Daniel Reid was born in 1948 in San Francisco and spent his childhood in East Africa. After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in East Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley in 1970, and a Masters of Arts degree in Chinese Language and Civilization at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in 1973, Reid moved to Taiwan, where he spent 16 years studying and writing about various aspects of traditional Chinese culture, focusing particularly on Chinese medicine and ancient Taoist health and longevity systems. In 1989, he relocated to Chiang Mai, Thailand, where he continued his research and writing until 1999, when he immigrated with his wife Snow to the Byron Bay region of Australia, where he now makes his home.
GOOD BOOK IF YOU ARE INTO CHINESE PHILOSOPHY, HEALTH, CHEE GUNG ETC.. OR SIMPLY CURIOUS. NO NEED FOR BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE. A REAL EYE OPENER , IT WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU LOOK AT YOUR HEALTH. I HAVE SO FAR READ IT 5 TIMES IN THER LAST 15 YEARS , HAVE APPLIED THE TECHNIQUES AND IT HAS CHANGE MY LIFE....
Great Info...wish I was disciplined enough to do all it recommends, but I'm smart enough to do a lot of it. Try it for yourself and see if things don't work out better
I was quite inspired and persuaded at the time of reading in on my trip through Asia, but afterwards I came to realize that it also contains a lot of bullshit. As a Western citizen, you will get the feeling that your eating habits are dangerously wrong and that the Taoist lifestyle guarantees health and longevity, but he cannot present any compelling evidence for it. Some fables that he mentions are clearly ridiculous, such as people who died at age older than 150 or so.
Great book on taoist philosophy. Reid covers diet and nutrition, includiing sample menus, detoxifying the body, specific foods and drinks as treatment for disease, breathing exercises, physical exercises for long life and total relaxation, acupuncture and massage techniques, herbal aphrodisiacs, and taoist philosophy on sex. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the taoist way of life or anyone just wanting to improve overall health and longevity.
this book is like a bible. a great reference to keep around. it covers everything from cleansing to proper food mixing, to tantra. it comes from an esoteric perspective but the information/techniques are timeless and simple.
One of the best books on Taoism health, period. Daniel wrote this in the 80's and is far ahead of the game. That we are all still reading this 30 years later says a lot. Highly recommended.
Classic text by American Taoist expert that goes back to the foundational Taoist texts on health and sexual practices (sometimes too literally) and conveys it all with wry wit yet profound expertise for skeptical Western audiences; the author himself is no mountain hermit but a widely traveled hippie with an encyclopedic knowledge of Eastern cultures and plant medicines to boot.
A life altering book based on how you take it. But even for those looking to just explore a different and possibly exotic mindset- it’s an amusing read to say the least.
Such a great 'reference' book about so many areas of life, but I disagree with the premise that longevity is the chief aim of life. As the book puts it, "Taoism is concerned primarily with life on earth. It unequivocally equates physical and mental health and insists that only a strong, healthy body can house a strong healthy spirit, which is why Tao focuses so strongly on health and longevity." The assertions that "a supreme state of being-a sublime state that lies deeply locked within every human being...can be reached only through the greatest personal effort and self-discipline", and that death is a natural part of life, are, in my opinion, faulty.
Oriental philosophy and culture has so much intuitive wisdom to offer, that we don't have in our Western collective consciousness.
In "The Tao of Health, Sex, and Longevity: A Modern Practical Guide to the Ancient Way," Daniel Reid invites readers on a transformative journey, unlocking the secrets of the East to revitalize our everyday lives. His work weaves together an intricate tapestry of Eastern philosophies and practical wellness techniques that are as timeless as they are profound. The text is a gentle reminder of the harmony that exists between our mind, body, and spirit. Reid captures our interest with his engaging yet deeply informative approach, making the book an invaluable guide for anyone seeking to enhance their life’s quality in a holistic manner.
Reid’s exploration of traditional Eastern medicine and philosophy is presented with a refreshing clarity that captivates while demystifying complex concepts. Every page of "The Tao of Health, Sex, and Longevity" is infused with the serene simplicity of Taoist teachings that urge us to align our lives with nature’s rhythms. His profound insights are real eye-openers, encouraging a shift in perspective, rekindling our innate connection with the world around us, and setting the stage for a harmonious existence.
The detailed unveiling of the Taoist lifestyle serves not only as a manual for physical well-being but also as a gateway to spiritual serenity. Reid’s adept fusion of ancient practices and modern sensibilities transforms the simple act of living into an art form. He captures the reader's emotions and intellect, tugging gently at the heartstrings of curiosity and possibility. The book speaks to those yearning for a deep, soul-nourishing transformation, presenting timeless wisdom in an accessible, engaging manner.
Throughout this remarkable guide, Reid’s passion for the subject ignites a fire within the reader. His intricate knowledge and reverence for Eastern traditions shine through, leaving a lingering sense of inspiration. "The Tao of Health, Sex, and Longevity" stands out not only as a beacon of ancient wisdom but also as a practical companion for modern life. The seamless blend of practice and philosophy sets a new standard for self-help literature, empowering readers to envision and pursue a more balanced, fulfilling existence.
This work merits a 5 out of 5 star rating for its profound impact, clarity of message, and timeless relevance. Daniel Reid channels ancient knowledge into an enchanting narrative that promises transformation and enlightenment. Whether you seek physical vitality, mental clarity, or spiritual peace, this book offers a holistic path that resonates deeply and stays long after the last page is turned.
More like 3.5. There are some practices I will definitely try, and I learned a lot about ancient Chinese thought and Tao. Full of impressive research. I did often feel like he was trying to prove Taoism with correlation when there was no evidence of causation. Many of the practices appear to provide health benefits by their own merits without having to be connected to Tao. Worth reading.
Summary: 1) Don’t worry about how much you eat, or for the most part, avoiding specific foods. Fast regularly, eat lots of raw food, and avoid eating certain types of food together. 2) Exercise (soft exercises like Tai chi) and practice breathing exercises daily. 3) Sex can be more than just a drug-like pleasure. There are many health benefits if you focus on more than just yourself. (This was mostly aimed at men). 4) Meditate and don’t fear death.
I have owned this book for a few years and have skimmed it several time but hadn't yet read it from cover to cover. Although I probably won't apply every single practice described in this book to my life, I found it very interesting to learn about traditional chinese health practices and routines with both their point of view and a more traditional western approach alongside it, loads of study sources that I can research for more thorough investigation into the hows and whys etc. I will definitely try some things out for myself that I think I could easily implement into my current lifestyle to experiment and see how my body reacts. Either way this is a fantastic reference book that covers all things health related, from exercise and breathing to ejaculation, food and pooping too. It's very complete and provides bits of ancient china history also. Overall very interesting !
El Tao de la salud, el sexo y una larga vida by Daniel Reid is an amazing book which gives you accurate data about the Principles of Taoism.
Providing a through analysis of every Principle, the book tells you which are the Principles, how to put them into practise and explains in detail all the benefits for your health.
From the point of view of the Western Society , most of the practises described here to stay healthy could sound shocking and very difficult, not to say impossible, for the ordinary citizen to perform.
Still, I would recommend the reading of this book for two reasons. Firstly, it is a unique book in terms of getting general culture about this Chinese philosophy of life; Secondly, because I am sure everybody can take something useful out of the book to incorporate to his/ her lifestyle in order to improve health.
A lot of practical advice with some historical and anecdotal background throughout the book. Some of the claims of the history as well as recommendations definetely require open-mindedness, sometimes crossing into the metaphysical realm. Nevertheless the book also includes plenty of explanations based on western logic and scientific explanations that make enough sense as far as I can tell. Most of the practices mentioned require discipline that most of the “normal” people will not have. If I myself was able to follow the book’s recommendations and confirm its claims as legit I would give the book 5 stars.
No me gustó.
I was particularly interested in the food section, proper combining and the food role in curing ailments. A wonderful history lesson on Tao. Glad to know there are still practitioners here on earth. Some parts I will take, some parts seem extreme. Overall a good reference book that I will refer to again and again.
This is an excellent book on Taoism that provides you a practical guide on your health, with lots of suggestions that can help you improve your health and well-being. Even implementing some of these suggestions can make a difference in your life and strengthen the work that you do with your inner alchemy.
It was a pretty good read, but felt as though the author was more concerned about proving taoist philosophy and practices are relevant, rather than just teaching them and letting the reader judge whether it's relevant for them personally. I found it a bit thin on the teaching aspect, and a bit too heavy on the persuading aspect.
Interesting to see how much of “new” modern wellness thinking is actually very old. Prior generations hundreds and thousands of years ago were already fasting, eating a natural diet, taking dietary supplements, doing stress management, meditation, focusing on sleep…
Phenomenal writing. Reid makes excellent parallels between traditional and western medicine, while highlighting the originality of traditional Chinese medicine and pointing to so many of its countless contributions to medical science.
