Not my cup of tea
I don't think I will be buying any more books by this author. This felt like an expensive chapter of a larger book rather than a novella in its own right. The conversation was too stilted for my tastes, the men too cliche in their over-protective warriorness and the children too perfect. It felt a tad too contrived and lacked flow. The raven-like Bird was also not a pet, but a sentient being from mythology that was hardly a footnote in the brief part of the story that was told, and disappeared as soon as the gift of a feather and raven-eye was given. I couldn't quite put my finger on why I disliked this book so much, I think it just wasn't for me, which is surprising, as I usually like books of this genre.
