A random Dublin shooting? Two American's murdered in the back of a taxi. It appears random...until US Marshal Jack Dillon recognizes one of the victims.
An Ace of Spades in the victims mouth? Someone's seen too many movies. At least that's the thinking until the card appears in another victim, and another, and another one after that, and...
Fortunately they have a suspect... But then there's another murder he couldn't have possibly done. Somethings awfully wrong and it's up to US Marshal Jack Dillon to find out what's happening, and fast!
I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, I still live there as well as in Dublin, Ireland. I've been a soldier, freelance journalist, tended bar, sold designer cakes, owned a painting and decorating company along with a number of other schemes and scams. If that doesn't offend you I also play bagpipes with the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band. All my books stand alone, read them in whatever order you wish. They are filled with the sort of oddballs we are all curious about, but wisely, prefer to keep at a distance. None of my characters will be saving the world from terrorism, international banking conspiracies or coups to take over the government. Rather, they inhabit a world just below the surface of polite society, characters with one foot on either side of the law. The circumstances they find themselves in are usually due to bad decisions, but bad decisions lead to interesting stories. They serve not so much as an example but as a warning to us all. Thanks for taking the time, happy reading.
Jack Dillon is once more called out of a hot date to solve a Dublin murder.
An American Irish mobster is killed on the streets, and a playing card is put into his mouth. From there, a kill streak starts, and Jack and Company try to tack down the murderer, one step behind the whole time.
Despite not a lot of action, there is a good sense of tension generated.
I have been binge reading this series for the past two weeks and can’t stop. I started with volume 10-12, and read 13-16, and then back to Book 1.
What I enjoy about the series is the camaraderie between the two main characters, Dillon and Suel. The action takes place in Dublin which adds a dimension to the stories. U.S. Marshall Jack Dillon ends up there when he flies from NY to extradite a prisoner back to the States. Not wanting to reveal the details of book 1, I will just say that a dramatic incident takes place and as a result Marshal Dillon remains with the Garda (police) unit in Dublin.
There are some overlapping situations within the series, however, each book can be considered a stand-alone.
There is suspense, drama, and humor but not edge-of-your-seat tension, but I’m ok with that. I just enjoy the escape into the everyday lives of these two detectives in the Special Branch. I highly recommend this series to those who enjoy this type of mystery.
This book was okay but was boring compared to the Dev Haskell books by the same author. Mike Faricy must have known that too because he used pen names for his experiments in other genres. I guess a PI has more freedom than a U.S. Marshall--even one based in Ireland. However Dublin is a more interesting location than St Paul MN where most of Faricy's books are centered. Spade Work is not quite as boring as most police procedurals because Faricy let's his protagonist break the rules whenever it seems expedient. But the plot relies too much on dumb luck and incredible coincidences, making it seem absurd.
U.S. Marshal Jack Dillon has been assigned to Dublin, Ireland, to deal with crime issues that affect Americans. In this episode, a number of gang members have been shot and killed, left with a black ace of spades card in their mouths. Working with the Gardai, Jack is involved because several Americans are victims, and several other Americans appear to be involved.
I enjoy reading Patrick Emmett's (aka Mike Faricy) books. I've read many of his Dev Haskell novels that are funny, but the Jack Dillon books are more serious. The stories are well written, and the plots are well developed with good dialog. It was very hard for me to put the book down until it was finished.
Dillon a U.S. Marshal working along side with Suel a Garda in the Dublin police force. In the early morning hours an American man and woman are gunned down in the streets of Dublin ,who's responsible for thier deaths i'ts Dillon and Suel that cach the case and little do they realize these to are only the beginning of a trail of bodies to come. If you enjoy an action packed mystery full of intreage and dangerous caracters, this the mystery you want .🤔😮🙄 Kat
To be fair more of a 3.5, a good yarn that is definitely a build up to the next book. Free on unlimited kindle, I don’t know I’d buy it but I’m certainly reading the next one. If it’s a 3.5 too I’ll round up to 4. Personally I enjoy the Irish references, locations and vocabulary nearly as much as the plot. I’m also a bit confused as the kindle book details written by Mike Faricy, regardless you can’t beat the Shelbourne hotel in Dublin with a big stick!!
Read 1-6 in this series almost non stop. Very engrossing and entertaining mysteries. Loved the characters, even Lucifer the dog. Enjoyed the dialect and colorful terminology used in Dublin. Takes you on a visit to a charming country. Wish there was a 7-12, I'd read those too.
Great characters, mysteries, laughs. All good stuff. Should get 5 stars. But I refuse to give any book 5 stars that requires the purchase of another book in order to find out the ending.
Jack and Suel get a call for a double murder, 2 Americans with the Ace of Spade left as a calling card. Then 2 Russians were killed and another card left. There are more murders and Jack & Suel try to find clues. A really good who done it.
Dillon, Suel, and the rest of the Garda work to solve a series of murders in Dublin, Ireland. A well written police procedural with several twists and turns.
Another fun Jack Dillon story with all the usual content, Dillon gets dumped, Lucifer keeps dumping and Deitora keeps berating Jack. Him and Suel keep solving cases though and long may it remain so.
An ace of Spades is proving deadly for too many victims.keeping Marshall Dillion busy. Too many murders, and now a copy cat, for they had suspect. Nice cozy mystery with surprises and in Dublin.
Spade Work is Book 6 of 18 in the Jack Dillon Dublin Tales, but Patrick Emmett writes his tales without a lot of characters who require background introductions - each story is simple and complete on it's own. (You will also find some of his tales written under the name of Mike Faricy). What you see is what you get, and it's a good deal. Read his work in whatever order you want, and know that you will be greatly entertained. I received a complimentary digital copy of Spade Work from DigitalBookSpot and the author, but his series and box sets are very reasonable and some are available on Kindle Unlimited. Whether you know Dublin intimately or simply wish to visit vicariously, Emmett can take you there and show you a good time. We see the workings of the Dublin police, but Jack Dillon is one of us - a U.S. Marshall working with the police to assist us, American tourists, in peril or trouble over there. Good job! And he does a great job of taking you there and showing you an interesting and entertaining trip. I can't wait to read the first box set, which I purchased today.
