I am unhealthily obsessed with this book.
To preface this review, I've never played games or enjoyed E-sports, ever in my life. Yet, I picked up this almost 2000 chaptered and 6 million character long book. And since that faithful day I couldn't put it down. I was reading it on the bus, at the bus stop, on my toilet breaks... in bed till 6AM in the morning, repeatedly, which I thoroughly regret, but also don't.
Despite it's overwhelming length, I never felt bored, annoyed or irritated. As I read on, I just found myself getting sucked deeper into the world the author created, becoming more invested with the characters and just admiring the fact that even 1000 chapters in, the author's work continued to remain refreshing, unpredictable and compellingly pageturning.
The King's Avatar focuses on the life of a professional gamer who falls from glory and has to build his own team and career from the bottom up all from scratch. I loved how the book focused on the characters' journeys, and their single minded pursuit of Glory. The story featured no romance or drama, and simply captured the passion, dedication and intelligence of athletes in any competitive sport.
I highly, highly recommend this book in either its translated or native form. It's an absolute jewel and one of my favorite things I've read this year.

** This review is a bit long because the book is just too good **
The King's Avatar, also known as Quan Zhi Gao Shou (全职高手) is a Chinese novel written by 蝴蝶蓝; Hu Die Lan also known as Butterfly Blue. This novel is very popular to the point that it even has it's own anime and drama series.
I am a bit excited to write this review that I took days to complete this and publish it. After I finished reading the English translated one in webnovel (FINALLY! it is complete), I had to re-read some parts because I wanted to showcase how clever the author wrote this novel through the characters especially through the protagonist, Ye xiu.
After I read the authors note at the end, I found out that the author took three years and two months writing this novel (from February 28, 2011 - April 28, 2014). And it is truly a masterpiece if I say so myself.
I started reading this novel June 3 2018 (according to the timestamp on webnovel - there is one, you have to check. LOL) and it took me 1 year, 4 months, 18 days to finish it while simultaneously waiting for the translations to come out. It really tests your patience to wait for the translated chapters (patience which I don't have a lot of btw. HAHA) but I am really thankful to the translators for the effort to update each and every chapter. I did try to read the raws several times using google translate, but I got headaches trying to figure out which character they were talking about. (Try it, you could get an overall picture of what's happening, but not that clear.)
TKA is the first ever Chinese novel I have ever read. My brother was the one who recommended it. He first gave me the anime which I was hesitant to check out at first but the plot just got to me. A pro-player forced to retire and wants to comeback to face-slap people along the way? Count me in! The anime also had very good graphics and they stayed true to the story which is very important. Then when I got frustrated because the anime was just too short, he told me it was a novel which I immediately delved into. And so that was the start of me reading Chinese novels...
To my surprise, it was really good. To the point I was binge reading over a hundred chapters a day, sometimes even with no sleep. LOL And until I got to the latest translated chapter, I re-read it again. Several times over. Again, it was just too good, superb, outstanding, terrific! :')
The TKA novel revolves around an online competitive game called Glory. Ye xiu, is a pro-player in his mid twenties to which others view as old and in his "twilight years" in the pro league. Which is why at the start of the novel, he got stripped of his position and account card and was forced to retire from the game he gave years of his life for.
"If you like it, then treat this all as glory, and not as boasting."
What follows after that are his struggles and hardship (if you can call it that) in starting over from scratch in hopes of making a comeback. Practically the whole novel is about it, but you have to read it all to witness the ingenious and brilliant ways he came up with to reach his goals.
I wanted to go into detail for the characters, but there are too many. I'll just stick with our protagonist, Ye Xiu.
Ye Xiu/ Ye Qiu. A top tier pro-player, known to many as textbook of Glory and known as one of the Four Master Tacticians. His most proficient class is a Battle mage, but he can play any class.
I never thought I would get to love a shameless character until I read this novel. He isn't really proud or arrogant, he is just too good at what he does that it can make others speechless (even Huang Shaotian. HAHA). He also makes a lot of people angry because he is too straightforward and sarcastic which make up several funny chapters in the novel.
"We don't need a Cleric." Ye Xiu said.

The previously lively Endless night went speechless.

Endless Night just stood there like a statue and saw the party go into the dungeon.
He has also face-slapped several people without doing it deliberately. He just really plays his game too good and even in the most frustrating times, he remains calm and patient.
Ye Xiu is also the only one who can call several captains their nicknames because of his seniority over most of them. Also a moderator in the pro-player chat group which is a must read chapter. One of my favorites. LOL
"Did they hear that correctly? He didn't say he wasn't able to, he only said he'd have trouble."
One thing I really liked about Ye Xiu is that he never says something is impossible. In his mind, he probably would have several ways to counter something or to do something. And even if it seems impossible to some, he would give his two cents and try.
From starting over, to leveling up, to collecting materials and stealing bosses, he would have several amazing ideas. Then from playing one on one to leading 5-players, 10-players, 20-players to a hundred players dungeon, he would have several tactics in play, really eye-opening and brilliant ways that would leave you in awe.
This novel has 1728 chapters in total. And all chapters are a must read. you wouldn't want to miss anything, and I really mean any ingenious play he has hidden in his sleeves.
And if you are dismayed of the 1728 chapters, please don't. I promise you that you will love it. The novel is fun to read and very entertaining. It will make you laugh, cheer on the teams, and make you cry too.
This novel is perfect for those who like fantasy, action, and comedy. Even more if you like gaming and e-sports.
Let me share some of my favorite parts of the novel below.
One of my favorite parts in the novel is when he tells people he is Ye Qiu, which they didn't believe.
"Brother, you're not kind! Did you trick us by using a guide?"
I wouldn't. I wrote that guide." Ye |Xiu said.
"Who wrote that guide?" (Endless Night asks his guildmate)
"One Autumn Leaf"
"What are you boasting for. That guide was written by the God Ye Qiu."
"Right, that's me!"
The greatest BOSS in all of Glory.
"After dinner, there'll be one more practice." Wang Jiexi announced to the entire team.
"What practice?"
"Kill a BOSS." Wang jiexi said.
"BOSS? What BOSS?"
"The greatest BOSS in the history of Glory." Wang Jiexi said.
...
"Our target, the player Lord Grim. Everyone, don't be careless. It's very likely that this player is the retired Ye Qiu." Wang Jiexi announced the purpose of their added practice.
....
"You're not afraid these children are going to be mentally traumatized?" Ye Xiu said.
And there are a lot more of moments like these. Just pick up the novel, I assure you that you won't regret it. :)
A Million Glory-fied, amazing, brilliant, fantastic, ingenious STARS
This is truly a masterpiece of a novel. My hats off to the author.
*Currently, the anime is set to have a season 2, and the movie is also set to realease this November in several South East Asia theaters. The Chinese drama is available to watch on Netflix, I am not sure though if they will continue? For the novel, the main novel is complete in webnovel. The translators are currently uploading the prequel side stories to this novel. Hopefully the author can also continue the novel cause I really want to see that China team play. :D *.
And as a reader, I would like to thank the several translators who worked together to finish the translations, cause without them, I would have died of blood-loss from all the nosebleeds in reading through google translate. LOL And to note, the translators started to translate and publish it at webnovel April 18 2017 until October 21, 2019. That is 2 years, 6 months, 3 days excluding the end date. My hats off to all of you.

¡Jo, me ha encantado!. Y eso que era farragosón de leer y no porque fuera un compendio de 13 tomos, casi 1800 capítulos (que de todos modos se leía con soberano placer), sino porque había una cantidad ingente de personajes (leí por ahí que unos 1700 personajes, no sé si será verdad (pero que me parezca siquiera posible que sea cierto, ya te da una idea de su número), y ninguno está de relleno, a todos los tienes que conocer, tanto en su aspecto, como su personalidad, como en su estilo de juego y el aspecto y características de su avatar principal en el juego) con nombres chinos parecidídimos, que además tenías que identificar junto a sus personajes en el juego (ya que la trama se desarrolla paralelamente en el mundo real y en los diferentes recovecos de un inmenso juego online, afectándose unos a otros constantemente) con nombres, estos últimos, que tan pronto aparecían en inglés, como en español. Para más INRI algunos personajes cambiaban a avatares diferentes en el juego cuando querían hacer alguna pifia que no querían que relacionaran con su personaje más conocido. Así que un mismo personaje tan pronto era Ye Qiu, como Ye Xiu, como una hoja de otoño, como An Autumn Leaf (Ah, y como los avatares pueden ser transferidos, de pronto Una hoja de otoño no describía lo que hacía Ye Qiu -Ye Xiu sino lo que hacía Sun Xiang), como Lord Grim, como otra serie de nombres de diferentes avatares que cambiaban cuando les convenía (entre los cuales, algunos tenían nombres graciosos que te facilitaba recordarlos, al menos). Así que cuando te habías aprendido los chorrecientos nombres de los personajes reales (en chino) y los de sus chorrecientos avatares (en inglés y español indistintamente)... decidían hacer no sé qué zurdada y se cambiaban de avatar para no ser reconocidos y están 5 tipos hablando y maquinando en el juego con 5 nombres nuevos y ya no recuerdas quién es quién ahora y qué está haciendo. Así que me pasé los 13 tomos apretujados en uno, consultando con Google quién era quién, cada poco.
Pero no me importó. Porque me lo pasé bomba. Pero qué requetebién que se lo puede pasar una cuando lee algo que es incapaz de dejar!. Absorbente es quedarse corta.
A pesar de su abrumadora extensión era incapaz de dejarlo. Pensaba en él hasta cuando caminaba o compraba patatas. Acortaba las conversaciones con los demás, para correr de vuelta a la lectura con una ilusión que no recuerdo haber sentido desde que abría la nevera de pequeña y descubría que abuelita por fin se había animado a hacer tarta de chocolate y empezaba a maquinar formas de llevarme un pedazo sin que se notara en la tarta que faltaba un trozo.
Y el caso es que no sobraba ni una coma. Cuanto más leía, más quería leer, más inmersa estaba en todo ello y más difícil me resultaba parar.
Trágicamente, todo tiene su fin, menos la charla de tía Paci al teléfono, y el libro acabó tan bien cerrado, que cualquier cosa que le añadan sólo lo estropearía. Así que se acabó. Pero creo que lo voy a releer. Así, nada más terminarlo. Os dije que me había gustado muchísimo?.

Let me start off by saying that if you asked me to rate this book out of 10, I'd give it 10/10. If you asked 100, I'd give 100/100. 1000/1000.
The King's Avatar (Quan Zhi Gao Shou, author: Butterfly Blue) recounts the story of Ye Xiu, a professional e-sports player of the game Glory, who has been kicked out of his team despite being the most talented and successful, the creme-de-la-creme of Glory. He is hailed as the God, the Undisputable Glory Textbook, the Master Tactician, the Battle God, the Three Time Champion and the Captain of Ten Years to a team he created with his own gifted hands. One cold winter night, this team abandons him and he decides to start anew, climb his way to the championships and win the much desired golden trophy - one more time. He's done it all before, there is nothing that can faze the Glory Textbook; but the difference? This time, he's starting from ground zero.
Our protagonist is as witty as he is infuriating, as shameless as he is intelligent. His ultimate desire is to win the highest accolade of Glory, and underneath that desire are flames of passion and an unyielding, optimistic attitude. A theme common throughout the book is the emphasis on teamwork. Glory is not meant to be played alone is his credo and we see this theme manifesting whenever a battle is lost or a war is won.
The characterisation of every single person is absolutely mind-blowing. The timeline covers 3 years from chapter 1 to chapter 1728, but it is worth the read. There was never a moment when I thought that a text was repetitive or an idea was banal. Ye Xiu's mind is like a complexly woven spiderweb, and the challenges that he faces are arduous, which only means that boring is a far-fetched adjective. The book, the storyline, the characters are addictive and will leave you unable to refuse reading. Be it arrogant masters or naive newcomers, trash-talkers or sweet sycophants, stubborn young men or haughty young women, proud achievers or sore losers - QZGS has it all.
Lastly, not only has Hudie Lan (author, aka Butterfly Blue) written a resplendent novel, the morals that we can imbibe from Ye Xiu and co. are endless. Perseverance, diligence, faith in your team, a victorious mentality, the essence of what it means to be the best, to be unwavering in achieving your dreams, as scandalous as they may be - all of this, and much more, is what makes up the heart of The King's Avatar, and at the very core of it is a fallen God, with no home, no food, no money - only his skills and a dream to fulfil.
1728 chapters is all it takes for him to get his glory back.
(Special note) The translators of QZGS have my greatest reverence. Were it not for them, we'd have never found this book, and I'd hate to live in a universe where I have not read The King's Avatar.

Go Happy! Go God Ye Xiu!
The King's Avatar is one of the best works that I've read in regards to e-sport/games. The focus is purely on the game, the team and teamwork, there's no romance (what a change). Top tier pro-player Ye Xiu is kicked off his team, but Glory (the game) is still his passion, and he starts anew and finds teammates within the game. There are certainly parts that can feel a bit repetitive, but that's the nature of pro e-sport; matches and games are repeated with different teams with the same or different outcomes. Nevertheless the story is very compelling and a true pageturner that is somewhat unpredictable. As a character Ye Xiu is direct, shameless and hilarious, there's also ample of development for the other characters. I laughed a lot while reading this, especially when the other characters were quite frustrated with Ye Xiu's antics.
It's a real shame that this did not continue onto the international scene, that would have been excellent. I'm also very curious about Ye Xiu's family, that would have been something interesting to explore too.

One thousand seven hundred and twenty eight chapters.
By far the longest book I've ever read, and yet there was not a single moment where I wasn't excited while reading. The pace of the story did not lag at all, steady and gripping throughout from the start to the end.
It really feels like I had been dragged through the story, forced to experience what the characters did, and I've come out feeling exhilarated yet sad that it ended. (Really, I can read another 1000 chapters, no problem!)
Ye Xiu, as the top-tier player in the world renown esports game Glory, has numerous titles in his illustrious 7 year career. Glory Textbook, Master Tactian, Battle God, Captain of the only team to win 3 consecutive championships... yet for some reason, he is kicked out by that very team.
Even though he is nearing the end of his time as a professional player, Ye Xiu decides to restart from scratch to return to the professional scene - for the glory, for the victory, and for the promise to an old friend. And really, the whole journey from start to end is worth reading!
Hilarious, surprising, mind-blowing - the friendship dynamics in this story are beautiful to read, the rivalry keeps you on the edge of your seat and the battles? The battles take the cake!
If anyone can write action scenes the way Hudie Lan has, it will be the highest praise I could give them! Not a single moment of the action scenes feel dragged out or boring or lack luster. It packs a punch, it builds suspense, and it also knows when to pause to give the readers a break.
Really, for being so thoroughly entertaining from the beginning to the end, this one gets to be my favourite book of the year!

selama bulan februari cuma baca satu buku ini saja.
bukan karena minat baca kurang dan males baca buku lain, tetapi karena buku ini sangat tebel hingga butuh waktu satu bulan bacanya. tanpa skip atau brenti-brenti bacanya...
sekarang lagi baca ulang, tapi kali ini diseling ama buku lain..
suka dengan karakter-karakter di buku ini. saat baca ulangpun masih terkekeh-kekeh dengan para tokohnya, terutama Ye Xiu yang trash talking-nya udah masuk kelas dewa :)
sampe saat ini, The King's Avatar ini masih menjadi buku terbaik yang saya baca sepanjang tahun 2020 ini..

Yes, I can already see everyone running away at top speed at the sheer number of chapters. But if you're willing to give this a chance, and are interested in a humorous slice of life book with a great ensemble cast you can read for the long-term on your daily commute, this can really put a smile on your face.
The book follows the fall of Ye Xiu, a professional eSports gamer who got kicked out of his old club in favor of a hot new star Sun Xiang, and Ye Xiu's subsequent rise to re-join the world of professional gaming with a new character and new team. If you've ever played an MMO or MOBA - the fictional game Glory! is like a MMOBA hybrid mixed with a fighting game - you'll find a lot of relatable gaming moments in the book. If you're not a gamer or into the eSports genre, a lot of my non-gamer friends who've read this book say that they enjoyed it regardless because they loved the characters. I personally loved the strategic aspects of the game, and the mental battles and the tricks and schemes, but I know others skim the gaming descriptions and just focus on the character interactions out-of-game as well.
In the genre of "OP protagonist rises to the top," it's really common for a book to completely lose all sense of suspense because the protagonist never loses. TKA overcomes that very skillfully by mixing wins with losses, and making the protagonist work for his wins. Yes, he's pretty overpowered, but he doesn't win through sheer power difference, but a mix of strategy and shamelessness. I literally spent a whole weekend reading the Challenger League arc in this book because it was so suspenseful. All sports novel writers could take from tips from this book on how to do this right!
The novel is gen with lots of supporting and minor characters who are very likeable. I especially love the variety of female characters in this book, all of them are so great, and don't fall at all into the typical cliches (Tang Rou gets a special mention). My personal favorite is Huang Shaotian, competent blathering idiot extraordinaire. Bonus mention to Zhou Zekai, for being one of the best opponents to go head-to-head with Ye Xiu. Just pure competence and brilliant technique to read about when these two fight against each other.
Because the book is about competitive gaming, there's no real over-the-top villains as you would normally find in c-novels. The worst of them might be the overly cocky bullies in-game who serve as cannon fodder for Ye Xiu, or the people who sabotaged him with Excellent Era. But the most significant opponents that Ye Xiu encounters during competition are all friends outside the game, so there's always fantastic banter.
I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a "journey to success/journey to championships" story with fun characters, humor, heart-warming friendships and plenty of suspense & well-written competitions.

This book is really a guilty pleasure of mine.
It is not often that fiction based on sports or esports are made well, but this book is flowing with passion of towards the sub-culture. A wonderful world is made of the fictional esport "Glory" which is used to showcase the highs and the lows that players face in the world. The game that has been created is made clear to the viewer, with all of the things that the characters can do easily imagined, allowing the viewer to always guess and think about the next move that the characters could make to win a fight or get ever closer to that championship goal.
The character work is fantastic, each character has a fully realised personality with goals, flaws, struggles and reasons that they want to win. This could be the character wanting to prove themselves to the community, or it could be for the passion of the game that they have grown up with.
All of the work that has been done to make these previous points works together to create some of the most thrilling moments and battles that I have read in fiction for a while.
The pacing in this novel is bad... really bad. 1700+ chapters is far too many for any book, even if they are this short, and there are clearly parts of this which are filler, albeit forced by the way that these books are published in china.
This novel is translated from the original Chinese, and it is perfectly fine, but there are parts of the book that would have made much more sense had I been able to read the Chinese version and only some of the jokes come across well in the English release.
One of the biggest problems with the book is that you are often forced to read through tens of monotonous chapters before getting to the parts that are good, often times key points feel repeated and some of the fights that the characters have feel as though they could have been cut.
I recommend this book whole heartedly. Whilst the book has many flaws, the novel always comes through with it's emotional beats and creates a world of characters and events that feels like it could really exist. It captures the essence of esports and the community that follows it in a way that anyone will be able to appreciate.

In one of the reviews, there was a sentence that caught my eye: “I have an unhealthy obsession with this book”. It pretty much sums up my feelings as well, except it goes for the whole franchise, drama and animation included.

It's everything others have said and more -- yes, including being occasionally repetitive and having an overpowered MC.
The former barely detracted from the fun -- probably because I read it after it was all translated and so could skip however I liked. And I can sort-of understand why the writer felt the need to repeat themselves -- apart from the apparent word-count demands of web novels, this is really a long-ass book if that wasn't clear already. One with quite detailed world-building especially necessary for the gaming aspect, and sometimes hundreds of chapters away from details that can suddenly become relevant.
As for the latter, if you'd asked me before this book, what I thought of overpowered MCs, I'd've automatically said they're a sure sign of terribly written fiction. Now, my thoughts haven't much changed there but this book made me realize that with enough skill, even the worst tropes can be shaped into something awesome and beautiful.
(And if one really wanted to get technical, there's a decent argument to be made that Ye Xiu isn't truly OP -- not by the usual measures of such things. But that's by the way 🌚)
One thing that stood out in particular, a major reason the novel is such fun, is the way the writer was able to constantly switch POVs smoothly and completely occupy each one, reactions and all:
- One moment we're looking out from the eyes of the match commentator as he worries about getting "face-slapped" yet again in the coming match.
- A few paragraphs after, we're amidst the crowd of spectators as they watch an old enemy pace across the stage waiting to begin his match. They collectively consider how this enemy has in the past brought them the greatest sorrows but also the greatest joys and so half-heartedly boo him.
- Another paragraph and the match has begun. The two players have at it, and this time we get a gods-eye POV of the action. But we still drop into each player's POV as the battle progresses, or into the crowd's POV yet again as they facepalm when their player goofs on the screen. Or into the commentator's POV as he internally congratulates himself on yet another brilliant prediction of the players' strategies.
- The matches end and now we're amidst the e-sports reporters coyly asking the players questions about their performances, trying to provoke and get juicy bits for their headlines.
I probably explain it poorly but this complete masterful grasp of each scene elevated the entire experience for me. I haven't read a lot of Eastern fiction to tell if this is really common there but I know it's quite rare in Western, which tends to follow more structured patterns for POVs -- the closest you'll find is the 3rd-person POV that switches every chapter, or the omniscient POV that gets in everywhere but still stands aloof from each character. If I ever write a book, I'm definitely trying this out first.
I haven't even talked about the ridiculously good dialogue (and monologues!), that had me laughing half the time, if I wasn't grinning already.
And so much more I haven't the time to ramble about. Like many here, TKA was my first web novel, let alone Eastern, discovered after watching the Netflix drama, with no MMO experience whatsoever. And now it's one of my favourite pieces of fiction ever, by sheer dint of how much fun I had reading it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I loved watching this world get built up from beginning to end, as it felt like i was looking in on real characters in their day to day lives.
All the people that made appearances felt like we just happened to run into them on their trip and then we sent them on their way.
It felt like the steps he was taking to achieve his goal were naturally what should have happened. Whether it be going into the game and making a new character, or forming your team to try and compete, losing some matches during the season, or up to the very end (spoilers here lol). Everything that happened felt natural and organic, and none of this power of friendship bull shit. That alone helped me fully root for them til the end, as i felt like everything they achieved they deserved. The fact that i made it until the 1500's chapters without skipping any of it was honestly surprising to me.
It was refreshing cause i actually felt like i was looking in on a realistic Chinese society today.
But nothing is perfect and that's also where some of my problems lie with this one.
For example, if i have to hear one more time about someone not wanting to give their opinion out of fear of being wrong or else they'd get "slapped in the face", i will actually lose my shit
It really helped enlighten me on how something like Corona can spread like it has, because people there are so worried about appearances fear of being wrong.
Also i know he was just trying to flesh out SPOILER all the way til the end, but after a while i just got burnt out on the fights wanted to skip to the end. I didn't even read any of the actual fighting in the SPOILER because i was so burnt out at that point. But that was around 1600 chapters in so i should've expected that coming into it.
All in all though i absolutely loved this story. I will always think about where the road would have taken Ye Xiu and company next, as the author left it on a perfect note imo

I first picked up The King’s Avatar back in 2017, during my Uni finals. I had this one-week break between exams and thought I’d sneak in a book to relax... I ended up pulling all-nighters, reading until 6–7am, telling myself “just one more chapter.” This went on for at least two more days.
This book just hooked me. The world-building is great, but what really makes it shine are the characters and their relationships.
I mean, Ye Xiu is such a fascinating main character. The story is basically about him, and on paper he’s ridiculously OP (“overpowered”), which can easily make for a boring, flawless protagonist. But instead, he's turned out to be one of my all-time favourite characters. He's clever, creative, shameless (literally SO funny), passionate, caring... I could honestly keep going, that's how dimensional his character is.
And it’s not just him. Each teammate and even opponent has their own quirks and strengths, which makes the competitions and interactions so much fun to read (imo his interactions with other pro players is one of the best parts of the novel.)
What I love even more is that the author doesn't shy from showing their weaknesses. Our fav team doesn't win every round, and each victory or loss shows you what they still need to work on or how far they’ve come. It makes every match feel impactful and believable, and of course, really satisfying. I absolutely love Qiao Yifan's arc (#bestboy)
Also, there’s no romance between the main characters. And I LOVE that. The story doesn’t need it and it's always a relief to find a novel where there isn't like a harem around an OP guy.
Even years later, this is still one of my favourite reads. It’s funny, exciting, and full of heart. Absolutely worth the binge (just… maybe not in the middle of exams 😅).

OH MY GOD. This book is truly, absolutely, the most amazing piece of work I've read in the past few years. I rately write any reviews on books that I've read, but for TKA, I really can't resist. I just have to share this feeling of amezement.
Where to start? First off, the MC Ye Xiu. His character truly touched me. His stubborn never-back-down yet cunning nature, his belief on his and his team capability, his sentiment toward the game, his struggle on the way of being the champion, everything was written perfectly in the novel. The other characters are interesting as well, but no one, no one in this story would ever surpass Ye Xiu in my heart. This guy is truly the God of Glory.
The story itself was very detailed, I love how the writer slowly help us to understand the characters and the world of Glory. Although there are many in-game terms that you may need to look up sometimes if you're a complete noob at gaming like me, it didn't lessen the enjoyment I had when reading this book.
I cried, laughed, and screamed together with the characters. I think I could feel their pain, their struggle, their determination during their journey, to surpass their selves of today, to beat anyone in their way, to stand on the peak of glory.
Truly a masterpiece. I might revisit this story one day. Though it's super long, it was a fun ride. Glory to The King's Avatar!

Like LotR, yearly re-read. It is long.
You have to understand a few things about The King's Avatar.
1) This is a chinese LN, about the Chinese Esports scene. People retire and unretire, almost on a yearly basis. The "retirement" sometimes is just to get out of a bad contract, and the period they stay retired is them waiting out the lockout time period. It happens in China.
2) The Game "Glory" is an unrealistic videogame. It is based on Dungeon Fighters, however as a game. Glory would be nearly impossible to play.
3) People are going to ask /say the events that happen in chapter 1, cannot happen because terms of service. This gets answered later on in the story. I would say about 2/3rds of the way in. To spoil it, Teams bought out the accounts. That is why the events that start the story can happen. It's a story. It isn't meant to be super realistic.
4) There are a lot of idioms where the translation staff imo, didn't translate correctly. I understand that translation work is hard. You have to balance being word accurate, and spirit accurate. Still, there are issues with the translation in terms of both idioms and the "explaination" behind said idioms.
5) OP MC syndrome is fine here, it's well enough to be believable.
All in all. I enjoy the King's Avatar. If you are an avid gamer, who wants to have a feel good read. Give it a shot.

the main draw of this webnovel is esports, but the first 1,000~ chapters are meant to build up background of the characters and teams
and a portion of it is the MC trolling teams in the game and irl
the competition aspect starts way later and by then you would have more knowledge on the various teams and players (there's a lot). all the teams are unique in their playstyles and some are even opposites like one relies on solo mechanical skill vs another that relies on heavy teamwork/strategy
although it is a bit repetitive at times with descriptions, it is still worth reading

1728 Chapters, 3 months of reading ... oof! I never expected it to be this long. Started off from watching anime then parts of live action before I decided to just get the bloody book to read the complete story and boy did I get pulled into the whirlwind.
The length of the chapters made me cry and complain my frustration. However, the story had me hook, line and sinker that no matter how much i told myself "let's stop reading this never ending book" I just couldn't walk away from it. So, night after night, I laughed, cried, jumped in excitement, and also cursed at their shamelessness. I am glad I finished it. It was beautifully written and honestly the moral of the story or the take away from it is very empowering.
Question to ponder on: What glory am I striving for?
My many many thank yous to the author for bringing this gem to life and to the translators (Qidian International) for giving opportunities to people like me (who cant read chinese) to read and enjoy it.

A professional gaming novel that really delves into the nitty-gritty of game mechanism, in-game guild dynamics and professional gaming competition. Lots of technical descriptions about skill, item, positioning, and many other aspects of the game. But what really shines is the characters and their interactions with each other.
I absolutely love the main character! Ye Xiu is the kind of person that is capable of making other people vomit blood just by talking to them. The dialogue between characters are witty and hilarious, truly the standout point of this novel. Even the side characters are properly written, each of them have their own story and personalities, and none of them are simply cardboard characters. In short, if you're interested in reading a gaming novel at all, I would recommend reading this.

The King’s Avatar is about professional gamer Ye Xiu and his quest for Glory. Despite being one of the best players of the game Glory, he is forced into retirement and must leave behind his beloved character. He quickly gets a job as a manager at an Internet cafe right as a new server is opening on the game, providing him the opportunity to start over fresh. Ye Xiu will meet new and old companions and will completely shake up the game as he continues to strive for Glory.

This story may be massive at 1728 chapters and have an almost overwhelming number of characters, but I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. I read a spoiler for how it ended but that didn’t stop me from feeling anxious and excited as I read. If anything, it made me want to keep reading even more. Ye Xiu was on a quest, but I as a reader was on a journey and it. was. awesome.

Tak hluboce jsem klesnul, ze uz ctu Cinske webnovely... Kazdopadne suverenne nejdelsi vec co jsem kdy cetl, nejakych 1800 chapteru, zabralo me to nekolik mesicu (s dlouhou pauzou, tohle fakt nejde cist na jeden zatah). Je to fakt dobre napsane, narozdil od spousty knizek se kvalita s casem spis zvetsuje nez zmensuje. Kdyz zapocitam nezbytne skakani fluffu tak bych tomu dal neco mezi 4 a 4.5 - i kdyz bylo celkem od zacatku jasne jak to dopadne, tak to bylo fakt dobre napsane a bavil jsem se u toho hodne. Zvlast kompetitivni cast - i kdyz jak jsem psal je od zacatku jasne jak to dopadne, tak ty ups and downs jsou gradovane tak ze jsem u toho sedel cely napnuty. Netusim komu bych to doporucil ale me to bavilo nemalo, uz je to za mnou, diky za trpelivost Lenicko :P

Butterfly Blue definitely created a masterpiece with The King's Avatar! All the Glory details, for both the game and the competition are really amazing. The worlds, the maps, the classes, the characters, the skills, the techniques, the weapons. Everything is perfect. In addition to those, Butterfly Blue delivered a very good plot that is accompanied with topics and spirits like dreams, growth, professionalism, the passion for glory. All the players have their own unique interesting traits and specialties and there are many many good character developments! 1728 chapters and every chapter is worth to read. I'm really gonna miss reading this. It brought me laughs, tears, and joy! Thankyou Butterfly Blue, thankyou Nomyummi translation team, thankyou The King's Avatar!

I finally finished! I feel like my eyeballs are going to fall out after reading 9k pages non-stop lol. If you can get your hands on this, I recommend reading it all the way through! It's so funny and packed with action! The strategic moves that the characters make in the game and during the competitions were extremely captivating to watch (ahem, to read). There are also quite a few emotional parts, too 😭 There's a lot of character growth, relationships, and perspectives that give this world so much depth. Not even the side characters were left behind 😆 I don't play any MMORPG games, but it was really fun reading about pro-gamers and the in-game universe. I want to play Glory now. If only it existed in real life.

Over this 2020 year I've read a few extremely large online novels. This was the first one and it was awesome! I wasn't sure how I'd like a story about video games, but it was great! After I finished I was curious so i checked out more online novels and i keep reading them in my spare time because they're easily accessible on my phone. Anyways, about the series/book. I love the protagonist's personality. The characters around him have solid depth and the storyline progresses rather smoothly. If you enjoy overly powerful main characters then you will enjoy this story. It's not a masterpiece, but it's worth reading.

feel a little bit like this is cheating but who cares i spent two entire weeks doing nothing but marathoning this and it IS a book so here goes HAHA
v. technical it's about 99% gaming and strategy and ye xiu being an incomparable unbeatable god (of shamelessness) but with so many well developed and motivated charas, and some surprisingly poignant moments/interactions (ye xiu's quiet pain,,,;; plus fang rui, wu chen, qiao yifan...), i wanted more of this in the novel actually but the drama plugged up that gap nicely
fun and addictive read but with so much left over to guess at! qiao yifan i will love you forever and su mucheng/chu yunxiu are dating change my mind

First book ive ever read touching on esports, albeit a more fantastical version, that isnt transporting to the game world or the like. Extremely well written, with superb character development, not just the mc, his main team, but all the other teams, friends, rivals etc.., were all very well fleshed out. Great world building, fight descriptions too. Overall highly recommended.
