A cookbook that lives up to its name, this collection of recipes are for basic “staples” like lasagna, roast chicken and treacle pie. Appreciate the use of grams for measuring (easier for allergy substitutions). Beautiful photos of each dish. Would be a great gift for a new cook who is a Mary Berry fan.
I love Mary Berry Cookbooks and was so excited to get this one! It has some great recipes...and at least one really bad one! We tried the Honey Chicken first. Wow. It was awful! The sauce was really terrible. We tried fixing it, but it just was not fixable. I literally ended up washing the sauce off of the chicken, we shredded it and added barbeque sauce and had pulled chicken sandwiches the next day!
On the bright side, the next recipe we tried was Chicken with Tomato, Mozzarella & Basil and it was awesome! It was so flavorful and delicious--we all loved it!! The One Tray Sausage Supper is easy to make and quite yummy! My family are not huge fans of beets (though I personally think they are fabulous roasted like this!), so I leave them off most of the time. Just add a few more potatoes and carrots and it's still great! For a great side dish, try Masses of Mash--a variety of flavorful mashed potatoes to go with a good meat dish.
There are tons of recipes I still want to try: Individual Cheese, Tomato & Thyme Tartlets, Beef Bourguignon, Treacle Tart and Baked Lemon Curd Cheesecake to name a few.
Overall, this is a delightful cookbook, just as I knew it would be. Just ignore the Honey Chicken recipe and you'll be good!
I received a copy of this book from Trafalgar Square through IPG for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Although some recipes did not seem too difficult not all recipes came with a photo whilst others had several photos. I would have preferred each recipe to have a photo so I knew what I was aiming for. Many of the recipes contained cheese and as a cheese hater there were an awful lot of recipes I have to ignore
Recipe selection is great and instructions are well-written but they are not for beginners. The recipes don't necessarily translate well outside of the British kitchen/grocery store. Photos are beautiful but there could have been more of the steps - and not just for the simplest recipes, like the plum crumble (an odd one to do step by step and I can only assume it's because it looked nice).
This is full of delicious meals, appetizers, and desserts...but it’s hard to translate from British to American in terms of ingredients and measurements. Many ingredients are difficult to source in a small rural American town. Four stars, if I lived in the UK.
Mary Berry is the real deal. Is it worth it to have to convert grams to ounces, Celsius to Fahrenheit? Yes it is. The recipes are clear, the photos are very nice and it’s a fun follow up to watching her fantasy shows.
Loved the book and will add it to my Christmas wish list. It would have been helpful if a US facsimile or alternate was listed for the baking spread, which I take is Stork Margarine Spread.
A fine cookbook but many recipes are too fussy for most Americans to make. It's lovely to look at, and the photos of Mary Berry's happy face while pretending to bake are delightful.
