This excellently researched book presents the individual periods of van Gogh’s life. Eyewitness Art is full of examples of his art and relevant family and historic images that help one better understand each period. There are remarkably helpful inserts on each page that reveal aspects of van Gogh’s life and how his art evolved.

This is a beautiful and engaging way to witness the life and art of Van Gogh. The only thing I don't like is that it lacks the starry night. It brings his story to life with insight into his art and the circumstances he created it in.

We went to the Van Gogh Experience in San Jose, which led me to reading this. I have seen Leonard Nimoy’s movie about Van Gogh, but didn’t know a whole lot about him. This provided some useful background knowledge.

5 stars - Outstanding publication, richly informative and emotionally moving, surpassing the Manet book in the Eyewitness series (which is also a gem). Note that I am referring to the text by Bruce Bernard.

The Eyewitness series is a great primer to any subject. Very interesting snippets of focused thought on particular inquires within the subject matter. Every two pages explores a unique part of Vincent's life or work through a variety of photographs. From color palettes to mentors to the climate of the time, a lot is explored in very few pages. Beautifully put together and concise for the breadth of field these volumes endeavor to cover. I remember them from childhood and they drum up a feeling of excitement about the subject at hand.

It's more like an encyclopedia.

What I liked the most is the photos of Van Gogh's relatives and some of his belongings.

This book highlights parts of Van Gogh's life and link them to some of his paintings.
