This is a spinoff of てのなるほうへ featuring a youkai friend from the last novel. The first part about the youkai MC1 making his first close friend with a human who suffers from tuberculosis during the Edo period and making him realize the ephemeralness of human lives is great. The rest of the book, sets in the 90s, felt kind of flat to me. I’m also not sure about the ending which hints that the human MC2 will try to turn himself into a youkai so he can live as long as MC1. I kinda wish that MC2 will eventually live out his life just like MC1’s previous lovers.
