Connor is Kerri’s good luck charm, but is he lucky enough to win her heart?

Basketball star Kerri “Killer O’Connor” knows she’s bad luck, and she's tried everything to keep it from ruining her life -- a rabbit's foot, a horseshoe, her dad's lucky shirt -- she's never without one.

When her dad gets hurt in a freak accident on Friday the 13th, Kerri is sure she’s to blame, but then a boy shows up wearing her father’s old sweatshirt, and Kerri’s luck suddenly does a 180.

Convinced that Connor Murphy is the talisman she needs to change her fate, Kerri begs him to be there for her while her dad is recuperating. Connor doesn’t believe in luck, but he’d do anything to win the girl of his dreams, even if that means spending all his time with Kerri.

Connor never expected to fall for the kooky girl with the crazy superstitions, and Kerri’s convinced that Connor wants someone else. But when luck turns to love, can Connor convince Kerri that he’s more than just her lucky charm?

Cute YA

This is a cute teenage, high school story. The characters are true to their age group and felt just like I remember high school feeling. I liked the quirks of the main character.

Content: swearing, profanity, a couple crude comments, sexual comments

This book was so much fun to read! My previous book that I read seemed to help me out of this weird reading mood I was in, so I decided to pick up another contemporary romance book. This book was exactly the type of read I was in the mood for. It was fun, sweet, cute and romantic.

Good Luck Charm was well written, the writing flowed well and I easily got sucked into the story and wanted to see what would happen next to Kerri and Connor. It was a lot of fun to read. Kerri has the worst luck ever and has an overabundance of good luck charms to try and counter her bad luck. It might sound like it would be too much, but I actually really liked how the author handled the luck theme. It added some quirkiness to Kerri's character and caused some fun situations. Although I did feel bad for Kerri with how much bad luck she had.

I liked both Kerry and Connor. The book is written in dual point of view and that helped to get a feel for them. After her father lands in the hospital due to an accident, Kerri convinces Connor to be her good luck charm. And that's how their friendship starts. This book is a bit of a friends to lovers romance. For the longest time they don't realize they have feelings for the other, but that moment when they do realize that was great.

Kerri is a great female main character who speaks her mind and isn't afraid to say what she thinks. And while others might not believe her bad luck, she does. This book lightly touches upon the power of superstitions and how this influences her character. I liked how she was a bit quirky and very forward, but also nice. And Connor was such a nice guy, he was so sweet and helpful to Kerri. And he knew how to cook, that was a nice touch as well.

I liked seeing these two become friends and how they interacted. And how they have some slightly awkward conversations at first and how they talk through them was fun to read. There is a bit of drama toward the end that I didn't care too much for, but it was necessary for the plot and to resolve everything. And I was happy with how things ended. I wouldn't have minded a few scenes to actually see them as a couple, as the book ends right when the become a couple.

There are some side characters, but the main focus is on Kerri and Connor. Kerri's family also plays apart and they were fun to read about. Then there is her friends Mia, who is the main character of the first book. But even tough I haven't read the first book I never felt like I was missing anything. And Jake the character of the next book gets introduced, but I found him kinda annoying. I wonder if he changes in the next book. Mallory was a bit of the typical popular girl, although at least she wasn't too mean. And she did have an important role to show that looks aren't everything.

To summarize: This was the first book I picked up by this author and it certainly won't be the last. Good Luck Charm is a fun and cute romantic read centered around the topic of luck. Kerri has a lot of bad luck and asks Connor to be her good luck charm after he helps her out. These two were so fun to read about, I liked seeing how they become friends and then slowly more. And I liked how both are great characters, Kerri is quirky and fun and Connor is really nice and sweet. The writing flowed smoothly and I had a lot of fun reading this book.

I enjoyed this one more than the first. For me I was able to connect with the characters better and I felt they were better fleshed out. For me the characters in the first were superficial but these two felt real. Their relationship, therefore, was more believable. Kerry was the quirky girl I expected and Conner was a sweetheart who I wished every teen girl could find and fall for. The story flowed well and at a good, believable pace.

As with all of Kellie’s stories it’s safe and light on the drama. A good read for young teens as they could really connect with the characters and their struggles.

I am not having the greatest luck at the moment with romance novels. This time, I gave YA contemporary romance a try, and as much as I loved this cover, I had issues with the contents.

I'll start off with the positives. Like I said, the cover is super cute, and I like the style across the series. I also liked the premise of a girl who believes she's cursed with bad luck. It gave me Just My Luck vibes, and I love me some old school Lindsay Lohan. (Also, hi, it had McFly in it, and I was BIG into McFly as a teenager.) I also liked that the heroine, Kerri, was an athlete, and for the most part, she and Connor for sweet together.

But, alas, what started with little niggles slowly built to more. It's about to get a bit spoilery, so don't continue reading unless you're fine with some of the plot being revealed! (That being said, the only surprises in the plot were when the characters did things to disappoint me.)

Kerri genuinely believed she had bad luck, and I could understand why. It started out as endearing, and there were some funny moments. But I felt like there was too much of her relying on Connor, and not nearly enough of her realising her own inner strength. There was barely any development there, and I think that was a damn shame. In the end, it didn't really feel like she'd learned anything, or that she wanted to be with Connor for him, not just use him for his "good luck".

Connor lost my approval in the course of a few chapters. The first blow was when he honestly had the following (summarised) thought pattern in the space of a few minutes of narration:

- I like Mallory, I should make my move
- Oh, Mallory is going out with someone else, and I can't compete
- I know, Kerri is my friend and likes spending time with me. Maybe there's something more there?

If that had happened slowly and with more transition, it would have been perfect. But the way he jumped from Mallory to Kerri made it seem like Kerri was a backup plan, his second choice. It seemed to flippant to me. Especially when he then dropped Kerri like she was hot as soon as she admitted to having a date with another guy, then had the gall to wonder why she wasn't contacting him. You were super rude, idiot!

The next blow came when he agrees to go with Mallory on a date. (We'll get to her in a second, because she was a disaster of a character...) During the course of the date, Connor internally remarked on Mallory's choice of music (pop), style, etc. He was very dismissive of things that were fancy (ok, fine), but also of anything girly. He compared Mallory and Kerri, and Kerri won out because she liked sports and eating buffalo wings. What did I get out of all that? All Connor wants in a girlfriend is a dude friend with girl parts. Girls are allowed to like the same things as guys, but I'm sick of the notion that liking "girly" things makes you lesser.

Ok, so now Mallory. Mallory was your Stereotypical Popular Mean Girl. There was nooooo nuance to her at all. She was stuck up, rude, and only concerned with looking good. She blamed everyone else for things when she did nothing to help the situation. And I felt sorry for her. Why? Because was clearly a cardboard cutout used as a plot device to make Kerri look like a better alternative, whilst also aiding Kerri in her using of Connor. #JusticeForMallory.

None of this was helped by the fact that the narration was pretty mediocre. The narrator clearly tried, but she wasn't as engaging to listen to or as good at multiple voices as other narrators I've listen to recently.

Ugh, I really wanted to enjoy this, and I feel extra bad because this was a review copy, but I just did not like this book. It had so much potential, but it fell down to stereotypes, femininity-bashing, and lack of character development and growth. It was just a bunch of confused teenagers using and hurting each other.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Good Luck Charm by Kellie McAllen | Book Review

STORY | A lucky charm is something Kerri O’Connor cannot survive without. Her lucky rabbit foot is never far from her, nor is her lucky sweatshirt, which she needs for every basketball meet. But then, her dad is involved in a freak car accident, and Kerri’s luck seems to change for the worse.

Then, she meets Connor Murphy, a fellow classmate who happens to be wearing the lucky sweatshirt her dad lost! In a series of “bad luck” events, Kerri becomes convinced Connor is her newest good luck charm. But unfortunately for her, Connor isn’t as sure as she is.

Reading this book is a cute experience, but for me, it isn’t a favorite “hidden gem” YA novel. There’s lots of fun happenings, and I like Kerri and Connor, but I don’t always love their journey of becoming an “us.” I think the “luck” trope goes a little too far away from reality, but do appreciate that it’s a read for St. Patrick’s day, and I suspect is all about having fun with its freedom in the March 17 bubble.

There’s a solid familial relationship for Kerri, and those who like sports will find the basketball portions of the story fun too. In the end, the book is short with an easy to fall into, fast-pace and of course, it's cute; and I do prefer this story over the previous valentine day themed romance. With a cute cover, a spunky heroine, and fun personality, Good Luck Charm is a nice weekend read for those looking for something without a great deal of commitment.

I was given an ARC copy of this.

I enjoyed this one too. However, I wasn't a fan as much in this one of Mia. It was like she was always too busy with her boyfriend to bother with her friend. I did like Connor and was glad that he finally came to his senses about Mallory. I just hope in the next book Jake is more likable. I get he's a prankster but sometimes he takes it too far.

I loved this story. It is funny and romantic, with teen angst and crushes, but also covers real life, as it deals with a family that pulls together when facing problems. There is also superstition, practical jokes, romance, and competition, and other problems encountered in high school. Another story by Kellie McAllen that keeps moving her up on my favorite author list. Her characters are charming, with their quirks and joys, or so irritating that I know they will reappear to reveal more of their story.

Good Luck Charm by Kellie McAllen a lucky charm of a five-star read. This is the second book in the Holiday High series and this time it’s the chance of Kerri ‘Killer’ O’Connor Basketball star extraordinaire and she may be a star on the court but deep down she believes that the only reason she is a star is due to her good luck charms, as Kerri has some of the worst luck possible. She really belies that she needs all of the good luck charms she can get her hands on, rabbits foot, horse shoe, a lucky shirt her dad wears to get games, and a lucky shirt of her own, when she realises that she doesn’t it on her game day bad things happen It just so happens to be Friday the 13th. Can a boy be a lucky charm as well? That’s what Kerri starts to think when new boy Connor Murphy turns up wearing a shirt she thinks is lucky. He just thinks it’s cool as it has his name on it. But what happens when the luck runs both ways? Can you find more than luck with a lucky charm?
This was a great story of friendship and love, love of friends, family and first love. We all do crazy things and we all wonder about life, Kerri has her reasons for feeling unlucky and as you read her story you will understand why she needs them and you will fall in love with the red headed girl with some great talents and some funny ways of thinking.
Kellie McAllen is a great writer, I have fallen in love with this series and can’t wait to read the next book in the series April Fools’ Joke, I think it may also be time to sink my teeth into one of Kellies other series, the choice is which one to start with, if you get to the bottom of this and have a recommendation please let me know.

Total Score: 5/5

Summary:
Kerri has always thought that Bad luck ruins her life causing her to do anything to prevent it form getting worse. The night of her big game she was having difficulty until she saw her father arrive in his lucky shirt thus saving the day. While in reality it was the new boy in school, Connor, who was wearing a shirt his mother had bought for him at the Goodwill. It just happened to really be her father's shirt that he had lost. The coincidence is astounding, but Kerri's reaction to get the shirt back was even more so. That is just the beginning of a friendship that began as Connor becomes her lucky charm keeping Kerri from her bad luck. That may sound crazy, but add to that Connor's crush on another girl while their friendship takes off becomes even trickier.

This was a trip back to high school with all the difficulties of popularity, friendship, and love interests mixed together in one incredibly funny story. I loved how Kerri's brothers ate them out of house and home and one was even willing to date Connor just to eat his food. Their overbearingly protective attitudes towards anyone interested in her, except for Connor, was hysterical. Connor's willingness to go alone with Kerri's nutty ideas when he was mooning over someone else made his real feelings obvious to every expect himself and Kerri thus upping the humor for everyone.

I was really looking forward to reading this book. Kerri was my favorite character from the previous book, so I was happy to get to know her better. The characters were fun and felt real, except for Mia and Austin from the previous book. Their PDA is always ridiculous. Kerri and Connor's romance was sweet and slow, the only aspect that felt contrived were the ways to get Connor to be her good luck charm. One thing that made this a really great, different read for me was Connors point of view. It was refeshing to have a guys take when he obviously is going after the wrong girl but doesn't realize it. Most of the books I have read with this type of situation are the girl can't understand why the guy likes a horrible girl, but he comes to his senses for the HEA, with no understanding of why he liked her in the first place and what changed his mind.

The only 'problems' with this book were Kerri seemed different. In My Fake Valentine she seemed like someone who dressed slightly outrageously, but it seems like she lives in sports themed clothes for this one. I don't know if it has to do with basketball season or what. And the ending felt rushed and out of place. I don't know why all the teens in this school just immediately have nearly X-rated make out sessions in front of everyone the second they find out the other likes them, but it's getting gross and old.

This is the second book in the Holiday High series and I liked it better than the first.

We met Kerri in the first book, she is Mia’s best friend, but Connor was new (to us and the school).

Kerri had really bad luck, like unbelievably bad luck, but then Connor comes around and when he is with her, her luck isn’t so bad.

I liked this book better than the first because I liked both Kerri and Connor (if you remember, I did not like Austin. And the little he is in this book confirmed my opinion).

Kerri is just trying her best to get by. Though she blames her bad luck when things going wrong, she is always looking for good luck charms. Like her sweatshirt, rabbits foot, and the horseshoe above her door.

Connor is the new kid at school, again, and just wants to play basketball and make a couple friends. He becomes Kerri’s friend and good luck charm.

Kerri’s family is great. They welcome Connor right in and include him in the family. The family is close-knit and protective of each other.

I love the friendship that Kerri and Connor form throughout the book. Since the first step to a relationship is knowing each other.

Overall a great book and makes me want to read the next one!

Another fantastic sweet romance comedy. This book is laugh out loud funny, but also a really nice story of friends, romance and navigating life and relationships at high school. We first met Kerri in the Holiday High book one (My Fake Valentine), as the quirky best friend. We get to know and understand her better in this book, and the vital part that luck and superstition plays in her day to day life! Connor is new to the area and the high school and is yet again trying to make new friends, and trying to build up the confidence to ask out the girl he is attracted to, but as the story continues, will he realise that looks aren’t everything and someone that is a friend and his match in every way is actually the girl for him.

I highly recommend this book, and I am looking forward to the next instalment with April Fool’s Joke coming soon!!!

Kellie McAllen at her best again... I enjoyed the first book in this series and this second one is just as good....In a lot of this authors books she can make you believe it’s a YA self help book, as to me a lot of her stories always have this underlying feeling that if her fictional characters can get through, then why can’t you, that’s how much reality this author can instill into you....This storyline had a great supportive family around the main character, but even with that, it didn’t stop the insecurities mounting. uncertainty, self doubt, self blame, and heartache alongside loyalty, belief, love, friendship and much more, bought these very real emotions so much reality that you felt them as your own......Also I loved the bit of sass and Witt she had.... a good clean read, with romance not at the fore front but definitely kindling in the back ground.

I started off slowly reading this, in my spare time, a page here, a page there. I only got maybe 2 chapters in, in as many weeks. Then today I had the real urge to buckle down and read it. I remembered how much I love the first book from this series, so I had high hopes for it. good Luck Charm didn’t disappoint either. I finished reading it within a few hours and it was perfect. I loved Kerri, she’s relatable, funny, and a believable mix of girly and Tom-boy. The dialogue and thought process of the characters are accurate with actual high schoolers, and the whole story is believable and utterly relatable. I adored the book and adored Kerri and Conners relationship, and following it from beginning to end.

I really just adore these books. What's not to like? romance set around some of our favourite holidays of the year, heart-happy first love stories we wish could be our first stories!

Good Luck Charm picks up after my Fake Valentine in the same setting moving from a focus on Mia and Austin to Kerri and Connor. Kellie McAllen, again, nails totally relatable and lovable young characters that make you root for them in every way possible.

I actually think I liked the story of this book better than the first because it is focused around an unexpected "love" holiday, St . Patrick's day. I found the story to be unique and fulfilling which is all you can ask for really.

Again I left excited for the next in this series!!!!!!!!!

'A funny, dorky, mood reading series you will come to adore.'

'Good Luck Charm' picks up right where 'My Fake Valentine' leaves us. (In my opinion you can read the books lose if you want, but it is better to read them in order)

I hoped that there be more after 'My Fake Valentine' and that actually happened and it made me so happy! Once again Kellie goes full out with sticking to a festive feelings. I never heard of an idea for a book series with a theme like this. It makes it more amazing.

Personally my country doesn't do much about St Patricks day, but this story really made me hope they did. As a sometimes unlucky person myself I love this book.

I liked the book overall, I like how Kellie writes and I also like high-school stories. Kerri is adorable with the attempt to fight with bad luck. It is almost too much, but knowing where it comes from, I fully can understand her. I'm glad she has a book on her own, because she is a real heroine, strong and capable, and not only the tiny mouse best friend of the popular girl. Connor is a real nice guy, however a bit blind :))) It is nice how he goes with the flow.
I would have loved the ending to be a bit more explained from both sides, so I miss things, but still it was very nice.

A charming read!

Connor is Kerri’s good luck charm...
But is he lucky enough to win her heart?

A story about bad luck and good luck charms. A story about finding love. A story about overcoming your bad luck.

Absolutely adored this fun, flirty read that has wonderful characters, especially the hero, and has a perfect ending to this charming read.

So many elements I loved that made it relatable to the real world - finding it in you to believe yourself is the most important and I loved how it was handled.

Full of bad luck, good luck charms, family, drama, uncertainty and a fun, flirty romance.

Perfect for readers of contemporary romances.

I love this book and not just because Mallory is a red head and very unlucky a lot like myself. I really loved the all the characters in the story not just Mallory and Connor. I loved how Kellie included little things in the story to really show Mallory's Irish background. It really is a cute, fun story where the characters grow into there relationship instead of the insta love. It's also nice to see the average girl end up with the average, even though he is exceptionally wonderful, guy. I really did enjoy this book and truly can not wait to read more in this sweet, fun series.

Be My Good Luck

I have enjoyed reading about Kerri and Connor. Boy, I would not want to relive those high school days not that mine were bad. Kerri doesn't even know how cool she is and poor Connor hasn't got a clue. Let me take that back about Connor he has a clue but still does not know what to do. This mash up of characters has kept the story on it feet with the absolute zaniness of school and home life.

Even though this is a more YA book I really enjoyed the story. You are never to old to think back to your school days with tears, laughter and some fear on occasion.

She is very superstitious and when everything goes bad on Friday the 13th she is sure she is proven right. Things get even worse. Her dad gets into an accident. In walks this hot guy who brings her luck. He wants her and agrees to hang around and help her. She likes him but is convinced he likes someone else. Now he has his work cut out for him to get her to know it is her he wants. This is fun, amusing, hot, exciting and so much more. I was given a review copy and voluntarily review it.

My fifth read/listen from author Kellie McAllen. No fantasy this time, instead another real-life story of teens and the challenges of friends, dating & growing up in high school. If you’re old enough think of all the Eighties movies in this setting. From the opening pages to the inevitable conclusion this excellent story thoroughly entertains, a nice touch was including characters from the first book in this series. So well-written with wonderfully engaging characters and a storyline that anyone who lived through high school can relate to. I’ll definitely be reading more from Kellie McAllen.

Kerri constantly has bad luck. Her dad is usually her good luck charm, but he is in an accident and can't be at her basketball games. How will she take her team to the finals if she doesn't have her good luck charm? Then she meets Connor. When he is around her luck changes ever time. Connor is a good guy, but he has his limits. After obsessing over another girl for a long time, he finally is realizing just how special Kerri is. But, does she see him only as a good luck charm or could there be more between them?

This is Good Luck Charm, book 2 of The Holiday High series written by Kellie McAllen. This is a sweet little teenage book and I really liked it. The characters are sweet and totally relatable. You will be wanting to shake them both before you get to the end. It’s a tale of secret “like” and lucky charms and basketball....lots of basketball. ;-)

A sweet story about a girl’s high school basketball player who believes the only reason she is successful at the game is due to a good luck sweatshirt and the boy who was wearing it. She eventually finds her feelings for him grow into something more. Her dilemma is knowing he has feelings for someone else. It’s interesting to find how she deals with her dilemma and also how the boy responds. This is a great young adult story I can easily recommend to youth of all ages.

Kellie McAllen’s Good Luck Charm (the second of her Holiday High Series books) is, quite simply, fun. It’s very much character focused but the characters here, Kerri, the “kooky girl with the crazy superstitions” and so sweet Connor, who she decides is her “lucky charm”, are just superbly done and a true pleasure to follow along. Totally relatable while totally outlandish. Hard to pull off but well done here.

Highly recommended.

A charming and fun read! I enjoyed this "bubble gum" book. If you want to get away to that awkward, happy, sad, scared, passionate place that is high school, this is the story for you.

It was nice to touch base with other charming characters from book one [Mia and Austin from My Fake Valentine (Holiday High Series Book 1)] but it was a fresh story with new people to fall in love with.

Do I recommend Good Luck Charm? Yes, I definitely do!
