The critically acclaimed hit series FEAR AGENT returns to Image Comics! The homecoming begins with a new series of master edition trades, each collecting 10 issues of RICK REMENDER, TONY MOORE, and JEROME OPEÑA’s seminal pulp sci-fi classic! Veteran fans and new recruits alike can experience the whiskey-soaked, laser-scorched life of Heath Huston, the galaxy’s last Fear Agent, like never before. Loaded with never-before-seen scripts, variant covers, designs, and concept art.
When down-and-out alien exterminator Heath Huston stumbles upon an extraterrestrial plot to commit genocide against the human species, he must put down the bottle and resume his role as a peacekeeper...the last Fear Agent!
Rick Remender is an American comic book writer and artist who resides in Los Angeles, California. He is the writer/co-creator of many independent comic books like Black Science, Deadly Class, LOW, Fear Agent and Seven to Eternity. Previously, he wrote The Punisher, Uncanny X-Force, Captain America and Uncanny Avengers for Marvel Comics.
Fear Agent is about this cowboy space dude who's carrying around a lot of emotional baggage. Like cowboy space dudes do.
He's also a hard-drinking member of the now obliterated, government tough guy unit called the Fear Agents. Something mysterious and bad happened to him and he spends issue after issue fighting for his survival on inhospitable planets against alien enemies.
There are a couple of twists revealed and it ends on a cliffhanger.
I wasn't overly excited by this one but I'll probably keep going with it anyway.
Fear Agent : Final Edition Vol. 1 is the first omnibus of the Image comics series created by author Rick Remender (Deadly Class), Tony Moore (co-creator of The Walking Dead) and Jerome Opeña.
It includes the first two story arcs : Reignition part 1 to 4, and My War part 1 to 6, before leaving us on a nice twist and cliffhanger
Heath Huston is an alien exterminator, the last of the legendary fear agents team. He left Earth after having lost his family to alien invasion. Always drunk, constantly narrating the story through his thoughts, with nothing to lose, he delivers a good dose of raging dark humor characteristic of Remender’s works.
The first issues give a feeling of going the way of diverse unconnected adventures but, quickly, the characters enter a race to save earth from total annihilation by parasitic infestation. However, an unfortunate sabotage gets in the way of their self attributed mission.
This book is strongly remindful of the sci-fi pulp stories of old. It has everything : strange planets, wacky aliens, Dalek-like killer robots, improbable tech gizmos, time travel shenanigans...
Tony Moore’s designs and art are fantastic, and his use of panel layout in action sequences add to the franticnesss of it all. The backgrounds are detailed, and the colorist is at the top of his art. The lettering adequately helps differentiating the dialogue from each alien race.
The book is, in great part, fast paced, fun, non stop action. Highly recommended.
As a bonus, the omnibus offers clean covert art for each issue, and sketchbook in the backpages.

In retrospect, a lot of this reads like a dry run for Black Science. You've got the same mix of alien races at war, humanity under siege, and a conflicted main character trying to do his best to fix things and keep despair at bay. These early issues aren't really a good indicator of where things would eventually go, reading more like a rip-snorting, pulp sci-fi adventure. Still, they're fun, and coupled with the outstanding artwork of collaborators Tony Moore and Jerome Opena, set the stage for what would become one of Remender's early near-masterpieces.
Remender je u me porad hit or miss.
Pretty good. Exactly what we’ve all come to expect from rick remender. If you like black science or low or even Tokyo ghost then you will like this. It’s not for everybody but if you like his kind of writing, nobody does it better.
People like this crap? Okay - put aside my intense irritation for someone recommending this series as "the best" and wasting my time, I will focus on why I didn't like it - at all. Not one bit. Tonal: It is all over the place. We start off with a comedy of errors from drunken spaceman for hire Heath Huston on a mission to help a world and leaves it behind worse than when he got there. Okay - so this is going to be a funny idiot hero always making a mess. By the end it is apocalyptic and an exercise in "how depressing can we make this plot"? Is it a comedy or a straight out horror? Neither are done well. Art: We change artists mid stream and a guy I loved in X-Factor Jerome Opēna does a cartoon version which starts off more serious but gets more MAD magazine by the end. Even art wise the tone is all over the place. Characters: Should I root for Heath? Is he competent? Is he an idiot? By the end, he was just loathsome. We even have one issue where he takes drugs and tries to suicide by overdose. Again - is this funny to the author? a tragedy? The last issue he sees Earth's population decimated but Heath still has time to poke fun at his ex-wife's new boyfriend? Should we just laugh at Earth's destruction as a punchline? The characters don't seem upset...should we be? Story: Wow. So Rick Remender is an up and coming writer - this does not bode well for me liking comics in the future. Rick is quoted as saying he thought sci fi lost its bite and this story was going to put that bite back. Apparently "bite" means - I will make a story so confusing and nonsensical and so ADHD i won't conclude one plot before going into the next unfocused plot. We have a space station overrun by man eating monsters and another alien race trying to get them onto Earth and then a time traveling interlude that involves robots and ape men and big brains and traitors. Then the time police get mad at Heath for going back in time. Then they release him for no reason. Then he is on Earth and somehow survives to find his ex wife and then a traitor is revealed in a cliffhanger. Oh! Good Rick! Whenever in doubt, reveal a traitor! Meanwhile - does our hero do anything impactful? Not really. Is there any internal logic to the story? Nope. Should I be sad the Earth has been destroyed...I would be, but PLOT TWIST Rick is a traitor to good writing.
Fear Agent has been on my radar since I first noticed the volumes on the pre-order list from Image. Rick Remender has always been a great writer in my opinion and I mean that he has ambitious storylines that aren't carbon copies of one another. This volume has been described to me as a throwback to the pulp heroes but with an anti-hero from the 50s noir era. This I can agree with as he is definitely the reluctant hero who is called to duty.
Why the 4.5?
I will say the first third of the book is fun and out there. I enjoyed the book and it shares a similar fast paced story like Invincible by Robert Kirkman. I had my issues with Invincible and I'm happy to say I didn't have them with Fear Agent. The book hits a slump after some fast paced action and it goes a little slow for a few issues but that doesn't last long. I merely dropped half a rating for this drop in quality as I didn't feel it was warranted. I've since purchased the next three final editions, super bummed I missed the hardcover editions. The artwork is fun and I totally understand the pulp description. I can't recall having so much fun with a book like Fear Agent. I'm now in a mode to finish these alongside Deadly Class but maybe I'm planning too much.
I thought this was going to be great. I love Remender, but it's clear he hadn't rounded into form yet by this one. Intentionally misogynistic and very immature themes. making alcoholism jokes every other page, and I realize there were plenty of 60's Sci-Fi male focused genre that presented like this I didn't find this much fun.
average adventure Sci-Fi comedy at best. There are much better Rick Remender books out there
(Zero spoiler review) I'm not too sure what it is about Rick Remender, but the guy seems to struggle with pulling me in with his opening few issues of a run. I read Strange Girl a week or so ago, and by the end of issue two, I was ready to toss the book and never look back. Whether its the way he goes about telling a story, thinking the reader wants boldness and bombast over intrigue and exploration, I can't say, but Fear Agent, despite being rather pretty to look at, seemed to be a case of style over substance. Again though, I could tell there was something there beneath the surface, if Remender chose to pick away at it, and by the end of this first volume, pick he did. Now, it took longer to get going than Strange Girl did, although it does appear like the payoff will be far greater than in that decent, although far from exemplary story. By the final couple of issues of volume one, I was well and truly on board for Heath Huston, and his sordid little personal tale of hubris and making aliens go boom. Again, its the small character moments that are making this book what it is. Big blowy up bits and alien blood is fine in between the build up (if its earned) although that mindless story has never been my cup o tea. As long as Remender continues to lean upon the framework he has bene building for Huston and the growing gaggle of oddballs and misfits he is assembling around him, as well as some interesting world building, then Fear Agent and I will get along famously. Its rare that a series will have two ongoing artists whose styles compliment each other well, without one showing up the other, though Remender has found that here with Moore and Opena. It went a long way to keep me interested when the story wasn't quite going where I would have wanted, whereas Strange Girls art was much more sporadic and less impressive, leading to my shorter fuse with it. As long as these two boys fill out the remainder of this run, my eyes will be happy. And as long as Remender fulfils his potential on this one, then my brain will be happy, too. 3.75/5
This book contains a really engaging and gritty pulp science-fiction story with bags of fun and some real depth in places too. It collects #1-#4 of the story arc "Re-Ignition" and #1-#6 of the story arc "My War"
"Fear Agent: Final Edition" tells the story of a down-and-out alien hunter, who takes out alien pests for a price. His job is somewhere betweena future space-age pest-controller and a full-on mercenary for hire. This is clearly not a job he finds easy but he always (well sometimes) catches a break. Whether his need for whiskey helps him or not is not very clear. However, despite his desperate struggles, he does seem to rise to the occasion, especially when the chips are down.
This has been a really great read, with moments of laugh out loud fun, moments where I felt sympathy and real concern for the characters and a large side-order of escapism. The dialogue was sharp and witty and the story was very well crafted by Rick Remender. The art was dynamic and characterful and although two different artists were used for the two different story arcs I really had to look carefully to see the difference. It reminded me of some of the very best 2000AD Judge Dredd art. At first the characters seemed interesting, stylish and kind of fun in a sarcastic way but I feared they might lack depth. However in Chapter 4 (Issue #4) of "Re-Ignition", Rick Remender brought new depths to Heath Huston's character, really stepping up his characterisation to a new gear and I felt like Heath became much more real. This brought the story up from 3 stars up to 5 for me.
Overall Fear Agent has all the ingredients of a really fabulous tale and I think I will most definitely go on to read Fear Agent: Final Edition Volumes 2 and 3. It was one of the best pulp sci-fi comics I've read in the many years. Highly recommended
I wasn't really left with a clear picture of what I thought of this book, until I hit the back cover blurb, and a quote saying it was "well-constructed". That is the one thing it isn't – it seems written very much on the hoof, with a gung-ho space pilot and the girl he can't bed first anxious about Earth being invaded by the most lethal species in the multiverse, then spun millennia into the past to focus on a completely different threat entirely, then facing the fallout from that, which does kind of hook on to the first plot strand, but… Now I didn't take completely against this narrative flippancy, but I did see the slightly ambling through-line as a flaw, as was the wordiness of some sections, towards the end in particular. I'd still easily click 'download' for the rest of the series, but expectations couldn't be called high for the result.
Fear Agent is written by one of my favorite comic book writers, Rick Remender. It's a wild science fiction ride, that is filled with trademark Remender humor and relate-able characterizations. Remender remembers its the characters that draw you in to a scifi tale not the ideas or aliens or explosions (although, there is plenty of funky aliens for you). As always, the tone is slightly pulpy yet grounded (like the best scifi). Tony Moore's artwork is vivid and excellent and matches Remender's pulpy storytelling tone just fine. The story is about an alcoholic and washed-up space faring action hero cowboy named Heath Huston, who discovers an extraterrestrial plot to kill off the human species, and has to resume his role as peacekeeper...the galaxy's last Fear Agent.
Piccola postilla sui disegni e colorazione, davvero gradevoli.
Big Remender fan but this is one of my least favourite books of his
I found the first half of this volume quite a mediocre, pulp sci fi action comic. The humour and tone wasn’t really landing and I couldn’t have been any less invested watching this guy fighting a bunch of boring cartoony aliens.
However, quite interestingly as it progressed it got better to the point that you can almost see the genesis of Remender’s (often philosophical) writing style start to appear in the last couple of issues.
Tony Moore and Jerome Opena’s art also improve as it goes on. It’s given me hope for the rest of the series, thankfully, as I’ve got another 3 volumes to go.
I wanted to like this more than I did. Heath Huston is an ignorant, chauvinist, alcohol redneck who’s also hilarious and really good at zapping aliens. That said, his whole “I need a bottle of jack” routine did get old after a while. And the story…while some parts had cool ideas, it was too scattered and frenetic; it felt like changing the channel rapidly on a bunch of different sci-fi movies. None of the subplots had any sort of resolution before the story zapped off in another direction. Still, I’ll probably pick up the next one some day.
Miserable guy puts up a toxic front to avoid dealing with issues that, as far as I can tell, were probably his fault to begin with. Somehow, all three of the women he's encountered have at one point been attracted to him, for absolutely no discernable reason. And then lots of alien nonsense and time travel I guess?
I'll give volume two a shot because lots of people are saying this volume isn't a good indicator of the whole story, but I find it hard to believe my opinion will change drastically.
Awful title aside, this was a thrilling first volume (of 4 in this new print). This is also my first Rick Remender book who I've heard a lot about. I'm glad I started here - the story is real pulpy with a ton of really creative and crazy ideas while still maintaining enough heart and intelligence to make it a really great read. I'm pumped for the next volumes!
It gets a little more involved than I first thought it would. To be clear, that is a good thing. There is much more to this story, and I want to figure it out. The characters are, at first, one-dimensional, but they get more complex and lifelike the more I read. Well drawn, lots of laughs and action. I look forward to continuing the series.
A wild science fiction ride, Tony Moore's artwork is vivid and excellent and Remender's universe building is rich and entertaining. Story-wise this goes off the rails pretty quickly, but that's also sort of the fun of the thing. Folks into stuff like Rick & Morty or Space Dandy might wanna go back and have a look at this title.
I expected to like this a lot more than I did I thought the story was ok it did improve towards the end but what kept pulling me back more than anything was the artwork and character design. The artwork is absolutely incredible! I think I will continue with it and check out the next volume at some point to see if the story improves but I'm not going to dive into it straight away.
[3.0] Decent adventure overall, but overrated. There’s a lot of action, and not a lot of world building or story. Just enough to get by explaining the next action scene. The main character is a bit juvenile and one dimensional. Similar vibes as Transmetropolitan in character, but a bit funnier. There’s just not enough interest for me, as to what will happen next. I’ll skip reading the rest
Decent, fun in a silly way space adventure. Characters aren’t incredibly interesting. The alien designs are kind of neat I guess. Story gets mildly notable at the end of this volume. On the fence in terms of whether volume two will set the hook for me. TBD
