When the mutilated remains of local hard man, Tam Whitlow, are found tied to a chair, in a dilapidated building, Marnie Hammond and the team believe the murder could be gang-related. Whitlow worked for Jimmy Rae, a man who hides behind the facade of local businessman but whose empire has been built on fear and extortion. However, it appears that someone is trying to take over from Rae, someone who is willing to commit horrific killings to achieve their goal. Meanwhile, Tom Conway is looking for his oldest friend, John Hall, who is missing along with his young daughter, Rowan. As Conway starts to ask questions he finds himself in grave danger. Is there a link between the missing man and the spate of murders? Will Tom or Marnie discover the truth before it is too late? As the body count rises, Marnie realises that there is someone in the shadows, someone who will never rest until they have had their revenge.

Cut The Threads is the second book in the series. Although this can be read as a standalone I wouldn't advise it. I didn't read the first book and I have to admit I felt a bit lost at times. Although I did still enjoy the book.
There are plenty of stories weaved into this book to delve into. The opening scene is a brutal murder and beheading. Whom we come to find out is a serious player in the criminal underground world alongside king pin Jimmy Rae. Why Tam has been brutally murdered we are yet to find out.
It's here we meet DS Marnie Hammond she arrives at the crime scene determined to find out who killed Tam. Marine appears to have alot of demons from her past although I think reading the first book would of told me more. As she is an interesting character. She's fiesty, bold, strong and isn't affraid to bend the rules to get results. I really liked her detective skills.
Jimmy Rae is top king pin. He runs all the drugs and prostitution however it appears his empire is about to be threatened. But by Who? Can Jimmy keep his throne. Jimmy is not a man to be messed with. He is extremely ruthless and acts first thinks after. He is out for revenge! Beware!
Alongside this story we meet Tom. Tom's Best friend & Daughter has mysteriously disappeared. Although Tom hasn't seen John and his daughter Rowan for a while there is always some contact. Tom is becoming increasingly worried so he sets out to find his best friend and daughter.
I really did enjoy Cut the threads. It was gripping, dangerous, thrilling, a variety of characters, perfectly placed twists, kept me guessing. I also want to mention I LOVE the Cover! It's so eye catching it drew me in!
My only concern was I did get lost at times with the amount of characters and sometimes getting lost within the stories. I found I did have to refresh back. For this reason alone I gave 4 stars.
I do recommend Cut The Threads but I think it would be wise to read the books in order. Just so you get the full benefit of the characters. Which is what I'm going to do as the first book looks amazing too! Definetly an Author I'm adding to my list.
Thank you to Bloodhound Books for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Book two of this series, liked the first book slightly better as wasn't sure we're this book was heading as all about gangsters.did enjoy Marnie story and Conway a young girl goes missing Conway trying to find his friend and daughter.great crime book.highly recommend this series.
Cut The Threads is the second book in the DS Marnie Hammond series. Events in this book directly relate to the first one in the series so I do feel you should read “Keep You Near” first as there’s quite a bit of background you’d be missing out on otherwise.
In this one though, there’s a whole cast of rather despicable characters who seem to be vying for the “worst bad guy award”. With some gruesome murders (think machete), fights, grooming and prostitution, it’s easy to find yourself completely engrossed in the world of gangs and criminal kingpin Jimmy Rae. But Jimmy’s empire is falling apart at the seams as it seems someone else has rolled into town who’s pulling the strings but who and why?
Meanwhile Tom Conway is looking for his oldest friend John, who’s gone missing with his young daughter. Being ex-army, Tom is most definitely on a mission and he’s utterly ruthless in his quest to find the truth. Despite maybe not going about things the right way, I couldn’t help but sympathise with him.
DS Marnie Hammond remains as fierce and determined as ever. She’s not afraid to break the rules from to time if she thinks this may lead to a breakthrough but more than anything, she wants to know what happened to her sister. It’s why she joined the force in the first place after all. But is teaming up with a killer taking things a step too far?
There are various threads running through this story, which may or may not be connected in some way. I enjoyed the variety in characters. Some you root for, some you’d quite happily take a machete to yourself. Cut The Threads is tense and suspenseful and a thrilling addition to the series. It kept me guessing until the end and I look forward to seeing what’s in store for Marnie next.
Cut The Threads is the second book in the DS Marnie Hammond series. I highly recommend reading Keep You Near prior to starting this one. There is a lot of background to do with Marnie and her missing sister that you would benefit from knowing before hand.
I absolutely loved Keep You Near. It is very rare that I would give all the stars for the first book in a series due to their usually being a lot of background and getting to know the main character but it had me gripped from the off. I did wonder if Cut The Threads could meet the expectations I had for it. I am very pleased it not only met them but smashed them into tiny pieces!
This is one dark and gritty read with a fair bit of violence in it. It is very much needed though to show what it is like in the criminal world of which Jimmy Rae is involved in. There was plenty of OMG and jaw dropping moments at some scenes which both horrified yet thrilled me.
Tom’s character really made for some emotional reading. To start with I wasn’t too sure about him but the further into the story I got, I had such admiration of which I don’t think I was the only one.
Cut The Threads is one thrilling roller coaster ride of a read. The author had me very much kept in the dark as to who was behind the killings and boy, when it all starts to come to light, I could hardly contain myself. A crime read that starts off with a bang and just gets better and better until the mind blowing finale!
Whoa! The opening scene in the latest Marnie Hammond series just makes you curl your toes and pull your head back into your shoulders a little. It is gruesome, it is an introduction to a new and vile reign of terror and it is just bloody awesome!
This is the second book in the series and although it could be read as a stand alone I would say to you read, Keep you Near, the first book in the series, to really get under the skin and into the mind of Marnie Hammond and what makes her tick. Marnie is a gutsy little fire cracker of a dedicated DS but she also has a personal agenda that eats away at her living a normal life.
Set in Kirkhead, a fictional place in Lancashire, the balance of power among the big boys is being well and truly pushed to the limits but the ‘calling card’ is pure violence and as yet unsigned. Jimmy Rae is not a man to tangle with but the people closest to him and some of his employees are diminishing pretty quickly but he has no idea who could want or even dare to take over his territory.
Tom Conway, a real mystery man, also arrives in Kirkhead to look into the disappearance of his best buddy John Hall and his young teenage daughter Rowan. Now be it right or be it wrong Tom became a favourite character of mine and I am sure of many other readers. He is a ass kicking machine that has nothing to lose and won’t stop until he finds John and Rowan no matter which side of the law he works from.
Robin Roughley always works with a multitude of characters that are so distinctive they remain individuals that you remember. He plays with your mind and emotions, at times letting you the reader know what is happening to certain characters while others are desperately trying to find them. It leaves me willing them on knowing that time is running out and I find myself reading at break neck speeds as if that can make a difference to saving someone.
There are some very unusual bonds formed in this story, a mutual need to get a job done. This is turning out to be a real cracking series where Marnie is being pushed to unbelievable limits that just left me totally numb. Just utterly Brilliant!
Cut the Threads is a shocking and utterly dark thriller taking you along on a rollercoaster of a ride through minds most sick and foul with murderous intentions – but killing alone is just not enough…Will DS Marnie Hammond untangle the intrigue or get caught in the deadly ropes?
The Prologue sets the tone for this disturbing thriller: a man is murdered in such a violent and vicious way that your breath gets caught in your throat. The victim would be so lucky if he felt like that – but seeing as the blade slides right through his throat… Upon whose orders is this man killed and why? Considering the mutilation and horrible death of the victim, it is no wonder DS Marnie Hammond and her colleagues think the murder is gang-related – and that this could be just the beginning…
| Storyline | Marnie Hammond is still in shock over the events in her last case (‘Keep You Near’, book 1 in the series) and feels unable to erase the vivid images spinning in her mind whenever she wants to go to sleep – the nightmares bring her back to the house on fire and the man, who abducted her little sister, sixteen years ago. As long as she does not know what happened to her, Marnie will never find closure and is sure as hell never going to give up trying. But she needs all her wits about her to find the murderer of the slaughtered victim – a victim, impossible to identify as the body has no hands nor feet nor, for that matter, a head… We know already the body belongs to a man called Tam Whitlow, in league with the savage mobster, Jimmy Rae. A man earning money with prostitution and drugs, a man no one dares to cross.
Jimmy Rae is a violent bastard, at the moment fuming with anger and furious with Whitlow for not showing – as he is blissfully unaware that Whitlow is no longer capable of fearing Rae’s revenge. Then there is Tom Conway, ex-military, a man who does not hesitate to use violence to extract information because he is a man on a mission in search for his missing eleven-year-old goddaughter, Rowan, and her father. Tom is desperate, the longer it takes, the less chance he will find them alive. As the murders and acts of violence pile up, the police frantically try to make sense of the murders and tortures before more mutilated bodies will be discovered. Marnie puts herself in danger against heavy criminals but she cannot find peace of mind, let along sleep, as long as little Rowan is a captive of evil criminals.
| My Thoughts | OMG! What a tense, dark and gripping read! I loved it and hated it – the nauseating images that come up in your mind, picturing the horrible and gruesome events… I cannot divulge too much as it would be giving away the plot but anyone who knows Marnie Hammond, is aware of what motivates her – what made her chose a career in the Police: the abduction of her little sister and the fact that she could do nothing to prevent it. Is it a wonder she loses it in this second book in the series? I can only admire her for her drive – Robin Roughly has created a strong, driven and tough cookie female detective in Marnie and I love her!
If you are going to read about Marnie, be sure to start with the first book in the series, ‘Keep You Near,’ as this book refers to it and it makes you understand Marnie so much better. To me, this second book in the series is a step up from the first and I love where the author is going with the series. Robin Roughley has expertly crafted his characters in such a way, that I empathised with a killer and oh yes, I totally fell in love with DCI Reese (#charactercrush). ‘Cut the Threads’ is fast-paced, action-packed and leads you astray in so many ways! This thriller is impossible to put down, there are killers and torturers on the loose and the book is ablaze with violence and cruelty – malicious, cold-blooded and venomous.
This is the second book in the series but my first and first by this author. Most likely my last. It just didn’t really pull me in. I kept looking to see how close to the end I was. Sometimes you can pick up a series starting with the second one and be ok. IMO, not so in this case. This book didn’t need to be this long. Too much detail given to everything to the point where I started skimming. I was actually bored at points because of the detail. I found myself saying “get on with it already!” so many times I lost count. It starts out as 2 story lines that eventually converge. There are multiple scenes with gruesome explicit violence. The perpetrators are truly hateful, evil, despicable, unconscionable miscreants.
If you don’t like the word cunt, you’re not going to like this book, as it is used about every other page.
DC Marnie Hammond has PTSD from watching her sister get kidnapped 15 years ago. She became a detective to have the means and access to what she needs to continue the search for her. I didn’t connect with her character. I found several of her actions unbelievable.
A mutilated dead body turns up in an abandoned warehouse. Marnie is brought in and the hunt for the killer is on. As the investigation continues, Marnie begins to question all the “threads” leading from this one death. The cast of character keeps growing and growing…..
The only family Tom Conway has is his best friend, John Hall. They went into the army together as teenagers. He is godfather to John’s daughter. When Tom discovers they are both missing, he goes on the hunt. He is lethal and very intent on his purpose. Despite some of his actions, I liked Tom, felt for him.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley and the publisher.
Thank you to Bloodhound Books and Net Galley for a free copy of this book in trade for an honest review.
This is a complicated read but interesting if you like twisted plot and unrelated clues. It’s something that you really need to follow from the beginning until the end. And then not to mention there are some characters that comes in the middle or mentioned in the beginning of the book to come up later near the end. It really drives me crazy for reading this book.
At first glance, the story feels like a crime involving gangster or mafia. Occasionally there’s a reference to Marnie’s past with her sister’s killer and how she didn’t get any closure (she still didn’t get it until the end). Not until the middle of the book, a mysterious character called “the woman” appeared. It looks like she’s the one that linked all the murders that happened.
For the story itself, there are too many clues cluttered around the entire book. I feel the story becomes a bit unfocused. The plot is too twisty, too complicated to follow. From a mafia crime jump into children’s abduction and murder and then jump again into murder by revenge. It’s too far-fetched. The story about the serial killer doesn’t really come up until near the end.
The characters have strong attitude and personality. Marnie as a police officer is a strong, determine to finish her job but sometimes got drag into her past. What I like is the character of Rowan Hall. She’s strong, a survivor although she’s still a teenager. Tom Conway appeared to be a strong willed man with plenty of love for his goddaughter.
The end is quite shocking and unexpected. At least the ending is quite happy for everybody in the story.
Recommend for those who love a story with a complicated plot, strong willed characters and unexpected ending.
Big Jimmy Rae is a crime boss who runs drugs and prostitutes and hides behind the façade of being just a businessman, but he is a violent and intemperate man. He is very used to getting his own way by using both fear and extortion.
When one of his minions, Tam Whitlow goes missing at first Jimmy is angry, but little concerned about Tam’s welfare. When some of Tam’s body parts, including his head are thrown though his window at his home, he gets very angry. The fact that the police in the form of DS Marnie Hammond and DCI Reese are there at the time the bag came through the window doesn’t help at all.
Rowan Hall and her father John are missing. Rowan has been kidnapped and held for some unknown reason. His friend, Tom Conway, has come to town to try to find Rowan and john. He speaks with a young girl named Emma Winstanley who gives tom the name of the man who was holding her. Tom pays a brutal visit to the man.
The police respond to the report of a body in a field. The victim is one Dave Hamer. He has been beaten to death. The police interview a prostitute and learn that Hamer kept her prisoner, but young Emma had gotten away and is in a safe house; the same safe house where John Hall worked. John and his daughter Rowan have been missing for several weeks now. Marnie wonders if it was Hamer and his cronies who took John and his daughter.
Meanwhile, Tom Conway continues to follow leads until her gets the name of Jimmy Rae. He begins to gather intelligence on Rae.
It appears that the police and Tom are on the same trail. Did Rae kill or have killed Hamer for letting the young Emma get away? Did the mysterious Tom Conway kill Hamer? Did Hamer go back and kidnap John and his daughter?
Arnie Phelps, Rae’s attorney goes missing. Marnie and PC Bev go to his office to speak to him and find the place ransacked. Marnie and Bev then head to Phelps’ home. There they find DI >>>>> (who is next to useless, having already ignored the investigation into Rowan and John’s disappearance), who again is useless. DCI Reese reams him out, but to little effect.
The speed of the story picks up as Marnie meets Tom and they team up to locate Rowan. It all winds up on a dark and stormy night (no kidding), and all of the reader’s questions are resolved – well, mostly.
I’ve read Robin Roughley’s DS Lasser books, and this novel is just as fine as those are. It is well plotted and very well written. It reads linearly, that is to say one event follows another clearly and concisely. The short chapters make the book just fly by as the reader in engrossed in the action. I discovered that I liked DS Marnie Hammond. She is brave – fearless almost, but takes matters into her own hands perhaps a touch too much. The story gave a lot of information about her background (but not so much that it intruded on the story), but said nothing about her boss, DCI Reese. He is a cipher. We don’t even know his first name. It is a very good read, and I am anxious to go back and get the first in this series. Well done, Mr. Roughley! Keep writing!
I want to thank NetGalley and Bloodhound Books for forwarding to me a copy of this absolutely great book to read and enjoy.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bloodhound Books for an advance copy of Cut the Threads, the second novel to feature DS Marnie Hammond.
The novel opens with gangster Tam Whitlow being dismembered alive by someone looking for information. When Marnie gets there with her boss, DCI Reese, they surmise it's gang related but as more bodies turn up they begin to suspect there's more to it. In the meantime soldier Tom Conway is home to look for his closest friend, John Hall and his daughter, Rowan, who have been missing for over a month.
I thoroughly enjoyed Cut the Threads which is more of a thriller than a police procedural as Marnie tears up the rule book in her hunt for John and Rowan. It makes for a tense, exciting read if violent, as the opening chapter proves, and full of bad language which, given the gangland setting is appropriate, but may not be for the faint hearted.
I have not read the previous novel in the series, Keep You Near, but I now have no need as the main elements are reprised in detail in this one because although Cut the Threads is a stand alone it has a thread which is definitely not cut and appears to run through these two novels and will be continued in the next as it's not fully resolved. Marnie joined the police to try and find out what happened to her sister when she was kidnapped in front of eleven year old Marnie's eyes sixteen years ago. Every novel adds a little to her knowledge but not enough to satisfy her. So, while the main plot is complete in the novel, Marnie's quest continues.
My jury is still out on Marnie. She is a good, smart detective, able to fathom out the motives behind the crimes she investigates fairly easily, but as soon as she gets a whiff of her sister, Abby, and the people involved in her abduction she turns into a cold blooded sociopath with vengeance on her mind. I can't envisage this split personality but perhaps that says more about me and my comfortable life than the deep hurt she feels.
I like the portrayal of the other characters from the gangsters with no loyalty and whose automatic response to adversity is violence to the inept DI Rogers and the extremely supportive DCI Reese.
Cut the Threads is a good, tense read which I have no hesitation in recommending.
Explosive and that's putting this second book in the Marnie Hammond series mildly!
It has so many threads running through it, and so expertly woven together, it has your mind running riot, so much so, I became obsessed with digesting every single word and sentence........ Just incase I missed a hint, of what was to come. Not a chance with Robin Roughley"s writing, your hooked from the start. He draws you in to become a fly on the wall, as you watch everything unfold around you. Your teased into believing you know where the story going, only to be thrown another blast, not a red herring, as such, much cleverer and subtle than that.
Clever characterization and descriptions of characters, takes your mind to the summit of your imagination. Some you unquestionably love, even their foibles. Some you detest to the point of hate, making this an explosive read, from the first page to the last.
Marnie Hammond still struggles with her feelings of guilt, at the disappearance of her younger sister, some years previously. Just one of the threads running through this book. Which brings us to the point of her latest case involving, abduction, prostitution, drugs, extortion, corruption, blackmail and unimaginable cruelty. Not a book for the squeamish, but it all pertains to this cleverly choreographed story.
If your looking for a gritty British crime novel that sucks you into the essence of the story, with believable characters, this is it!
As soon as I saw the blurb for this book and that it was the latest from this author, I knew that it was definitely going to be a book for me - and when I saw the cover I knew that as soon as it arrived on my Kindle I would want to get started!
The characters, plot, pace setting, everything worked for me and I really enjoyed it and didn't want to put the book down. I am already a fan of this author's works and this is another excellent release from him. Very well written, held my attention and didn't let me go until the very end.
A massive five stars from me for this one - highly recommended!!
Gritty, fast-paced and with a well-thought plot, this is a great read.
The main character, DS Marnie Hammond, is really interesting and well developed, so you can perfectly understand why she makes the decisions she makes. I liked her so much that now I'm ready to go looking for the previous book in this series.
Marnie at age 11, watched her sister being snatched. She chased the man carrying her sister away and couldn't do anything to stop him. Now years later, she has become a Police Officer. As always, trying to find out what happened to her sister. Fast paced and enough crazy villains to keep you turning each page. A MUST READ!!
This is the second book in the DS Marnie Hammond series and what a book it is starting off with what can only be described as a brutal and Gorey murder and this sets the scene for the rest of the book it's certainly a gripping page Turner so if you like Gore this is the book for you I hope book three is soon out
I really enjoyed reading this book. Once again Detective Hammond is working against time to save another child. Then she learns of possible links to her long lost sister. You'll have to read the book to find out what happens. I'll be waiting for the next book to hit the shelves!
This is the 2nd book I have read and it did not disappoint me. The flow of the story was very good, following on from the first book with plenty of twists and turns yet again.
Cut the threads by Robin Roughley. An absolutely fantastic read. Loved the story. Marnie was my favourite character. Didn't like Wold or Rae at all. I wasn't sure about Conway. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author. 5*.
A solid second novel in the Detective Hammond series, Cut The Strings leads us further down the twisted history and its rammifications of Marnie Hammond's past abd how it continues to haunt her today.
Struggling with obvious PTSD and flashbacks, Marnie continues her work as Detective when a couple of young boys stumble upon a gory scene in an abandoned building. Little clues pile together and what seems to be a turf war between the town's drug and sex trafficking ring blows up into something bigger than even Detextive Hammond could anticipate.
This is a pretty solid read, if I do say so myself. Having not read the first novel, I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly it took me to catch the gist of her past and the crime that occurred. The mark of a good author is one who can make a novel in a series come across as a standalone for their reader.
That said. The secondary cast, and even the primary cast, still feel very hollow and two dimensional for a second novel. Though this is a mystery/thriller, you can't find yourself really rooting for anyone but one specific character and, by associating, the person they're desperately seeking-- not the protagonist herself. The details focus more on the horror and depravity of the antagonists, and their actions leave you feeling less horrified than they could, and should.
All in all, if the author focuses on and doubles down on characterization rather than the glaringly "look how BAD and EVIL and HEARTLESS these villains are!"? They will be on the fast track to best seller status and a new name and face in a competitive genre.
Cut the Threads is the second book in the Marnie Hammond series, First of all I have to say I freaking love the cover. I have waited a year for this book, having read Keep you Near and loving it. But then I spotted this cover and it made me want to read it more. I am happy to report that Robin doesn't disappoint and brings us one hell of an engaging, gritty, hard hitting read that is superbly written....grabbing me from the very first page. I am a sucker for a griping prologue and this one is brilliant I knew then, that I was in for a treat.
We follow the story of Marnie and her team in an investigation which they believe could be gang related after the remains of local hard man Tam Whitlow are found tied to a chair in a dilapidated building. OMG what a start to the story.
Cut the threads is one hell of a fast paced read which I read in one afternoon, I couldn't put it down. With scenes that will that are shocking and gruesome. This isn't for the faint hearted. I loved the whole gangster story line and fans of grit lit are seriously going to love this book.
DS Marnie is a brilliant character and we get to know more of her. But for those of you that haven't read the first book in the series this can be read has a standalone. The author gives us plenty of back ground information. Although this is a series to good not to miss, you can grab your copy of Keep You Near from amazon which is currently free right now.
So all in all Cut the Threads ticked all the boxes for me which I highly recommend giving it 5 stars.
Thank you to Sarah Hardy at Bloodhound for a copy and for inviting me to take take part in this fab tour.
This is a good sequel to to the first book in the series Keep You Near . Probably need to read them in order to fully appreciate this second novel in the series . This tale is certainly not for the squeamish as the violence is gruesome from the prologue onwards . Great characters , good plot , the execution of this tale has been masterfully done . Does contain some over ripe language , so be warned if swearing offends you .
Robin plunges the reader straight into the action, no holds barred in this story of a rather gruesome murder. Who is the man and why has been so brutally attacked? A world of extortion and a boss no one knows the name of. Kidnapped girls, a dodgy solicitor and rackets left right and centre, Fortunately DS Marnie has a strong stomach and nothing will put her off tracking down the perpetrators. Short snappy chapters keep the pace moving and there is plenty going on right from the start. Characters with depth that you take to -or not as the case maybe, but so well written that you could see this as a TV drama. Robin has the knack of bringing a story to life and characters you can believe in. This is a rather gory tale in parts with twists along the way yet handled so well. Marnie has her own demons. Will she ever put them to rest? Another wonderfully told story from the master of crime stories, every one has a depth so lacking in many others. I look forward to the next Robin Roughley instalment with baited breath. For other reviews please visit my blog: http://nickibookblog.blogspot.co.uk/
This is the second book in the DS Marnie Hammond series and the action starts in the first chapter and it doesn`t stop. When the torso of a local hard man, Tam Whitlow, is found, the first port of call for Marnie and DCI Reece`s team is Jimmy Rae, his boss. On the surface Rae appears to be a legitimate buisinessman however closer investigation reveals he is a gangster making money from drugs, prostitution and extortion. When Tam`s missing body parts are flung through Rae`s window the question is who had him killed, is it a rival gang or someone else? A missing father and daughter case, John and Rowan Hall starts to look like its connected and when Rowan`s godfather Tom Conway takes matters into his own hands the action really hots up. This is an exciting sometimes brutal crime thriller that I couldn`t put down. The body count rises quickly and as the list of suspects shortens the person responsible is finally revealed. A person bent on revenge! A person with links to Marnie`s past story which is why I would recommend reading the first book in the series. Thanks to Netgalley and Bloodhound books for the opportunity to read this as an ARC, a book worthy of 5* in my eyes.
An enticing and gruesome start to Marnie Book 2, which can be read as a stand alone, references to previous book are given.
I would recommend reading Keep You Near for full character development plus it is a great read.
Roughley lays down the plot lines like a rail track, and as you read on they connect and interchange.
The plot pace is extremely important in this book, and hurtling to the end the tangled web is woven and we see who is going to be snared in the trap. It is gritty, it has a feel of determination, it has action, plot and packs a punch within the pages.
This is one enthralling book with Marnie at the heart of the case.
She has tough decisions to make and at times her heart wins over her professional stance. This doesn't always warm you to her decisions, but you know why she is being driven and taking the route she does, so bring on Book 3!
A complicated case that makes compelling reading. With grit crime at the core of this read and the blurb that pulls you in, and the amazing cover. This is a book to have in your hands, on your kindle...however you like to read, just read!
I was a bit surprised that additional information regarding the events from the first book were mentioned at the beginning with no explanation as to how that information was obtained. There were a few too many people and plot lines, making it difficult to keep it all straight. I am not sure that all of it was tied up at the end. The characters, except for Marnie, remain one dimensional. I do understand the use of cliffhangers, but I think leaving us still hanging about the fate of one person is too much. I am writing this carefully so as not to give anything away, but how will we ever find out the truth? Another book with characters that so show intertwine with the I as in this book seems a bit much. Plot like we would get so confusing.
Thank you firstly to Net Galley and Bloodhound books for the chance to read this book. All I can say is wow, wow , wow. A brilliant fast paced book - I will not describe what it is about as you can read that in the description of the novel. This is the first book that I have read of this author but it certainly wont be the last. If you like your crime gruesome and violent look no further !!! I have no hesitation in recommending this 2nd book in the series and as other reviewers have said you don't really have to have read the first one but I for one will be going for that one next (but that's just the way I am !!) Enjoy.
The second book in the DS Marnie Hammond series and I would recommend reading book one first. This is a rollercoaster of a thriller! Tense, thrilling, well written, murders, machetes, kidnapped children...a great read by Robin Roughley. it kept me guessing right to the end and I look forward to the next in the series. An author to recommend to everyone who loves thrillers. My thanks to Net Galley for my copy.
Wow!!! Read this the second in the Marnie Hammond series in two sessions.Scary interesting brilliant storyline but not for the faint hearted.Would recommend to anyone who is into police procedures. If by any chance the author Robin Roughley is new to you then try his Lasser series .
Robin Roughley Cut the Threads’ the 2nd Marnie Hammond series. When murders are being committed the police think it is gang related. But when Tam Whitlaw turns up dead Marnie realises they have problems as Whitlaw turns up in bits. This book will keep you interested to the very end. 4* 28 February 2018.
