疲れたぁー It’s a nice book in its own right, but it’s just absolutely not to my taste. I honestly don’t like the dynamics between the two MCs. It’s the BL version of the conventional patriarchal order where the calm and composed mature « man » teaches the adorable and childish « woman » how to behave, and occasionally spoils the « woman » rotten. Don’t get me wrong, I can totally enjoy gay romance with a traditional gendered approach, as long as the plotline is solid and the characters interesting. Unfortunately I don’t find any of those qualities in this book. The bottom is a massive manchild and absolutely overbearing, I feel tired and feel secondhand embarrassment at every of his actions. The top is just a very stereotypical デキる男, falling for the bottom because he finds the bottom’s childish and dumb as shit behaviors amusing, innocent anf refreshing. It’s such a 上から目線 which is a bit of an ick for me, and I don’t find the idea of « educating » your lover appealing, regardless of whether it’s coming from the « masculine » role or the « feminine role ».
But this book also showcases Kawai’s strong points very well, particularly her investment in the upperclass world, her appreciation of the lifestyle, the social norms and cues and whatnot. If you want to indulge in the bougie old money idea a little bit, this book ain’t bad. くどくない, not too pretentious, and effectively sells you the dream of affluent life.
