The 28th Gate Series #2

The 28th Gate: Volume 2

Rate this book

From tracking a rogue neuromancer to fending off raiders, Hunter thought things would return to normal after he escaped from Maunhouser’s laboratory ship.

But he was wrong.

When Katherine makes a startling discovery in the data she stole from Maunhouser, Hunter is forced to face troubling news before ultimately learning what Maunhouser bought at Site B. Once again, he must face the corp he despises, risking it all to stop them from making the greatest discovery since the fall of the Gate Age.

Set in a far distant future, The 28th Gate is a series of episodic novelettes, spread across six volumes in three seasons, telling the story of Hunter’s struggles against the AAA corporation that created him. Each episode has the action, character, and plotting of a complete story all crammed into an espresso-like package, with each season chronicling a different arc in the overall epic.

Join Hunter and the crew of the Essta now in the exciting conclusion of Season I in The 28th Gate: Volume 2, with episodes 7–12!

What a cliffhanger! Totally surprised. So much more to figure out now. I love that about this series, new little mysteries come up here and there. I also want to thank the author for not shoving the "romance" in our face. So many books focus heavily on romance and by chapter 2 they're ready to get married. I like it in the background. Hurry up and write the next season!

Another entertaining book, and I still think this could make an interesting Roleplaying setting.
With a little bit of tweaking, a couple of the chapters, which are often almost independent adventures, could be adapted to be used in an Expanse game.

This book, like Volume 1, is written like a series of short stories with the same characters in each story. It, like vol one, has major emphasis of weapons and what they can do. The book is an easy read but I am not interested in reading any more of this series. The book is OK but I fail to see how readers can give it 4 or 5 stars.

This picks up where The 28th Gate: Volume 1 ended. The style is the same as the first book. Each chapter like a certain event and centered around a particular weapon. The Bounty Hunter, aptly named Hunter, and his crew are out seeking bounties and getting caught up with corporations as they do so.

The book has no shortage of action and adventure. Every chapter is some new bounty or entanglement that keeps you interested in what's going on. The story also takes some unexpected twists and turns and leaves you with quite the cliffhanger.

Even with the cliffhanger though the story started in Volume 1 feels complete, or at least up to date. It was a bit off putting that we were told that Katherine needed saving in the first book, but didn't get to the reason why she needed saved or who Hunter was talking to. This book reveals this to us and in quite a fashion. It really makes me wonder what's going to happen in the next book.

So overall if you're interested in a dystopian science-fiction world with cool weapons and a giant corrupt corporations then this will be an enjoyable read. It's not filled with deep meaning or philosophical musings, but the characters are enjoyable, the weapons imaginative, and it's just a lot of fun to read.

Top notch SF adventure

I’ve completed Vol 2 of The 28th Gate series and find it fascinating. Of course, I’ve always enjoyed SF where it involves alien or advanced tech the current civilization is dealing with or trying to interpret. When I started Vol 1 I felt disappointed by the opening talking about guns but once I got through that it quickly took on a larger scope on universe building in a setting that would take time to do justice to it all. Vol 1 just set the stage whereas Vol2 gets you immersed into the storylines bringing some cohesion to the overall world of the 28th Gate. Finally we get to meet this construct from the Gate Age of an elder humanity as well as a returned Gate Age commander who arrives back after a trip to the centre of the galaxy, AI’s from that age, and finally descendants of the Gate Age when Hunter goes through the 28th Gate and gets picked up by then. There are just so many possible tales to follow up on here I can’t wait to download Vol 3.

Good books

The first two books were pretty good. I liked that the chapters started with gun descriptions, since a bounty hunter would likely have tried a panoply of guns. Nice twist with Gloria and even nicer twist with the ending of book two. Little typos here and there throughout the books and incomplete sentences, which seems to be a common feature with independent writers. Not a dig at them or anything, as it doesn't take away from the ideas and the flow, but enough to notice. Just being honest. So, all in all solid books, original ideas, very entertaining, but I almost stopped reading after the first couple chapters of book 2, hence the 4 stars. Will probably read #3 as the cliffhanger at the end of book 2 has me intrigued.

Someone, namely the author, likes to design futuristic, state-of-the-art weapons with a myriad of purposes. Expect plenty of description to ground you in this broken world. The original team separates too, and Hunter gathers more contacts. They resort to desperate measures needed to defeat their foe. Tension builds as the Warlock explosions hurtle the wounded Hunter into another reality, and the reader finally learns why he is telling his tale—and to whom.

Like Volume 1 very confusing and easy to get lost

It a hard book to read and understand what you are reading there to many storylines trying to become one that you are constantly lost and trying to figure out what is happening the language and the equipment they speak of really does not make since. The ending of this one I am still trying to understand and hope Volume 3 will do that.

I finished this one and bought the rest of the series without even reading the descriptions. It’s different. The style took some getting used to, but as I adapted I learned to appreciate it. It’s not perfectly written, but it’s a really decent story. Just needs another good editing for all of the minor, but numerous, little errors, but the plot is solid and interesting imo and at this stage I am invested and want to know more. I’m even getting into the weapons. So many weapons. Pew pew.

The Fun Continues

I have no idea how to convey how much happens in this volume without giving away the story so I'll just say this, Hunter, Katherine and the tainted Gloria have more adventures which end at the point where we now know why Katherine needs to be rescued. I can't wait to start the next volume.
Seriously, enjoy!!

Excellent series!

The action just gets better and better. Hunter has made it through a dark gate and is confronted with an amazing fact. Katherine was left behind and he has to rescue her. Next volume is anxiously awaited.

This is a continuation of the story started in volume 1 and in it we learn more about what is going on and who the characters are. Each mini story is presented with the description of a weapon that will play a role in that story. All in all, it makes for compelling reading.

Second part of season one, six stories as Hunter and team take on more missions. Each is a mission file, that also has an underlying theme for a bigger storyline. Good characters and an interesting story.

Loved it!
I am a science fiction buff, but not a gun fan. However, the way the author presents a little introduction to a different weapon at the start of each chapter is captivating. It piqued my interest. Plus, of course, the stories are written in a fast-paced style and as the reader, I felt immersed in the world Chris Dimond created. Loved both of the first two books!

Interesting end that hooks you on the players and the future of the gates.. Lots of twist and turn to keep you interest peaked. Good character development throughout the storyline. Like the style and tempo use of tech as a tool.

I’m well and truly hooked on this story

No I won’t say anything about the story. I hate spoilers.
It’s fun it’s crazy it’s has action and even dabbling in a little love.
It’s a story like David and Goliath but set in the future.

Come on ice cream!

Great story. Can't wait for the next volume. Lost civilization that's not so lost and a clueless hero who doesn't know when to grab his ass and kiss the girl!

A series of vignettes set in a framework leading to the next book. If something gets boring just skip ahead. You won’t miss much. That being said I have read them all.

Decent, but not a masterpiece

A solid sci fi book worth the cost, but not a masterpiece by any standard. Definitely worth the money and the read. written simply, but entertaining.
