Fitz is an ingenious psychologist who freelances his services to the police as a criminal profiler and master confessor. The police admire his skills, but not his Fitz loves gambling, booze, cigarettes, and pushing his considerable bulk into any situation that intrigues him. When a pair of cop-killers fall in love and begin a crime spree, Fitz gets brought in to hunt them down. In the midst of his investigation, his wife leaves him and he finds himself falling for his department liaison, Detective Sergeant Jane Penhaligon. Torn between love of his family and the charms of the young policewoman, Fitz must focus on a case that questions the very nature of love and violence.
The Cracker TV show has long since faded from my memory. But back in December, I saw this novelization of a Cracker episode while browsing the shelves at The Book Inn in Fairhope, Alabama. My standards for books aren’t very high, but I usually draw the line with novelizations. But not this time.
The novelization is very gritty. It features a young prostitute who goes on a crime spree with a young man who is madly in love with her. Cracker must solve the case before it’s too late. The Cracker character’s personal life is challenging, featuring broken relationships. Likewise, he is overweight and enjoys smoking and drinking.
I thought that this was going to be a five-star book, but the last 100 pages or so ended up being too pat. The story needed something more - something surprising. But the authors didn’t quite deliver in the end. Still, I’m glad that I read it.
The only thing I liked about this book was some of the characters. The plot and the story telling was very boring and very dull. In all honesty I hated this book. Xx
It's great reading this and imagining Robbie Coltrane playing Fitz. I still remember all the players from the tv show, and love them. I think I even remembered this episode. It must be one of the only series that I don't mind having the characters already pictured in my head.
