The Lady and the Gent

Rate this book
A woman of great fortune...

Margaret Easton needs a husband, and she needs one now. Her parents are convinced that only a European will do, but Margaret wants nothing more than to stay in England. The trouble is that there is only one man Margaret can think of, or rather, one she cannot forget, and he wouldn't do as a husband at all. Then she finds herself in his care unexpectedly, and her hunt becomes even more complicated than she could have ever imagined.

A man of great mystery...

Rafe Thornton has never said more than ten words to Margaret Easton, but she is rapidly becoming the sole occupant of his thoughts. She is distracting him from his operative work as the Gent, and keeps him from his usual focused nature, which he doesn't mind at all. When she stumbles into his world, his work and his emotions collide, forcing him to choose between saving the Crown, and protecting his love.

This was a cute book that took in several social classes during the Regency Period in England. I enjoyed the urchins spying on the street as much as I enjoyed the ballroom.

The characters are unique and fun to read. In some places I felt that the story dragged, but it picked up momentum again and kept me reading.

2.5 stars. This was a rendition of the classic children's story of Lady and the Tramp, so it had great potential! I loved how the romance started with them being strangers to each other, but finding each other in the crowd and having their eyes meet, and then doing it again and again around town. It was a very romantic start!! But somehow the book just didn't keep that tension and excitement. Apparently it won the swoony award but I didn't find it that swoony...?

*parts of the book are discussed ahead that might be considered spoilerish, so I hid bits of my review*

It was sweet, but lots of elements of the story struck me as unbelievable. There were many instances when characters' reactions seemed unnatural:

- when he found her all trussed up and being chased by ruffians on the wrong side of town, I would imagine he would be surprised to see her dressed that way and horrified at her situation (after this initial reaction, he would have ask her what had happened, and been angry at whoever did this to her, etc) instead of immediately reacting with a compassionate, "Oh, not you, Pet," which was sweet but not a realistic initial reaction.
- when she KNEW that her guardian had sinister plans for her with Sir Vincent Castleton, she would have refused to go see him, right? She would have refused to get dressed in that hideous dress, refused to do her hair, refused to get in the carriage, etc.
- when Miss Ritson announced that Margaret was betrothed ANYONE in her place would have denied it immediately. Why did she allow Miss Ritson to say that in public and not refute it? I can't believe it was because she was spineless, because just before Miss Ritson said that, Margaret had put her her in place and showed some backbone, so I know she is capable of it. That was just weird that she would not refute that lie! ?
- when Rafe got why didn't Margaret immediately explain the entire situation to her father so that the wrong could be righted? Why on earth did she run up to her room to cry? What the- don't you want to fix this, girl?! After a while, her dad came to her bedroom to get the story, which she told, and he resolved to go to the magistrate and fix things - but I was just confused why she didn't feel more urgency to get the ball rolling immediately? It was just a strange reaction.
- when Rafe confessed to her that he was a spy, that should have elicited a response from her instead of her still being fixated on the fact that - I just expected that revelation to cause her to stop and let it soak in. That entire ending just didn't do it for me.

A few underdeveloped and/or unbelievable plot lines were also a distraction:

- why are no eligible bachelors interested in her? She is pretty, she is natural and unaffected, she is witty and interesting in conversation, she has good connections, and although it's not common knowledge that she's an heiress, it is still understood that she has a dowry. When she easily wins over every man in the book as soon as she meets him (within minutes; this was a dominant theme in the book), there is just no foundation that NO men have ever been interested in her over three seasons. Not believable.
- the whole chaperone situation was a little over the top
- why couldn't she know about Gent's upper-crust character (and true self), the Lord Marlowe? Why didn't he tell her? She knew from nearly the get-go that he was a spy of sorts. His inability to tell her who he was seemed contrived (something about it not being safe while his case was still open). Which leads me to another confusing part:
- why did he ask her to live with the gypsies with him? If he was willing to give up his spy job then it would be unnecessary to pretend he's not a landed gentleman, so he could just marry her as Lord Marlow.
- the traitorous criminal activity that he was working on wrapped up behind the scenes and seemed very underdeveloped to me. "Boom, that's all been settled, so now I can show Lord Marlow to Margaret." ?

I don't mean to be too critical - these were just confusing aspects of the book that took away from the story for me. Their one-day romantic development was too fast for a buildup and most of the great chemistry and tension from the beginning of the book faded out, so maybe that took away from it too. But, there were things I liked about it:

- like I mentioned, the amazing chemistry at the beginning of the book
- I liked his name, Rafe, and the way he was described - his good looks, his charm, his confidence, his competence, his fighting skills, his loyalty to her... "he worshipped her with his lips" was a great line. :)
- I liked Rafe's colleagues and Margaret's friends
- I liked that there was a full cast of characters in the book. I find that regency romances usually only have a very very small cast, which sometimes makes the story seem shallow, but this one felt more robust. I was interested in random characters like I wanted to know Lily Granger's tragic story (if it has a happy ending :)), I want to know the backstory on the Rothchilds, I'm interested in Rosalind's romance, etc. (I know there is a book about some of these characters, so this book piqued my interest.)

I've been wanting to read this one for awhile now. We meet The Gent in previous books so I was looking forward to finally getting to meet him and find out more about him. (You dont have to read previous books to read this one, it stands well on its own and looks like will be the first in a new spin-off series)

Gent was likable, charming, strong and I liked how he strived to be a gentleman even in his chosen profession. Margaret is a proper lady who longs for adventure. They're a good mix and have some fun moments together. I enjoyed the overall story and thought it was an entertaining read. Had to keep reading to see just how things would work out. I look forward to reading more in the serise.

If you enjoyed this and are looking for something similar, try: Friends and Foes, The Rejected Suitor or The Scarlet Pimpernel.

I can always count on Rebecca to write books with great romantic tension that never crosses the line. I'm so glad the Gent got his own book, and I loved that the heroine was raised by unconventional parents and thus didn't fit the usual mold.

This was a fun book to read and I loved the undercover mystery man persona of Rafe. He and Margaret have an undeniable connection, even before they officially met. It was sweet how they always looked for each other to make eye contact and while Margaret knew that he probably wasn't as he seemed, it didn't stop her from fantasizing. Fortunately for her he was even more than what she hoped ;) I was surprised at what Margaret allowed herself to endure at the hands of the chaperone/companion/matchmaker her parents hired sight unseen. It was strange that she, her parents, and friends who might have rescued her allowed someone of a lower class, obvious animosity, and questionable taste to have that much power over her life. I loved the time Rafe and Margaret spent together and how they were able to get to know one another. Their time with the gypsies was especially fun and exciting! There are plenty of great kissing scenes and I enjoyed their chemistry and the dynamic of their relationship. The intrigue of Rafe's work added an element of suspense and made this an enthralling book I didn't want to put down. Fans of The Suspect's Daughter by Donna Hatch will definitely enjoy this book!

(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)

Fun historical romance! I love how unconventional both the hero & heroine were. I struggled a little getting through the first half of this one but loved the second half. I will definitely pick up the next book in the series. Great bantering and tension.

Margaret Easton has one season left in London to find a husband. Her parents like to travel, and want to go back abroad. The problem is that Margaret hasn't found anyone she likes in London, aside from the mysterious stranger, known as The Gent.

When Margaret's parents leave her in the care of a companion taxed with finding Margaret a husband, Margaret finds herself criticized, starved, dressed like a common strumpet, and locked in her room. If she has ever needed a gent in her life, now is the time!

I loved this story! I enjoyed Rebecca Connolly's Arrangements series. The Gent was a minor character in a few of those books, and I was so excited to finally get to know the man. This new series, the London League is different because it focuses on a group of men working as spies for the Home Office in London. They have code names and hide their friendship behind sarcasm, but these men have each other's backs. I cannot wait to see more of Cap, Rogue, Hal, and Rook. Margaret and Rafe (The Gent) were perfect for each other. I loved his protectiveness, and how Margaret could handle all of the various people in Rafe's life. She could charm and make anyone feel special.

This book had it all: adventure, mystery, wit, and stolen kisses that would make you swoon (if anyone did that these days). I laughed. I blushed (that's my version of swooning). I went back to reread my favorite parts. This is a story that will leave you with a smile on your face, and if you're reading before bed, a few hours less sleep than you intended.

As an Anglophile I like just about anything that has to do with England including this book. I do feel that there are some difficulties such as as the character of Margaret. Rebecca Connolly’s The Lady and the Gent (London League #1) has a female protagonist who does not appear to ring true. I could not get a handle as how to picture her. The descriptions that are written either conflict or the character is seriously one dimensional. In addition, how was Margaret missed in her first two Seasons in London as she is worth a fortune or two?! I definitely liked Gent. I was able to picture him very easily. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. Hopefully, the author will relax and develope her characters a bit more to aid her readers to truly become enveloped by the characters and the story.

Margaret Easton's parents want to return to Europe so if she doesn't find a husband this season she is going to have to go to Europe with them. But she doesn't want any ol' British gentleman; she has fallen in love with The Gent.

Rafe, aka Lord Marlowe, may seem boring to those who know him, but his secret life as a government operative is anything but boring. Unfortunately, he fell in love with Margaret Easton as The Gent and can't let her know his true identity. When Margaret unknowingly lands herself smack in the middle of the mess he is investigating, it's up to Rafe to save her.

I'm excited to read the rest of the books in this series...

There were too many street or undercover names to keep straight. It was confusing and, at times, a bit of overkill. All in all, I enjoyed the read.

LOVED it!

Oy- where do I start with this book?! I absolutely LOVED it!!! The intrigue, adventure, and danger combine with an incredible swoon-worthy romance that had me staying up way too late to finish. A beautiful story, where our main characters go throughout England, from the regency ballrooms of the upper class, to the slums of the lower class, to the outskirts of the gypsy encampments. I loved seeing it all through their eyes! Especially our main character Margaret. She had spunk, wit, and a sweet temperament. And “Gent” as he is called, is such a great hero!! I loved the way that he and Margaret began their romance, and watching it grow had my toes curling in delight. Without giving away too much, I wanted to say I loved the “ten seconds”, the rain, and definitely each kissing scene. I can’t wait for more books in the series! A great clean romance, and one I will definitely re-read again!!!

This was difficult to review. I really enjoyed the romance in this. This couple was so sweet and the romance developed beautifully. I would give the romance 4.5 stars. The "League" part of this book was not so good. Much of it was convoluted and confusing and I never quite understood what the Gent was supposed to be doing. There were so many charters written as though I was supposed to know who they were, but this is the first book in the serries. Too many characters with not enough writren about them for me to understand how they all fit in. I realize there is an entirely other serries so maybe that is why they are so underdeveloped. So I would give all of the "League" part 2 stars. So overall, this is a three star read for me.

Sigh** Dang that was a romance. It just buckles your knees and makes you want to melt to the floor. I had no idea how this author was going to pull off this kind of story, it was so different in execution then any other. I was so nervous! I wanted these two to get together with nail biting need! I was a little worried that finding the right lady for Gent would be tough but Margret was a readers dream leading lady. I loved her. Rebecca is a master at story telling and creating great tension in a romance. Clean with some great kisses.

Loved this first book in the London League series. Rebecca Connolly is one of my favorite authors. We finally get the story of the mysterious Gent mentioned in her Arrangement series. In this book, Gent meets the woman of his dreams, but she only knows him as the friendly disheveled working class man. As a peer of the realm and a secret agent for the crown, Rafe aka The Gent must decide to risk his identity in order to save the woman he loves.

Not my style. The first 3/4 was torture for me, the main character was swooning so much I began to wonder if she wasn’t actually in love but instead had some kind of medical condition. An alternate title for the book could have been Girl, You’re Not In Love, You’ve Got Consumption.
But the last 1/4 was more entertaining. Enough to bump my rating up from one star to two.

This story was so dumb. The heroine allowed a servant to control her entire life. The hero was no help. He left the heroine in an ally to get arrested by a cop who thought she was a whore and he didn't rescue her even though it was his fault she got arrested. Furthermore, the heroine didn't find out the hero's identity until the very last chapter. One of the dumbest books I ever read.

The Lady and the Gent is a fun and enjoyable book. Rebecca Connolly is the queen of writing banter. She does such a great job with romantic tension. Her books always bring a smile to my face. Each character is a wonderful surprise, especially Rafe. Oh, I enjoy him so much. Margaret is sweet and spunky. All the poor thing wants to do is stay in England, while her parents have other ideas in finding her a husband. This book has it all. With romance, intrigue, lovely kisses, and mystery.

Honestly, I know better than to start a new book and series at bedtime. Especially when it's an author I'm familiar with and really enjoy. I'm suffering from book hangover because I could not put this down.

If you've read The Arrangements series (which I highly recommend) then you are already familiar with the character, The Gent. However, you don't need to have read them to enjoy this stand-alone book.

The life of a spy can be a lonely one. The Gent lives a double life; one as Lord Marlowe and one as The Gent. He is very good at his job as a spy for the Crown. Napoleon's been taken down, but his supporters still linger in France and England. The Gent is tirelessly working to bring down a network of nobles working to supplant the Crown. The last thing he ever thought would happen to him is that he'd fall in love.

Margaret wants nothing more than to marry for love and stay in England. At 22, her parents are determined to see her married and set out to the Continent to find her a suitable bachelor. Knowing this is to be her last Season, she wants nothing more than to find a good match; but her thoughts keep going to the one man she knows would be no match at all for her, and she doesn't even know his name.

After her parents leave England in the care of a chaperone they've hired to help her find a suitable match, her world comes crashing down. When her world collides with The Gent' s operative work, will he be able save the love of his life and the Crown?

The Gent made his first appearances in the Arrangement series books and from what I remember of him, he was very mysterious. Always the hero showing up at just the right moment or having just the right information to save the day... But we didn't really learn anything about him.

I got this book last night and thought I'd read a little before bed. Having "just one more chapter" syndrome I stayed up too late reading. And then after finally going to sleep I woke up realizing that I had been dreaming about The Gent. In my dream he didn't really fit the description of dress as in the book but he was mysterious and heroic.

I enjoyed the book but had just one problem with it. The Gent was so mysterious and seemingly all knowing in the other books and this book allowed us to see him as, for lack of a better word, human. And as it turned out, he wasn't always in the right place at the right time to save the day. But, he was endearing. You kind of have to let go of the total hero worship thing though.

It is almost an insta-love story except that it isn't. I found I totally believed that Margaret and the Gent fell in love over staring at each other for 10 seconds at a time over a period of months having said only a few pleasantries to each other. It was pretty swoony romantic in fact. I enjoyed their relationship and felt sad when it was strained.

I was confused as to why Margaret wasn't sought at least by fortune hunters if no one else in society. And a little confused as to how Miss Ritson gained as much power as she did. Margaret was all together too pliable. And why wasn't family doing more to step in and save Margaret? And why did her parents not feel concern when they were not getting any communication from their daughter? But had any of this been fixed, there would be no story so I guess these were important factors. Miss Ritson should have gone to jail for abuse or reckless endangerment or something I think. I would have liked to see her suffer a bit in consequence to her actions.

I enjoyed the read. It was mostly clean. There was some innuendo, talk about whores on the street, sexual references and leering kind of behavior. Kisses were all that actually happened in the book though.
Some occasional mild language.
Some violence.

I am curious about the next book. I didn't find Rogue at all endearing, or even likable but I assume the next is about him. And I assume there will be something redeemable about him.

I loved the characters in this book. Gent, who is a spy notices a pretty woman, and for months they just look at each other, or he holds the door for her. He cannot blow his cover. This is a lovely, tender, and clean romance. His friends and colleagues do their best to watch over her, but when her parents leave her in the care of some one sinister, he may have to step in. I loved the ending, and the Epilogue was a great addition. Gent stole my heart as well, but Margaret was what he truly desired. Lots of spying, and kissing, but nothing to graphic in either effort. 5 Stars. A perfect romantic, mystery , with humor, compassion, and mystery.

This book begins a new series, but there are appearances from characters from her previous Arrangement series. We have seen the mysterious 'Gent' in many of the books in the Arrangement Series. It was fun to have a book that centered on him.
Typical, fun read from Rebecca Connolly.
I read about 75% of this book while watching the Super Bowl. It was Super Fun! lol. :)

I'm a little disappointed in this. I had such high hopes for the Gent's story, but found the ending rushed and not terribly satisfying. I needed more details. Where was the final confrontation with the companion? What about Castleton? How did it all come together? I was left with far too many questions for my taste, and I'm not thrilled with that. 2.5 stars.

I picked up this story because it looked like fun. And it was. Clean and amusing.

My best description of it is "A Barbara Cartland retelling of Lady and the Tramp." (No Peg singing in the dog pound though--sorry.)

If you don't believe me, read it! :-)

(For those of you who've never heard of Dame Barbara, she wrote a bazillion historical romance novels. Most including gypsies . . .)

Sizzling diet spice…

Oh my word, this was another to-die-for romance. Rafe and Margaret, their banters and playfulness, and those sizzling moments makes me want to sigh happily right now. Their were plenty of villains who deserve much worse than explosive diarrhea during rush-hour traffic. It was a wonderful mix of suspense, drama, humor and some serious romance.

I loved these two. It didn't hurt that I knew many of the characters from other books. It all added to the fun, mystery, intrigue and romance. This is a clean love story that I will enjoy reading again.

Really not great. The book needed a good edit; I found so many comma splices and other typos. There were so many characters that I felt confused at who was who and almost felt like I was reading a sequel without reading the first, but this is supposed to be the first in the series. Not a lot of redeeming qualities here. Lots of plot holes, not a lot of resolution, no understanding of character motivation…..I really didn’t like it.
