If you like books like Fifty Shades of Grey (E.L James), Bared to You (Sylvia Day), Ugly Love (Colleen Hoover), and teacher student romance, then you'll love book three in the best-selling Ivy Lessons series.
Will forbidden love last?
When drama student, Sophia Rose, falls for her teacher - the dark and brooding Hollywood star, Marc Blackwell, she has no idea where their forbidden love affair will end. Drawn into Marc's shadowy world of strict discipline and control, Sophia awakens a secret erotic self she never knew existed - and finds herself deeply, obsessively in love.
Now Marc wants Sophia to be his forever. But Sophia can't commit to marriage without her family's approval, and her father doesn't trust Marc - yet. Sophia's father says he will only approve of the marriage if Marc and Sophia can pass the ultimate test. Three months apart.
Can Sophia and Marc's relationship stand the separation? Or will Marc's jealousy and Sophia's friendship with co-star, Leo Falkirik, drive them apart?
I am not quite sure what it was about this particular installment that just felt a little bit off - different than the last two. I have to admit I had higher expectations for the last installment.
Sophia and Marc have struggled through the media of their coupling and the danger of Getty; but now they face a whole new challenge. As Marc proposes to Sophia the challenge of gaining not only her father's approval but his blessing becomes a problem. Now let's just say at some point Sophia needed to put her foot down. Her father was unreasonable and the way she just bowed down was unnerving. He claims she might be jumping into something too soon - but is merely projecting his own choices onto his daughter. He is a mess who can't function and should be the last person giving out pointers. I ended up feeling nothing but anger towards her father and the way Sophia followed orders like a kid made most of my connection to her from the other books fall off. I am not sure why this was a route taken; I think this was the main thing that really turned me off of this book.
Now - although we have the ass of a father adding to the drama, we now also have the fall out from Getty's arrest. As Marc and Sophia spend three months apart - he must protect her from a distance.
There also seemed to be less of the sexy time in this one...I know with most of the book being them not seeing each other it is to be expected, but it just felt odd. This was just all around a let down for the conclusion of the story. I think the father in this just really pissed me off to the point where I just never was able to focus on the story. I sort of want to punch him in his face right now.
Oy.....this book was such a disappointment to me, was counting down the pages til it ended, had I not read earlier stories would probably have DNFed it. It should be a crime for books like this to market themselves matching he tastes for those who liked Fifty Shades - NOT EVEN CLOSE to that category.
Sophia is extremely weak in this last installment, displaying a lot of insecurity and showing poor judgment when being taken advantage of by her family. Why would she easily acquiesce to her father's request to stop seeing Marc without much of a fight? This demand coming from a man who is selfish, neglectful of both his children, and who has a history of making poor decisions himself? And why does Marc not display his dominant alpha side and fight to stay with Sophia?
And then add in this element of PAIN, won't go into detail here but needless to say an oddly comical addition to this conclusion. I felt it bordered on fantasy fiction towards latter part of novel. "What PAIN did to you" was such a hilarious play on words and so completely out of the box unrealistic and un-relatable. It completely broke the connection to the story because it challenged the reader to understand the plot (and not in a good way.)
Lastly, cherry on top was the distasteful really intense BDSM scene involving a cane at the end on the night before.....well, an important night. So not romantic to me at all how that was written.
And seriously, 80+ chapters? What's the point in dissecting every two pages into a chapter?
Thankfully was not too long, read in a couple of hours, but geesh, so dissatisfying....:-(
Because of real life, it took me a few days to read this, maybe that'swhy I wasn't that into it. Quite frankly I was wanting it to be over
The demand her father made so that she would receive his blessing on a marriage was ridiculous.
I thought Marc kinda got pushed into the background. And Sohpia just kept moping "why does he love me? I love him so much, I can't stand to be apart from him," blah, blah.
I really had high hopes for Bound By Ivy, the final (I think) installment of the Devoted series. While I really enjoyed book #1 and #2, I found myself pretty disappointed with third offering. Often times I found myself willing the book to be over. With writing there's always the adage, "Show don't tell" and I found this book to do the exact opposite. In many places the dialogue felt a little robotic to me as well.
God I luvd this series so much the story is great so much happens that I hated puttin them down the characters r al great except some haha but I luv Marc an Sophia relationship gets strong in this book they face so many ups an down but they get through they great great books xxx
I liked this series. This is the third book in the series about Marc and Sophia. They meet at an School for Acting.
I was really intrigued becaue of the student-teacher romance (forbidden) but I wished there was more of that in the book. There is only a very small part of the series that is focussed on de S-T relationship. I was hoping to see more about the issues they had to deal with as a S-T. Like keeping it a secret and al of that.
But besides that, the story was very good, the writing could have been better but it didn't bother me that much. Maybe the writing itself wasn't that good because I read the translation (Dutch).
"Bound by Ivy" is the final installment in the "Devoted" trilogy by J. Lerman/S. Quinn. My expectations were, sadly, not fully met with the end of the series. I love it when a series ties whatever loose ends need to be tied and give a great send-off to the characters that readers have grown to love. While there were loose ends that were tied and
There were moments that I found myself sighing in disbelief and frustration at the nonsensical choices that Sophia Rose was making throughout most of the book. The idiotic limitations that her father put on her relationship with Marc just so he would give his blessing. I mean, come on. She was being treated like a child because she allowed herself to be put in that situation. She's an adult and yet she was spending most of her time in the novel trying to please everyone else. She also has serious self-image issues and you would have thought that by the third novel, she would have gotten over majority of them.
There were several typographical and grammatical errors in the book but the story was still somewhat strong and interesting (especially with the addition of more suspense, thanks to PAIN). The characters remained memorable but Marc remains my favorite among them. ^.^ I'm giving "Bound by Ivy" three out of five stars but the entire series gets an overall rating of four out of five from me. ^.^
Let me start off with my problem with this story, Sophia..."does he love me, why does he love me, he can have any girl he wants" Good Lord girl grow a spine already. Sophia Rose...side note: wasn't that a title for some kind of exorcist movie? May be not, May be I just wanted someone to exorcise her self doubt right out of her.
Other than that I enjoyed the series mostly because of Marc, hot, rich, overprotective, alpha male...what's not to like? Some action, some suspense and some spankings.
So due to my problem with Sophia I'm teetering between 3.5 and 4 stars. I just wanted her to be stronger. There were times she was strong but she just flipped flopped too much between sniveling and being strong. IMO
I tried for the third time to like Sophia, didn't happen. And the whole letting her father basically dictate her life? Pissed me off. She needed to grow a damn backbone, it was like reading about a puppy dog crying and crying. UGH! I grew to love Marc more though, he showed a good side to him. I wish the wedding scene wasn't so rushed though.
Having a hard time even finishing this one and I did like the 1st two. Think I'll just read the last page to see what happened. Something is just not meshing for me like the other two books did.
Sigh and Sigh again. Why? Simple. The first sigh is because I am closing the book (in my case closing my iPad cover) because the book is over. The second sigh is because as the little girl in the credit card commercial says “…you want more. You just want more...” SKQ is one of my favorite authors and with each book she delivers.
Bound by Ivy is the third installment of the Devoted series. Where just as The Ivy Lessons and Where the Ivy Grows you learn more about each character and fall a little more in love with each one. Some characters you’re cheering them on, others leave you questioning, one leaves you hoping they get help that they desperately need, and the others you want to strangle yourself. With each installment you feel like you are learning new things about the friends you’ve made, the girl you come to love (Soph), the man that you want in your life (Blackwell), and the family that these friends, Soph, and Blackwell create.
Without giving too much away here’s what you get: -you learn about Blackwell’s sister - you learn some peoples true colors -you find that sometimes love can overcome all obstacles -new love emerges -others have career changing events.
I love all of SKQ’s books simply for the fact that they don’t seem to follow the stereotypical ‘like Fifty Shades of Grey’ story line. She writes with an eloquence that is simply her own. So when you are reading her books you don’t gets that feeling like ‘oh, I’ve read this book before the only thing that has changed is the characters, maybe the scenery (since so many seem to take place in New York now), and the author’. SKQ delivers with her genuine creativity, powerful way with words, events, and ideas. So I will end this review with the same note that I have given in the other reviews. If you are looking for another Fifty Shades this isn’t the book for you. If you are however looking for a REAL book, that is not on the verge of being considered pornography, REAL characters, that have depth beneath the surface, that face real issues that at times you can relate to, and a book that will leave you wanting more the Devoted series and SKQ is the author for you.
I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT INSTALLMENT OF THE DEVOTED SERIES!!! SKQ YOU NEVER LET ME DOWN!!!!
I love strong dominant men like Marc Blackwell! (They make the best book boyfriends) He was always ready to step in a save the day and he was also understanding in certain compromising situations.
Sophia’s character was a bit annoying at times but did have some redeeming qualities. She was always wandering about Marc and why he loved her when he was so rich and could have anyone he wanted and so on. At the end though…. It was the simple things in life that brought her pleasure. It wasn’t about the money or the expensive items which made me like her even more. It showed she wasn’t with him for his money. She truly loved Marc for who he was.
The friendship that Sophia was able to bring Annabel really showed what an incredible character she is. She reached out to Annabel even when she was unable to be around Marc. She tried to help her gain her son back and succeeded in the end. She knew Annabel wouldn’t have left the rehab facility over the “bad news” she received and went out searching for her when the facility had said she left. Sophia kept faith in Annabel. FABULOUS!
I have to be honest…. I was worried about Leo’s character and what road the author was going to lead us down with him. I think though that Leo was able to get his HEA along with most of the other characters in the books! He was able to develop a true friendship with Sophia and protect her from some of the craziness that was going on.
I hated that Sophia’s father put Marc and her through a three month separation but in reality I think it brought them closer in the end. It made them realize they didn’t want to live without each other.
I don’t even know where to being with PAIN…. Let’s just say… they got what they deserved!
Overall, I really enjoyed the story and was thrilled with the ending!
“As long as I’m with you, there’s nowhere I’d rather be.”
“I would describe us as totally, obsessively in love,”
“Oh? What would you call me?” ‘My soul mate. The only woman in the world who could break down my barriers.’
*May contain spoilers* Let me start off by saying, I have read the two books prior to this one and LOVED THEM. Book one had me hooked. I kept thinking of how Sophia was like the Little Princess up in her room with the secret money and gifts and how Marc was her Dark Knight. Then I read book 3.... What in the world happened. When did we enter the dark ages, who agrees to a trial separation for a wedding blessing? What is this 1920? Marc, who is so in control agrees to this and goes along with it the whole time? I am just like, WHAT? And then Cecile and the whole crazy PAIN thing, seemed so rushed... If Marc had the security he had, how could dumbass Cecile be around dropping notes un-noticed and throwing pig hearts at the window? SERIOUSLY? And then the whole Cecile is pregnant and then suddenly not, it was liked they rushed the last half of the book to tie up lose ends and just rushed it.
And when Sophia's step mother left, everyone was surprised? And suddenly dad can't do anything at all. What a horrible parent- I am sorry, but Sophia came in and saved her dad's ass with Sammy and the house and then he is going to tell Marc and Sophia they can't see each other for 3 months? Anyone else think that dad just wants to lock Sophia into being his house slave for 3 months so she can cook, clean, and care for his other kid?
Marc as always was intense and dark, but it was like the fight wasn't there. I am still shocked that he was agreeable to just distance himself from Sophia. Of course, he suffers from his own self-loathing so he wants to let Sophia see if she can find someone better since he doesn't feel the worth.
But then Sophia is constantly doubting everything, it drove me bonkers!! Now, that being said, I finally got to see Marc and Sophia have the HEA, which I was glad for. I was glad that they had that moment after all the drama and separation.
2.5 stars- I rounded up. I stuck with this series, even though I spent the majority of it rolling my eyes. Honestly, I almost stopped reading in the first book when she was bemoaning leaving her village when she went to University to study acting... I mean, seriously, was she planning on wasting her college education? Because I'm pretty sure she would've needed to leave to take jobs, like the one with the play. I mean, she She wasn't, exactly, being realistic. I was happy that Sophia finally seemed to grow a pair, but she was still trying to be everything to everyone and enabling their shitty behavior- so unhealthy. Especially
I agree with another reader that I skimmed whole parts of the book because it was SO telling that I was zoning out. I didn't feel very emotionally connected to Sophia in this one. I think J. Lerman can write better than this, and I can't wait to see what she has in the works for the future.
I liked the ending, but wished she would've gotten an apology
Other than that, I loved Leo and, of course, Marc.
2.5 STARS~ I LOVE Marc Blackwell and his dominating ways but I feel that I didn't get enough of him in this installment. Instead, Sophia and Marc spend a lot of time apart as a result of her father's stupid idea that they need to spend time apart and not rush into things and make sure that they're a right match. Sophia's father is a sorry excuse for a Dad after having left her to take care of herself when her mother passed, forcing her to move out to a shed after he remarried, then telling her she needed to move because they needed to rent out said shed for additional income. His sudden concern for his daughter is too little too late, and Sophia really should have made it very clear to him that she is, in fact, an adult and can make her own decisions.
The PAIN storyline was interesting, and Marc's need to protect and care for Sophia was great, but Sophia kept making stupid decisions, and I just couldn't get into the story as much as I had hoped. I just felt that this was a lackluster end to the series considering how strong it started out in The Ivy Lessons.
8/7/2013 ~ I stand corrected, apparently, there will be another book, a chance at redemption for the series. I just hope we get more of Marc & his dominating ways instead of a far fetched plot as in Bound By Ivy.
This was a great conclusion. I thought that the way the book was written was kind of slow paced, but then it got interesting. This is the third installment of the Devoted series. This book is about the forbidden romance between Actor Marc Blackwell, and his student, Sophia. Throughout the book, I began to realize more of who they are as characters.
Sophia is a patient girl, who wants to be the best actress possible. Marc is the overprotective, arrogant boyfriend, who wants to continue to protect her throughout her life. They have amazing chemistry. They have a bunch of romantic/steamy scenes in this book. Overall, a great read.
Sad to see the end of that trilogy, will miss Marc and Sophia.
Only minus point in when I was reading it was the Diaper bit it is a UK person using British language. So i would have preferred it to have been nappies. It was my only complaint.
I read this only to finish the series, and it was free with Amazon Prime. I am so on the fence with this book. At times, it was HOT.. Then not. It annoyed me with her Dad and his terms. I felt like it was a toss up between a YA novel with each flip of the page. I could tell where the author was trying to go. Overall, it was ok.
Wow, I'm exhausted, could not put this down, it was such a roller coaster of emotional turmoil, prayed for a HEA, wasn't sure would get one, but all good eventually, great read, highly recommended
When I first read this story 10 years ago it became a favourite of mine. I guess over the years my reading tastes have changed because I’ve been left feeling rather disappointed. Yes, there are some elements of the storyline that I still love, however, some I have come to dislike. For example, there is an element of predictability in the scenes between Marc and Sophia. I do feel I witnessed more of a connection between the couple in this third book but not enough to make me truly believe their feelings for each other. I am not a fan of Sophia, and her behaviour and personality at times has made me cringe. I feel more depth to the characters and storyline would improve everyone’s reading experience.
Saying this, whether it be nostalgia or a genuine like, I have overall enjoyed rereading this trilogy of novels and I do want to continue with the series as I had originally not read past the first three books so I am intrigued to discover what happens next for Sophia and Marc.
I really liked the first two books, but this one was kind of lame. Why would a 22 year old woman, who basically raised herself after her mother died, listen to her father who now has trouble taking care of his baby when he tells her to stay away from her boyfriend for three months? It's dumb. Then, she is told that the group that wants to kidnap her has her brother but she doesn't even think of calling to see if he's ok before she runs into the arms of the kidnappers. I love the characters but this plot was not good. .
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I'm not too keen on all the pleasure pain bits, or the many anal bits lol but the characters are good, it's easy to read and I have been hooked reading this series. A couple of spelling mistakes or missing grammar here and there but overall a very fun read
Book 3 was as good as the first 2 books in the series.
I loved the characters, (the good, and the bad). Suzie knows how to bring them to life, on the page, and is able to pull you into the story, and keep you there till the end, and leaves you wanting more.
Sometimes the whole plot of this part of the story get me a little angry and I found myself in disbelief by the simple fact that the father who take so little in growing up of his doughter has the right to makes such ammends just to give his blessing. I dont understand but OK. The mystery plot otherwise was great. All in all, just like the previous parts of the story very interesting reading.
