Jim and Karen's group have escaped the horrors of Vancouver and are travelling north, toward his parents home, in hopes that the remote location will allow them some measure of safety. What they encounter on the road is far more dangerous than anything the city had to offer. The defenses at Brother Paul's survivalist church are at a breaking point and a drastic choice must be made. As he shepherds his congregation north to a massive, secluded church compound, he learns that faith alone won't save his followers. It's going to take a hell of a lot of bullets and all the luck in the world. As they are besieged by both the living and the dead, these desperate groups find that the road to sanctuary is paved with bodies and painted in blood.

Love this series. Writing this after listening to the first 5 books back to back! Starting 6 today. The characters are just your every day normal people. Think you, your family and random people you pick up along the way! You get an almost minute by minute play out of the zombie outbreak. The action is nonstop. Jim i& Karen, his wife, are our heroes and both are just bad asses and I love them both so much! Sara is probably one of my favorite characters. We get a few new characters in each book. No one is safe! Jim & Karen will do anything to keep their girls safe! The action in all of these books is nonstop. Not sure how they all keep going! I’m ready for them to have a break already! They deserve it! I want to trust Leon but he makes it so hard! Shawna is just causing problems whenever she can! They needed to dump her ass a while ago. She knows they are good people but she wants to get back to her people and she is putting her life and the lives of everyone else in danger whenever she can! If she trusted them or held out a bit longer I know they would help her out! I wish we could have had our chain smoking trash mouth around a little longer! She was amusing! Ryder is going to continue to be an issue as well! Every time they say something is impossible it happens! When will they learn? What about brother Paul’s group? Is he destined to take all of his losses out on our main group? You can’t hate the man yet but I think we will before it’s all over with. This is a great series! I’ve been binging it! Tom Bishop did an amazing job narrating.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review
A great cast of characters and a great story. If the zombie apocalypse could happen the story that place out in the series of books is likely what would actually happen nothing goes right for the characters in this book. They have tear and heartbreak in failure at every turn every little tiny bit of success is met with 10 times as much failure or heart break. It is a very driving story that will keep you reading from beginning to end non-stop. And it ends on a cliffhanger that really gets your blood pumping.
This book takes over where #4 left off. While en route to Jim's parent's home, the group stops at a local market to beef up their supplies in the armored bus. While there, they are visited by a perceived sex maniac who threatens the group. During this confrontation, the store is surrounded by the dead who burst their way inside. To escape, the group must be creative. Meanwhile, Brother Paul and his followers are besieged at their compound and it is evident that they will soon be overrun. They agree to fight their way out and relocate to a bigger and more secure church near where Jim and his group are heading.
The ending will leave readers surprised and hungry to see what happens next. As expected, I quickly purchased book #6 in the series. I did penalize the author one star for typos and incorrectly used words in the story. Otherwise, It would have received 5 stars. An engaging series!
I've followed this series from book 1 & they just keep getting better. This was no exception. Jim & Karen and their crew are trying to make it to Jim's parents home. Not only do they have thousands of zombies following them, they have also made a couple of enemies. Brother Paul & his church are on the move, something tells me they're gonna run into our group again . And a nasty, revolting guy named Ryder is following Sara. His intentions are not good. There's lots of action and you kinda get comfortable with the characters...they are well written. Hopefully the next book will be soon.. 😉
I am really impressed with Zuko's books. I can't believe he is so new to writing! The story is fun, the characters are lovable and relatable, and it has a fast paced feel that you want from a zombie book. It is becoming slightly less focused on the zombies and more on the human threats in the last few books. Which seems surprising considering it has only been a few days since the outbreak but it works. I can't wait until book 6!
I have followed Jim and Karen since Day 1. Then I got totally hooked in Karen's first day as Mr. Zuko had those intertwining moments with Jim's first day. What excellent writing. Watch out for netball Brother Paul! But the servers from book one, no regrets. Mr. Zuma is a genius the way he weaves the story.
This is the second time I have read this book since it was released. It gets better each time I read it! I highly recommend it to all individuals who enjoy apocalyptic or zombie type books. Start with the first book in the series and read each one in order and you will have a grasp of what these families go through to survive.
I want more of this story! The characters are great and I really get involved with learning about their day to day lives now that the Zombie apocalypse has started. If you've never read one of Mr. Zukos books...do yourself a favor and read this series. You won't be sorry!
These people cannot seem to learn from their mistakes. It’s very frustrating. Also there’s a very juvenile obsession with sex for people who are supposed to be trying to survive.
The series stated well but has declined to the point that I’m done.
