Rate this book

This is a very fat book, and I read it slowly for several months. I am so glad that I spotted it in a bookstore accidentally. I learned so much about генерал Петро Григоренко from it! He is an amazing personality, and it is impossible to describe shortly even the key facts and observations about him: everything is so incredible and interesting! I respect this person more and more every day, and can only wonder why I wasn’t especially familiar with this prominent figure before, why it always slipped from my view.

I do recommend learning about Петро Григоренко from any source you find convenient (not necessarily this particular book, but please read something else if you can). This is a man everyone should know about, and I consider his personality no less important than Солженицын’s or Шаламов’s, for example, but Петро Григоренко is also a much nicer, open-minded, kinder human, in my opinion. When I was reading the book, I wanted to talk to people about Петро Григоренко and ask them what they know about him and convince them to learn more. I wondered why we have so little memory about him now, why there are no monuments or museums dedicated to him, etc. It’s so unfair and strange.

This book consists of various materials: articles, letters, short essays, memoirs, documents; there are materials where other people talk about Петро Григоренко, and materials written by Петро Григоренко himself. They are not comprehensive, of course, and each concerns only some little aspect or period of time, but gradually you discover a magnificent intelligence and powerful personality from them. The book also opens a major window into the reality of Soviet dissident movement in the 1960-80s and presents it as something very logical and systematic, something that you respect and appreciate rather than something that confuses or frustrates you.

Also, Петро Григоренко and his attitude to people and society, his internal power and dedication are especially important for us, today’s Ukrainians. He is a great role model and inspiration in the world of powerful dark forces around us.

Immediately after this book, I started reading memoirs by Петро Григоренко, which is an equally fat and interesting book, and again I enjoy it immensely. Such a great personality!
