCaffrey, to name only two.
Kylie Rhoads has had a tough life and the road since being forced to kill her father hasn't gotten smoother. Captain Rhoads and her crew do their thing and win the day against long odds (happens to them a lot).
Well worth the time to start at the beginning of this sub-series and read them all. You're going to find them as enjoyable as I did!
Another good story, following in the aftermath of Collision Course. The crew have a new mission, but things are never as simple as they would like, as they find more of the mess that Peter Rhoads and co have left behind. Shows well just how bad the situation is getting for parts of the galaxy, as the overall situation escalates, but also shows well that you don't need armies to turn it around, when you have strong, dedicated characters willing to give their all (though on flipside, we also see the same is true for the antagonists). Another good story overall, and I look forward to where things go next.
For fans of Kylie Rhodes - this is right up your alley, continuing on with more of the crazy gang's adventures. If you don't know Kylie and her crew, well you might be better off going back to the start so you don't miss some of the more important plot lines. These guys are junkers turned good guys, hunting down terrorists on behalf of Tanis and the Trancend. They don't know how to stay out of trouble of the life-threatening kind, and meet some pretty whacky characters along the way too. Entertaining times in the Aeon 14 universe!
I have read four of the books in this sub-set of the Orion Wars novels. I must say that Mr Cooper's books are like a potato chip. You can't eat, or in this case, read just one. I am concerned that I don't have the money to read all of the books in his universe. I would encourage prospective readers to read the books of each series sequentially. The experience is much more rewarding because the characters are enriched with each episode of the continuing saga. I am looking forward to the next books. What can I say? I'm hooked.
The first three books in this series weren't really to my taste - too many battles, intrigue, betrayals, torture, loss. But the end made my tears well up, and I hoped for a better day. We met some new characters, and some old friends showed up.
This book was a slower, less intense story, focusing more on Kylie and her crew, and their mission to find her brother, Paul. Of course, there are still battles and betrayals, and even a plague to deal with. But there are crew dinners, some romance, some backstories of the crew - and even a pet added to the mix!
Yet another great read from these two fantastic authors. Kylie has set out in the task of finding her lost brother, but she unearths a conspiracy she can't ignore, a small mining station where she had hoped to find information on her brother turns out to be anything is simple. She'll not only fight for the lives of her crew but for everyone on the mining station.
Yet again a book I couldn’t put down. The Kylie Rhoads story is more unique than most in the aeon 14 series. I appreciate the character development especially of winter in this book.
Now the ending caught me off guard. Happily of course. Lol. I love the insight we got into Winter. You connect to him a little better. Now Babbs you fall in love with. Brings a little of Rika into it.
Another good read that you need to read. Kylie is up to her new but old tricks and find out more about each of the characters you have got to know and new characters that are coming in. I suggest you read and enjoy
Kylie and crew are looking for her brother. They have followed him to the Hanoi System. They land on one of the asteroids and all hell breaks loose. Read to see what happens.
DNF. This is just written badly. Based on reading the middle chapters. Random scene transitions. Frequent missing of details about the world. To many characters interact at once. No idea what the motivations of the MCs are.
Another great part of the Aeon 14 series. If you're reading the series, this is another have to read. I'm continually awed by the authors imagination and attention to detail. Fantastic series.
Great plot and wonderful characters. Kylie is searching for her misguided brother when she and her crew get caught up in a mini-war on a mining asteroid. But even a mini-war can be deadly!
