ah this novel explains why Katsuya is the way that he is in the main story. he has severe daddy issues

The drawings are beautiful, but the writing is very simple.

🇩🇪Offensichtlich ist der Inhalt dieser kurzen Story ein bisschen fragwürdig. Es ist alles andere als eine fröhliche Geschichte, die einen bitteren Nachgeschmack hinterlässt.
Allerdings mag ich die Ernsthaftigkeit mit der daran gegangen wurde.
Diese kurze Story hat meinen Blick auf die Charaktere von In these Words nochmal ein bisschen beeinflusst. Ich war außerdem sehr überrascht. "No Way! Kotobuki auch?!" Hätte ich niemals erwartet.
Mit dem Anfang von In these Words hatte ich ja schon einen Vorgeschmack wie die Story in Textform rüberkommt. Und ich bin alles andere als enttäuscht. Ich weiß nicht wieso, aber ich bin verliebt in den Schreibstil. Die Umstellung von Manga auf Text finde ich überhaupt nicht schlimm. Von mir aus könnte die Main Story auch nur in Schriftform sein. Vielleicht entwickele ich auch einfach gerade eine Vorliebe für Drama.

This short story influenced my view of the characters of In these Words a little bit. I was also very surprised. "No way! Kotobuki too?!" I never expected it.
With the beginning of In these Words I already had a foretaste of how the story would be in text form. And I'm anything but disappointed. I don't know why, but I'm in love with the writing style. I don't think the switch from manga to text is bad at all. As far as I'm concerned, the main story could just be written too.
Or maybe I'm just developing a little love for drama.

Aufmachung
Der Schreibstil ist einfach, flüssig und bildhaft. Zwischendrin sind Illustrationen, die das geschriebene untermalen, zu finden. Ich liebe den Zeichenstil sehr. Er ist düster, kantig und geht in eine realistische Richtung.
Protagonist
Katsuya ist schlau und ein guter Schüler einer renommierten Privatschule. Doch seine Eltern ließen ihn im Stich, wodurch eine leere in ihm bleibt.
Fazit
Nachdem Maybe Someday die jungen Jahre Shinoharas betrachtet, ist Undertow ein Ausschnitt von Katsuyas Jugend und seinem rebellischen und verantwortungslosen Teil in ihm. Irgendwie bin ich dadurch aber nicht wirklich schlauer aus ihm geworden. Die Story hatte auch nicht so viel zu bieten. Sagen wir es war interessant, aber hat mich jetzt nicht umgehauen.
Was Mich etwas gestört hat war, dass der S*x hier in einem seltsamen Fokus stand. Aber wer weiß, vielleicht durchschaue ich diesmal auch den Sub Text nicht.
Wenn ich es jetzt mit Maybe Someday vergleiche, dann stinkt Undertow leider ein klein wenig ab. Aber da mich das In these words Universe fasziniert, werde ich hier nicht mit dem Lesen der Prequels etc. aufhören und bin gespannt, was da sonst noch so geboten wird.

Katsuya's daddy issues and feeling pain to feel something has me crazy for this novella. I would love more background stories on Katsuya, especially during his Harvard years. Heck, maybe some tidbits of his childhood, academic years, and so forth, just to see where he came from and who were really his friends and family.

A prequel to 'In the Words,' this short story provides depth into the life of Asano Katsuya. I would not recommend reading it if you haven't first read the series. This short story is well-written and the plot heart-wrenching at times.

The writing is very simple, the story itself is another kind of rape-excerpt which quality-wise remains far behind the original manga "In These Words".
