“Me! A daddy? No way!”
The invisible walls of the lone wolf’s well-guarded emotions were trembling uncontrollably by the mere thought. Suddenly he woke up, but the damped sheets kept the shock in a tight grip and refused to let go of his sinewy shirtless body. The remote cabin felt empty without her presence.

*****
Amanda was shocked when Phil threw her out on the street with just an hour’s notice. Years of engagement and everything money could buy apparently meant nothing to him. If he couldn’t maintain the family dynasty he would be disinherited. A huge blow to his ego and reputation. But she’d never expected to get spitted on, called barren, infertile and useless.

*****
In a split second her whole life had been taken away from her. With nowhere to go and no money to call her own she soon realizes that her never-give-up attitude is becoming her best friend. The wilderness her opportunity. For others it’s an escape from the past. Sometimes paths cross for a reason.

All books in the ‘Back On Fever Mountain’ series are stand alone stories, with no cheating, plenty of steam and HEA.

It’s quite simple actually.
I write hot stories about real men and independent women. And it's no secret; I love bad boys.

This was really bad. And then the story just stops. The End. And what is happening after?

There is no romance in this book. No declaration of love/feelings. At the end they just decide to be together for the baby's sake and they'll work it out. Somehow. It read like a business transaction. A deal. "Oh we have a baby. So then we become parents. I want you to be there for your child and I don't want to leave the mountain cabin. So we have to work it out. The baby is the most important thing and he just needs love. The rest is so unimportant."

There's nothing more I have to add. Wast of time.

This wasn't an awful book but there were a LOT of things that could have made it better. It did have quite a few grammatical errors but seeing as how that has been known to make me DNF a book in the past, the fact that I read all the way to the end of The Cabin Escape speaks volumes.

The main female character Amanda was a terrible pushover. I've read books before where other reviewers called the MC a doormat and sometimes I just didn't see what they were talking about. I truly saw it in this short story.

At the start of the book, Amanda returns home from a doctor's appointment to confront her fiance Phil-- the two of them have been trying unsuccessfully for months to conceive a child--to let him know that test results show the inability is not due to any malfunctions of her reproductive system. Phil, (whom we learn is controlling, petty, and vindictive) quickly denies that the fault could belong to anyone other than Amanda and promptly gives her an hour to pack up her things and move out of their home. We also learn that Phil's grandfather who is dying has a condition in his will that means in order to inherit any of the vast Wist fortunes, Phil must have a child before the old man passes. Seeing as how Amanda has not been able to provide him with said child in the two years that they've been trying, he has no use for her (and has no qualms telling her just that).

Poor, desperate Amanda has very little money, no job prospects, and apparently no other support system so she answers a classified ad in response to a mountain man who is looking for a live-in housekeeper and cook.

Now, I didn't really have a problem with Amanda seeing this opportunity as her only saving grace, my real gripe was

Like I mentioned, I actually did manage to finish this novella so I suppose I can't judge it too harshly. My only other gripe is that there was NO EPILOGUE!! I can't stress enough to these authors (especially the indie ones) how much a story like this NEEDS an Epilogue. I feel if your story is less than 120 pages, an epilogue should be a REQUIREMENT. Seriously. While the tone of "let's agree to stay together and try our damnedest to make this work and see where we end up" added an unexpected element of realism to this story, an epilogue providing a glimpse of the couples' lives a few months or even years down the road would have been appreciated. It might even have earned this read another star.

This book contains characters that all of them are weak, not hero-heroine-minded. Lame and super meh.

You've been warned.

I remember being fascinated at the beginning of the story. I mean, the idea of being "stuck" with a mountain man who is basically a gentle giant is pretty appealing. The story flows beautifully, until the moment when the heroine acted so very stupid that I can't help but rolled my eyes. The mood's broken.
So yeah, overall great story with a poor twist. Could be so much better!

City girl meets country boy and flames burn

THE CABIN ESCAPE is the first book in Ms Devenport's new series RETURN TO FEVER MOUNTAIN. Once again she has written a fast paced steamy book that definitely won't keep you wanting. I love Melissa's books because I know that I can devour them within a couple of hours.

Amanda Rath has had her peaceful little world turned upside down. Her fiance, Phil Wist, needs an heir in order to retain his inheritance - no baby, no relationship. Amanda is forced to start over again she and meets Jason Strathmore and the attraction is instantaneous. She begins her new life as Jason's employee, his housekeeper. Can Amanda tame the man who lives in the cabin? Will Jason help Amanda restore her self-esteem? What surprises are on the way for these two extremely different people?

A hot steamy read, with a touch of romance and angst thrown in. I really enjoyed this one. A hot read for a cool afternoon. I can't wait to see what Melissa comes up with next.

Naah

This book was very sloppily put together. It covers 1 month of a woman's life who can't seem to make a simple decision on her own that's not stupid. Also in that 1 month you end up never finding anything about any of the characters although the whole thing suggests all these hidden pasts. The book ends with you knowing nothing about these characters and not even knowing why this is the end of the story. So is this an author writing a book, or anyone writing words that are kind of a story and putting it out as a book? An author puts there most and best work into a book. Obviously this is not an author.

GR user BlueBelle said it perfectly in her review...

This read more like a business transaction, not like a love story or romance book.
Basically, Amanda gets kicked out by her asshole fiance after he deems her useless because of her infertility and she ends up accepting a job at Jason's secluded cabin in the woods.

I don't even know what to say about Jason. At least I don't know any positive things that could come to mind to describe his character. In fact, the only positive trait I could find about him in the entire book was when he . He's rude and unfriendly to Amanda from the very first moment she arrives at the cabin, bosses her around and very openly shows his displeasure towards having her at his cabin, even though he demands her cleaning and cooking for him from day one.

And then there's Amanda. Throughout the course of the book it quickly became apparent that our heroine must be of the stupid kind because she not only went back to the asshole that kicked her to the curb in the first place, she also hoped for him to help her starting her own career AND expected him to be 'just friends' - well, duh. How someone can be so dense really is beyond me.

Oh, and then there's the ending, of course.
The book basically ends mid-conversation. Amanda is pregnant, Jason has her back at the cabin even though he kicked her out because he was accusing her of tricking him into a pregnancy and suddenly the book ends after they decide 'Yo, let's do this. We are smart adults who will figure things out.' And bam! - The End.

Huge letdown all around.

I really enjoyed this short read of The Cabin Escape. It was really well written and flowed beautifully. The characters and plot were great. Amanda Rath had a controlling fiancé, Phil Wist who was rich and entitled and only wanted Amanda to give him a child so that he could gain his grandfathers inheritance. His grandfather controlled the family, no baby, no inheritance. Phil threw her out as she had not produced a child in the 4 years together. She takes a job as a housekeeper to Jason and the story ensues. Lots of intrigue and hot scenes. For sure a must read. I will certainly be reading many more books by this great author. This is my honest review of an ARC I received.

I definitely enjoyed curling back and reading "The Cabin Escape". A few unexpected angst filled moments, a couple of gnash your teeth flat because "what the hell" and more than a generous amount of ooh's and aahs and sighs to fill an afternoon! Really enjoyed Ms. Devenport's new addition and can't wait to read more of this series!! I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book

This is an amazing, vividly described, quick read. The storyline is well-written and has powerful imagery. The characters some lust-worthy and likable and some that are mostly despicable are relatable and realistic with fabulous chemistry, I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.

Amanda had met Phil 4 years ago while she was in college. He was from a wealthy affluent family, but they also had a reputation to see things in black and white; there was no grey therefore sometime they were not very nice people. Amanda was young and naive when he asked her to move in with him. Her Mother did not want her doing this and gave Amanda a choice if she moved in she could never come back home to her. Amanda choose to move in with Phil. After two years they became engaged and were trying to have a baby. Amanda came home after a day of taking a battery of test to find out if she was the problem because she wasn't pregnant. The doctors were not able to find anything wrong with her. When she got home Phil was there waiting for her had demand her to tell him what the doctors had told her. He called her a liar, throwing her into her painting studio, telling to pack everything she has and to be gone in an hour.

Shocked beyond belief Amanda packed up her paintings, and her other things and left to stay the night in a cheep hotel and to cry her eyes out. She couldn't believe that they man that she thought loved her would kick her out with just her thing, a little bit of money she had tucked away. All she had was a degree in Art, and she did take her canvases that he told her were nothing but trash. He had, had Amanda so brainwashed over the years that she believed him right and the doctors must have missed something and that she was the one that was inferential.

She started looking for a job with her limited work experience and found an add for a housekeeper, and she applied right then.

Jason's cabin's were completely different from what she expected, and for a little while she was afraid she was a little over her head, but she had no choice she had no where else to go. Jason was sure she would be gone within a week or he hoped because he had such an attraction to her he didn't want to act on but she showed him wrong. They started to develop some what of a friendship as she worked for him, then things changed. They both found that they were falling for each other but Jason did not want to admit it. Then Amanda started to feel tired when she shouldn't. She went into Boulder, bought a test, and found out she was pregnant.

She was scared, she didn't know what Jason was going to say. She all read knew she was keeping. Now this is where I am going to leave you hanging. What is Jason going to say, and yes Phil is not out of the picture as of yet either. You will need to have a tissue handy for the rest,

The only thing I found this book lacking in is that it did not go into Jason's background at all, or why he was keeping it a secrete from her and every one that new him. Other than that I love this book.

Mountain love

A short sweet story. Hot and steamy in a few places, but definitely short and sweet. I would have been happier to learn more of Jason's back story. Ends in a HFN, which is truly all we ever have.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

This story is full of emotional angst; it is riveting, wicked with some steamy sex scenes that are off-the-chart hot! I wasn't expecting the turn this story took; it has quite an unexpected surprise that may leave you flabbergasted but it is jaw-dropping good! From the very first page, I was spellbound by these fantastically described characters that you will find yourself falling in love with—or not. I really enjoyed reading this book and the momentum of the story keeps you wanting to read more that you can’t put it down! When Amanda’s fiancé, Phil Wist, throws her out of the house—you will be surprised to find out the reason why! Amanda accepts a job offer as a housekeeper at a rustic cabin location because she needed somewhere to stay after Phil tossed her out. Jason Strathmore was handsome, sexy, had sky-blue eyes, black hair, and a body that was sinful. Their attraction for each other seemed problematic at first because Amanda worked for Jason, but the chemistry between Amanda and Jason grows more potent the more time they spend together—the sex is off-the-chart hot! Why was Jason living out in the woods? What was Jason hiding—his past? Will Amanda find out the reason and what he is hiding? This was an enjoyable book with an interesting plot and dialogue, and it keeps you reading to the end to find out what happened. The scenes are well written, fast-paced and flow smoothly from one scene to the next. This story will pique your interest and draw you in from the beginning to the very end. I don’t want to give away too much, but this is a definite MUST READ!

I received an ARC copy of this book. I have read and reviewed it. Therefore giving my honest and voluntary review.

This was the sweetest story I have ever read. Jason and Amanda have the sweetest love story. To think we are in love with someone to find out that there really was enough to make it a reality. Then the betrayal. And leaving with ghosts of your past that makes you feel like you never could be or feel love. Then you find it unexpectedly. PeRFECt STORY!!!

I tried to read this book, but it doesn't work. The main "heroine" of the story is an irritatingly miserable creature with no self-respect. It's so bad that I gave up on the fifth page.

This was a great, fast pace short story book to read. It has some romance and left with some mystery. It has a happy for now type of feel. Who knows what dark secret that Jason has or will Amanda make it as an artist and will they make it together. Would love some kind of update on these two lovers in her future books in the series.

I had to give this one 3 stars because it just didn't do a lot for me but didn't not do a lot for me at the same time. It was just in the middle. Not much of anything. I wouldn't telll everyone to not read it. I enjoyed it but I've enjoyed so many books soooo much more. It's short and sweet but there's a continuation of the story in book 2. May or may not read that. I kind of want to know about their story but the writing doesn't really grab me. I feel like it was lacking some description and things just moved too fast. Don't give up on it though, you may like it.

She gets kicked out of the house by her rich asshole man, because she wasn't pregnant. He needed her to be pregnant to get his fathers company. He blamed it all on her and threw her out. She- alone in a shitty hotel room- stumbled across a newspaper classified about a live in job on a plot of land in the mountains with no electricity or running water. She was hired for the position and now working for the big sexy mountain man all alone and hardened by being alone in the mountains. They eventually clicked and that's all she wrote folks. Pretty simple nothing too special but I really hate talking down on anyone's work. I did enjoy it some. The sexy times weren't too bad and he sounded yummy haha!!

This was a decent book. I did have problems with the fact that I didn't learn anything about the hero, Jason or why he was secluded on that mountain. Not even a hint, and he refused to talk about it. Frustrating!

There was, however, a lot of chemistry between him and Amanda. I thought his broody behavior was sexy at times, other times I just wanted smack him! Then there's the end where I realized I wasn't going to get that much needed back story. It would have made him less of a brute, maybe?!

Amanda-- I almost felt sorry for the poor thing. Her ex was awful, and she should have listened to her mother in regards to him. I felt the mother's ultimatum was a bit strong though, and she could have been more understanding about youthful mistakes, being blinded by love, or in Amanda's case--being dumb?! But she told her daughter to never come back. That was harsh. I admit I read the story thinking that Amanda and her mother would reconcile, but I never got to meet her either.

Then I wanted to pull poor Amanda to the side and shake some sense into her! Why on earth would she allow her fiancee (ex) to treat her that way all because he's trying to secure his inheritance?! I mean he was seriously cruel the entire time they lived together, and then he tossed her out like garbage. He could never have feelings for anyone else but himself. And she just took it! Ugh!

Anyway, the climax of the story leads to Amanda and Jason geting into a terrible argument where he says some not-so-nice things (apparently he didn't mean it🙄) and where does she go?! *Facepalm* "Really?!" I really struggled with that part, like "what was the author thinking having the heroine go anywhere near an ex that literally threw her out?!"

I needed Amanda to toughen up. I don't care how rich her ex was, or how prestigious his family is supposed to be, he needed to be taken down a peg. She allowed him to literally push her around, and risked the life of her unborn child. I wanted to see Amanda standing on her own two feet for once. Also, it would have been awesome if she would have smacked the s*** out of him!

Like I said, I did enjoy the story over all and the chemistry between Jason and Amanda was sexy and hot. Theorectically, I shouldn't like this story since the heroine was rather weak, and the hero was just about at jerk level, but something kept pulling me in. Maybe it was the story's potential. Maybe because I loved the moments where Jason fought with himself over his attraction to Amanda. I also loved that he saw her true artistic talent and admired her work. Now, I see there's another book that features them and their baby, so maybe I'll find out more about Jason. Who knows?! Maybe I'm just gluttoned for punishment?!🤷🏾‍♀️😭😭
