Hervor's lover is trapped in a world of nightmares. To save him, she must travel to a land of ice and cold to slay a witch-queen.
Untrustworthy allies fight at her side but force her to always watch her back. And the horrors the witch-queen can unleash exceed anything Hervor has ever faced.
Along with his wife and daughter, Matt lives as a digital nomad, traveling the world while researching for his novels. He reads approximately a bazillion books a year, loves video games, and relaxes by binge watching Netflix with his wife.
Matt writes retellings of mythology as dark, gritty fantasy. His passions of myths, philosophy, and history inform his series. He strives to combine gut-wrenching action with thought-provoking ideas and culturally resonant stories.
As a child, Matt read The Lord of the Rings with his parents. This sparked a lifelong obsession with fantasy and started him on a path of discovering the roots of fantasy through mythology. In exploration of these ideas, the Eschaton Cycle was born—a universe of dark fantasy where all myths and legends play out.
An unbelievable journey! Days of Fading Dreams is the fourth book in the Runeblade Saga. Speculative fiction. Norse mythology. These books must be read in order and, believe me, you don't want to miss any of it. Magnificently written, Matt Larkin is a master storyteller. He has the ability to completely submerge you into his world. It truly is a gift, an escape from reality. I want to say that this book is my favorite so far... but I probably said that about the last book. Hervor and Starkad continue their travels across Midgard and beyond they fulfill one oath and are set on a path that they may never come back from. Starkad is possessed by a mar, a nightmare demon. Hervor makes an oath to a wizard, a song crafter, to kill the witch queen, Loviater, in exchange for saving Starkads life. She requires the aid of acquaintances who may or may not be trusted. Their journey is wrought with peril. While concurrently, Starkad is in the Other world trying to live through his nightmares. I would highly recommend this book and the others in this series to anyone who enjoys these type of stories. I was provided an early copy by the author but my opinion and this review is my own.
The Quest was a success and Starkad and Hervor have delivered the Runeblade Skofnung to Gylfi to fulfill Starkad's oath. Now they are free to pursue their own destinies...but...in the world of Odin's new Midgard, things are never as easy as they seem.
Starkad is experiencing terrible nightmares that leave him more weakened and drained each day until, finally, he does not awaken and stays trapped within his own dreams and fears. Hervor's vengeance has arisen to curse her...and Starkad's life once more. To save him, she must embark upon a quest to far Pohjola, home of the Witch-Queens where she must deal with and dispatch Loviatar. Only by doing that will she be able to free Starkad from his nightmare prison and break the curse that has been thrust upon him by her actions.
Matt Larkin takes you on another wonderful journey through the frozen lands and mists of his mind as Hervor once more surrounds herself with old comrades, friends, and some not so to save the man she loves.
This is book four of a projected 5 book RUNEBLADE SAGA and the story only gets better with each tale.
You can read this as a stand alone adventure but, many of the underlying story arcs from the first 3 books criss-cross and raise their heads as this adventure builds.
Disclaimer: I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is literally the stuff of nightmares - not for the reader, but for Starkad and Hervor, as they find themselves on another perilous, "mist-mad" quest. As with the other books in the series, expect monsters, bloodshed and cussing galore. Also as with the other books in the series: Don't get too attached to your favorite characters, they might not make it out alive. :(
I found this story even darker than its predecessors and veering further into horror territory, in that way it felt thematically closer to book #2 in the series (Days of Bloody Thrones) than to books #1 (Days of Endless Night) and #3 (Days of Frozen Hearts).
