This tell-all Beltway memoir by former Secret Service Special Agent Ronald Malcolm (who protected President Jack Stanton during his 8-year presidency, 1993 - 2001) reminds all the world of the difficulties of political idealism when it is wed to the personal flaws of politicians. Along with protecting Stanton from assassins and other injury, Special Agent Ronald Malcolm must protect the President MOST OF ALL from himself--and from his wife Susan, who in the fantastic reality of this book is destined to become President as well. FREEDOM'S CAP is a roman a clef, "starring" the biggest names in Washington. But, as narrator & author Ronald Malcolm (also not his real name) writes, "It doesn't much matter what I call them...we all know who they really are."
For younger readers, FREEDOM'S CAP will entertain with the secrets of those earlier times. For older ones, this tell-all by this see-all will remind all what happened.
Other "cast members" include LaVar Underwood, a handsome Black lobbyist who has intertwined consulting and race; Leon Birnbaum, a Machiavellian publicist who redefines polling the body politic; Lucy Fitz, a divorced mother of two who loves working in the West Wing but requires a second income; and finally President Jack Stanton's own ambitious wife, Susan Radford Stanton, one person he cannot charm and one destined--in this story's fantastic reality--to run for and win the presidency in 2016.
Is it possible to hold the reins of U.S. power for more than two 4-year terms? And, if it is, where will that lead our country? FREEDOM'S CAP answers these questions and entertains at the same time. Special Agent Malcolm opens on his first day protecting POTUS, the President of the United States, code-named "Eagle":
"Gaze determined and fixed, I already had Jack Stanton straight in my sights that first day, even before he broke my official 'perimeter of responsibility' as we'd been trained to play it, lumbering up the flimsy steps of the chopper until he was silhouetted in the hatchway in front of me. Just for the record, our pick-up wasn't at Camp David, not like it says on the 'official' itinerary in the National Archives, but a half score miles up the Potomac from Crown, in a cleared riding circle in back of one of the plantation homes along the Virginia side near McLean. I didn't catch a view of the rendezvous but I'll never forget the huge hangover of her Undisciplined, carefree and exposed on the breeze just as he entered. That's what I want to share That everything about Jack Stanton in those days was just so damn huge, like a target I'd never adequately imagined before. With no limits, like the nation itself, and a paunchy middle the size of the Pillsbury Doughboy's, Eagle's appetite filled up the cabin like a vacuum sucking its presence into every nook and cranny of our emptiness. He seemed so exposed in every way that he might as well have had a bull's eye stickered to the flat tip of his puckered red nose. It scared the living daylights out of me.
"After all, this was my first day. A Special Agent with the elite United States Secret Service Presidential Protection Division (or 'USSS PPD' for short), I was now sworn to protect this man--with my life.
"You may think you know this story, but you likely aren't fully acquainted with who I am yet, even if you have read a book called PRIMARY COLORS, because the anonymous author there never quite got up to the point in the story where I cut in. That book stretched the truth a bit, for art's sake I guess...."
