Martha Perez has written a novel of short stories offering a fascinating look into the lives of intriguing characters.

A husband and wife have their lives turned upside down while on a boating vacation.
Our choices have longterm effects.... Some good.... Some not so good.
A husband is pushed over the edge.
Dreams can be beautiful and horrifying. How close to reality are they?
Would you go back in time to change your past? Makes you think of the adage, 'Careful what you wish for.'
Can you enjoy an affair without ever meeting the person you are seeing?

The author has created a number of characters close to home. At times I felt like I knew them personally. This short story novel was fun to read and interesting. I've read three of Martha Perez's books already and look forward to more from this author.

Blunt-Force Drama!

Reader beware: Mature subject matter! If you’re not deterred by graphic erotica or strong language, by all means enter the dark. Be prepared to descend into the abyss of eight short stories that delve into dismal and disturbing scenarios drenched in the realism of dysfunction, disappointment, and despair. Throughout her storytelling, the author fluctuates between waxing exquisite and explicit—never mincing words.

Amidst their dilemmas, Martha Perez’ engaging characters ponder the answers to perplexing questions, such as:

When you choose the wrong path in life, are you destined to repeat the same mistakes?
What happens when a vulgar wife disrespects her husband?
How do dreams control our mind and affect our life?
Does engaging in sex talk on the Internet qualify as cheating in a relationship?

I highly recommend this short story collection which dares to trespass and linger in the dark. My favorite selection is “The Lie That Binds”. Boy, Ray, the dishwasher, can’t catch a break!

In The Dark was in one word, a SHOCKER. Martha Perez serves up a literary feast. But we advised, it’s not for the weak at heart, or the weak at anything for that matter. It’s sad. It’s scary. It’s erotic. It’s many things, but most of all it’s fun and entertaining. I don’t think I’ve ever found myself waiting with so much anticipation to get to the next page. It’s a collection of short stories, all very different but somehow connected. Five stars for sheer guts and courageous writing. I can’t wait to dig into Perez’s next piece of work.

To read this, is to feel the writers emotions.

Never play hide and seek with this gal! She knows too many dark places, but a lot of this darkness dwells in the amazing mind of this author. The emotions that drip from these pages are soaked in sadness and despair. Her grief is evident in the opening short story and is a powerful emotion that inspires this prolific writer.
We are given wonderful and totally realistic characters that let us easily relate to these stories of chills and thrills, suspense and sexuality.
I read the book twice and each time I discovered a different layer that added new insights.
If you seriously want to visit the dark side, them I strongly suggest that you pick up any of the books by Martha Perez. They are not for the faint hearted but at the end you will feel glad that you did. Sometimes you need to see the darkness to truly appreciate the light.
Five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars for quick read that needs to read again to understand the darkness that dwells special minds.

This very short anthology of short stories features characters touched by, and trying to cope with the darkness that has touched their lives in some way. Some of the stories are heartbreaking, and some are simply chilling, such as "The Boathouse," where a psychiatrist takes on the horrors of a patient's life as her own. Others, such as "The Lie that Binds" contain a heavy dose of irony, as a man constantly belittled and beaten down by his wife kills her accidentally, only to end up dead himself.

Most of the stories are written at least in part in stream of consciousness, where the characters are speaking to themselves, without proper punctuation or grammar. While I find this part of the author's design unusual at first, the effect of the characters communicating this way made for a powerful statement on their emotions and state of mind.

This book, which took only an hour or so to read, nevertheless conveyed a range of emotions in short stories that were so touching that as a reader I couldn't help but be drawn in. In my opinion this work is worth five stars, and I will be checking out the author's other works in the future.

Sensational quick read! With a series of vignettes, the reader will become encapsulated in well-developed characters’ lives. Because of this, Perez’s skillful and artful writing transcends the reader into macabre places of humanity and to an edge of true darkness. More so, the well-written, eloquent stories allows the reader to briefly peer into another malevolent world on another dimension. What a great short story novella!

Martha Perez shines again!

As a fan of the talented author, Martha Perez, I have been eagerly awaiting the release of her latest work, ‘In The Dark’, and I was not disappointed.

This was a real page turner for me. A collection of short, dark stories filled with suspense and many unexpected twists and turns along the way. I couldn’t put it down. The perfect Halloween treat!

Author Perez writes from the heart and ‘I Can’t Say Goodbye’ certainly brought a tear to my eye.

For me, this is a huge 5 star read.

Some interesting concepts

In general, I sensed an honesty in the author's storytelling and feel that she writes at a deeply emotional level which is commendable. She presents interesting concepts in these short stories but I found the writing rough and dialogue skills need work to create more believable interaction between the characters.
