Prehistoric creature in a lake killing people and generally being a massive dick about everything? Why yes please!

As you know, if you've been reading my reviews, I absolutely love creature features, massive fish, evil cows, frolicking spiders, all of 'em. So I'm constantly on the lookout for them, like b-movies they're feel good stories for me, I wrap myself up in a blanket, make myself as comfortable as possible and dive right in. So good.

I loved this book, the drama and quirkyness of the characters, the massive fish being troublesome, the storyline, the escapades and the shenanigans. It was just right for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

As soon as I finished this I picked up Thresher by the same author will be keeping my eye out for Behemoth. I just love these sorts of books.

*Huge thanks to Michael Cole, BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for this copy which I chose to read and all opinions are my own*

Not just any creature, a prehistoric one. A much larger and much more dangerous ancestor of a modern day plain looking seafood. This book was meant to be a sort of palate cleanser, but as such it worked kinda like Fritos. About as refreshing and nutritious. This metaphor probably doesn’t work for Fritos fans, so just substitute that with any disgusting snack of your choice. I mean, you can’t expect a literary masterpiece from a book like that and I didn’t, but I might have overestimated my tolerance for schlock or maybe misjudged my mood. And I used to read this sort of thing all the time…mind boggling. And wouldn’t it be fun if giant prehistoric creatures really lurked in some random bodies of water? Here’s looking at you, Nessie. Anyway, if you are in a mood for some cheap thrills in and near the water, this is decent enough for what it is, a book equivalent of a B movie. Quick and mindless (very mindless) read. Thanks Netgalley.

Wow! What have I just read? Seriously. Where do I even start? Ah, right. I’ve got this book from Netgalley, as a free book. So yeah, it’s not a very good book. Story is really crappy, like from those class B (or C) SciFi channel movies. It’s like “Lake Placid”, only worse and with a mega fish instead of crocodile. Another thing is editing. Was this book even edited before being published? Stuff like “recently added addition” or “pain in his leg didn’t hurt so much” are really weird. Not to mention spelling mistakes, lack of space between words and one occurrence of “you’re” instead of “your”! The book is uneven - part of the writing is better than the rest. Characters are quite one dimensional and boring. They are super cliche, too. Oh and the author has a tendency to repeat words - looks like he discovers new word and uses it all the time, like “chumming”. If the editing was better, the story would feel better, I think.

P.S. I gave it two stars, but it’s bit too much. More like 1,5 would be more fair.

Review: CREATURE FROM THE CREVASSE

A rip-roaring roller coaster horror thriller, CREATURE FROM THE CREVASSE will also wring your heart and water your tear ducts, leaving you wondering how humans can be so blinded by greed and perceived fact. A peaceful lake community in Michigan, a new chief of police, a new hospital doctor...and a terrifyingly vicious new predator, unstoppable and implacable. Humanity fancies itself the apex of the food chain and the species in control of the planet. Sometimes Nature likes to ironically prove us wrong.

Something that "could not" exists is now hunting prey in Ridgeway Lake, and due to its enormity, it gets hungry very fast. Fish won't keep this predator satisfied.

I went into this with very low expectations because I saw so many negative reviews about it, but I ended up thoroughly enjoying it!! It was an easy, mindless and entertaining read.

Morgan Sydney took the Chief of Police in the small town when he had had enough of being a police man in a big city, and after getting a serious gun shot wound. He thinks the job will be easy, and it usually is, but when people start disappearing near the lake, and accounts of a "big fish", he realises that there is a creature intent on killing anyone or anything that's in it's territory.

The plot of this was relatively fast paced and quite entertaining. I love a good creature feature and also love a good b movie horror and this ticked both the boxes. The parts with the fish were well written and exciting, and I loved that we get to know more about the characters during the rest of the book. It made them easy to like and connect with.

In all, this was a fun read. It held my attention till the end and made me want to check out more from this author. Yes, it mightn't be a masterpiece, but it's an enjoyable read non the less!

A story about a giant "Carnobass." What more needs to be said?

Giant fish eating patrons of an American resort town? Check. A local police chief who needs to stop the menace to his town to get folks back to the beach? Check. A wacky scientist who is just the right fish expert who teams up with said police chief? Check. A stubborn mayor who clashes with the police chief for fear of political and economic consequences? Check. All the elements of a Jaws homage are here for a delightful summer read for you lovers of creature features. This time, it's a giant large-mouth bass of all things.

The story gets knocked down a star for unnecessary verbosity. Sure, it is brief in length as it is, but the author pads out too many scenes that could easily be summed up in a paragraph or a few sentences of dialogue. Hence, you have whole stretches of mundane childish redneck banter. Or detailed fishing lessons (down to inserting the hook into your nightcrawler three times so the bait doesn't fly off when you cast.) Or descriptions of how stupid the sheriff is for the umpteenth time. Or reminders of the nagging pain in the police chief's leg for the kazillionith time. If an author can't think of an interesting subplot or theme to expound upon, then the author should limit their primarily action-driven narrative to novellette or short story length. I found myself reading just the quotations of character dialogue rather than the rambling text in between, as it had so little consequence to the story. For me, that is a sin when it comes to the art form.

Not so critical but somewhat off-putting was the very low-brow humor. "Awright, let's kick some BASS!" It wasn't funny the first time, and it got worse when repeated ten more times like my six-year-old son repeats fart jokes. The icthyian menace is referred to by the omniscient narrator as the idiotically-named "Carnobass" early on in the book during one of its attacks, which took away from an otherwise effectively horrific moment.

But as fan-service to those folks who enjoy horror stories featuring monsters from the deep and other such scifi mayhem, this book is comfort food. It feels like it was ripped from the pages of classic 70s and 80s paperback fiction and conjures fitting images of B-movie legends from the same era like "The Crater Lake Monster."

The characters are all likeable and well-fleshed out. I particularly liked the loud-mouthed Middle-Eastern spitfire doctor who was the ex-wife of the police chief and thus becomes the romantic interest. Other than annoying me with her endless repertoire of talents (not only is she a physician, she is a coroner and helicopter pilot when the narrative needs her to be), she is a joy when she is on the scene.

The kills are suitably gruesome but nothing about the book feels nihilistic or overly dark. The whole thing is done as a kitschy love-story to the films and books that the author enjoyed growing up, and also displays a charming lack of self-awareness and maturity.

Though I only rate this three stars, it will have a solid appeal to readers like me who enjoy this kind of romp in the genre of man-eating beast adventure.

Michael Cole is always worth picking up! even though this book ended up being a DNF dud.

I am not entirely sure why Coles books are so hit and miss, but when they are good, they are great, and when they are bad, they are atrocious...

I didn't like our characters. I wasn't gripped by the plot. Everything was revealed too fast. There were a lot of editing problems, grammar that was off (which is the worst), miss spelled words, repetitive words, sayings, and sentances.... not to mention that the monster was uninspiring. Giant prehistoric fish? Shredders (which I can't remember if they were prehistoric or genetically altered pirhana), but THAT book is everything this book didn't manage to be..

Put this away about 1/3 of the way in. But again. Always give Michael Cole a shot. There are gems in the rough!!!!!

Bob Ferguson, college dean, is out fishing on the lake. He is the only one there on this early morning. He gets a quick bite and is excited. A nice bass. Casting his line once more, little did he know it would be his last cast.

Police Chief Morgan Sydney was let go for medical reasons from the Michigan State Police. He was shot in the leg and badly wounded while apprehending a suspect. He searched all over for another position, and all he could get was the police chief job at a small resort community. An officer of six months is Officer Tim Marlow who aspires to become a police chief somewhere. He realizes that he must get more training and in different areas to rise up the ladder. Chief Sydney grudging begins to like him and agrees if he does eighteen more months on patrol, he’ll recommend him for more training.

The local sheriff’s department has somewhat strained relations with Sydney’s new police department. The police department is a new organization, having been created when response time from the sheriff’s office were too long. The sheriff’s department resents this.

The new doctor at the small medical center is Sydney’s ex-wife. Oh, this opens up a whole area of conflict for him.

When Sydney finally realizes what he’s got on his hands in the lake, he is almost at a loss. He knows he needs help – and lots of it. He joins up with the sheriff, other local people and an oddball biologist who believes he has the answer.

Yes, this story is reminiscent of Jaws. The characters are clichéd and predictable. Okay, you have five people missing by 23% of the book and none of them have been reported? The ex-husband and ex-wife thing was trite. The writing was sophomoric. But I don’t believe this book was supposed to be the height of literature. It was supposed to be a fun read and creature feature. That it was. It was just okay. I am almost embarrassed to add that this is perhaps the most un-inspiring novel I’ve read from BooksGoSocial.

I want to thank NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for forwarding to me a copy of this book to read.

Overview: The city of Rodney is home to a large lake and a water sports lodge. Unfortunately for the fishermen and boaters, it's also home to a very large problem. Something in the lake seems to be attacking boaters and swimmers alike. Can Chief Sydney, Sherrif Logan, a crazed biologist, and the newest doctor in town figure out what is going on? Or will Ridgeway Lake be the death of the town? Let's find out.

Dislikes: This will be two items. First, we get Mayor Greene. This man made his political life playing Chief Sydney and Sherrif Logan against each other, leaving him to be the only one who benefited from the exchange.

The second one is this is a book from a small publisher. There were a few typos that got through the printing process. That might bother some people, but you must remember that the larger publishers have typos that will slip through. At least this one didn't have any extra copies of pages included.

Likes: Chief Morgan Sydney wasn't against working with nearly anyone. Though working with Meya and Sherrif Logan was something that he had to overcome some of the animosity, that they held for each other, first.

Wilkow might have been a nut, but he was rather enthusiastic about his theory, and making the catch of a lifetime.

Joel is the craziest guy that I've met in these books. But that makes him fun to follow.

The creature in this book was something you don't run across very often.

Conclusion: This was a fun story. Let's face it, you don't read a creature feature book for high-brow literature. This is brain candy. If you like creature features, then this book is for you Enjoy the read.

Ok, so, yes, this book needs some editing - a lot of editing!. Having said that, I quite enjoyed this book. I won't go into great detail on the storyline as the synopsis will do that for you, but basically, this story follows a similar premise to Jaws, that great 'big fish' book and movie (that really should have stopped after the original, but that's for another day).

I really enjoyed following the story of the main characters, including Morgan Sydney, the local town police chief who took a posting to the small village where the story takes place after suffering a serious gunshot injury in the line of duty. Of course, he encounters his ex-wife, who is now the town's main GP/ER doctor/surgeon/hospital admin, etc. Add to them a host of seemingly inept sheriff's, a selfish mayor, an eccentric, half-mad scientist and dumb-as-f* redneck residents, and you have quite a fun read, which runs along a a good clip.

Unfortunately, due to the poor editing I could only give this book a 3 star rating, but it would have achieved at least a 4 star if that is cleaned up.

This one starts off with a bang with plenty of action right from the first chapter, which immediately had me hooked. It doesn't waste time getting to the good stuff, and that momentum keeps going throughout most of the book.

Sidney Morgan, the main character, was surprisingly relatable. He’s not your typical over-the-top action hero, and that made following his journey a lot more engaging. You actually care what happens to him, which isn’t always the case in books like this.

The pacing was solid - quick without feeling rushed. The story just keeps ticking along, and I never found myself wanting to skip ahead or zone out. It hits that sweet spot between fast-moving plot and enough detail to stay grounded.

Now, is it the next great literary classic? No. But that’s not the point. It’s here to entertain, and it absolutely delivers. In fact, it felt like something a bit different - like Michael Cole tried something different, and it worked. I really enjoyed it for what it was: a fun, fast-paced creature feature that knows exactly what kind of story it wants to tell.

So you Enjoy Bass Fishing

I wasn't sure what to expect except to probably be disappointed. Boy was I WRONG! This book was a fantastic Creature Feature. It was action-packed, suspenseful, with cringe-worthy moments. The author created a monster with an original if not quite believable was plausible. A lake resort full of swimmers, jet skiers, paddle boarders, and dedicated fishers. An adversarial relationship between the local and county Law Enforcement added extra drama. Along with conflict between a crippled police chief and the tough new doctor in town.

There were likeable characters and outlandish ones. This isn't meant to be a serious work of fiction, but it certainly is a very entertaining one. I plan to read more by Michael Cole and hopefully I'll also be able to find some similar authors writing in the same vein. Fun, scary, shocking, and even at times poignant. I'm going to start another Michael Cole book, Creature of Lake Snow before I head to bed tonight.

The premise of this book was great, but the dialogue between some of the characters was terrible. Particularly for the women. The dialogue between the men and women in this story was flat, contrived and strange. All the women’s roles are in service to a man and feel sexist . The second chance, romance between Sidney and Maya should’ve been left out. I didn’t care about them . They had no chemistry. Wilco’s character had potential being the professor that was going to save today with science, but character was weird, annoying and corny. He never felt like a real person much less of professor. Instead of being a little eccentric he was a caricature. Some of the dialogue felt like the author was trying to use slang, but had no idea how to use it.. if you don’t speak like that, then research and find someone who does to help or leave it out. Overall and okay horror story about a prehistoric killer fish.

This is the second time I read this book.

Since the 2nd book came out, I wanted to reread it so I would have the memory fresh on my mind.
Still loved it!! A FUN read, a heck of a ride!! I read it again I. One sitting, (OK, I have no life!) but this is a fun, B movie type of monster romp!! Won't win a Pulitzer prize, but I loved every single moment of it!! And now I am starting the second book. Right now. But I wanted to tell you all..
READ THIS BOOK (SERIES) I'd you love monster fish stories, heroic men, love stories and KICK ASS WOMEN who can do it ALL!!!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

not the worst creature feature, not the best creature feature. predictable, standard action movie characters with their witty quips and one-liners. no complaints about the writing; it scratches the itch.

the narrator was below average, though. you could tell he was in his house bc he whispered all the yelling like he was afraid to disturb anyone with loud noises xD. overall he didna good job, especially the female characters, surprisingly. biggest pet peeve is the fact that he literally mispronounces the title of the story. Instead of "crevasse" he says "crevice" which I guess are more or less synonyms but it hits the ear wrong.

Solid 5/10

Exciting scenes, poorly written

The scenes of the fish attacking were very descriptive; it put one right in the action. The writing, however, was juvenile and somewhat unbelievable. Police deputies and sheriff's deputies laughing and making fun while hunting a killer fish that has killed dozens of people? Actively showing no respect for the Chief? Complaining that they had to work longer than their shift? And I don't know if it's the Kindle version or the author, but there are massive grammar and vocabulary errors in this book, enough to make it difficult to concentrate.

Review of this book.

This was a real cliff hanger. There was excitement and drama from the first page to the last sentence of this book. The momentum never let up. This was definitely a edge of your seat thriller. I could barely read fast enough to find out what happened next. The author just keeps getting better and better. I plan to start reading the next book in this series as soon as I finish this review. I started this book yesterday and just had to finish it, so I could find out what happens next. Fantastic, thrilling book. I want more of the same thing in the next book!

Let’s Go Fishing

Creature from the Crevasse by Michael Cole is a great creature feature story. The plot flowed really well as did its characters. I found the overall story exciting from beginning to end. Joel was my personal favorite character in this one. The creature of this one I found quite interesting. The Carno Bass was just as deadly as any shark. The narrator Nathan Westhoff did a phenomenal job bringing this story to life. All in all I would recommend Creature from the Crevasse to anyone and everyone who loves a non stop creature feature thrill ride.

Another reason to stay out of the water

This is a great story about a 20+ prehistoric fish that is very hungry. Needless to say, people who spend time in the water become a favorite food of this fish. The author does a good job of explaining everything including the main characters back stories. This book would make a good movie. I really would love to read more of this author's books.

Meh

This book was not great. Bad grammar is used a lot. Other reviews talk about this being reminiscent like jaws. It is. It also has elements of Lake Placid where they dangle bait for the croc by helicopter. The scientist, while smart, is also a glorified idiot, yelling things like “ I’m going to get some bass” . I couldn’t even like the main character, the sherif or his ex wife. He is a jerk and she can do it all, including fly helicopters. Lucky.

This was a decent book. Although it was predictable and the creature in question wasn't particularly frightening I was entertained enough to finish it in one sitting while on a flight. My real issue with the ebook version at least was the amount of grammatical and spelling errors. I'm no English professor but the errors were abundant, easily the most I've ever seen in one book.

I really enjoyed reading this story. The action was fast paced, the death toll was believable and I liked the characters. Was quite miffed when one of my favorites met an untimely demise. I know they have sub-characters just to kill them off but I don't have to like it.

Well written and just a fun creature feature.

Maybe the the creature didn't excite me or maybe just too much human and cliche drama, but I found this book to be below average from this writer.

That being said it does get points for originality of the creature and minor characters.

And the death scenes makes it just go up above the 3 star mark but just barely.

Carnobass

While I certainly don't condone the stealing of credit cards from professor's office, the fact that his idiocy helped to save the day was quite profound. I'm also glad that the sheriff and his ex-wife were able to finally bury the hatchet and maybe come to some degree of love again.
