★ 4 stars!! ★

This is a great, short and quick read. Well written, interesting characters... A unsettling and sinister story about the end of a marriage and how we really don’t know what people are capable of doing when they don’t accept it. This author is new to me and I really enjoyed this book!

CLEAN BREAK is an amazing psychological drama short story by author Tammy Cohen, and the first book I have read by this author. I have a stack of her books to read, and now after enjoying this short story, I can’t wait to plunge into her full-length novels!

Alternating chapters from a husband and wife about the end of a marriage…when one party doesn’t want a divorce. Kate wants a divorce while Jack refuses. And now that he has found out Kate has met another man; his jealous rages escalate.

Can Kate get rid of her jealous husband before it's too late?

A quick, dark read with an ending that I didn’t see coming, that will blow you away! I look forward to reading more from this author.

Absolutely freaking brilliant!

This short story from Tammy is wickedly good stuff! I loved the entire story. Its got one heck of a superbly executed ending. Awesome!

The story moves between two viewpoints chapter by chapter. A husband and a wife. It's the tale of their marriage and has such a hook for the reader. I would have loved this as a full book!

The characters pop, you'll form your opinions of them quickly and will enjoy watching the psychological drama unravel. Flawed people.

As for the ending, I actually said Oh my God out loud and my jaw dropped. Did not see that coming! Utterly fantabu!ous. Seriously good. Don't miss this one! This is Tammy shining yet again.

When Kate calls time on her marriage of sixteen years to cab driver, Jack, she can’t wait for the awkward realities of the break up to be over and her teenager children to stop being angry with her and Jack’s belongings to finally be out of the box room. After twenty-five-years of his constant put-downs, slights and black moods, her younger new lover Tom has put a spring back in her step (not that she has any intention of telling Jack about her burgeoning romance). Already committed to couples counselling to ensure an amicable break-up Kate is surprised with Jack’s calm demeanour and seeming acceptance of the situation, all whilst constantly refuting his suspicions that she has a new man.

The narrative is comprised of third-person accounts of Kate and Jack over the unfolding days following the break-up but as Kate’s anxiety is raised by some eerie occurrences around the house and suspicions someone has invaded her privacy she is left on edge and nervy. The final straw is her best friends nasty accident which leaves her very shook up and with all-seeing Jack keen to capitalise on her new-found fragility he just needs to find a way to get Tom off the scene and remind Kate of the vows they took.

Ninety-five pages of a seemingly innocuous tale of a man reluctant to accept his marriage is over with a sting in the tail which works purely because it lulls the reader into a false sense of security with its breezy simplicity. Amusing, undemanding, honest and well worth a read.

"Clean Break" by Tammy Cohen is a Penguin 2018 quick read and is a fast paced psychological thriller that I loved.
Intriguing to read, easy to follow and can be happily read in one session, during a couple of relaxing hours should you have the time. I loved the twist at the end and thought it very apt!
Highly recommend all the quick reads in this series and will be buying and reading them again next year.

I do enjoy the Quick Reads series and Tammy Cohen’s books in particular so I have no idea how this QR from 2018 had passed me by for so long.

After 16 years, Kate and Jack’s marriage had fallen apart but Jack was unable to come to terms with the fact that Kate wanted out. “…till death us do part….”

With the story told in tandem by both Kate and Jack, it was interesting to see their different perspective on the same situations and how they reacted. I have to admit that despite the evidence, my sympathies did alternate a little between the two at times, especially at first.

A thoroughly engrossing and deliciously chilling story. I loved it!

Short, snappy and sinister. A great quick and short read. I’ll definitely be checking out more of Tammy Cohen’s work too. Well written and executed. I hope people pick up this Quick Read book and explore this genre further.

Anyone who reads my blog will know that I've been a huge fan of Tammy Cohen ever since I read her first book. Her writing is superb and she's up there as one of my all time favourite authors, every single one of her books is excellent, although I admit I do have a soft spot for her first: The Mistress's Revenge, published back in 2011.

I was really excited to find out that this author had contributed to the Quick Reads collection for 2018, I read these every year and think they are a wonderful idea; for new readers and those who just don't have the time or the concentration to sit down and read a full length novel.

I absolutely consumed Clean Break in one fell swoop. Tammy Cohen's writes with a deliciously devilish wit and dark humour. I was talking about Clean Break to someone on Twitter who described it as similar to Tales of The Unexpected, and yes, that's exactly what it is. A tense, thrilling little story that takes the reader round many an unexpected twist and then smacks them bang! right in the face at the very last turn.

Clean Break is the story of the not-so-clean break up a marriage. Kate and her husband Jack really are obviously not suited and Kate is determined that this is the end of their relationship. Jack, on the other hand, is finding it very difficult to let go. He's obsessed and he's angry, and he gets angrier when he realises that Kate hasn't exactly been honest about why she wants their marriage to end.

Spine chilling and tense at times, with an underlying hint of darkness and devilment, this really is quite the perfect story.

I like the concept of "Quick Reads". It gives a reader a chance to read authors they wouldn't otherwise place at the forefront of their reading lists.

The book is a psychological thriller told from two sides. It doesn't lack in detail despite being short and it does have a few surprises.
It probably could have done with another chapter but ending as it did was intriguing.

A short read that is worth reading as well as another author I should read more from.

This is a sinister little novella about the not-so-amicable dissolution of a marriage.

Kate and Jack have been together for the best part of two decades, and have two children together. When Kate tells Jack she wants a divorce, he's shocked - yes, his temper is a little strong, and yes, he can fly off the handle now and then, but Kate is his. If he can't have her, nobody will.

Kate is keeping a secret, but soon learns that with Jack - there can be no secrets.

A quirky, fast, dark little read that I really enjoyed even if the ending was a bit... yeah. You'll know what I mean when you read it!

As an aside, I've read a couple of full length books from this author and I'd really recommend her, she knows how to write creepy characters really well.

Does exactly what it says on the tin - it's a quick read psychological thriller. The chapters alternate between Kate and Jack telling the story of the beginning of the end of their marriage. It's entertaining enough as long as you don't think too hard about it - the plot doesn't bear much scrutiny. Neither of the characters are very likable or sympathetic. It wasn't really my cup of tea, but the unexpected (if highly implausible) plot twist at the end lifted it to three stars.

Disappointed

I like Tammy Cohen as a writer but is a very bad example of her work! The plot holes are huge - as if a grown man could creep into the house at night when everyone is in bed, open the loft hatch, climb up, re-close the hatch without anyone waking up - not once but multiple times over the course of a couple of months! Without Kate or the children hearing ANYTHING? And the end? Kate supposedly seals her husband in the loft....the loft entrance will still be visible from inside the loft, all he has to do is wait until she's gone and kick the still wet plaster until he's made a hole big enough to climb out. Of course he then has to admit what he's been doing, but at least he won't be dead! Two stars because I do like (usually) her writing.

This was a super great read, I really enjoyed it, which I wasn't sure I would, given that it was a quick short read.

It was well written and the characters were well developed, loved the story line and the ending completely surprised me, but I think it was the perfect ending.

Looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Genre: Crime – Relationships – Psychological thriller

📖 Kate wants a divorce. Her husband Jack doesn’t want a divorce. Their marriage has been on the rocks for years, Kate isolating herself from friends and family over the years to appease her controlling husband Jack. When she finally plucks up the nerve to ask for a divorce she begins to feel free but life is never that simple and Jack’s controlling nature surfaces again in unsuspecting ways.

✍️ Wow, this book pulled me in quickly and didn’t let go, with an ending that had a hell of a twist in its tale. This book is dark, it’s all about keeping secrets. Yet also, so much of it is entirely relatable.

👓 The story alternates from Kate’s viewpoint to Jack’s, each time revealing just a little more about their past (or their present) with a few surprises along the way.

🗣 I often think it’s useful to see an extract of a book to get an idea of the writing style. Here is a brief extract so that you can see a sample of the writing yourself:

For the first hour or so after the policeman left, all she could think of was Tom, and the look in his green eyes when he told her he was falling in love with her.
But now her thoughts have moved to Jack. How his mouth had twisted up when he’d said, ‘I can smell him on you.’ The hatred coming off him in waves.

🗺 This book is part of the “quick reads” collection which I like to intersperse between larger novels. The idea of this collection is exactly as it says on the tin (or should that be cover), a shorter than a normal book by world-leading authors (less than 100 pages). One of the things I quite like about these books is that they force the authors to cut out a lot of the waffle that sometimes goes on in books. This keeps the stories quite fast-paced with a lot happening in less time. This author certainly uses that fast pace to full advantage.

👫 I have never read Tammy Cohen’s work before but based on this novella I certainly will look out for future works from her.

💭 Overall View: A clever story, with a dark plot and the dual narrator method really pulls you in.

Kate has split up from her husband Jack and finally she is free. She is no longer bound by his whims and temper; she can blast out her music, dance around the kitchen, do as she pleases, absolved of the suffocating past she once shared with him. For the first time in a long time, she is utterly happy. She can have a fresh start with new horizons. Their children are confused and angry but they will settle down, adapt with time. Life is on the up. And yet something isn’t right. Jack is oddly calm, his disposition, so dissimilar to the controlling, foul-temped man she was married to fills her with unease. As tension abounds in the house, Kate begins to feel as if she is being watched, hidden eyes that dog her every step. The macabre atmosphere is thick and unbreakable but what is worse is the sudden change in her husband.

Jack has been an absent husband and father for years. He’s prone to bouts of rage and snatches of time when he loses all manner of control – and in those moments, things can take a turn for the worse. This character gave me the chills.

Lies, manipulation, deceit. Welcome to the marriage of Kate and Jack – this is a short thriller that will leave a long and lasting impression. With its superb writing and gripping plot, Clean Break sucks you in and swiftly persuades you to read just one more page … until you find you have finished it all!

WOW what an amazing Quick Read psychological thriller by Tammy Cohen called Clean Break and it is the first book I have read by her too.

Kate has been married for sixteen years to Jack and they have two teenage children, Amy and Ben. Jack is a cab driver and spends a lot of time away from the house working. Their marriage was quite good at the beginning but then Jack showed his true colours day by day and showed traits of narcissism. Jack believes in his wedding vows "Till death do us part."

Kate noticed he would turn off her music which he detested when he walked through the door and there were more incidents which led to a turbulent relationship.

Kate meets Tom who is a lot younger than Jack and one evening when Jack comes home she tells him that she wants a divorce but does not tell him about Tom. Even Ben tells his Mother that he is glad that she has separated from his Dad as he was sick of his bad moods.

The children hear strange noises in the night and Kate tells them it is most probably a squirrel or their cat making these strange noises.

The ending is not how you imagine it would be and the twist is breathtaking to say the least.

I love the quick reads and I love them even more when authors I know have contributed to the collection. Tammy Cohen features on my bookcase, I have yet to read one of her full length novels, however I couldn't wait to get my hands on this as I thought it may spur me to to pick up one of her longer books.

Kate has been married some time and has teenage children with her husband, but she has had enough of him and his controlling ways. She decided enough was enough and she wants out of the relationship, she has even started seeing someone new. Jack her husband cannot understand it, and won't let her go, he has moved out to help her get her head straight but insists on them seeing a marriage councilor to try and work through their differences.

This although little packs a punch and I didn't see the ending coming, I am not really sure if I agree with the ending, I think Kate could have been smarter, but I enjoyed the book and would want to read more from Cohen.

I would recommend you pick this up of you want a quick dark read.

After years in a difficult marriage, Kate decides enough is enough and tells husband Jack - who has a bit of a temper on him - that she wants a divorce. He doesn’t accept it and when he discovers she’s met another man, his jealousy escalates into a rage no-one is safe from.
Another in the excellent Quick Reads series, this works well as both a primer to Ms Cohen (I haven’t read one of her novels before but, on the strength of this, I would be tempted) and as a ‘quick’ read in itself. The set-up is fairly simple, with Kate and Jack narrating alternate chapters (all of which take place on specified dates after the break-up) and the characters are well drawn, both the leads, their children and Mel, Kate’s best friend. Tom, Kate’s new partner, feels a bit short-changed but it’s not an issue. Told with good pace and some nice foreshadowing, I thoroughly enjoyed this (even if I did have a slight issue with the use of plaster) and would very much recommend it.

Spoilers!

Maybe I’m missing something but this book got a little surreal!! The plot sounded a good idea and I kind of liked the way both parties “took action”.

But surely the second body will be discovered?! The author took such pains to describe how Jake got in and out of the loft, like she wanted us to know she’d thought about it and it was believable. But there was no similar detail to explain the end. Surely a body would smell?! What if the house needed work doing in the loft or to the roof?! How would finding a body be explained away? Bit of a coincidence if anyone looked into the timing of the loft being plastered up when he was living up there? Would he not have heard the loft being plastered over? Is plaster really that hard to break?

It just seemed like a big build up to a careless end. I also thought the writing style was a little basic and dated too. Not my cup of tea sorry!

This book was received from the publisher in return for an honest review

Kate knows it’s time for a divorce from her husband Jack – he has a temper on him and is an absent father. The only problem with that is Jack doesn’t want to divorce and once he realises Kate has found another man his jealous rages escalate.

Clean Break is the first story by Tammy that I’ve picked up, but after reading it I’m certainly keen to pick up more. It may be a quick read but I absolutely flew through this, Tammy really packs a lot into less than 100 pages, with chapters alternating between Kate and Jack she manages to really connect the reader with both characters in such a short space, I really became invested in the story. Clean Break is unsettling and sinister and ends with a conclusion that will blow you away!
