Abby Klein was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She earned her teaching credentials at Dartmouth College, where she majored in psychology and education. She then went on to earn her master's degree in reading and language development at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Currently she teaches in the same public elementary school she attended as a child in the Los Angeles area. She has been a kindergarten and first-grade teacher there for more than fifteen years and is very involved in the school community, as both a teacher and a parent. Her two young children also attend the school where she teaches. In addition, she is a “teacher-leader” in her district, and over the years, she has presented many staff development workshops both at the district level and at her school site that centered on reading, writing, and literacy. She has been a presenter at national conferences as well.

In her first published series, Ready, Freddy!, Klein brings just the right amount of true-to-life humor and drama. She brings young readers a fresh voice, a great sense of humor, and a unique perspective on the trials and tribulations of first grader Freddy Thresher. Utterly authentic and drawn from real experience in the classroom, Abby Klein knows exactly what first graders are thinking.

She lives in Los Angeles, California, with her husband, two children, and three dogs. She thinks there's nothing better than a good book, and she loves reading aloud to children.

Watch out, Junie B., there's a new kid on the block! It's Freddy Thresher, a 1st grader who knows it's a jungle out there. The sixth in a new series by an elementary school teacher who's seen it all.

"I have a problem. A really, really, big problem. I keep having these nightmares about a vampire."
Freddy's horrible nightmares are keeping him awake all night. Now he's so tire...more

In my opinion, this book is a great book for early readers as it uses simple language throughout. At some point every child has nightmares about something. This book is about the nightmares Freddy (the main character) has and the fear he experiences from them. One of Freddy's friends experienced the same thing and helps him come up with solutions to get rid of these vampire nightmares. He uses problem solving techniques from his family and friends to overcome his fear of these vampire nightmares. This is a great book for children to relate to because most children have nightmares and have trouble sleeping at night because of them. In the early elementary years, I would use this book in my classroom and emphasize that it is okay to be afraid, and when there is a problem/fear one is experiencing, sometimes we have to be brave and problem solve.

The book is about freddy having a bad dream.
I think other people will like it.
It was funny.
I learn from the book that dream police will make your bad dreams go away.
I would like to read it again.
I would like to read more books from the same author.
My favorite part was that freddy got stuck to his food.

This is a wonderful book about a first grader named Freddy. He's having trouble getting his nightmares stopped until he realizes how his family can help. This is a great book that reminds us how important family is.

My Grade 2 teacher first read this to me. The only thing I remember from this book is that garlic scares away vampires. I continued with the series after.

Christopher borrowed this book from the school library, and we both really enjoyed it. Right away we related to the relationship between the mom and Freddy and Freddy’s struggles going to sleep at night because of some fears. He was enjoyed this book so much that he actually wanted to finish the book. It took us three weeks, but he got through it all. I tried to follow the classroom example and ask him questions about the book after he finished his reading time. I was surprised by the details he remembered. Freddy is afraid of a vampire coming into his room at night. He seeks advice from his friends and tries garlic and nailing the window shut. It was a cute story, and perfect for Christopher in subject matter.

Screening for my 7 year old before he reads the book so this is a "Mom" review looking for inappropriate things. :)

What's in there:
*Name calling between the siblings and the kids at school - which is very common in the Freddy books.
*Words we don't let him say that are used: "butt"

Lesson:
*If your child struggles with nightmares, make sure you can finish reading this during the day. The nightmare issue gets solved by the end but it might create nightmares of vampires if stopped midway through! I hadn't heard of Klein's suggestion before - very creative way to deal with nightmares.

Overall, none of this is going to keep me from letting my son read it. The Freddy books are pretty age-appropriate but for parents that let their kids read blindly, here's a bit of what they're getting!

This was my first encounter with the Ready, Freddy! series and while I can see why students find him entertaining, as an adult, I just found his personality to be annoying. His parents treat him way younger than they should, and there are far too many insults that get slung from his peers throughout the series. I also found the writing to be way too simplistic, even for this grade level, and had difficulty creating comprehension questions with depth. When I asked my students what they thought of him, they loved him! I think his problems are realistic to 8-year-olds and his ways in which he tries to solve them are comical for this age group. I would recommend this series to my students because it is a perfect transition from easy readers to chapter books, however, I do not think I will pick up another myself.

Freddy is having nightmares about vampires, but is keeping it a secret from his family. First he tries garlic powder and then he tries nailing his window shut. Finally his family finds out about the nightmares and his sister helps him train his stuffed animals to be Dream Police. This works and he has happy dreams!

This book was okay, but I didn't care for the bickering among the characters. They would call each other names, like "brat" or "spaghettihead".

I really enjoyed this book! A young boy finds himself suffering from nightmares and a pesky sister. He tries many remedies to frighten the nightmares away but can't seem to accomplish anything. Writing with great humor and wonderful illustrations, any young reader should enjoy this short book. A great book!

This series follows Freddy, a first grader, going through various obstacles. These are also chapter books.

I chose this series of chapter books, because like Judy Moody this series follows a first grader through his problems he faces. I also chose this series, because I felt that it would appeal to the boys more and that they would be more excited to read it.

This book would be great to read to or with younger students. Many of us have experienced those sleepless nights due to nightmares or other random situations. I think my students will be able to relate to the character and learn from his experiences with nightmares.

Sam loves these- he thinks they're hilarious. They're chapter books, but easy enough (take him about an hour) that he can read them in one sitting and doesn't get discouraged or bored.

Freddy keeps having nightmares about vampires. He had a real tool box and tools so he mailed his window shut so the vampires couldn't get him.
