Total Immersion: Ten Years in France

Rate this book
Total Ten Years in France shares with you the fun, faux pas and frustrations of the expat experience in France whilst running a business, bringing up children and generally grappling with life in a foreign language.
Total Immersion is the sequel to Heads Above Staying Afloat in France. It picks up where the first book left off, namely with us about to start earning our living from our holiday cottage, three fishing lakes and team of laid-back trekking llamas. But despite all our thorough groundwork and careful preparation, things didn’t go quite as planned as you'll discover. We hurled ourselves enthusiastically down dead ends whilst simultaneously tripping up over red tape. We faced new and unforeseen challenges all the time, such as milking llamas, delivering stuck lambs and surviving five continuous weeks of severely sub-zero temperatures, to give just a few examples. It’s true to say there have been very few dull moments over the years. But with cheerful optimism – at least most of the time – we blundered on, and we’re still here. Not drowning, but waving.

I read this without reading the first instalment, Heads Above Water and must say as a stand alone book it works very well. It is great to share in the author's experiences, to witness all the ups and downs of running three fishing lakes, and catering to tourist as well as a menagerie of animals, without having to actually deal with the headaches that come with it. I have a great admiration for the whole family in moving to France and starting up their own business. I must confess I do know them personally. The author, a veteran of the writing industry is also a book editor and through her services have become acquainted. So my five star review has a slight bias, let's call it a 4.5 star review just to be fair. Saying that please don't look at my review as something dishonest, the book is excellent and informative. Anyone moving abroad to begin a new life/business would be wise to read a book like this to perhaps get a heads-up on the peaks and pitfalls such a change may incur. READ READ READ.

Delightful read

Stephanie and Chris Daggers moved to France with their three children and struggled to make a living with their farm while the children completed their education in the local schools. Well written and entertaining account of a delightful, nature-loving family who achieve hard-won success after many struggles and much hard work.
