Sean and Kira are back! Their love and their bond are growing but so are their unique abilities. All of which are about to be put to the test when a desperate FBI agent contacts Kira to see if her skills, painting with the ashes of the deceased, might help him catch an elusive arsonist with a gruesome MO. Kira is puzzled by the strange request for the use of her new-found technique, but agrees nonetheless. Kira is struggling both with the direction her new business is heading, and the ramifications of her new love's growing powers of perception, but Sean's blossoming abilities may be all that stands between them and death by a remorseless fire-starter.
Born in New Orleans, JODY SUMMERS' life has been filled with unconventionality. The adopted son of a prominent Texas restaurateur, Jody grew up in New Orleans, Memphis and then Houston, learning the restaurant business while he built a career as a competitive gymnast that propelled him to a scholarship at the University of Kansas.
After college, Jody followed in his father's footsteps owning, at one point, three 24-hour restaurant franchises along with four tanning salons in Tulsa. Finally leaving that business, he turned his entrepreneurial skills to everything from a patent in the Pet Industry to a Single's website.
A restaurateur, a gymnast, a stunt man, an entrepreneur, a pilot, skydiver, scuba diver, and an accomplished martial artist for twenty-five years, Jody Summers has tried it all. Now he brings all those experiences to paper in his first novel, the romantic thriller, DARK CANVAS.
This took me awhile to finish, not because it was terrible, but simply because it just wasn't very captivating. I enjoyed Sean and Kira's interaction at times but a lot of the time I felt their relationship just wasn't genuine. I felt their relationship moved way too quickly and the chemistry between them just wasn't very realistic For example the scene where they have the conversation about Sean's growing irritation. He confessed to Kira his feelings about missing something. And she just happened to know exactly how to solve it. Airplanes. But of course! I just felt it wasn't too realistic. Yes they're a great couple, but even so their relationship dynamic just wasn't realistic. It was too...smooth all the time. I did quite like Poena. I found her actually really relatable. I felt bad for her in the end even if she had killed a lot of people. I actually liked her more than Kira and Sean! I also felt there was a lot of unnecessary information that made the story drag out a lot longer than it should have. I didn't really think Josh's character was necessary in the story. I didn't really care about him honestly. I believe Kira and Sean's own investigation of Poena would have built more tension and the climax would have been more interesting were they to know of Kira's relation earlier in the novel. Overall although the story was well written, it lacked the excitement that made me want to stay up at night to finish that one last chapter.
*I also would have enjoyed more interaction between Sean and Aubrey although maybe that will be covered further in a future novel.
I recieved this book as part of a GoodReads Giveaway. First I would like to say if I could give this a 3.5 I would, the only part that kept it from being a 4 star was the sex, which I don't like in any book. I read the first in the series so I would be familiar with the story and my biggest problem was that is moved extremely slowly up until almost the very end. I also was not a fan of the sex scenes as I found them to be mainly unnecessary to the plot. This book moved much faster from the beginning, which I appreciated, however there was still a lot of unnecessary points that made it drag along as well as a lot of errors that could have been fixed by having a good editor. For instance, Aubrey's age is written as 60 in one chapter then a few chapters later it says he is 72, even though no time has passed. Also, Sean's real name is different in this book than it was in the first, and Detective John's girlfriends name is not only changed, but is now the name of Sean's mother. Overall I enjoyed the story, but I think the book could be improved with a good editor.
I got this book as a giveaway from Goodreads.. and I must say, it's the best one I've read that I've received! I really loved the plot line and although this was my first venture into the series, unlike many "in between" series I've read, it pretty much stood on its own and was a delight. Thank you for giving me the chance to discover a new author I like!
