Rate this book
As Europe burns, Nazar plans his next conquest. His massed armies of darkness gather on the French coastline, waiting for the order to be given to attack at the very heart of the British Victorian Empire.Whilst Captain Charles Hayward recovers outside London, he desperately searches for news of his family. He is given little hope, but his love for them will drive him forward.A daring raid to bide time in France to slow the invasion, will use his experience of fighting against Nazar’s creatures and soldiers; it will not be without its perils. Captain Hayward will face a threat close to him on this mission, as will his men.Unknown to the Captain, his wife and children are struggling to survive in a broken and occupied Europe. A small band of refugees await rescue from an island off Denmark. Charles must undertake a second mission to a monastery in Russia to find the source of this evil. In that time the Empire will face an invasion on a scale it has never witnessed before. Where every man, women, and child, will pray that Queen Victoria’s armies prevail. Defiance in the face of evil is part two in the trilogy Victorian Flesh-eaters

Fast paced military horror

A fun fast paced read. A few odd bits of phrasing and a few strange expressions but nothing too grating. The introduction of Mills Bombs nearly two decades early felt a bit odd. Now the positives, imaginative, large in scale and fast paced combat scenes. I enjoyed it though and will be waiting for the third book.

A solid read

Did not always find it quite smooth to read, as the flow of the writing feels a bit jerky at times. A very engrossing tale nonetheless. Onto book three!
