You know what I absolutely HATE, DESPISE, and LOATHE with the strength, power, and destruction of a thousand suns?? When I’m excited to start reading a new book, then IMMEDIATELY in the very first chapter of said book, I’m confronted with reading through the male lead character engaging in a THOROUGHLY DETAILED sex scene with a woman who is not the lead female character. And I will stress again that the details were NOT spared. At all.
That is like an automatic 1-star for me. But wait! To top it off, here’s the hook-up deets.
Cue Chapter 1 opening scene: Steven is sitting in a bar with his best friend. From his inner mono, it is clear that he is on the pussy prowl. At this point, I am already rolling my eyes, because I know where this is going. Shortly thereafter, he is approached by the girl of the night. But get this: Steven and this woman do not even exchange first names. Instead they retreat to the women’s restroom for their hook-up. And when the deed takes place, NO PROTECTION IS USED. No protection is even mentioned! These two are complete and total strangers who meet (using that term loosely) in a club. Steven is clearly a manwhore, and the author makes it a point to let readers know that the woman is not wearing panties. So she also likes her anonymous sexy times.
Needless to say, this first chapter made me feel like I needed to take a scalding, hot, cleansing…
Not to mention I felt an uncontrollably glaring urge to…
Then later, when Allie has sex with Steven UNPROTECTED, I can do nothing but sit back and…
My hero-hate of an immature, douchebag, double-standard, emotionally stunted, manwhore male lead is what ultimately made this one a reading fail for me.
Yeah saying that I hate reading a sex scene between OW and hero is a gross understatement, add to them not using a condom, with either the OW or heroine....
This story was weak and a waste of my precious reading time. The only reason I didn't stop reading is because it was short - shorter still because I heavily skimmed.
The story sounded like it had potential, but things happened too quickly, I didn't care for either of the characters and I didn't feel their chemistry. I was also put off by the opening chapter of the book, which was the H having UNPROTECTED sex with some random in a busy womans bathroom at a bar/nightclub (I forget which). It was just gross.
Steven and Allie have been friends for years but neither will admit to the other that they have feelings for them. One night Steven stumbles across Allie's diary and even though he knows he shouldn't he reads it. Stunned by Allie's words Steven decides he wants to make all her fantasies come true. So he sends her a text which both shocks and rocks her world. Allie never thought that she would be anything more than a friend to Steven so when he sends her two text and the last one is of her diary she starts to get embarrassed and then scared. Because Allie has a secret that she never told Steven and it could very well end their friendship. That secret is in the very diary Steven has in his possession. Can Allie tell her secret before he finds out about it. Can they be more than friends?
This is a book about two best friends that are afraid to admit their feelings in case they ruin a long standing friendship. The commentary between Steven and Allie will have you turning the pahges to find out more. The chemistry is explosively hot. I could stop reading until I was at the end. If you aren't a fan of Amy Brent's before you read this you definietely will be by the end.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. I enjoyed it so much I bought my own copy.
Amy Brent has really delivered with Friends with Benefits where we read about Allie and Steven who have been friends a long time. Allie has always had feelings for Steven but he never felt that way about her so being his friend was enough until one evening when he stole her diary. What starts out as fun soon starts to get serious but Allie is hiding a ten year old secret that once she tells Steven she knows he will never forgive her. This story shows how two best friends who know each other well but still don’t know everything about each other. This story is full of emotions from love, happiness, sex and anger I couldn’t put the. Ok down once I started it. I always enjoy reading any book Amy Brent writes.
Friends with Benefits is a steamy friends to lovers romance. This is a well written book that has a very entertaining plot. My big problem with the book was Steven. I do not want to give anything away but to me he was insufferable and acted like a spoiled brat with his unrealistic expectations and holier than thou attitude. In the end I just could not understand why Allie would even want to be with him. That is just my opinion and other than that I enjoyed the story but Allie deserved better. I'm posting an honest, voluntary review after reading an advance copy of this book.
Allie & Steven have been friends since high school. Allie has been in love with Steven since she met him. Allie never wanted to risk the friendship by telling Steven about her feelings, especially because she did not think they would be returned.
Steven has thought about Allie in a sexual way for awhile but he is not a relationship guy. But when he comes across Allie's diary and cannot help himself to know what is inside he finds out her fantasies and dreams star him as the main character. Now he wants her even more.
They take their friendship to the next level with friends with benefits but Allie knows she cannot go back to just being friends. Steven is not sure about commitment since his failed college relationship where his heart was crushed. But the biggest hurdle will be a secret that Allie has kept from Steven for 10 years. Can Steven get over Allie's secret that happened at 16?
Steven's character is an idiot to be honest. He should have seen that Allie is in love with him. Plus being the playboy he is he could have made a move on Allie forever ago. Also, something that happened 10 years ago and is Allie's worst regret, her not telling her best friend makes sense. You keep that crap to yourself. I think it was right for Steven to know just because of those who do know and are involved but Steven holding it against Allie is ridiculous. Allie is sweet and the only problem I have with her character is never quitting her job with James. James is a pervert and a bad boss. Allie should have told Steven long ago about her feelings but the risk of losing their friendship is hard to overcome.
Melissa is a good sister and gave good advice on the matter. Adam is Steven's brother and I like his no sugar coating attitude. Adam tells it like it is.
I also am very disappointed with the author and the lack of condoms being used in this book. I mean Steven is basically a man whore which is totally ok but use a freaking condom. And the fact that Allie knows he is a player she should have made him wear a condom at least until they were more than friends with benefits and he was tested for STDs I mean seriously. Maybe I'm overly cautious but NO THANK YOU.
This book was mostly sex (a lot of sex scenes) and lacked substance.
An amazing steamy Friends to Lovers story. This was an amazing romance. I fell in love with the friends to lovers relationship of Steven and Allie - the sexual chemistry between them was over the top steamy and hot! But I do have to say I wanted to slap Steven more than once throughout the story, but still I loved him with Allie. A must read that you will enjoy. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
A Secret Revealed! Steven and Allie have been best friends most of their lives. What he doesn't know though, is that she's been in love with him virtually all that time. She also has a secret that she knows he would never forgive her for so in over ten years she has never told him - only wrote it in her diary!!!! She helped him when his heart was broken in college and they have got such a close bond that they see and speak to each other several times a week going to each other's apartments and she is known and loved by his family too. Since his heart was broken he has been a player and just uses women for sex and he makes sure that the women enjoy it too. But one movie night he is at her home when he spots a yellow book and, intrigued, he picks it up, looks inside and sees that it's her diary and to KEEP OUT!!! He hastily puts it back but knows that he NEEDS to discover what she has written inside it. The next day he can't stop thinking about what Allie is keeping secret - surely he knows everything about her, doesn't he? The next day he invites himself round and she asks what's wrong as he's being weird. He keeps noticing how she's dressed and snatching glimpses of bare skin. He pretends that he's going to the loo and takes the diary in with him. He begins reading and he is astonished as in her own handwriting she says repeatedly how much she wants him!! he hides it in his shirt and makes an excuse to leave. As soon as he's home he begins reading and it blows his mind. he's always known how attractive she was and has been tempted to breach the friend zone but he hasn't wanted to lose her friendship which he prizes and can't bear to lose. But the next day, when she's at work, Allie receives a message form him and its of his manly 'package'. She knows it's his as re recognises his watch! She's embarrassed and horny so she texts him back saying you've sent this to the wrong person. Then his reply reveals all to her. How will Allie feel about Steven having her diary? What is going to happen to them? Is Steven wanting a friends with benefits relationship with her ? What will happen when he finds out her only other secret that happened 10 years ago? Amy Brent has surpassed herself with this novel. Admittedly at first, I just thought that Steven was an arrogant womanising jerk but he isn't. He's scared to have his heart broken as we all are. He certainly has chemistry with Allie in abundance but is it enough? Will they start to have a relationship of that kind as normally he never sees a woman more than once? Will he put their friendship in jeopardy for great sex?Amy really knows how to write passionate and sensuous love scenes and this is her at her very best. I loved Allie's sister, Andrew and Chance and would love to read Chance's HEA [hint please?]. Such wonderful, well developed characters and I loved 'hearing' both Steven and Allie's POV as it gave such an added depth to the story. A great storyline that captured my attention at the beginning and maintained it to the epilogue which is so very good. That epilogue really rounded off the story to make it as much as any story can be perfect. This is most assuredly my favourite book by Amy. I've started on the first of the two bonus books that have been included[and which have never been published before] and it's looking very promising!!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
However, I have bought my own copy and it's a fantastic addition to my ebook library that I'm sure to re-read as it's so entertaining!!
I like this book. I really enjoyed the plot of the story. Allie and Steven have been bestfriends since they were kids, not realizing how perfect they would be if they crossed the line and added some benefits to their friendship. Steven is this very attractive womanizer but despite his history with the ladies, he actually has a big heart and is just scared of getting it broken. Allie on the other hand has always been very attracted to her bestfriend. She has always hid her true feeling from him because she feared rejection and didnt want to lose him in any kind of way. So when they finally took the next step and became intimate, they realized instantly that they have an amazing connection and they should have tested these waters way sooner then they did. But Allies past surfaces and causes Steven to freak out and wounder if he made a mistake getting involved with her in the first place. He really cares for her but the betrayal is too much for him to handle. This is the first time I have read an Amy Brent book and it was good. I mean of course it was a little bit more of a fast pase story which was fine, I only would have hoped for more of a dilemma on top of the issues they came across. I do however like that Steven's character was the one that was conflicted about Allie. I felt like the roll reverse was nice for a change. Because usually in books its the female that experiences the betrayal, trust issues, heart ache, deception, and has a more difficult time moving past certain issues rather then the male character. So to read a story where is shows the opposite was probably my favourite part of the book. But over all I will most definitely check out more of her stories.
I was privileged to receive this book as an advanced copy & am choosing to review it voluntarily and this is my honest review..Amy Brent has done it again she continuously writes such quality pieces of work This book grabs your attention quickly and holds you right throughout the book.It has elements of a great story I thoroughly love this book!! I was hooked from page one .
Not at all what I expected. It seemed as though everyone in the romance book community was raving about "Friends with Benefits" but I was skeptical. I just expected a shallow storyline with sex as the focus. Well, the sex was definitely a focal point! I truly enjoyed the erotic scenes (although they could be slightly repetitive, still quite enjoyable) but the novel was so much more than that. It tells a truly unique story but one that can also hit a nerve with many people I think. Growing up with a best friend of the opposite sex, the eventuality of sleeping together is almost a sure thing. But it ruins so many deep friendships. The relationships that survive and thrive can be beautiful. This is a beautiful story. I highly recommend it.
Extremely entertaining, captivating, and interesting read. I could not put it down. Wonderfully written with strong characters. I want to read more from this author. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
In this book Allie and Steven have been best friends forever. Classic tale of girl wants best friend to look at her the way he does every stranger. When Steven comes across her diary he realizes the sexual fantasies that he has dreamt about, she has them too. When he decides to find out if they are true or not, he is surprised by how amazing it is. That is till a dark secret surfaces and he doesn't know if he can forgive her.
The book started out wonderful and let me tell you it is a dirty book. ;) Who doesn't like to read a good hot dirty book? Me, Me, Me!! Well then I got mad at Steven and him kind of being a complete dick. No spoilers. Then towards the end I felt as if the book fell a little flat. Don't get me wrong it is a good read. Especially if you are in the mood for something hot. But I have to say that this is not my favorite by Amy. But hey don't take my word for it try it yourself. You may love, where I only like it.
Steven, your predictable young hot ‘player’, a commitment-phobe, can be as annoying as h€ll and who goes through women like water, all because he had his heart broken in college leaving his BFF to pick up the pieces!
Allie, the BFF, has been in love with Steven for 8yrs, since her high school freshman year, pouring her feelings and fantasies of Steven out into her diary, but they’ve never been more than friends, until Steven finds and reads her diary!
Having had feelings for Allie but not wanting to cross that line, once he reads her diary, all bets are off and one saucy text message from him to Allie, sends their relationship to boiling hot!
The sexual chemistry between them was hot and heavy and Allie finally having ‘got her man’ has only one fear... that Steven will find out her one secret that could tear them apart!
What happens when Allie’s secret comes out? Can Steven accept it was in her past, live with it and move on?

3.5 stars. What can I say? I’m always going to be a sucker for these types of books. It was a good book about Allie and Stevens blossoming relationship, going from friends to friends with benefits. It was much longer than these books tend to be, which I would love but a lot of that time I literally wanted to punch Steven and have Allie just be done with him, ha. I felt he was being unfair (yes, he have the right to be angry, still) especially when he kept taking her back yet, still manipulated and essentially used her and pushed her away time and time again. Besides that I still enjoyed it, and enjoyed the type relationship they had when it’s good, even when it’s hard.. just to an extent.
Amy Brent has done it again! A hot, steamy read that will put you on a rollercoaster of emotions. Allie has wanted Steven for years, but doesn't want to mess up their friendship. Steven has been feeling the same way, but when he can't resist taking her diary, he turns up the heat. When Allie tells Steven about a secret she has kept for 10 years, will it kill any chances of them get together? This book is an attention grabber and keeps you coming back for more. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. OMG! What a hot and sexy read about two close friends who agree to become more once Steven reads Allie's diary where in it Allie has written that she has always had a crush on him. Once Steven sees this his feelings begin to change shortly after they start an intense physical relationship. This couple had so much chemistry. Can they still be as close as they have always bee? Especially when Steven learns of a secret Allie has kept for years and fells she needs to let him know if at the risk of their friendship. This story is full of hope, friendship, love and even a bit of heartache for Allie. I loved reading this wonderful book from Ms Brent. I am never disappointed by any books by Ms Brent. I really enjoyed the wonderful HEA!
I received this book with the understanding that I could leave a voluntary and honest review.
In this book we meet Steven and Allie. What do you do when your friend finds out your biggest secret will it draw you closer or will it drive a wedge between you? This is the question for Steven and Allie when. They each find out something they never knew about their friend. This leads to the question when is a secret so big that it can destroy a friendship?
This is an amazing book. It will have you hooked from the first word to the very end. There is so much I want to tell you about this book but don't want to ruin it for any other readers. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
Steven and Allie have been friends ’forever’. It seems that both of them likes the other one a little bit more than as a friend but none of them dates to act on it. Their connection is steamy when they becomes friends with benifits. Steven finds out a big secret when he reads Allie’s diary. I got annoyed after a while of they way Steven acted after he found out about the secret. I wanted to scream at him to just deal with it - it’s history and nothing you can do about it. I felt like the book was a little bit to long. It would have benefited of being shorter, a bit tighter. At the end Steven got back to his senses again. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Allie and Steven are friends until one night he reads her diary and finds out a secret, she wants him. Steven what Allie as well, they decide to become friends with benefits, will it be enough? What will happen when Steven learns more of Allie’s secrets. This is a fast paced read with plenty of drama and suspense. I liked the characters; the chemistry is steamy and the story held my interest throughout. A good read.
I loved the idea of this book; best friends becoming friends with benefits and the secret that could be relationship damaging. However, this book didn’t go the way I expected and I was bummed out. Steven acted like a big baby about Allie’s secret throughout the book and Allie just took everything Steven did to her because she thought she deserved it. I could understand his feeling of betrayal, but come on you were busy banging other girls when this happened, you really didn’t have a horse in the race, as my dad likes to say.
I really wanted Allie to give Steven a big wake up call about his actions and attitude but alas that did not happen. I guess I wanted more feeling because this book is basically 95% hot steamy sex between them.
Just a personal opinion: not a fan of Steven having unprotected sex with a random girl in a bar bathroom then having unprotected sex with Allie a few days later. Gross to me that’s all I’m saying.
I loved Steven & Allie's story...can't get enough of them. I love these kind of stories...wow. I'm voluntarily leaving a review for a copy of the book.
WOW!! This book started off great until Steven became a jerk.
I usually love friends with benefits stories, but I just couldn't handle the back and forth with Steven's temper and insecurities.
Steven, playboy, afraid of commitment, never sleeps with the same girl twice. Allie has been his best friend since high school. She knows how his is/what he does with woman and has never judged him.
When he steals her diary and reads it at home one night after watching a movie together at her apartment, things change. Allie is humiliated because that diary has over 10 years of fantasies she wishes would happen with Steven; and she wrote her biggest mistake in there that she wants to take to the grave with her. Steven will never forgive her or his older brother Andrew because of it, even though she was only 16. So with the promise of no more reading, he returns her diary.
She's been in love with him for years, but she knows it's not mutual. So she remains his best friend who is also there when he needs her.
Steven has had feelings for Allie for years, but he knows that he's not good enough for her. So he sleeps around with anything that walks and moves on the following day. He knows that his Allie isn't like any of the girls that end up in his bed; they have a priceless friendship that involves dinner's and movie/popcorn nights.
When Allie's sister, Melissa, reminds Allie that things won't end well hiding such a big secret; she reluctantly agrees. After finding out, Steven walks away from both Allie and his brother, Andrew for betraying him. Allie falls apart for the 3 months that they don't speak. Steven fairs no better, being that they told each other that they loved each other right before their break up.
The one thing I truly hated was how quickly Allie forgave him after all that turmoil. It happened 10 years ago, they were friends, but she was a blip to him, which was why she went to his brother to lose her virginity. Ugh!! Yet she suffered 3+ months because he couldn't get his head together. I would have started dating other men and moved on if I were her.
This story was a jawn and goes on and on... I skipped a lot but read to the end.
I expected a deep friendship with respect from both sides. But that was not the case.
The biggest disappointment is Allie. She had no backbone at all and that is a no go for me. Only being friends with Steven because she is crazy for him: "She was thankful to at least be his friend".... But after he reads her diary! he sends her a dickpic! and makes a move on her. There is not much talking between the friends about the diary Incident. There isn't a lot of talking leading up to or during the sexscenes, because he is a de god in the bedroom and that is al that is relevant.... After their hookup he decides she needs to live with him and she moves in. But after discovering she had a one time hook up with his brother 11 years ago, he doesn't trust her and becomes paranoid. After that he is a compete dick and she is nothing but a accessory for him and walking on eggshells the whole time.... So disappointing - and at this point you wonder for the second time wether or not to finish the story. You would think the manwhore is lucky to find someone he has feelings for....
Steven is a women Magnet and totally irresistible. Not uncommon. But -as in a lot of these books- has a brain 2....and is not totally superficial.....otherwise there would be no story to read....He is self absorbed, successful and rich. It's not clear why he kills the friendship for sex. But it happens.
He lives with a dubble standard and has no problem with it. Also a no go for me. Manwhores with a dubble standard need a doma to teach them what's right.
What was missing in this story was the humor of it all. It was was to serious and dramatic.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I want to say that I really wanted to love and enjoy this book. But there was something about this book that I just couldn't get into.
Allie has been in love with Steven for years. But they are best friends and she chooses to let that be first and foremost in their relationship. But that doesn't mean she can't have steamy dreams and fantasies about him. So when she does she like most women write hers down in her diary.
Steven has thought about Allie in a romantic way before but never really thought it would go anywhere. But when he sees Allie's diary he decides to put years of friendship aside and takes her diary home and reads it. And now that he knows Allie wants him as much as he wants her, all bets are off.
So I get the friendship turning into a sex thing. But I guess what bothered me about this book is 1. Steven had no problem taking something from Allie and then using it against her 2. He continued to do this over and over again. 3. Allie seemed to not have any problem having sex with him no matter how many times he hurt her. 4. These two for all of their "friendship" hurt each other ALOT but their clothes were off more.
I am sorry but I seemed to skip a lot of this book because of that last reason. I won't give the reason away on what Steven and Allie's problems were, but man there seemed to be quite a few. But no matter how many there were, they seemed to screw their way through them.
Altogether the beginning of the book was pretty good. But when Steven wouldn't get over Allie's first confection and it just kept going on. I was over it. I voluntarily read an advance reader copy for my honest review.
I want to start by saying that I really enjoyed the heart of Allie and Steven’s story. The reason I gave 4 stars was because I felt there were too many sex scenes. I know this may be the unpopular opinion, and don’t get me wrong I think this author writes them well, it just seemed every couple pages, it was another steamy scene (together or by themselves). It just seemed a bit much to me but like I said before, it’s probably the unpopular opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy steamy scenes and for me, the steamier the better 😜 but I just wanted more of Steven and Allie’s friendship/relationship (because i love the best friends dynamic) than just straight up sex. I still did really enjoy the story of being best friends for years and never wanting to admit that mutual feelings were there between them. I really enjoyed the way Steven found out about Allie’s crush but he didn’t exactly handle it right. Part of that, I felt, was him scared of what he truly felt for Allie and how it could change their friendship. This is still a book that I would say is a must read because the author truly is an amazing writer! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I didn’t like the book as much as I hoped I would. Yes, the sex scenes were pretty hot, but the character Steven was a total turn off. His indiscretion in the beginning was kind of blown off (his reading her diary), but her secret that she kept from him from since they were teenagers, she was continually being punished for by him. I could understand Steven initially being hurt by Allie’s revelation, because they were best friends and he found out that she couldn’t bring herself to tell him, but to be an upset as he was and to continually use it to hurt her was just annoying. He’d say he was over it, but then he wasn’t and was a jerk to her, they try and work it out, then he’s a jerk to her again. She kept going back to him whenever he wanted to try again. I wanted to scream at her and tell her to MOVE ON that they just weren’t meant to be and she deserved someone way better than him. The story was longer than it should have been. Would have been better without all of the yo-yoing of their relationship.
On a side note...I did rather enjoy the bonus book "Star Struck" that was included.
