GameSweeper is an entertaining story that's truly an odyssey of pure fun. It's a world where magic, aliens and heart-pounding terror come alive.

It was noted by another reviewer, but I didn't realize how bad the scene introducing Violet Simposon was: Cod immediately began to wonder where had this tasty little treat come from. She was by far the best sweet treat that he had ever seen, and he knew Kenny was probably thinking the same thing. Knowing how he and his best friend loved to trade candy, he figured they both were probably wondering what kind of trading it would take to get THIS tasty piece of candy into their bag of goodies.
It smacks of utter disrespect - of girls, parents, and siblings. CONSTANTLY, whenever Cody's brother is mentioned, he's "boneheaded" brother or "annoying" or "pigheaded" or whatever. We get it - you two don't get along.
I get that this is a MG book, but I've read some GOOD MG books that don't insult their vocabulary or pre-teen thoughts.
I really wanted to like this, but once I got to that passage I had to quit.
I received a copy of the Kindle version as a Goodreads giveaway. I decided it would be a good book to read to my gamer son . It took us over 2 months to get through it. He said he would rate it at a 2 star and so that is what I'm leaving it at.
Unfortunately I don't agree. It barely gets a 1 star in my opinion. The following reasons may contain spoilers-
* From chapter 1, you are bombarded with babyish name calling and a not so nice brother.
* That in mind, Lucky is absolutely awful. He is selfish, a follower (only checks out Gamesweeper AFTER every one starts raving about it)
* The way Cody refers to Violet when he first sees her was disgusting. It led to a long discussion with my 13 year old boy, about respect and treating women. Also consent since Cody is under the impression that Violet is a sweet treat for his taking.
*Repetitive Repetitive Repetitive ! Do you have to say "opens the window and 5 seconds later he is sucked out of his window " Every interaction with the Gamesweeper web site and game repeat, repeat and repeat the same thing over and over.
* Getting beat by a girl. It's a huge joke that Lucky gets blasted out of deep space by a girl. Zero respect where women are concerned.
* Parents. Cody and Lucky' s parents are straight up terrible. They have no idea what really goes wrong and they use Cody as a whipping boy.
* inconsistent tech. We are to believe this game has this entire solar system, a space ship and magic candy. However none of the other tech matches. No one has a cellphone?
*The end.... really? I wanted to take Lucky and put him in Juvie or something. Instead....its "okay son, I know you nearly killed your grandma and ruined the house, but don't you worry. Go and play your Xbox one. No remorse.. while Cody is torn up.

I did not like this book whatsoever. I realize that this a a book for middle schoolers, but it is extremely poorly written. The characters are one-dimensional and I despise all of them. They're all horrible and no one has any believable motivation for doing anything. There isn't really any plot, and there are huge chunks that you can completely skip without missing a thing. At best, this was completely forgettable. At its worst, this book really annoyed me. Which is sad, I was excited about the concept of the book, being swept away literally into a video game, a la Tron. But the execution isn't done well, and I'm rolling my eyes at the mechanics of the world which make absolutely NO sense. Not worth your time.
Edit: I figured out what bothers me most about this book - there are no consequences for anything. I'm using magic candy to cheat on a test? Great! Consistently lying to my parents and sneaking out of the house? Awesome! Locking my brother in a gorilla cage? Not a big deal! But there are serious consequences for things the characters didn't even do. Great message to send to your readers there.
I received this book through Goodreads Giveaways for an honest review.
I really did not enjoy this book. I thought name calling between the brothers was obnoxious. The way Cody described Violet when she first came into the classroom was disturbing - saying she was a "tasty little treat."
The idea having a video game pulling you in and you being immersed inside the game was interesting.
This book was really good in the last 1/3 of th book The first third was no so good, it was boring for me but I have to wonder if it would have been had I been a middle schooler.

I’ve been on a few books about video games lately. It has filled a need inside of me to game which I haven’t been able to really do. I was a little hesitant to start this book because I think it needs a better cover because the book itself is well written, addicting plot line, developed characters and a excellent world building. I hope the cover gets updated with what the cover to Gamesweeper game looks like. My favorite character is Cody. I just really like this kid. He is funny, sweet, smart, calculated and caring. He made me laugh with his banter with his brother Lucky. My favorite scenes was Lucky is dazzling space suits. The game I want to play the most is Fantasy Land. I enjoyed this book so much that I purchased the second book in the series and can’t wait to start it.
