The 28th Gate Series #1

The 28th Gate: Volume 1

Rate this book

With a stolen experimental starship and a pair of advanced synthetic limbs, Hunter isn’t an average bounty hunter.

When he accepted the job on a backwater planet, Hunter thought it would be easy. He and his partner just had to track down a missing researcher. But when they find her, she’s fled a quarter of the way around the massive ring of twenty-seven gates and Hunter realizes all is not as he was told.

That simple realization, and Hunter’s drive for retribution, kick off a series of adventures leading to the most important discovery since the fall of the Gate Age—and put him in direct confrontation with the corp he’s been running from for the past 10 revolutions.

Set in a far distant future, The 28th Gate is a series of episodic novelettes, spread across six volumes in three seasons, telling the story of Hunter’s struggles against the AAA corporation that created him. Each episode has the action, character, and plotting of a complete story all crammed into an espresso-like package, with each season chronicling a different arc in the overall epic.

Join the adventure now in The 28th Gate: Volume 1, with episodes 1–6 of Season I!

t a fun ride! I really enjoyed this. Its fast paced, I love the charectors, and there is something unique about how the story is told. A couple of laughs and some nice action in there as well. I really enjoyed the world building that was accomplished in such a short time. Its a story that could go on for awhile because there are little mysteries tucked away among the action. What happened to the humaniry that disapeared leaving only tech behind? What is Hunter's origin?

The "ending" of this volume is satisfactory but I'll gladly read the next volume. I'm not sure how to classify this. Its not space opera or hard sci fi feeling. Its just a good ride.

I put off reading this for a good few months as I had so many other books that looked better. I should have started with this and left the others or at least some of them. This is a page turner for those that love action scifi.

The 28th Gate is worth the read.

A really fast beat science fiction action story.
Hunter is great and loves his guns and I adore Gloria and Katherine as well. I'm going to have to get the next book and fast!!

Not as awful as it could have been, but not as good as I was hoping. This will be the only one I read. The last third should have made me want to read faster, but it did not, and I skimmed a lot just to be dome with it. Nothing surprised me in any way. It might appeal to people into fictional gun details, the MC does go on.

There's a reason the MC is the way he is, that was good.

As for the publication quality, it needed another edit pass, not for typos but for clunky dialogue and sentences. Someone looked at what a spell check program flagged, but did a merely okay job at line-editing.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It wound up being a really fun science-fiction adventure book. You aren't necessarily given a complete picture of the world, but there is enough to make it interesting. The book takes place in an age past the golden age of technology, called the Gate Age in the books. Battling for power are giant corporations who are willing to do about anything to gain access to new technological discoveries.

In the midst of this we follow Hunter, a former test subject from one of these corporations who escaped and is now a bounty hunter with his partner Gloria. We follow some of his bounties and are introduced to new characters and situations throughout.

One of the fun things about this book is that each chapter is kind of like an episode from a TV show, at least that's kind of how I pictured it. Each chapter also starts with a fun detailed description of one of the weapons in this future world and each one connects to that particular story. It's kind of a fun little way of introducing stories. The characters are also pretty fun and enjoyable.

Really the only problem I had with the book is that it was clearly a book made with the intention of sequels. Where the book ends isn't really a complete story. This isn't terrible because the episodic nature of the chapters really helps. Plus I don't really fault a more independent author doing this so that they can make money on subsequent books, after all I got this book for free, but it still makes the book feel incomplete.

Overall, I would really consider this a 4.5 book. It's fun and I really enjoyed it. It's not super heavy science-fiction, but the mix of detail and adventure made it a fun trip. I'm very interested in reading the follow-ups. The only real downside is that it's not a complete book. I understand the reasons, but that doesn't really change that fact.

This was a fun read, the characters and settings were interesting, nothing too complicated with lots of room for expansion in future novels. Might make for an interesting setting for a Sci Fi Roleplaying Game.

There was alot of action and normally i would have given it a higher review. But I'm just not a fan of the character in the book talking to the reader of the book. 📖

Fun Adventure

A well paced book that moves quickly and easily through its paces. The main character is bold and very lucky it seems. He likes to use more force than necessary and leaves the subtlety to his partners. Enjoyable read.

Liked the story. Didn't care much for all the weaponry details. But if that's your thing you'll really like this book. Moved along quickly with just enough details to keep you on track. A quick read, full of action.

The book goes at a satisfying pace and is very engaging, although you don't necessarily like the main characters. The reason why the hunted have a bounty on their heads is not really used or explained in any great detail.

Bo sure how many books in the series will be different enough to kept the readers coming back for more, however, I will probably see how far I get with them.

I enjoyed this book. The author has an easy style and vivid imagination. The tech sounds good and it is entertaining as long as you are not the sort of reader that to wants to know how things work.

Review of: The 28 th Gate Vol 1

I liked the story and the characters involved. My only complaint is with long technical explanation of his weapons. A few less weapons and less info. about them.

While I was intrigued by the characters and the story, the actual reading of this book was ROUGH. Every chapter seems to open with an overly-technical description of a piece of tech (usually a weapon), but then the characterization and worldbuilding details are largely glossed over or mentioned in passing. The dialogue needs a lot of work, and the chapters feel like they're working too hard to intentionally leave the reader on a cliffhanger. Overall, it just didn't feel like a polished, finished piece of writing; it felt like an early draft that hasn't yet gone through a rigorous editing process.

Excellent read!

This is an excellent and well written story. There is a lot of action, without singing to "thud and blunder". The characters are well fleshed-out and relatable. The tech seems to be logical and understandable. My only gripe is is with the odd units of time. I could never figure out if the author was relating a period of time of seconds, minutes, hours or weeks. It is a minor annoyance, but still off-putting. "Try it, you'll like it!"

The Goodreads description of this book is more accurate than the description that I read of it on Amazon. This is not a book of one complete story but descriptions of episodes in the life of a bounty hunter. And there is major emphasis on the weapons he uses. The story actually reminded me of a video game like Zelda. There is not much story or action in this book. I am sorry that I also bought book two on Amazon and thus will read more of this.

While a little unusual in presentation (books and episodes), that presentation actually did a good job of breaking the story into manageable chunks. The character development was pretty good and the action kept things moving along. All in all a good story. I went ahead and purchased the rest of the series and I plan on thoroughly enjoying them,

Sci-fi Series

An enjoyable read that feels like an old TV show. Action-packed and somewhat shallow. Lest you think this is not a bad thing, it is not; it is a major and enjoyable plus! Too many of today’s sci-fi series/shows are more like soap-operas in a sci-fi setting or have some cause the authors want to harp about. This series is light-hearted enjoyment.

Hunter has an artificial enhanced arm and leg from a corporation. He also has a stolen stealth space ship from the same corporation. He leads a life as a bounty hunter. This is a sometimes humorous sometimes serious book. i enjoyed it.

One of those free kindle books and this one is really enjoyable. If you like sci fi bounty hunting with nutty future tech companies then I'd absolutely say give it a go.
If you like sci fi in general I'd say give it a go. Definitely worth the read..
