In an age where spaceships traverse the sky like their water-borne brethren of ages past, humanity lives in fear. Ghouls live in the dark and await the time the human race drops its guard. Spacefaring society lies locked in a cold war with the Ghouls, dreading the time they attack and wipe out humanity.
This is not a story about that war.
The crew of the spaceship Descent is on a mission it thinks is an average case of data retrieval. The hull of the Moreau hides things more human experimentation and cross breeding with the inhuman. Among the carnage cowers a child. Dr. Risa Magee doesn’t know what she’s getting into when she takes this child under her wing. His cat ears and tail have marked him for death. Her own life will be put at risk when she defends the boy she names June. Her heart, however, may find healing from a tragedy in her past.
As the first book from Thea Larson I have to say that this novel is incredible. I wasn't expecting the sheer emotional toll this book would take on me as I made my way through.
Despite a few forgivable shortcomings the book is beyond immersive and entices you with tidbits of a clearly developed overworld. The Descent is a place you will become intimately familiar with, you will like and hate several members of the crew, you will likely fall in love with a very young boy, and you will be turning the pages to find out what's going to happen next.
We follow a military doctor who goes by various names, Risa being the most common, and her mission to gather data on a rogue scientist. What starts as something routine quickly becomes something much more as she discovers an alien that isn't quite an alien.
Thea Larson paints a universe in which humanity is seemingly run by a xenophobic government using an old war as reasoning for their crimes. This very strong narrative is quickly broken into the much more complicated social implications with various factions hinted at and intertwined with the main cast. Though we only see fragments of this greater conflict of interests it sets the stage for a much bigger story and world than we can't possibly explore in one book.
The book leaves many questions unanswered, setting up for a sequel, while still giving the reader a satisfying cap on the tale.
This book is a sleeper hit and I cannot wait for the next one.
