Cedarblurbs: Humorous Insights & Hindsights from Cedarburg

Rate this book
What could possibly go on in a small town that would be of interest, entertainment or amusement to anyone? Why in the name of Cedarburg would you read this book?

Why in the world would you want to read about the goings-on in town so quaint that it’s not a town, nor a ‘ville, but a burg?

The fact is that no resident New Yorker is a resident of a city of 8.406 million. They are each a member of a burg of their own making, some of which are quite tiny.

Every hamlet in the world is filled with humans and every human is filled with foibles. As you enjoy the foibles of others, look inside this book for a veritable feast of foibles. You can relate.

This book is a collection of local newspaper columns from 2002 - 2015 has a hyper-local focus and with a focus on humor. It is chock-full of observations into these foibles. Is it fair and balanced? I’ve been called unbalanced, so you can draw your own conclusions about how I write mine.

You are the mayor of your own self-defined burg. May your reign be a reign of humor.

Not what I expected. For some reason I thought it was written decades earlier and that I would be familiar with more people mentioned in it. Nope. It's a compilation of articles he wrote for the local paper. It starts at 2002 and goes to 2015. I am more familiar with the Cedarburg of the 1970s and 80s.

A lot of the earlier chapters complain about the city council which is certainly not relevant now. Their names aren't mentioned because at the time his blurbs were current events and likely their names were found on the front page of the newspaper. I have no idea who those people are now. When he does provide names it's no one I've never heard of. I don't even recognize any of the surnames as families I knew from Cedarburg. I did recognize some of the places like Tomaso's. Oh yeah, he hates roundabouts too.

I'm not a fan of this type of writing that ends up just being judgmental rather than witty. He claims to be a music fan to include new wave but has to mention how bad Duran Duran is. Why bother alienating readers who might like that band? Pretty sure his readers were from the generation when they were popular. He states that atheists hate when people say Happy Holidays. What? I have never heard that before. Must be some Fox News nonsense. But he makes it clear he hates atheists. More alienating material. He misspells the name of actor Joe Mantegna (not sure if he spelled it wrong on purpose) and makes a bad joke about it. Snarky and rude is not funny.

This book will not appeal to anyone who is not familiar with Cedarburg in the 2000s. Not one bit.

I did like the time capsule aspect of it as he would mention in his end of the year articles who had passed away that year and write some things about them. Other than that I mainly skimmed the book as I did not find it funny or entertaining and was clueless about most of the things he wrote about. I don't think it even deserves two stars but I'm being polite and nostalgic.
