Mythic Misadventures #6

Pandora et la cupidité

Rate this book

3/11/20 Update:
I'm not mad at this book. I actually liked it more than the past two or so books? It was refreshing to see Iole having more to her character than being smart. (Though she still uses a big vocabulary.) Meanwhile, Alcie is not swearing in fruits. Pandy was allowed to not be the uber-driven MC that she is. I think that this is a book where we see all of the characters growing simultaneously.

There were a few solid plot twists. (Although, it did take Pandy a bit longer than expected to figure out where Greed was hidden.)

Another aspect I truly enjoyed is seeing hpw Pandy needed help from the Gods. In this book, societal expectations and punishments served as a barrier to their actions since they were playing certain roles. I think that it felt realistic that she could not have done it without their help.

In terms of plot, it is a step up from the previous instalment. It felt that it was as long as it was because it had to be not because the writer had to stretch it out to almost 300 pages.

3/9/20
Am I still reading with this mediocre series? Yes, I am. I really love the idea of it-- pandora unleashing the seven sins and needing to recover them.

Maybe there's a part of me that hopes the ending will be worth it. Idk. Not holding out on it.

At this point, it's a matter of me being stubborn. I rarely not finish a book/series. While I haven't been impressed with how it's unfolded, it's not bad.

Holy mother of God. Someone who loves Carolyn Hennesy needed to tell her to scrap this one and try again.

Yeah, okay, listen. I said I wasn't going to review all of these (and proceeded to review most of them anyway), but I've officially changed my mind because I feel like I'm going insane. I did remember that this was my least favorite in the series as a child, but I didn't recall how truly weird it was, and I think part of that is because I was literally a kid when I read these and didn't know any better. I truly don't want to be giving this one star, because there were still plenty of fun and charming moments and my nostalgia goggles are still firmly in place, but I have a really big problem with this installment and now I'm kinda nervous about re-reading the finale/the next book.

Under the guise of "character development", every character suddenly regresses to have little to no interest in completing the quest, becomes completely unmotivated, and ignores the most obvious evil of the series so far: it is blatantly revealed on maybe page 20 and you would literally have to be stupid to not notice it immediately, which is not what we've seen from these characters in the entire rest of the series; they've already caught five evils, all much better hidden, yet they're suddenly acting like they've lost all higher brain function. They take more than three weeks to notice the source which they interact with every day and may as well be screaming "HERE I AM, I'M GREED, IT'S ME!"

But, honestly, that isn't my main problem with this--it's that it's inappropriate and a bit offensive. The other books admittedly have a lot of violence, especially Pandora Gets Angry, which depending on the child may be a bit much, but this book went in a whole new, uncomfortable direction. I wasn't okay with the fact that Rufina, one of the minor antagonists in this book, is punished for her awful behavior by way of a god cursing her to become obese. For the entire rest of the book, she is shamed for being "comically" overweight, mocked for dancing and described as "rolling around on the floor" as she does, called a "giant snowball with a tuft of black hair", etc.

Not only that, but the last chapter plays domestic abuse as a funny little joke and something the victims deserve. Although we've never seen anything so explicit or strange before in the series, it suddenly cuts to an explicit scene of Hera and Juno (the main antagonists) being spanked by Zeus and Jupiter. The 13-year-old main characters see handprints on their behinds and hear them screaming while Zeus and Jupiter deliver charming lines such as "Now, you know this is strictly for your own good!"

Domestic abuse and spanking your wife may be historically accurate, but it is absolutely horrifying to work it into a middle-grade book without explanation or context and play it not only for a joke, but as something that is utterly normal for a man to do to his wife and something the wife deserves. I also felt it was written in a way that I can only describe as slightly fetishistic, like the author got something out of physical, perverted consequences for their villains. I showed it to my boyfriend to get some outside eyes and see if maybe I was overreacting, but he agreed that neither the fatphobia nor the abuse played for jokes are things we would've been happy about our stepdaughter reading and internalizing when she was in the intended age range for these.

I'm not saying this book is so horrific that no child should read it and it's going to cause irreversible damage or something, but I am saying that I personally thought it was really weird and it's a huge dud near the end of an otherwise reasonably fun series. It still pains me to give this such a low rating and I keep trying to argue myself up to two stars, but every time I do, I remember the quote "joint monumental spanking" and I click on one star again.

TLDR: WTF happened here, Carolyn??

Okay yeah I think that's enough of me going in on a middle-grade book from like 15 years ago. Peace out!

I loved getting to see all of the Greek and Roman gods getting together to help Pandora! It’s so crazy to think that the events of the book happened over the span of about three days, it was all fast and exciting!!

Pandora Gets Greedy is another great book I've read from Mythic Misadventures series. This time the setting takes place in Rome. What I found fascinating about this book is that the Greek gods will go to Rome and meet with their Roman counterparts! I found it amazing how every god has their own twin with the same appearance and personality. I used to always think that a Greek god can transform into a Roman god, but it’s different in this book. This time Pandora needs to capture the sixth evil: Greedy with her best friends. This time Alcie is back from the underworld and she gets to join Pandora with capturing all seven evils. While reading this book I noticed that the gods have many human-like personalities such as getting jealous easily or telling jokes to other gods.
The antagonists in this book are Hera and Juno (Hera’s Roman counterpart). They’re using their amazing powers to kill and stop Pandora and her friends from capturing the seventh evil. This time I actually thought Hera and Juno can kill Pandora and her friends because they both have the same target and they could combine their powers to achieve their desires. I’m also excited to read the next book!

Where last book went off the deep end in terms of torture and pain/punishment, this one went in the opposite direction to be almost ridiculous, and not in a good way.

I did like how Iole became more than just The Smart Character, but I don't understand how none of them picked up on Greed despite it being completely obvious. Dora-the-Explorer obvious.

The once-funny comedic moments weren't funny in this one, and everything felt exaggerated to make it kid-friendly but wound up reading as more weird than anything. I think even if I were the correct age for this, I still wouldn't find it funny - we have an in-detail scene of two goddesses getting spanked by two gods as a punishment, but in a "comedic" way (aka not actually comedic, just plain weird).

I mentioned previously the only good thing of this book was the brief moment where Persephone's powers, because normally the only contribution she makes is to springtime and the flowers, but this one had such a fascinating take. She's the goddess of spring- of "stimulating life where there appears to be none".

Otherwise, this felt much weirder and more boring than normal. I hope the last one is worth reading all seven.

Now Pandy and her friends are in Ancient Rome trying to trap Greed. Ancient Rome is kind of the perfect place for greed, considering its reputation. Iole gets a bigger role here, having a romantic subplot. The series has always followed the henotheistic idea of having all the gods exist at once, but that means here the Greek gods and Roman gods are separate entities, despite being similar. I liked this book about as much as I liked any book in this series.

The sixth book in the Pandora series. Pandora and her friends travel to Rome to capture Greed and return him to the box. They are assisted by all the gods both Greek and Roman, except of course Hera and Juno who have their own plans to take power and get rid of Pandora. Fans of the series will enjoy this installment.

Made me sad

Ms. Hennesey did a job show the effects of Greed. It leads to nothing but anger and resentment. A person full of greed never knows true happiness. They're always searching for more and better.

Now I fear I am about to read the last book in the series. 😥

You might be interested in this if you are interested in Caesar, but it's another volume that's less about finding and capturing the evil of Greed and more about the gang being undercover in Rome.

one of my favorites in the series thus far, outdone, perhaps, only by the final book itself.

If you like reading about Greek mythology, teenage life, and adventures then you will like this book. The lesson of this book is that you should never listen to what those that do not wish well for you have to say, as an influence for your actions.

Pandora is a teenage girl living in the city of Athens in ancient Greece. Her father is the mighty Prometheus. She and her two friends, Alcie and Iole, stay close together as they go through life in Athena Maiden Middle School, always blushing about boys and avoiding their rivals Helen and Hippia. When she gets her annual school project where she has to bring an object that shows how the gods are present in her everyday life, she has no idea of what to bring, and she certainly cannot bring her dad’s liver again. One day she stumbles upon a box under her parents bed, and remembers that it was given to her father from Zeus as a burden for disobeying him.She decides to use it for her project, being extra careful not to break or drop it, but lets the box into the wrong hands. The box breaks releasing the greatest evils, and they engulf Pandora’s world with misery and chaos. Now on the orders of Zeus, Pandora must take a journey across the land and sea to search for the evils, and with the help of her two friends, a few supplies, and some help from the gods she must capture the evils to save her collapsing world.
My favorite quote from this book is, “Pandy knew that her life, if she had one was never going to be the same.” This is my favorite quote because it shows that Pandora is about to go through some life changing events. It shows that it is so life changing to the point that the Pandora questions herself about having a life. I can personally relate to this book because as a girl in middle school like Pandy, I understand how it feels to be offered items, invitations, and other opportunities that can get me some sort of popularity or attention. I know how it is like to lie for my own selfish reason, like when I want to get what another has. Just like how Pandora lied to get a good grade on her project without having to do too much work. I know how it feels to try and fit in, and just like Pandora I have two friends that always stay by my side.
This book made me really think about why girls do the wrong things for popularity because the main character senselessly gave away an item very important to her dad, so she could be invited to one of the “popular” girls party.

When I say this series is kind of like "Percy Jackson" for girls, I'm not meaning it at all derogatorily. It's every bit as exciting, fun, & full of actual Greek myth. The pace moves quickly & the characters continue to develop in personality. Of course, this series has nothing to do with the modern world - even main character Pandora is, of course, a figure of myth. In this book, she's after the sixth of seven terrible things she accidentally let out of her dad's famous box - greed. In order to come across it, she & her trusty friends Alcie, Iole, & Homer, must go ten years into the future to the newly powerful city of Rome, where they become slaves in the house of one seriously obnoxious senator. Things are about to get seriously crazy, but at least Pandy's arch-nemesis Hera is still in pieces in Persia - or is she? Honestly, in spite of the definitely girly cover art, I'd have no problems at all recommending this series to any kid who loved Percy, girl or boy. Can't wait to see how things finish up in the final book.

All right...considering that I read the last few books in this series a few years ago, I was pleasantly surprised that I still thoroughly enjoyed this.

I loved the greek and roman mythology, this book gave the gods and goddesses a much more entertaining role.

Knowing that this book was geared toward...younger readers...I still adored it. It was a fun, relaxing read.

Okay, the one thing I HAVE to mention...I was so, super duper, annoyed with one character: Rufina. Oh my goodness, she's worse than my brother...and my brother is really bad. Not only is she incredibly demanding and unfair...she's also just plain mean. I honestly couldn't stand her. It's been a long time since I've hated a character so much.

Oh, and I loved Pandora as much as I hated Rufina. Pandora has such great and admirable qualities...and ohmygoodness, that ending!

Okay! Six books down, one more to go! I even have the last one in my possession so I can get right on to reading it instead of waiting another few years! Yay!

This title is part of a series and this is the 6th book. I have not read the other books in the series and did not know at the time of check out that it was a series - my bad. But in most series the author is able to write in small reminders of what has occured in previous books so that the reader is not completely lost. This did not happen and I was completely lost. I will try again with 1st book.

I have loved all the rest of the books in the series, and this one didn't disappoint me in my assumption that I was going to love this one as well. I can never get tired of Pandy, her friends, and all the comedy with the Greek Gods. I can't wait till I read the next book! If you haven't read this series and liked Percy Jackson, read this series when you can. You will love it (and this is coming from a 20 year old girl, so age shouldn't matter)!

2013-07-19. Young adult novel rooted in mythology. In this series, Pandora is searching for all the evils that she let out in the world. This time, it was greed. I rally enjoyed the Greek and Roman gods teaming up. That was a fun little bit. Fun book despite being a bit juvenile for me. Good, though.

In the beginning I thought this was going to be a book I was going to have to drag myself through. But as it went on I really enjoyed it. I love the character Homer because even though he's dating Alcie he's still a best friend to all the girls and I think that's a really cute relationship that I wish I had.

This book wasn't as entertaining as some of the other books but I still enjoyed it. It had some really funny parts like usual. I like seeing more of the gods and their personalities. I had a few issues with this book but overall it was fine. I am looking forward to the last book; I want to see how it all ends.

Number six in a series of seven the author has stayed true to her work. There is just as much attention-keeping action and adventure in this book as there was in the first. Highly recommended for late elementary school girls seeking a heroine of Greek goddess proportions.
