Jane Waleski and her best friend, Emily Zuckerman, are average achievers on a good day and losers on a bad day, but they're quite proud of it! Or so they convince themselves. They read only the shortest books for book reports and always have the worst project for science class. On top of that they are hopeless romantics. So Jane and Emily form Loser Club: an exclusive club of two. But when a new science teacher shows up at their school, Jane tries to impress her and suddenly finds herself trying to be not so average. Will she have to resign as vice president of Loser Club?
I got into writing novels by a dare. I've always loved reading about strong female characters in books, but it's hard to find LGBT characters, so I decided to take it upon myself to become a wordsmith. My works may not be the most professional or grammatically correct, but I'm not an English major, I just want to share a story. I like to think of myself as a writer version of a mad scientist. I don't stick to one genre as I might or might not have a monkey in my mind. So far, my books are supernatural, science-fiction, fantasy, chicklit, and a bit of dystopian, steampunk, and historical fiction.
I’m giving this book a 5-star rating because the characters in it are so real. They act like teenagers do; suffer from peer pressure and do stupid things and bully and hurt each other. I wanted to shake the MC a bunch of times, but teens do make stupid decisions and sabotage themselves and worry about fitting in and looking good in front of people who are only “friends”. It’s a difficult age to get right and the author did it superbly.
The romance in the story was a bit lukewarm, but as they’re young, a lot of passion would be unrealistic. It seems to be more along the lines of liking someone back who likes you rather than an earth-shattering love, which works in the story. Another odd but cool thing is there is no homophobia or heteronormativity in this universe. The MC is hesitant to approach the girl and gets teased mercilessly, not because of the fact they’re both girls, but other issues.
Jane’s mother is awesome, and for some reason I totally pictured Lucy as Luna Lovegood.
