Dreams of battle. A king offering a crown. Longing for a faceless archer. From a quiet life in Maine, Briana Brennan, landscape designer and bookworm, is led into the woods and through a tree, where she emerges a savior of the mythic kingdom of Uisneach. She must begin the journey through a land terrorized by the evil Lord Shamwa. Guided by the stalwart Lord Marshall Sigel and the handsome young bard, Silas of Cedarmara and mentored by a forest crone and a shapeshifting crow, she must discover how to use the black medallions they wear to unlock the curse and rescue the king. A magical map, mystical beings and a fantastic world all contribute something to the journey and to Briana’s growth as a woman, a warrior and a queen. Briana’s trek across Uisneach is a grand adventure that will hopefully bring her love and a happily ever after. Or will it?
For Heidi Hanley, reading and writing is like breathing. On her 5oth birthday, she got serious about turning her passion for writing into a goal to publish. The result is The Prophecy, Book One of the Kingdom of Uisneach series. The Runes of Evalon, the second book in the series, is due out in May Heidi lives in New Hampshire beside the Connecticut River with her husband and a Scottish terrier. She has enjoyed a career as a Registered Nurse, Interfaith minister and is currently serving as a Hospice chaplain. When not working, you will find her reading, sneaking away to Maine, or and in the garden with the birds and faeries.
Through totally believable and heartfelt characters, this book quickly becomes a shared journey. From the Prologue it lifts you into a mystery that compels you to follow. Briana, who had thought of herself as an ordinary young woman, easily draws you into her new world where you can feel, see, and experience all things through her - with her. It is an action/adventure story with a battle between the ways of magic vs. a malevolent tyrant who would destroy the beauty and peace of the land. Fantasy is woven through it, allowing us to live in this world of faeries, little people, talking crows, knights, a fascinating enchantress, a curse, and the wonder of it all through Briana's discoveries of them, and of the discovery of strength within herself. It is a powerful romance story with so much heart that you fall in love and feel the excitement, the newness of love, and also the heartbreak of love. This is a book I could not put down, as the quest became my own. Uisneach and its people became so very real to me, and I long to go back to visit with my best friends - characters that are so well written that they stand before you, beckoning you to follow them back into the adventure, back into the magic, back into the songs of the Bard, and back into the love. And also back into the ongoing mystery, for The Prophecy has not totally been fulfilled…
I have complicated feelings about this book. Part of the reason it's not a higher rating is because this book took me over a month to read on my Kindle app. I believe it was 10 or 11 hours when I started it. That's a little too long for me. Also, I didn't appreciate the love triangle. I get why it existed - in terms of plot - but I was annoyed that it was unnecessarily complicated. I felt that Hanley just separated Briana and Silas to incorporate angst, and I've had my fair share of love triangles in the past 5 or so years - enough is enough. I felt at times that Briana's journey was too easy, and a lot of the world, like the five medallion prophecy and the elves - was too much of a fantasy cliche.
The writing, however, was phenomenal, and the world-building really was quite in-depth. The dialogue could be cheesy at times, especially whenever someone spoke "words of wisdom," but for the most part I thought the plot was well-executed and the characters plentiful and distinct.
I can't decide if I'll read the next book or not whenever it comes out....maybe. For now, I'm a little too wary of such a long book with a romance that took over in the second half and became irritating.
What a treat it is to be taken on a journey to a land where anything is possible. Author Heidi Hanley' ability to create this beautiful, fantastical setting is astounding. Her characters are strong, powerful, beautiful, funny, scary, deep, and magical! The Prophecy (Kingdom of Uisneach) is both a fantasy novel as much as it is a story of a romance that will pull you in, break your heart, and lift you up once again with new perspectives that you never knew existed. Without giving too much away I have to give a shout out to the faeries who feel like old friends. It's as if Henley truly entered this mystical land and she has come home to report on all that she saw. Woven into the story is a deep and solid wisdom that would serve us all well to take into our hearts. We are all so very blessed that Henley has the writing skills to paint the whole story in such detail. Her set-up for Book 2 is so well done and I absolutely cannot wait to continue with this series. A fun and exciting must-read!
This story reads very much like a primary school fantasy at times then bounces over to YA, adult cultural references couched in a children's story was too creepy for me. I wish the editor had taken the writer in hand to get a more cohesive narrative. It has moments and elements of very good writing, it just failed to work as a complete package. Hopefully this author will get it right on another project.
I had put off reading this because I like being able to read right through a series. It was a really good book with beautiful imagery! I like the fact that it's not the cliche damsel in distress, actually, it's just about the opposite. I really enjoyed it 😊 and now I'm going to start the next one!
Beautifully written, engaging! Vivid writing style (I do not like love triangles so I'm not enjoying that element). Looking forwards to book 2 of the trigly!
I loved all three books in this series... and was sorry when I was done reading them (a sure sign of a 5 star rating!) The imagery was vivid, the characters were engaging and memorable, and the story arcs were great. I highly recommend all three Kingdom of Uisneach books.
