Flight attendant, Kendell McDonald, is really frustrated when her plane gets stuck in London and she can’t get a flight back home any time soon. After striking up a conversation with a wealthy passenger, Kendell decides to spend her layover at the theater with her new friend, Pauline. Her boyfriend back home isn’t happy, but Kendell wants an adventure and this is her one chance to have it.

As they watch the play, they are shocked when the lead actor is murdered on stage and Pauline becomes one of the main suspects. Kendall is determined to clear Pauline’s name.

This is the first book in the Flight Risk Cozy Mystery series and I really enjoyed it. It is a short, quick read. The story moves at a nice pace. The characters are a lively group that keeps your attention to the very end. I was quite surprised at how the story wrapped up. I wasn’t expecting that ending. I definitely want to continue reading this series.

This book is the first in what potentially is a good plot idea, a young flight attendant (Kendell) and a retired lady on a world trip (Pauline) get stuck in London and decide to do some sightseeing together.

Unfortunately for me however, there were just too many things which stretch the bounds of believablity, I do realise that a certain suspension of disbelief is required with nearly all 'cosy' mysteries, but this book stretches credibility way beyond its breaking point. For example Pauline is accompanied by her small dog, Dot, but we are supposed to believe that she had somehow managed to get this dog onto an intercontinental flight in her carry on bag, in these days of not even being able to get a bottle of water on to a flight, this is just impossible.

The 'mystery' part of this book refers to Kendell and Pauline attending a performance of Macbeth at the Globe theatre, which results in Pauline being a suspect in the murder and decapitation of the lead actor. I was quite annoyed with the way that the actors are portrayed as a rather unprofessional bunch, when in actual fact performances at the Globe are staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company who are world renowned.

It was equally improbable that the Metropolitan police (again one of the best police forces in the world) would miss an obvious piece of evidence, but miraculously it is spotted by our pair in about 5 minutes flat.

So sorry, the characters are good, but just about everything else is too silly for words, unless the writing improves, I won't be reading any more of this series.

I did receive a complimentary ARC of this book.

Piacevole e veloce lettura, sono soltanto un pochino sconcertata dal fatto che due perfette sconosciute decidano di fare una vacanza insieme. E poi la protagonista prende alcune decisioni avventate per investigare un omicidio.

Kendell and Pauline get stuck in London. They decide to go to the theater to see the play Macbeth. Some how the actor playing Macbeth is killed and Kendell and Pauling are suspects in a murder investigation. Can they find the true murderer and clear their names before the next plane takes off? You will need to read the book to find out. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Murder at Macbeth by Susan Harper is about Kendell a flight attendant whose homeward bound flight is cancelled due to mechanical trouble. She meets a feisty elderly woman, Pauline and Pauline’s spoiled pooch Dot. Pauline is taking an around the world trip and invites Kendell along. Kendell has 5 weeks of banked vacation that she needs to use so she’s game and becomes Pauline’s traveling companion. While seeing William Shakespeare’s Macbeth at the globe theater the lead actor is murdered and the police have informed Pauline she is a person of interest and cannot leave the country until the case is resolved. Kendell decides to do some sleuthing to help Pauline so Pauline’s travel plans don’t get completely fouled up. With Paulines antics this was a fun cozy mystery.

Review:

Murder at Macbeth is the first book in the Flight Risk Cozy Mystery series by Susan Harper. This is my inaugural read by author Susan Harper. I anticipate this will not be the last book I read by this author.

We begin the story with flight attendant Kendell being stranded in London. Kendell offers to help an elderly passenger, Pauline (and her dog Dot), get situated in London. As Kendall has an over abundance of accumulated vacation time, she decides to take a few days off as a result of this unexpected delay in London. Pauline plans to go see MacBeth at the Globe Theatre – mostly to see the theatre and mentions this to Kendell, whom also hoped to go to the play. So off they go. But what happens at the theatre is far from a normal, relaxed evening at the theatre. I must say, I did find it a bit far-fetched that the theatre would allow Pauline to bring her dog in, but then again, if the dog is quiet and hiding in her purse – who is to know?

So of course, during the final act, Macduff comes on stage with Macbeth’s head…only this time it is the real thing (a real, blood, severed head) and not a prop! And of course, Pauline had wandered off to the washroom (and then backstage for some reason) so that when Kendell caught up with Pauline, she was being escorted by the police out to be take downtown for questioning.

Many times Pauline reminded me of a cantankerous, yet lovable old woman. Some of the words that came out of her mouth…. Pauline took no guff from anyone.

” Kendell smirked. She could not figure it out, but there was just something about this sweet old woman that she liked. She was funny and had this ‘I really don’t care what you think’ attitude Kendell admired.”

In order to clear Pauline, Kendell and Pauline begin to sleuth on their own, in the hopes of figuring out who the real killer is. Some hilarious moments ensue. All in all, a ‘whodunit’ that is not solved until the end – just the way I like it.

I enjoyed the scene where Kendell walked right into the morgue – what gall this gal has:

“Once inside the morgue, she did her best to remain unnoticed by staff. Being a stunning redhead automatically made her stand out in the States, but wit the good old Celtic countries of Scotland and Ireland being right there, redheads were not as much of an oddity around these parts…. She managed to slip down a hallway that required a key code by stepping in behind a man in a lab uniform. By simply acting like she knew where she was going, keeping her head upright and walking with purpose, no one bothered stopping her.”

When all is said and done and Pauline is cleared and the actual killer is brought to justice, the possibility of further adventures for Kendell and Pauline (and Dot) just seemed so natural. Not sure how that will play out with Kendell’s boyfriend, Jack. Time will tell.

Murder at Macbeth is a thoroughly entertaining cozy mystery. The cover art was definitely one factor that drew me to this book – it caught my eye. But what kept me interested in reading this book was the characters and writing of Susan Harper. I will most assuredly be looking for more titles by this author.

I know I swore I'd stop reading books about the travel people, but I can't help myself. This one seems to be written as a romp, vague suggestions of things so the characters or the plot can head in a certain direction. A janitor 'promoted' to TSA? Airlines nor airports hire TSA. A small airport outside London? Have you ever been to the three London Airports? nothing small about any and customs would never have missed that dog, animals require quarantine. Instant turnaround for stews? The unions would have a fit. Stews never leave an airport? Get real. All this and much more like the speech patterns of the police, Officer Bobby indeed, and the waitress, and groaning about food costs while never mentioning currency conversion. Mystery okay and writing pretty smooth.

The Flight Risk Cozy Mystery Series is a funny, entertaining series with a couple of interesting main characters: Pauline and Kendell. Pauline is a feisty, older woman from Georgia, USA, and her sidekick is a confident, young woman from NY. Add a pocket pup that barks at the wrong times and you get entertaining stories to read on their journey around the globe. P.S.: Pauline isn't senile, she's quaint and smart. 4 stars

Murder at Macbeth #1 - Funny, entertaining. I had stopped reading Ms. Harper for a few months and wanted to try this series. I enjoyed this book, the storyline and certainly the characters: Pauline and Kendell. There's a little bit of everything in this story, including a nod to Jackie Chan. While the morgue scene was a bit unrealistic, it still worked, and the rest of the story is entertaining. The Bobbies take a bit of beating with their lack of investigating. 4 stars

A Killing in Kenya #2 - The story picks up on the plane ride from London to Kenya. This story is funnier and has more adventures than Murder at Macbeth. Added to the mix is flight attendant friend Liv and many fun animals. Well written with interesting dialog and an intriguing plot, along with plenty of humor and adventure. It was interesting to read about game reserves and legal hunting of endangered animals; whether this is true or not, it makes sense. Entertaining and quick to read. My favorite of the first four in the series. The next stop: Hawaii. 4 stars

Homicide in Hawaii #3 - The story starts as the plane takes off from Nairobi, Kenya. I don't care too much reading books set in HA, but this one is OK. Not as fast paced as the first two books, it was still interesting and quick to read. The main characters are getting better rounded, the dialog is still realistic and no stupid formula. The trio is joined by another flight attendant Brandon. Included are previews for a couple of books. The next stop: Peru via Texas. 3 stars

Trouble in Texas #4 - This story starts as the plane takes off from Hawaii on the way to Peru with a stop in Texas. Storms and a tornado keep the trio near Dallas. This book isn't my favorite, a lot of things felt off. While slow moving, the story was interesting while some of the dialog and actions were off. Kinda halfhearted stereotyping, which that's been done in the other books but those felt honest and playful (not meant to insult - just tease). With old school/native Texans, there's no wearing hats or work gloves in the house, so when one of these articles was continuously worn without comment by others, that was unreal. The next stop: Mississippi. 3 stars

A new can't miss cozy mystery series of two feisty women set apart by years who are a hoot together in their adventure!

This is a new series for Susan Harper and it is fantastic! I love her Senoia Cozy mysteries and not this! Can't wait for Book 2! Kendell is a flight attendant who meets a very likeable, feisty, opinionated grandmother, Pauline and her tiny dog,Dot, just before they disembark. The grandma explains she is on a trip around the world she and her husband had saved up for, but he died too soon and she is going anyway. She offers advice to Kendell about living life and getting out there and then they leave the plane. Kendell is waiting for her flight home and finds she is now stuck in an involuntary layover since all flights out are booked solid. Well it is London and she doesn't know what to do so she decides to try and find a hotel and take a few days since she always wanted to see a play at the Globe theater. As fate has it, she runs into Pauline who has a suite in a hotel and offers Kendell a place to stay. She agrees after some coaxing by Pauline and since Pauline wanted to go to the Globe theater, they get tickets together and then the adventure begins! There is a murder during the last scene in Macbeth and since Pauline went for a bathroom break just before that and was found backstage when the murder happened, crazy as it seems, she becomes a suspect. Anxious to help clear Pauline's name so she can continue on her journey, Kendell gets involved in the mystery with Pauline! Kendell's boyfriend, Jack, told her to take a break from work once in a while, but was angry with her when she said she was staying some more days in London to do just that. Kendell has a bit of snarkiness and sneakiness about her as well as Pauline and they go about working the case! This is a fast read and lots of fun and I just love the duo of Kendell and Pauline! Can't wait for their next adventure! I receive and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

I'm not quite sure how to really review this so I guess I'll just jump in. The things I liked about the story were the relationship between Kendall and Pauline; of course, we all love the pet aspect, even though somewhat unrealistic, I loved the setting, as London is my favorite city to visit, and I got a kick out of the fact that Kendall is a flight attendant and so was Pauline formerly (I really wanted to be one myself in my 20s).

The things I didn't like about the story included first and foremost, the manner in which the victim is murdered. It was particularly gruesome and in my mind, the worst way to die or be killed. It happened pretty quickly in the story and had me almost wondering if this was a cozy mystery or a thriller, of which I don't care for. Second, there were parts that were just not really realistic. Pauline being able to sneak that dog in everywhere, the actors just opening up to Kendall and allowing her access just because...; and the reason the killer killed the victim was so dumb to me. I mean, yes, I'd be mad as hell about what the victim did, but there was no evidence he would have used it against them or told anyone as it would have made the victim look just bad. In fact, the victim would have had more reason to kill the killer IMHO.

Well, for now, I'm going to go back to some vintage Shirley Flight mysteries. I'll jump back into the cozy mysteries after the holidays. For some reason, I'm never really interested in reading themed cozies like Halloween or Christmas.

Happy readying everyone!

A good start to a new series. Kendell has invested a lot of time in her work and has lots of holidays accruing because of that. The airline would like her to take her holiday as soon as, so that they can organize their staff schedules, so when an unexpected flight cancellation happens and Kendell finds herself stuck in London, she decides to prolong her stay and make it holiday time instead. Having met up with and made friends with an elderly woman, Pauline, Kendell accepts Pauline's invitation to spend the time together, exploring London and enjoying a trip to the world famous Globe theatre. What they did not bargain for was the main actor to be decapitated, and Pauline held by the police on suspicion of murder.

A fun read from the pen of Susan Harper. I received an ARC but this is my honest opinion. Enjoyable read, that keeps you guessing.

Murder at Macbeth is the first book in the Flight Risk Cozy Mystery series by Susan Harper.

I rate this 3 1/2 Stars, but rounded up since it is the first book in the series.

I enjoyed the friendship between Pauline and Kendall. Dot, the dog, is fun but a troublemaker.

I really enjoy the potential in this series where the stories take place across the globe. I don’t think I’ve read books where the characters are based in different countries, like Kendell’s boyfriend and best friend are.

I did find it hard to believe Pauline and Kendall behavior toward the police and at the morgue. As Americans in a foreign country, there would have been consequences.

Even if you guess who the killer is, it is extremely unlikely you will figure out the motive.

I received this book as a gift and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

This book bit.

Totally.

I had expected to read a mystery with the Scottish Play as the background but what I read was a notch above a really bad fan-fic.

I will give the author some kudos, the two lead characters were interesting but the rest? Blarg. Besides, I've been to England, London in fact, spent three years watching Sky News and BBC and I can tell you that the English dialogue was from no where. Same with the southern dialogue having spent 4 years in the south.

The mystery itself was pretty bad and the solution (given what I know about the subject) just didn't make any sense.

This is one book I would say skip it. And honestly, I am so sorry that I paid 99c for this.

1.5 stars -- read only if you get it free and maybe not even then.

An entertaining start to a new mystery series for cozy fans everywhere!
Murder At Macbeth, Susan Harper's kick off to her Flight Risk Cozy Mystery Series pits two airline stewardess Pauline (now retired) and her furball canine Dot with Kendall in a race against time to solve the murder of the actor playing MacBeth at London's famed Globe Theater when Pauline becomes Constable Bobby's prime suspect.
Great characters (although I'd rather read less about Dot and Kendall's fiancè Jack if the truth be told), great dialogue and awesome descriptive writing gaurantee Murder At Macbeth to be a must read, difficult to put down cozy mystery adventure! Highly recommend.

Shakespeare play

Kendall an airline stewardess cannot catch her flight home so on the spur of the moment decides to take some vacation time and shares a taxi with Pauline an elderly passenger who is treating herself to a world trip and treats Kendall to see a play at the Globe Theatre but a fake murder becomes all too real while Pauline has wandered off to bathroom and got lost. She was backstage when it happened so Kendall is out to clear her name. Couldn't put this book down as had me guessing throughout. Enjoy novels by Susan Harper and looking forward to reading the next in the series

I started reading these over Thanksgiving when I couldn't find anything else. I read the first set of six (they are like short novellas) but will just review all here. The writing and plots are so simplistic and underwritten. It feels like a murder solving duo from a 1950s ladies country club. I rolled my eyes a million times but still enjoyed the progression of their around-the-world trip. I mostly kept reading to see where they would go next and to see their list of activities and foods to eat. I appreciated that they were completely clean but still - I won't be searching out anymore.

Flight attendant Kendell meets an elderly passenger on a flight to London. Pauline invites Kendell to stay with her and her little dog Dot after a cancelled flight. At a play someone is murdered. The two of them try to figure out who the murderer may be. This is just the beginning of their adventures together. I love these two characters and look forward to traveling with them in their future adventures.

Love this new series. The characters were fantastic. The twist at the end was really great. Totally love Pauline and her little dog Dot. Pauline is so feisty and not your typical laid back “Granny”. Cannot wait to read the next book in this series. Looking forward to reading more of Kendell adventures traveling the world with Pauline and Dot. Ms. Harper has a definite winner with this series. Really enjoyed her other books and can recommend all of this to any mystery lover.

I enjoy this mystery series.

Kendell and Pauline are great characters. I like the plot of how the two of them are traveling abroad and end up solving mysteries. Kendell , flight attendant, meets Pauline on one of her flights. The two of them decide to spend time in London together. I like the humor and funny situations they find themselves, as they investigate a murder during a performance of MacBeth. I recommend this for anyone who enjoys humorous cozy mysteries.

Not at all believable

While cozy mysteries are to be fun, they should also be believable. Foreigners in another country interfering in police business or being suspected of criminal activity and not having their passports seized at the very least is just not how life works. The story had a few gaps in back story that were brought up later as, what appeared, an after thought. Poor editing. I finished it and was surprised by the ending. That brought my review up to 3 stars.

Another great as usual. Pauline and Kendell get stuck in London for a layover from a flight. They decide to go a play. Of course a murder happens, the lead man gets killed. He’s playing Macbeth. They help to clear their name and find out what’s going on. Received a free copy. Don’t miss out on this entertaining read.

What a hoot! The flight attendant with too much vacation time gets stranded in London with a Geritol junkie she met on the flight. Sightseeing turns into sleuthing to clear the oldster from police restrictions stemming from having been at the murder. Great fun and no less believable than TV cop shows.

Seriously?

The premise of the story is kind o f fun - a flight attendant who gets stranded in London due to flight issues. However, Ms. Harper has so many grammar issues that it is distracting. Combined with the thin plot and totally impossible events in the story (like sneaking into theaters and morgues), the book leaves a lot to be desired.

So like, this random flight attendant believed she could just waltz into the morgue and people would tell her info from an on-going investigation? That's...that's not how this works. That's not how any of this works. I'm all for gutsy heroines, but this one is nothing more than stupid - or naive. Hard pass.

Nice flowing plot, and with Kendell as a flight attendant, and with lay overs in many places, will be an added plus for the stories. Words of wisdom she got from a passenger led her to take some vacations day. Didn’t account for a play and murder on her first day. Enjoyable and look forward to more in series.

A quick cozy that has a imaginative subplot in the flight attendants new friendship and decision to do an adventure/vacation. Not giving too much away shortly into the story comes the murder in a bizzare way. The characters decide to do a little investigating of their own and see some sights of London. A nice short read and I look forward to reading more of the ladies acventures.

Not a great book, tiny opinion ion. A little too much of a cozy mystery with a weak plot. Also was supposed to be funny, but I found the humor pretty mundane. I did like the two characters , especially the older lady. The characters themselves were interesting.

I read the second book in this series first and had to go back and find out how this trip all started. Pauline is not you regular little old lady. She’s a hoot! I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.
