Not only does Riley gain a new brother with this family, but she also shares the house with his girlfriend and her brother.

Caleb, her step-brother’s best friend, confuses Riley with his overprotectiveness and sweet remarks. Always wary of strangers, why does she feel safe with him when they don’t know each other? When the nightmares that plague Riley every time she falls asleep come into her waking world, Riley will discover that not everything in her new home is as it seems. Magic exists, and Riley might just have abilities she never dreamed possible.

With a dark force stalking her, can she learn to trust her new family, or will she run away?

What. The. Actual. Fuck.

How in the hell is this book rated a 4.20!?

I mean, ok, we get it, The MC was abused, mistreated, emotionally scarred. But COME ON. Her lack of basic common sense doesn't make her endearing...it makes her pathetic. Her character is an alleged bookworm who prefers romance novels. Yet doesn't understand why a guy is making eyes at her???

🤦‍♀

Then there's the st-st-st-st-stutter.

Oh my god that stutter.

That goddamn I'm-gonna-gouge-my-fucking-eyes-out-if-I-have-to-read-it-one-more-time stutter....ugh...I'm not even gonna bother.

In closing, I'd recommend this book...if walking head on in to oncoming traffic wasn't an option 👎

Riley grew up in a nightmare. Her mother was mentally and physically abusive. Her stepfather was a monster. She was never shown any affection, never taken cared of; instead, she was used as a cook and maid and told how ugly, stupid, and worthless she was. She was the mistake, the one who ruined their lives. When her 17th birthday turned into a crime scene the state found her birth father and sent her to live with him. Mark and his wife Leanne, along with their son Jaxon and his girlfriend Cassie and best friend Caleb welcome her into their home and their lives. It's not so easy for Riley to settle in and accept what they are offering. Scarred from her past Riley stutters, jumps at every raised voice, startles when approached, and panics when touched. She assumes that she is unwanted, a burden and that they will eventually hurt her and kick her out. She doesn't sleep and when she does she has memory induced nightmares. She's a broken, little girl and despite her family's attempts at understanding, she can't bring herself to relax and trust them. Caleb seems to understand. His gentleness, his thoughtfulness, his kind words and actions get through to Riley. She feels safe with Caleb. She learns to trust Caleb. He is the beginning. Riley starts to allow herself to believe that she can have the kind of family she read about in her books. Maybe she's not a burden but truly wanted. For the first time in her life, she has moments of joy and freedom. Just as she's opening up to her new family, just as she's starting to feel something for Caleb, unusual occurrences start happening around Riley. She's not who she thought she was, she's something more. She has magic but so does her new family and they are with her during this confusing time. Riley has their total support even when she turns out to be more than they ever expected placing her in danger. Now the future depends on Riley. She will have to trust her family and their love completely if she's to save them all.

Wow! This is an amazing book! Riley is an incredible character; so authentic. The neglect, physical abuse, and especially the mental torture she suffered was portrayed in brutal nightmares. Her resulting PTSD was well-written. I work with Survivors. Every action, every reaction was genuine. I loved that we knew her inner thoughts. It gave each scene more impact. From the first page, I wanted to gather her up in my arms and hold her. Her mother's words to her broke my heart. They were so much worse than her stepfather's cruelty. So much more damaging. The day-to-day abuse was overwhelming. Riley's strength is unmatched. Just to still be standing is an accomplishment. Riley might be scared, timid, have no expectations or self-worth but she's not bitter or mean. She's damaged but not ruined. She's with the right people to lead her out of desperation. Her family was refreshing; a stepmother who opened her heart immediately; a father who showed vulnerability, guilt, and helplessness but immediately claimed her and offered his love and protection; and Jaxon who assumed the role of protector, jokester, brother from the first moment. Cassie was pure sweetness. Thank you for not making her the typical mean-girl! I loved her energetic, lightheartedness. And Caleb (swoon). Male perfection. His love, his understanding, his constant presence offering comfort and security were all exactly right for Riley. Spending time with these characters was a pleasure made even better by an entertaining paranormal story.

I will be honest, this book caught me a little by surprise. I expected to enjoy it having read a short story by Amanda Perry before. I didn't expect to love it like I did. I fell in love with the characters. I was drawn in from page one and read it in one sitting. Now I'm eagerly awaiting the next book.

I'll say it; I don't like Cassy.

The climax scenes at the end of the novel were a little too quick and without much action for my personal tastes. Riley accepts everything about her new life a little too easily. Cassy is just too much; she is all over Riley from literally the second she meets her in just a totally unrealistic way. I get that she is suppose to fill the best friend character role for this type of book but it was just way too forced and made me not like her. Riley's stutter was annoying to read, and its hard to lament that because its an important part of her character, but i did scan over her dialog because of it. That said, it was an interesting take on the paranormal genre. A good read for anyone who is a fan of girl who discovers her powers and the supernatural world and a host of problems that come with it.

*edit*
I had go back and reread book 1 because I didn't remember the story at all which made diving into book 2 a little difficult when my review didn't tell me anything.

So you have Riley a recently orphaned 17 1/2 year old who has grown up suffering sever abuse at the hands of her mom and step dad. She is scared of everything because anything she did, including just existing resulted in severe emotional and physical abuse. Riley is incredibly sheltered, even though she went to public school, she wasn't allowed friends or TV, but she had books (although at one point, I think in book 2) Riley mentions her mom limited the type of books she was permitted to check out from the library as a way to explain Riley's total lack of understanding of sex). We meet Riley as she is on a plane on her way to live with her recently discovered father, Mark, who had no idea she existed, his wife Leeanne and her son, who Riley's dad adopted when Jaxon was 3, and Cassie and Caleb who are the siblings of Mark's business partner and staying with Mark for the summer. Caleb and Jaxon are in college, Cassie is 18, not sure is she is in college. Riley is drawn to Caleb, has horrible nightmares, and keeps waiting to do something that gets her beaten by one of the guys in the house or gets her kicked out. Oh and along the way she discovers she is paranormal.

Spoilers from here on out

On second reading I still don't like Cassie in book 1, she improves for book 2. Cassie is written to be Riley's bubbly instant best friend, and she walks into the kitchen upon meeting Riley for the first time immediately exclaiming how excited she is to finally have a girl in their group and they will be best friends because she, Cassie, cant manage to get a friend. It's a little (read a lot) much. First of all, who walks in and meets a girl who has lost her mom and moved states to a family she didn't know existed that way? Second, really, Cassie has zero friends outside of her brother and soulmate (she and Jaxon are a bound couple).

Still staying on the relationship thing, it happens WAAAAAY two fast. By her like second night in the house she is calling Mark dad, Jaxon is calling her sis, and she is like hey this is my family, and I love them. I mean yeah they are all probably going to beat me and kick me out to the streets, but hey dad. It is just really hard to swallow.

Moving one, this is a paranormal series. I forget what they call themselves, elementals I think, because they control the elements, but the elementals aren't allowed to tell humans they exist, have a governing body, have to go before the council before they are 18 to display their power and be blessed or lose it, have a soulmate whom them can identify once they are blessed, and have a way of identifying each other that is explained in book 2. If an elemental isn't blessed before they are 18 their memories are wiped of anything elemental. Oddly enough the bad guys are fallen elementals who have their gods given powers stripped, but are then given powers by a bad god, and retain all their memories. Not sure how they retain their memories. Are they restored by the bad guys? Plot hole.

Another plot hole is in the fact that elementals aren't soul matched with regular humans, but Caleb knows the instant he touches Riley that she is his soul match, yet everyone thinks Riley is just a regular human. Similarly, the family seems pretty blase about getting Riley trained and prepared for her elemental test that has to happen in less than six months before she turns 18 or her powers and memory will be stripped from her, which is going to make for a pretty awkward soulmating. The other elementals spend years in special schools learning how to use their powers so they can pass the test and Riley's family is like meh, we'll practice in the backyard some.

I enjoyed the story, and will continue on with the series when book 2 comes out, but I wish Perry paid closer attention to the details, tied up all of the lose ends, didn't awkwardly shove characters into a trope box, and took time to develop the relationship. I'll stick around for the extra pages, it will actually endear me to the book and setting up alerts if it was better developed and polished. As it is it will sit in my series in progress spreadsheet that when I update every couple of months with what I've read and if there is anything new out i'll go oh yeah I guess i'll keep reading that. I want to be obsessed and this has all the elements to get me obsessed with just a little more work.

How is this book rated so high? It reads like a fracking Wattpad story. I'm so confused...

The writing is sooo amateurish, with long monologues of information about the fantasy aspect of the book dumped on you constantly after the halfway point. This author has clearly never heard of "show me, don't tell me". Everything was overtly stated. All background information, feelings, and plot points are given to you in massive paragraphs of a single character speaking. Nothing even happens in this story with the exception of a page long moment of danger where some actual bad guys show up and are immediately dealt with. It's pretty much entirely the main character hanging out with her cool new rich family.

Furthermore, this book was hardly a fantasy at all. It felt more like a book about overcoming abuse or an overwhelming instaromance more than it felt like any sort of fantasy. There was hardly any plot and the fantasy elements seemed to add nothing to the overall story. This book felt like it was a fantasy for the sake of being a fantasy.

And of course it had to include the classic line "You're not like other girls." with the implication that "other girls" are all gold diggers, just in case I didn't hate it enough already.

And oh the romance! It was so in your face. Like the love interest pretty much calls her "baby" every time he speaks to her. Every damn time.

There's also an excessive amount of swearing in this book for no apparent reason. Like I get in real life people do swear but there's a character who literally works a swearword into EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE. Sometimes twice a sentence. No one talks like that! It just felt so jarring every time the character spoke.

Overall, I didn't like this book. But I don't know, maybe I'm missing something because other people seem to think it's great for some reason.

Hmmm...

This one was surprisingly good. I had zero expectations when I went into this. Hadn't read any Amanda Perry, heard next to nothing about this, but picked it up on a whim - since I'd been diving through a bunch of Covey Publishing, thought I'd give this a try. And mostly, can't say I was disappointed.

I mean... ELEMENTALS! I love me some elemental magic-based reading :)

And the story is pretty well-crafted and written and edited. Mostly. Though not a ton really happens. It's almost all backstory/character growth/internal. LOL for most of the book they are pretty much just at home! Which sounds like it should be the most boring book ever. But somehow, it's just...not.

And the MC is a stuttering, incredibly submissive, seriously damaged and abused wimp. Which should be incredibly irritating. And usually would drive me up the friggin' wall. But again, somehow...doesn't. The entire book is about her growth from that to a much more confident woman, and you can see glimpses of what she is intended to become. I found myself interested in her and rooting for her.

And I found myself interested in the world-building. The uncovering of the system of magic and learning about it all with the heroine. Somehow it just mostly worked.

Yes, there is insta-love (as in this race of elementals is all about Soulmates...the other half the gods and goddesses have destined for their children). Which should be making me batty. But didn't. Partially because I loved Caleb's character and how he took care of Riley, and partially because she is so SO damaged that she needs that support. And honestly, though you kinda know what's coming from the second they meet (it was not hidden terribly well), you aren't hit over the head with it. And he has to go so slow and everything is revealed to the MC (and therefore the reader) so slowly that there is time for it to kinda feel like the relationship is developing. Sorta. I mean, they don't even kiss until nearly the end of the book. So I can more or less live with it.

I don't know. Overall, things just sorta worked for me, even though Perry kinda had all the "don'ts" in this one. And I have zero idea where this is going to go or how well she will accomplish her goal(s). (And to be honest, I am kinda MEH about the bad guy set up and the whole Fallen war thing). So jury's out.

I'd call this a 2.5 stars maybe? But I was definitely entertained and didn't put it down once I started. So that tells you something.

Wow. This book definitely surpassed my expectations!!!
Recently I feel like I've read so many books were the heroine comes from an abusive home life, and while I was starting to think that theme may be getting over done, Amanda Perry completely changed my mind.
Riley is an amazing character. Although her abuse is similar to many other characters in other books, Perry did a very good job in detailing/demonstrating her PTSD and healing in her new life with her father and stepfamily. In short, Riley is a mess. She has severe stuttering, flinches at most movement, and greatly fears anger in others, despite it not being directed at her. Riley's healing is slow and she has some setbacks making the process very believable. Although she is very quickly accepting of comfort from one particular individual, it is explained later in the book.
When I started this story, I didn't realize it was a supernatural story with gods and elementals (like witches who control elements). Also unlike many stories of this genre where the girl suddenly discovers magic powers and suddenly is thrust into the supernatural world, this book eases Riley into this new world. After months of adjusting to her new life and healing from past traumas, Riley is still greatly damaged, but getting better and beginning to feel really loved and cared for. It isn't until much later in the story that, after a nightmare, Riley accidentally discovers her abilities and her new family begins to explain and teach her.
I really loved this story. The characters are amazing. Riley is broken but healing. Her father, stepmother, stepbrother, and their family friends are so supportive and loving. They are quick to accept Riley into their family and do everything they can to help her recover from her traumatic past. With the introduction of elementals and some new villains at the end of the story, I am left eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. I hope its not too long of a wait!!

This book was fantastic. It was heart wrenching, soul hurting and then also sooo heartfelt and warming at the same time. I soooo ugly cried from the start to the finish. My heart was weeping tears for our FMC and all she went thru until she found her father and his family. Even then due to her past she was sooo slow to trusting and it was completely understandable and it is here that we get our hurt and torment and all starting to bed mended with the love these people who have never met her show. In a spectacular showing we find out what has been hidden by those monsters of her childhood. In the love and trust she starts to show her true self and finds love that she never knew. Both as family and romantic. Everything seems to be going great and all until we see that Riley (FMC) is the same as her father and family but alos different. It is these differences that those monsters from the past make their appearances again. Riley is such an intriguing character in her hidden strength we see parts of and i can not wait to see how she grows with the love surrounding her.

The plot and storyline were fantic and the flow of the book was impeccable. Every one of the main characters were soo well written. It almost felt like they were real. This book is sooo well written and i cant wait to see what is in store for this group of characters and see how Riley defeats one of those monsters from her past

Going in blind, I had no idea what to expect. This is my first book by this author. But to my surprise, I really liked this book.

I didn't think I'd like a heroine like Riley as I'm normally a fan of the kickass, snarky type of MC. But gosh, she really tugged at my heartstrings. And the way that Caleb is with her ---- awwww 😍I loved how sweet he was with her.

I can't wait to read what happens next!

This was a pretty emotional read - in a good way. The heroine, Riley has suffered horrible abuse her entire life and at the age of seventeen finds herself uprooted to live with a rich father she never knew (who didn't know about her) and the struggles she goes through to adapt to a real home with a caring family are heartbreaking. I appreciated very much that this struggle wasn't glossed over too much; that we got to see her struggle for a good portion of the book, and was moved by her new family's reactions to her struggles. The love interest, Caleb, is super sweet and protective and every girl dreaming of this kind of guy will adore him for it.

This story has simple writing and is a quick read; it reads very much like a contemporary YA but veers sharply into paranormal territory (in case that is not a genre you are interested in). It's not perfect by any means (there are a few errors and sentences or words that I thought could use some revision/tweaking) - but the feelings the story provoked in me overcame those things for me. If I remember correctly a previous book I read from this author produced similar feelings; it is clear this author writes with a lot of heart.

A good book.

Warning: This review has some very light spoilers to some particulars of the plot to this story.
It's always nerve racking for me to pick up a new series. Wondering if I have wasted money on book I ended up not enjoying. This is happily not the case for Hidden Embers, thankfully. I will definitely be picking up the next book in this series to read.
The only reason I rated this book a four instead of a five stars was, because of the stories input of soul mates and legend. It's not a personal dislike, or the like, in story plot lines; however, in this book it came off as unoriginal and boring for me. Understandably, this book is obviously a YA, and with the heroine's past it is an acceptable aspect of the story. In the author's defense I have to be in the right mood for that kind of plot, and I usually prefer a more mature, adult read.
That being said, I recommend this book to any other fellow book lovers searching for their next book. However, there a few parts in this story that do invovle descriptive scenes of child abuse, and if you abhor books like that than Hidden Embers might not be the book for you.

“You might think the flame is out. But all it takes is one tiny ember to light the world on fire.”

I absolutely adored this story and the characters in it. The connection that Riley started to establish with her new real family was a beautiful thing to behold, and her bond with Caleb even more so.
Also, I somehow missed the fact that it's supposed to be a paranormal story, so that was a surprise. When I read the name Samael and my brain jumped to the connection with the Fallen I did not actually expect to be right! Granted, it's not about angels, but still pretty cool. I really want to see where this is going.
So, Thank you, dear Amanda Perry, for another sleepless night. The writing was so compelling and I became so engrossed in the story, that by the time I finally surfaced (after I finished the book, of course) it was 4 a.m. But that's not the bad part, the bad part is where I start looking for the second book and realize that it's not out yet. How is that fair?

reread 2025: i never would have given this 4 stars today, but i rarley edit ratings . lots of spelling errors, plot holes, very YA (good or bad, you decide) and just very hurried.
despite my original review saying I wanted to see where the series goes, I have never even considered reading book two, but this is my fourth reread of book one?

A sweet story of learning to trust and to love. Rylie has been abused by her mother and stepfather and gets a new start with her father and his family. They do their best to help her and when she suddenly discovers she has elemental powers they introduce her to their secret world.

Will want to see how this series continues.

And another soulmate book for me! And that just say that it is definitely not a disappointment. In fact, it way surpassed my expectation. The book was so well done. The emotions of the characters and what they are going through are expressed so clearly. Really enjoyed it. Cannot wait for the sequel!

This book was amazing. This book follows the story of Riley a girl with electric violet-blue eyes. The story is told from her POV. Riley has a stutter and has been abused. She gets bad nightmares( actually memories). We first meet her in her way to southern California to live with her dad who she has never met before. Once there we met her dad Mark and his wife Leanne. I loved both of these character so much. When at her new home we meet her step brother Jaxon, his girlfriend Cassie, and her brother Caleb. Caleb become Riley’s love interest. I loved how there relationship progressed throughout the story. I actually loved how Riley’s relationship with all the characters progressed throughout. It wasn’t easy and was difficult at times but that’s what made it so real.
About halfway through the story Riley’s finds out her new family including herself is an elemental. Elemental is a person who can control one of the elements. Caleb is fire, her dad wind, Leanne and Jaxon are earth, and Cassie is water. Riley on the other hand is the chosen one which means she can control all elements. Elementals are good but there is also bad elementals called The Fallen. The Fallen are elementals gone bad and get there soul and powers taken. They also get powers in return. Riley’s step father is a fallen and is creating an army one Riley must stop. This is basically we’re the book ends. I can’t wait to continue Riley’s story and see where life takes her.
I recommend this book if you love a heart wrenching book. This book has lots of emotion, no steam and can be easily read in one sitting. It took my a full afternoon to finish this book. I can’t wait to read the next book and more by Amanda Perry. I can only hope it’s as good as this one.

I had sort of guessed from the synopsis, but this book was …bad. I can see young teens liking it though, but it was definitely not for me.

First, the insta love. The dreaded hated insta love was strong in this one. And I don’t mean only with the love interest Caleb, but also with the rest of the family. Everybody just loved Riley instantly which felt shallow. It would have been easier to feel something for the characters if their relationships grew organically.

Second, the tired cliché of the love interest being the most handsome man ever seen. Seriously, if the first introduction of the love interest is to describe him as unbelievably good looking that is a red flag. I have seen worse love interests than Caleb, at least he wasn’t overtly controlling or abusive (yes, the bar is that low). But the vast majority of his personality seemed to be his love for Riley, so you know, still disturbing.

Third, soulmates. Do I have to say more? I hate that trope so much, it’s just an excuse to hide the fact that the romance isn’t believable.

Fourth, the war against the Fallen, a group of Elementals who’ve turned to the dark side. When I read that part, I found myself thinking to myself Oh, no. No no no no. . But to no prevail, it happened, the book went there and there is no turning back.

Fifth, (do I really need to go on?) the Chosen one. Riley is not only a special snowflake she is The Chosen one. . How many clichés can fit in one book? Read this book to the end and I am sure you will find out.

I can’t do this anymore. I barely ever dnf books but I simply can’t finish this.

Okay the Insta love crap definitely didn't work for me and parts if this were downright corny. The part that bothered me the most was the conversation between the 17 year old main character and her boyfriend where they're discussing future babies and diapers. That's just not normal, I mean I get that none of their lifestyles is normal, but come on what seventeen year old wants to discuss their future marriage and children and growing old together. I'm 37 and I'D freak out if a guy I'd only known a couple months said that to me. I mean the whole conversation just about tops out the clingy psycho meter. I kind of want to run for the hills and I'm not the character he said that to.

I didn't hate the story, but there were more than a few parts that got to me, first there's the whole over done trope of the abused girl who has nothing thrown into the world of wealth and privilege. I mean seriously she goes from only ever having eaten ramen to having a 5k credit card allowance? The extremes detract from the story. Then there was the music discussion that was just distinctly uncomfortable to read because it felt like something racial rather than a simple discussion of music. I mean come on, they hate all rap and r&b except the Beastie Boys, which doesn't count? That part seriously bugged me. I know it sounds weird, but you have to read the scene.

It was an okay sorry I guess, but there were parts of this that just bothered me.

DNF

I was excited to read this one but it fell flat to me.

I started off really liking it. The main characters voice was different and I could relate to how she was unsure about herself. I could also relate to her not knowing what others thought and expected from her.

It was very believable especially with a background like the one she had. However, when I got past page 100 and there was very little character development I started to get bored, when I skimmed to the middle of the book and saw the MC was pretty much the same I started to get annoyed.

So I found myself doing something I pretty much never do. I went to the end of the book and read the last 2 chapters. I found I didn't really miss anything in the 100 pages or so I skipped. The MC was just as shy and unsure as before. The problem with this is that at first I get it, by the end of the book though she should have had some more development! She had a rough life but through the whole book I felt like she was a fragile and broken thing which needed coddling, her indecision and second guessing started to really rub me the right way and I wanted to yell at her to wake up and do at least one decision which was because she wanted to and not because she thought it would please her new family.

An example, she is....

There are not many books on Elementals, and this is the sole reason I gave this one a shot, and I... regret it?
It started as good, FL finally meeting her father at seventeen after her mother's death. She was abused, tortured, and had to go through so much that now she finds it hard to utter a coherent speech or bring herself to trust anyone. So, swoop in her dad, her stepmom, her stepbrother, his girlfriend, and the girlfriend's hot brother, Caleb, who, I might add, starts calling her babe or baby girl after talking to her for the fourth time. Despite her circumstances, she's oh so attracted towards Caleb and vice versa. She goes on shopping, eats burgers, and lives a pampered life for a while, with her nightmares tagging along when she finds out that there's more to this perfection. They're all Elementals, and so is she (like icing on a cake, she can control all four elements). On top of it, her attraction to Caleb is because of him being her 'THE ONE. This is where I lost ALL the interest.
.
I wouldn't say I liked the author's writing style. Too many unnecessary details, the plot is so darn slow, and on top of it, it's full of cliches. I don't do cliches. Some moments are cringy. I just finished it, hoping something was interesting later ahead, considering it's a trilogy but nope. Nothing can make me resume the story...

I've read this author's other work, Fostering Hope, from an anthology and I loved it so much that's why when I've seen this one's blurb, I didn't hesitate to grab it.

There will always be a special place in my heart that's reserved for this kind of read. The whole belonging-ness and acceptance going on in this book endeared me to it.

It's a no-brainer that a skittish little thing like Riley acts and reacts the way she does throughout the story. People have to be watchful around her, she's shy to the extent that it disabled her, and she misinterprets most of the attention/love being directed to her. Bottom line is, she will take time. And I definitely have lots of free time, literally, to be able to watch her grow herself some self-esteem and establish trust with the Sullivan-Montgomery family.

Caleb. You sweet thing. Riley deserves to have a gentle, patient and strong guy like Caleb. Can't wait for the next books!!!

This book is probably one of my favorites I loved how much the MC Riley grew in this story. Riley had a hard life of neglect and abuse from her mom and her stepdad and it all came to an end when her mom dies, and Riley is sent to live with a dad she has never meant. Riley not only gains a dad but also a stepmom and brother Jaxon as well as a friendship with her brother’s girlfriend Cassie and her brother Caleb who is also Riley’s brother’s best friend. Riley is thrown into a world of love and affection that she does not understand. At 1st she is skittish, and she stutters but throughout the story she becomes more confident. With the help of her new family Riley learns that she is not a normal human but an elemental and with the help of her family and her soulmate Caleb she learns the truth of who she is and what she is meant to do. I loved this story and I can’t wait to see what happens next and also see how Riley handles the relationship with her new family and soulmate.

I will read the sequel, BUT....

The premise of the story is interesting, and I liked the main characters for the most part. My main complaint is that the heroine is so innocent as to be dense. Why is everyone so sad after I tell them (yet another) miserable sad story? Duh. Why did the bad man lie to me? Duh. And so on. It is great to have an innocent, vulnerable character, but don't cross the line to clueless and pathetic. Still, there were some genuinely interesting parts, some signs of humor and some real promise. I want to read the sequel. I just need to see the heroine grow a lot more and quit the stuttering, sad stories and general dampness. A little of that is understandable, but excessive makes her a caricature of a hand wringing Victorian wilting violet. I know writing is hard, and getting all the right components in the first in a series is difficult. There is definitely enough in this story for me to make it worth continuing on to see what happens.

This book is pretty damn good. But it also made me really really sad and there were times when I just had to put it down and cry. And not just cry but have an ugly sob. The horror that Riley has been through (minus the supernatural stuff) it ripped my heart open and made me remember my own history. And her skittish around others? Completely believable and realistic. Because i have also been there. It did send me back to an unhappy past but that is because Riley's character was very well written.

The elemental side of things has got me very interested and i look forward to more in this series. And i love Riley's new family. They are perfect for her. And Caleb is a great partner for her. Just please no more awful things happening to her. Or implying even worse abuse in her past.. I dont know if i could bear that.

This was a cute little story about a girl from an abusive upbringing discovering not only what it means to be part of a loving family but also what it is like to have powers. The MC shows a good bit of opening up through out the book as she begins to learn that not all people are bad. It was interesting to see how her brain processed different situations that were not as nefarious as her brain led her to believe due to her prior abuse. I did think the relationship between her and Caleb was a bit rushed, but then for me I like to build up leading towards the relationship, still it didn't deter from the main story. It will be interesting to see how the MC handles herself with the knowledge she learned about her powers and where her path will go from here on.

❤️🌼HIDDEN EMBERS......AMANDA PERRY.....A GOOD BOOK❤️🌼
HIDDEN EMBERS was recommended to me by a good friend, and it’s the first book I’ve read by this relatively new author....It’s also different from the books I normally read...However, it is a good book, and I am glad I read it...Even though it is not from my genre of choice, I didn’t really realize this until I was half way through the book and already sucked into the story.... I love the characters, and I love the way this family comes together to love and support a daughter the father never knew about....I’m ready for book 2, and at the end of the day, I think that’s all for which authors and readers can hope...I recommend this book for a wide range of ages...❤️🌼

This was a really interesting book.

It did take a little while to get into the paranormal side of things, but it really delved into Riley's horrible childhood and background, the type of person she is, and forming the essential relationships with her new-found family and friends.
I have to admit that while the stuttering at first helped to understand just how abused and neglected Riley had been, it did get a little annoying after a while and perhaps could have just 'said' she stuttered. But that's just me.
Really liked all the main characters and how patient and understanding they are with Riley. Looking forward to more of this series and seeing how things progress with Riley and her growing powers.

I bought all three parts of this series that was published so far and read it as a boxset.

Did I enjoy it ? Yes..

Should you start reading this series? ONLY IF 1) YOU DONT MIND CLIFFHANGERS or
2) AUTHOR HAS FINISHED THE ENTIRE SERIES
3) YOU JUST WANTED SOMETHING TO PASS TIME BUT REALLY DONT NEED A CLOSURE

Did I get my closure inspite of reading the three books ? No...

Stretching a book to three is criminal but beyond that is atrocious !! Am I in pins and needles to know what happens next yes.. but Will I buy one more book to see how it goes NO. Why because I had reached my limit of it being stretched. Everything else I really liked about it. It was sweet and romantic. Good flow too.

The parents exist in this story! Which makes me so happy. They exist, they are lovey dovey and absolutely adorable, and they care. They actually take part in the story. This was so refreshing. I really enjoyed this story, learning about the MC and everything she has to go through. Definitely information overload for her, but she faced everything like a champ despite her past. Amanda did a great job of introducing the characters. The main character and her new family are all loving with their own little twists to their personalities, but nothing over the top. The support though is beautiful. It's a refreshing story and I can't wait to learn more about them in the next book.

Ermm. DNF halfway.
What kind of book is this?

I just...Ok here's the thing. I think the writing could be better. I understand the stuttering part even though it's annoying to read. Somehow, I felt the author tried so hard to make every scenes so dramatic.

The genre says Fantasy Paranormal but halfway through the book I still can't find the fantasy element so I skipped towards the end and yup there's the paranormal thing. It's really really really weird cause the beginning & middle felt like YA Contemporary with trauma & family issues. My guess is the author purposely intended to make the pacing of storyline slow?

A heart-rending opening novel that eloquently places the characters, settings and lore of an interesting new world.
Amanda Perry's Chosen Storm books delve into emotional wells from the first page, oozing the tale of a (sometimes painfully) stuttering MC Riley Storm and the new, emotionally-supportive world she is thrown into. While not quite hitting top marks for humour, the depth of the emotive writing deserves attention and acknowledgement.
I am eagerly awaiting for the next instalment in Riley's story.

I really liked this book. The story line was interesting and the characters pretty awesome. Riley comes from a terrible home living with her mom and step-dad to live with her bio father after an accident. Life with her father is a total opposite from what she came from, with more love and affection than she's had her entire life. The poor kid gets hit with surprise after surprise in what I imagine was a very overwhelming 2 days. This is the second book by Amanda Perry I have been lucky enough to read and I am excited for more.
