Jared King had endured more than the normal amount of danger in his life. He’d jumped from planes into hot landing zones, been shot at, almost blown up—twice, damn near killed more times than he cared to remember. Yet, nothing in his past compared to the danger of admitting his feelings for Christian Koehler. When Jared pushed Christian away too hard, once too often, the young man finally left and took Jared’s heart with him. Once upon a time, Christian Koehler had idolized Jared King. But after two years of the arrogant man's hot and cold mind games, Christian avoided the sexy Guardian like the plague. The jagged line between love and hate was paper thin and razor sharp, and Jared had pushed Christian across that line, with prejudice. When Christian discovers what he believes is a common thread in several disappearances of the homeless and at-risk teens in his area, he immediately tells his superiors. But neither his employer nor the D.C. cops believe the missing children are connected. Desperate to find out the truth, Christian swallows his pride and returns to the Kings and Guardian for help. Jared seizes the opportunity to investigate the missing children and the unexpected chance to once again be part of Christian’s life. What he finds leads to a tempest of deceit, danger and intrigue that pulls Christian back into Jared’s world. This time, Jared vows to fight to keep Christian with him forever—no matter the cost
USA Today and Amazon Bestselling Author, Kris Michaels is the alter ego of a happily married wife and mother. She writes romance, usually with characters from military and law enforcement backgrounds.
Kris was born and raised in South Dakota. She graduated many years ago from a high school class consisting of 13 students (yes that is thirteen, eleven girls and two boys...lucky boys). She joined the military, met her husband, and traveled the world. Today she lives on the Gulf Coast and writes full time.
Kris is an avid people watcher and dreamer. The stories she writes are crafted around the hopes and dreams of a true romantic. She believes love is essential, people are beautiful, and everyone deserves a happy ending.
When she isn't writing Kris enjoys a full life revolving around family, friends, laughing, whiskey, and cold red wine. (Yes cold...don't judge.)
I received an ARC for an honest review (and bought it because it was THAT good!!)
I asked Kris whether this book could be read as a stand-alone as I hadn't read the rest of the series (as it's M/F) and I loved her first M/M book so much. So I was given the task (YES!!!) to see how this stands on it's own for all those readers who are only interested in M/M. The resounding answer is YES, THIS WORKS GREAT AS A STAND-ALONE. Even knowing it is part of a series the story has no holes and I was not left wondering what was going on.
Jared and Christian are off the charts HOT! There is plenty of story woven through the hotness. This is definitely a 5 star read and I can't wait for more M/M stories from Kris
2.5 stars. I'd read a stand alone MM that I liked by this author, so decided to try this. It was part of a series that's otherwise been MF, I guess. There seems to be a story arc for the series but it was integrated fairly well and I wasn't terribly confused. However, Jared is an alpha-hole and treats Christian like crap for a couple of years. Christian, who was rescued by the group of guys from his evil family at 19, is madly in love but finally tells him to fuck off. Another year down the line, Christian needs help from the super-rich, ultra famous, worlds greatest, family run private police/mercenary force. Jared decides it's time to come out of the closet, that everyone already knew he was in, and Pursue Christian. Christian promptly falls for the lame excuses Jared provides. The danger/mystery thing is part of the story arc, so there's no real resolution.
I feel like the relationship detail pretty much falls into line with those from MF stories. My overall impression is alpha-hole MC and chicks with dicks. Added bigger/smaller, top/bottom stereotypes. Readable, well edited but very meh. Boring use of tropes. I guess it's okay if you like the series.
I don't know why this book has such high ratings. Nothing made any sense!!! I get that it's a book in a series and I admit, I haven't read earlier books, but nonetheless, character's actions did not make sense.
First of all, what kind of social worker is Christian to exclude the possibility of
What kind of private security agency has a public face so well known they're like Apple, or Microsoft or Facebook? What kind of private security firm has police powers. What kind of private security firm is scrutinised by the public in terms of public perception. It's not the NSA! They are mercenaries/PIs, that's the extent of their authority. They may be able to influence those in positions of authority but they, themselves, do not wield official authority. Is this set in an alternative universe? Who gives a flying flip what someone is doing in their private life when they're a private security firm?!! The scandal would be on a par with a celebrity coming out. Like if one of the Kardashians announced they were gay, there's a lot of them so I am sure one of them is gay. I don't follow them, I am just aware they are celebrity celebrities, i.e. people who are famous for no particular reason.
The progression of Christian and Jared's relationship made no sense. Jared pushes Christian away for years
The sex was just terrible, so mechanical. He stroked his lover's body. He moved his lover to the side. Do you mean Christian? He stroked Christian?
Just a terrible book. Thank eff for Amazon Kindle, because if I paid for it I would be mighty pissed.
I LOVE THIS BOOK! Please know that I don't actively seek out m/m romances, I do read them if they are part of a series so I am not adverse to this all. I have been wanting to read about Jared and Christian eversince Kris Michaels hinted about these two in her previous books.
Thank you for not disappointing me and oh boy, when Jared finally pulled his head out of his ass, he can be the most sweetest and caring lover ever. I love how Kris Michaels made Christian big and strong .. he sounds so yummy. He might be young and had a horrible childhood but he grew up to be someone whose heart is so big and pure. I so hated Jared for the shit things that he did to Christian but like I said, Jared redeemed himself and when he explained about his fear, I do understand why he put Christian's heart through a wringer.
For those who follow this series and finds that m/m romance is not for you, I do urge that you give this book a try. It would be such a shame to skip this book as you won't really get to experience this series in its entirety. The sex scenes were really tastefully done and I must say so freaking hot too.
This was a good book but I'm super irritated that I bought the "new" release that was actually a second edition. I knew this book sounded familiar but I'm always happy to try a new established author to the m/m genre....
This book originally came out in 2016 and re-released with new cover and new publisher in 2018 so buyer beware.
Brilliant book , outstanding series. This just keeps getting better and better. A gay romance with all the feels and some particularly steamy moments. Jared and Christian must learn to live and love together, no mater the cost .
Finally Jared’s story! I couldn’t wait for this story! Finally, FINALLY Jared’s story was being told. And it was a doozy! Jared had pushed away his sexual orientation, and his feelings for Christian, for years. Realizing how close he came to losing him forever created an epiphany that forced Jared to face his feelings and declare his intentions once and for all. Put up or shut up was the order of the day…. “I’m afraid of you.” That is the perfect summary of both Jared and Christian’s feelings for each other. Jared spent so much time being hot and cold that trust was non-existent between them. Christian still loved Jared but that didn’t mean he liked or believed in him anymore. Their characters were so different. Jared was the cooler, alpha male in every way – from being an a**hole to his protective streak, he was in charge all the way. Christian, despite his horrific upbringing, seemed gentle and innocent in so many ways. That didn’t mean he couldn’t stand up for himself. He did. He wasn’t allowing Jared off the hook for his past behaviour (as well he shouldn’t). From start to finish emotions were high on all fronts. The tension and chemistry between Jared and Christian was everything I’d hoped it would be. The danger and mystery that surrounded them aided and abetted their relationship while providing the crisis they needed to figure out what was really important. As with all the books in this series family was a huge part of the plot with sibling support at an all-time high. Rough and tumble, but loving when it mattered, they are the best people to have at your back (while poking fun and teasing at the front). I hope there are more Kings in the future – there is one ‘Queen’ that I hope gets her story soon!
This was like most of the series, a 3-4-star read for me. The premise here is that Jared has blown hot and cold with Christian, the young man his family rescued from an abusive situation. Part of the problem is that he’s not officially “out” and the other part is that “misguided hero tries to protect love interest” trope.
This m/m romance was action-packed yet incredibly sweet as we’ve come to expect from this author. Once Jared decided to grovel, he did a pretty good job. I feel like unlike in previous novels, the action suspense part of this novel wasn’t at all resolved at the end of this book and rather a specific suspense story arch was further built up in this book that is going to be carried into future books. I still love this series 5 books in and I recommend it.
Christian and Jared might be the most courageous and strong couple you will ever read about. Christian having survived the worst a person can survive by the hand of those that are meant to love and protect is something that will make you swoon for him. Jared King a hero, strong and brave in his everyday work, as a Guardian he protects and save people everyday. As the face of Guardian he is often who the media tracks. Being together for Christian would be a dream he never thought would be realized. Be together for Jared would be throwing the man he loves in the lime light and all that it entails. Choices were made and hearts broken, until Christian need the help of Guardian. This sexy, passionate and danger filled read will have you enraptured at every page. The twist and turns that entwine these two is nothing short of destiny coming to pass. Jared was meant to have Christian in his life and vice a versa. I love the dynamic of the all the King brothers and sister and wonder if there could be something in the future for maybe Nic and Jewel??? A thrill ride you won't want to miss into the danger and evil of this world. Jared and Christian are the light in the darkness to each other.
"The jagged line between love and hate is paper thin and razor sharp."
Jared is the lastest offering from Kris Micheals Kings of Guardians Series and was another great instalment. Although it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend you read the other books in the series.
I wasn't aware that Jared's story was m/m which admittedly I tend to steer clear of...yeah I know I'm not normal however, that being said I really enjoyed it. I thought the story flowed, with Ms Micheals writing style combining witty one liners with some pretty steamy scenes all interwoven with a suspense filled plot. I thought the characters were well developed with lots of personality. As well as the secondary characters. A great addition to the series.
Looking forward to more in the series.

Seriously alpha men and women. I stumbled upon a few authors but none captured my attention as far as their storytelling the way Kris did. Love these books and the spin off series. They keep on getting better and better. You don't know what you are missing if you don't read Kris's work.
New to me author. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of this author's M/M book. I was disappointed in the epilogue, because it didn't involve the MCs.
I loved Christian from the moment he was rescued, but he was always portrayed as a weaker character who failed to stand up for himself. Finally here we see his sass, he is all grown up and is more comfortable in his skin, he has confidence and is willing to fight for what he wants...which makes me love him more! Jared however comes very close to breaking Christian and whilst I understand he has demons, I cannot forgive him for his cold and callus ways. Yes, he works hard to redeem himself, but of all the King's I like him least!
I know love is love. But I cannot relate to m/m. That being said the author did a great job showing the crap people say and do because of same s$x couples. It is heartbreaking. The thread of trafficking that has run through the last couple of books is ramping up. I am so afraid to read Chiefs story.
Wow! Mind blowing! What an amazing love story between two wonderful human beings! My first M/M book and I absolutely loved it. And I thought that us, heterosexuals, have to deal with issues and prejudice! Stop complaining people! Put yourself in the shoes of Christian and Jared just for the amount of time it takes you to read this incredible book and then complain! My mom raised me open-minded and always told me that what two consensual adults do in their bedroom is not of my business! And she was so right! I'm wondering if we go back in the times of the ancient Roman Empire, for example- just for an hour and show the world about sexuality back then- prejudice, hatred, ignorance and indifference would still exist! Sadly, probably it would! Thank you Kris Michaels for opening my mind even more and teaching me to stop complaining!
Kris Michaels deals with some deeply emotional, sensitive issues in this wonderful love story. Before you can "out" yourself to others you have to acknowledge who you are to yourself. Jared fought that battle alone for years but an unexpected act puts Christian firmly in Jared's path and it's time for him to put up or shut up. You could really empathize with Christian's pain. You can only put up with rejection for so long then you have cut your losses and move on. It takes a lot to gain trust and Jared needs to scramble to do that. Together Jared and Christian are incredibly sensual together. Underlying all this, the investigation into missing chilfren starts to heat up. Fascinating book!
Macho man Loves macho man...not your typical love story, but still a love story. Jared King, spokesman and face for Guardian has resisted the pull between himself and Christian for three long years doing everything he could to push him away. When Christian brings a case of missing children to Guardian Security they are thrown together again and when Christian is attacked Jared has to come to terms with himself or lose the chance for happiness. I would have liked to read the conclusion of the missing children but here's to moving on to the next book to find out!
I have read the other books in this series and was uncertain if I would like tgis one as I am not one to read M/M books. However because I had read the other books I bought this one and sat down to read. OMG...Ms. Michaels did not disappoint. Jared and Christian make an awesome couple. Their love was evident and it spoke volumes how they interacted after th3 decision to try. Definitely worth the read. But if a gay relationship makes you uneasy this is not the book for you. But if you are willing to be open to something different take a chance on this book!
This book was 100% about raw vulnerability. It was about accepting that sometimes your best idea of something really isn’t what is best and accepting that once you accept yourself others don’t matter. Jared and Christians book was powerful on many levels but it was their connection their need for each other was what made this book. This book also deepened the underlying story from the other books... I’m very interested to see how this plays out...
Re-read 2020: still probably my favorite of the series
Jared has been struggling with his feelings for Christian for over 3 years. Now Christian's life is in danger and that was his wake up call. That is, if Christian forgives him. Christian is a social worker and has noticed kids are coming up missing. He can't get any help from the police and finally goes to Guardian for help. Then he almost dies. Now that Jared and Christian are together, they are dealing with the media circus along with looking for the missing kids. Are they any closer to finding out who is behind the disappearances?
Two men have had a love hate relationship for over three years.
Jared and Christian are put in a situation that brings their relationship to a head and gives them a chance towards a future. This book carried a warning due to the sexual content between the two main caricatures. Please do not let this put you off. This is a love story but also pulls the work Guardian dose to a new level. That makes the book valuable to the series.
Welp, this series gets more convoluted as it progresses. But the complexities don't always make sense. They seem to be thrown out there, kind of stream-of-consviousness style. Now we have more Russian mob involvement, which is dovetailing with a human trafficking scheme discovered by Christian, one of the M/M partners.
Jared is the other lead in this pairing. Throughout the series, he's been the biggest of all the d!cks. Super rude, aggressively so, cold, calculating, and manipulative as hell. He began toying with Christian a few years back when Christian was a damaged, wounded young man who hadn't even started to step out of the closet. Christian is quite clearly portrayed as a beautiful doe, so gorgeous that both men and women want him, regardless of their $exual orientation. Jared is older, experienced, and a bulldozer. He spent several years teasing Christian physically and mentally, in public, then hotly pushing him away, also in public. When Christian finally refuses to be the boy toy any longer and turns his back, Jared decides he can't live without him. Fast forward to a bunch of lame excuses why he was such a dirtbag, Christian capitulates with barely a sigh and falls back into Jared's arms.
Christian's character is a hotbed of stereotypes for a young gay man. He's really been given damn short shrift here. He's portrayed as so naive and innocent that it's impossible to believe that he's a professional social worker. When he begins realizing that a number of his prepubescent clients are disappearing under odd circumstances, he's confused and concerned. When there's a mention of these kids being trafficked for $exual purposes, he's shocked and stunned to silence, and honestly acts as if he's never HEARD of trafficking. He even says, "But why? Why would anyone do that?" Holy cow, seriously? Like $ex trafficking amongst the super young homeless population is an unknown concept? It's not very satisfying to have such a naive, stereotyped character here.
Jared, quite frankly, steamrolls this poor dude even after he stops using his superpowers for evil. Jared makes all the decisions, and Christian acquieces with almost no comment. The fact that these are two men doesn't figure here at all. Their relationship is like many others in this series, where one partner runs the show and the other murmurs "OK" a lot, all in the name of "protection."
And, the longer this series goes, the weirder it gets about the Guardians organization. This went from a small number of former military teams available for hire to do some dirty (but always honorable) work, to a giant Blackrock-type megalithic org complete with daily appearances on entertainment news channels. (And BTW, Blackrock is not a bunch of good guys.) That part I really don't get. Why would a security company be publicly blasted all over the planet daily and still be able to take cases that require total blackout publicity? It's really impossible to believe, even if it is fiction. I'm fast losing interest in this series because of the nonsensical change in focus from people dedicated to helping others to a giant corporation that seems to be getting mega famous for, well, being famous. There's nonstop talk about fancy dinners and restaurants, swish apartments, private jets, and unlimited funding for virtually any pet project. There's already plenty of that garbage in the real world. I'm just not interested in the billionaire lifestyle. Throwing the mob trope in as well guarantees all the most popular tropes are represented.
There's also the continuation of a number of TSTL behaviors, which increases the frustration factor.
I don't think I'll be continuing the series. It's too bad as this author is a great writer. But her templated leads and unfocused, overarching storyline don't bring anything unique or even heartfelt to the table at this point in the series.

I decided to start the year with a re-read from one of my favorite authors… Kris Michaels. For those of us who are already familiar with The Kings of Guardian series, we finally understand the reasons why Jared has kept Christian at a distance for three years. I love their story and I was so happy they finally got their HEA. The first kiss under the mistletoe, a fire, the Russian Mafia and the best wedding proposal ever! The world building evolves side by side with the characters and I just love to see all the King brothers and sisters growing, falling in love, falling in lust, going down but getting right back up, all the bear hugs, the banter, the hot steamy moments, the angst, found family, the adventures and the missions they get themselves in. You got to love all the J’s in the King family. Jacob, Joseph, Jason, Jared, Jasmine, Jewell, Jade, Justin… At the beginning I struggled a bit to keep up with the names but now, after 3 years into the stories of Kris, I think I could take a quiz and answer correctly… maybe… In Jared’s book, book #5, Christian, as a social worker, believes there’s something in the disappearances of the homeless and at-risk teens in his area. Neither his employer nor the D.C. cops believe the missing children are connected though. He wants to find the truth at all costs and he knows the only way is to go back to the Kings and Guardian for help. Kris Michaels usually writes MF. Jared’s and Christian’s story is a beautifully written MM romance and it was one of my first MM reads.
In Jared’s book, we finally learn why he has acted the way he has for the past three years. I’ll admit I wasn’t sure his reasons would be good enough for the pain he caused, but I understood once Jared revealed his true feelings and explained why he kept his distance.
Poor Christian had been hurt so many times by Jared. He was determined to keep his distance and never have any further interactions with him again. However when Christian discovered a problem at work, the Guardian Security company were his only hope.
I was so glad Christian listened to Jared and gave him the opportunity to explain. He actually understood Jared’s reasoning once he opened up about his fears. There was even a point where Christian witnessed first hand what Jared had been scared of happening, and Christian then had a deeper respect for Jared’s feelings.
There is a back story that has been carrying through the last several books and it continued with this one. The Guardians are still after the Russians. They have pushed the wheels into motion on a plan, that although it may take a while to work, will hopefully ultimately be successful. My fingers are crossed for frequent updates on Chief, so I am definitely planning on continuing this series.
I borrowed Jared ~ Kings of Guardian ~ Book 5 by Kris Michaels from the Kindle Unlimited Program.
Jared is the public face of Guardian Security and as such keeps his reputation clean, so when he has strong feelings for Christian, he acts on them in private and then pushes Christian away makking it seem like he is playing a wicked game to Christian. Christian distances himself from all the Kings until he needs their help.
He works for a non-profit that helps homeless kids on the streets and some of his kids have gone missing. Both his agency and the police have turned him down so he approaches Guardian.
A fire caused by arson, with a crowbar under the door to trap Christian, a drive-by shooting, hacking by the Russian mafia, and finding the man at the non-profit that was giving the information to the Russians for the children, a phoney set of US Marshall's and an accident with a full semi tanker keep the action high for Christian and Jared.
The way the author presented the conflict and resolution between Jared and Christian, how they learned to trust through open communications and the family support made Jared's story interesting and full of reality of the conflicts a gay couple faces.
Because of the subject matter, this is a hard read. Kids being sold as “toys” to buyers. Christian is almost killed by a co-worker, who is working for the Russian mafia. As the plot unfolds, Christian’s idea that children are disappearing takes on a life of its own. Guardian was not interested initially. Jewell, the computer whiz starts finding things that don't make sense. And suddenly Christian and Jared are ambushed. It’s all hands on deck. As Jared and Christian find their way through early relationship and marriage, and the impact of Jared “coming out” in his role as the face of Guardian, each of them finds their way.
I usually skip the sex scenes in the author’s books. I have no interest in seeing them naked.
I appreciate that the language in this book is so much less than the other books. Maybe bc there are children in the King family now?
The F-bombs become tiresome. This family of CEO’s and successful business people can surely not rely on F-bombs as their major vocabulary. Much much less in this book.
Bravely facing ever challenge thrown at him as a cop and as a security operator, Jared King’s privately struggled to face the challenge of ‘coming out’. It’s a necessity for the relationship Jared and social worker/former family ward Christian Koehler want. Christian’s over their bed buddy/secret lover thing and has avoided the family to heal his heart for two years.
Christian’s bothered by the disappearance of several homeless/troubled teens that regularly come to his work center but no one else seems to care. The police and Guardian decline to investigate, Jared seizes the opportunity to make amends with Christian and volunteers to work the case on his own time.
Despite misgivings, Christian accepts Jared’s help and they plan to meet at Christian’s office to discuss the case. Alone in the building, Christian gathers paperwork to share with Jared and realizes he’s trapped in a small room. Jared’s angry and upset when he arrives and sees the building ablaze. Rating: 4.5stars
Jared is the fifth instalment in the Kings of Guardian series by Kris Michaels. It is a perfect mix of action, romance, and family drama that was so easy to get hooked on. Each book spotlights a different member of the King ‘family’ - the elite operatives working for Guardian Security - so you get a fresh story every time, but with plenty of familiar faces popping in along the way. The plots are fast-moving, with everything from high-risk rescues to international missions, but what really makes the series stand out is the loyalty, teasing banter, and the intense, heartfelt romances which gives all the action so much more depth. If you like romantic suspense, military romance, or strong law enforcement vibes, intriguing characters, and a sense of found family, then this series is definitely worth diving into. It’s exciting, emotional, and just the right amount of addictive. Happy Reading…
