Ranier Lu is one of six humans chosen to undertake a grand adventure - he will accompany a group of Pitcairns and juvenile Remarkables, intelligent treelike beings, on a ritual wilderness journey that marks the Remarkables' passage to adulthood. But one of Lu's companions has an agenda so cruel that Lu comes to fear for the safety of the entire Realm.
Read this one a while back. A lot of character development, with what I felt were some hints of misogyny and gratuitous cruelty. But really, beyond all that, IIRC, the book ends abruptly with the death of the main character in an unsatisfying, unclimactic, almost mundane way.
This wasn't the first book or story I'd read by Reed, but if it had been, I never would have read anything else by him.

This book will speak to everyone who undertook a pilgrimage or a really long multi-day/week hike. Reading this made me feel really nostalgic, somehow. Really contemplative book, probably not for everyone.
