After the announcement of the imminent end, fourteen year old April approaches her parents with a bucket list in hand. Realising that their own goals take too much time or are too materialistic, they decide to complete their daughter's list together. It includes items such Get a tattoo, Dye my hair, Kiss a boy in the rain, Walk in the road, Open my eyes underwater, Do karaoke, and Show Mum and Dad how much I love them.
There are parties and shopping sprees and stolen kisses in pubs and bunkers and stargazers and people who shut all their doors and dance in the dark.
"Cara Compass' Keep Going is a most welcome addition to the apocalypse genre." - Steve De Jarnatt, writer/director of the cult film Miracle Mile.
“It is with great sadness that we must inform you there is an unstoppable, extinction-level meteorite headed for Earth. Multiple studies done in private over the previous days and weeks have confirmed our worst fears - there is absolutely no way of lessening the impact or diverting it off course.”
I’ve been trying to find the words to do this book justice but I think me giving 5 stars speaks for itself! Let me just start by saying I backed Keep Going on kickstarter all the way back in May, so I am immensely happy that it’s finally coming into the world. Since September, I’ve been in a horrible book slump (I blame reading a very large book within the space of a few days) but Keep Going had the power to bring me out of that. I love a good apocalyptic novel but Keep Going is something else. The writing is amazing and unique and flows so nicely throughout, I grew attached to the characters and really felt for them. Not to mention how much of a change it is to read about the actual lead up, rather than oh my god I’m suddenly the only human alive everyone else is a zombie trying to kill me buildings are on fire what am I going to do? (though I do love those books.) This was such a special and heartwarming book, I didn’t lose interest once and was so eager to find out how it ends, despite never wanting it to end. I genuinely can’t find a fault, Cara really has a talent. Whenever I read a book I have a habit of taking a photo or a screenshot of parts that really stand out to me and I took a whole bunch while reading Keep Going. It’s worth mentioning that this book even brings up asexuality and aromantic-ness which is just wonderful! I went through a whole range of emotions and I would recommend everyone to read this amazing debut.
“She kisses him, and somewhere behind them April memorizes the instructions of a steam cleaner she’ll never use, and a woman sits at her works counter and waits for the world to come to her.”
JAN 29TH: RELEASE DAY!!! Honestly, I didn’t think it was possible for me to love this book even more, and then I read it again. I just adore it, and it fills me with so much emotion. Forget simply getting attached to the characters, I am attached to the book as a whole. Please, please check this book out and fall in love with it as much as I have.
Bundles of fun, touching, and awfully morish. A real stroke of genius is that the novel starts four days from the end of the world, this is both a short enough time to make it imminent, but long enough for perspective, narrative, and humour. All of which are deftly woven into this tale.
Brilliant, probably the most upbeat book about the pre-apocalypse I've ever read, it was light-hearted and funny but still tackled serious topics and had plenty of representation.
Great book and good, thought out story telling. My only criticism is that it needs an editor to go over it! A few sentences/bits of dialogue don't make sense and there are a lot of spelling/grammar mistakes. Also towards the end there's 2 points when a character made a comment about only having 3 days to live when it was the day before/day of the event. And there was a huge number 3 halfway down a page and I was just a bit like ????
Anyway, the actual story itself is great and worth reading, just a few minor mistakes that called for an editor.
A very well written and easy to read book. Once I had started, I didn't want to put it down! Described as a coming of age story, I actually think it is much more than that. The main story line, that the world is ending in four days, really makes you think. It is emotional without being sugary, and the emphasis is placed on family relationships. I will certainly look out for any other books by this talented young author.
