Μια ακόμη εξαιρετική νουάρ ιστορία από την Λατινική Αμερική, με έναν ακόμη ιδιαίτερο πρωταγωνιστή. Κλασικό του είδους του και γεμάτο ατάκες που κάθε συγγραφέας που θα 'θελε να αντιγράψει τον Τσάντλερ θα ζήλευε.

I quite enjoyed the other novel in the series that has been translated. I did not enjoy this one quite as much. Heredia still has his cat, Simenon, and he still reads detective novels. At one point he went into a book store to find a Patricia Highsmith novel. So you could say Detective Heredia is definitely my kind of person, yes? Well, only sometimes. Did he always drink this much or did I just not remember? With enough imagination, one could get drunk on the fumes just from reading this!

The early part of the novel was the hard-boiled detective novel I anticipated. The cadence isn't quite the same I know.

After a bit, I entered the City Bar to drink a beer. I took the envelope from my jacket and reread the address of my apartment on Calle Aillavilú, close to Estación Mapocho, in a neighborhood that embraced me every day with the smells of fried food and drunks. The apartment had three rooms, in which I had spilled out my books, a metal desk, and a poster of Romy Schneider, who still had the kindness to smile down at me. The other things there were my cat, Simenon, and my unalterable destiny to stick my nose into other people’s lives.

By the midpoint, however, it had become a thriller. It is a story of international arms dealing. Journalists should keep there noses out of such clandestine business! I did have a hard time keeping up with some of the names and how the skulduggery was being accomplished, but Heredia managed to follow the thread. He had the help of a couple of friends to give him those threads. For anyone doing round the world challenges or some such, it's worth noting this is set entirely in Santiago, Chile. Just 3-stars for me, but I'm not sorry to have spent the time with it.

I have read some Latin American fiction but this was my first venture into Chilean literature. This was a noir crime story tangled up with Chilean politics post Pinochet as well as international arms dealings. That’s a lot to handle, and having some knowledge of modern Chilean history is a definite plus in appreciating this book.

This was not the first book in the series but I didn’t find that an obstacle. Heredia is a private investigator who responds too late to an invitation to meet up with a long absent romantic interest. Her death opens a Pandora’s box of intrigue: illegal arms deals, the CIA, dirty cops, and the invisible network left from Pinochet’s years of terror. The story moves at a good pace with enough unknowns to keep the reader hooked.

Unlike many of the noir crime stories of the 40s & 50s, Angels & Loners has more intellectual meat. I felt very ignorant on the topic of South American modern literature. And while I have a bit of a working knowledge of the Pinochet years, I haven’t kept up on the politics of modern Chile. Given the rise of nationalism across the globe and the increasing strength of the military industrial complex, this book is still pertinent today and not just in Chile.

¿¡Han escuchado esa idea de que algo es tan tonto, que es brillante? o ¿es tan genial que llega a ser ridículo?
Pues bien, nuestro personaje principal, Heredia, y todas las circunstancias que construye Díaz Eterovic, son tan, pero tan pesimistas y deprimentes, que finalmente sus obras terminan generando una inexorable sensación de optimismo. En Ángeles y Solitarios, el mejor libro que he leído del autor hasta ahora, esto es especialmente fuerte. La investigación del asesinato de un antiguo y profundo amor de Heredia es una excusa para plantear temas político-sociales potentes y multidimensionales, los que siguen vigentes hoy, a más de 15 años de su primera publicación.

En términos narrativos, es más lento que la mayoría de las novelas de Díaz Eterovic, con escenas que, aparentemente, son innecesarias. Sin embargo, viendo el bosque completo puedo decir que ninguna de ellas estuvo ahí por azar y que tenían una razón de ser.

Se lo recomiendo a todo el mundo, pero si estás pasando por una época depresiva o u poco menos optimista, sugeriría dejar su lectura para otro momento.

The best Chilean Detective story I've ever read

Primer libro de la serie Heredia que leo y mis impresiones son mixtas. Hace tiempo tenía ganas de leer una novela policial made in Chile y lo cierto es que Diaz Eterovic se erige como uno de los principales estandartes a nivel nacional. Es fácil notar la erudición del autor sobre el género que lo encumbró, ya que en las primeras páginas nos arroja citas y referencias que dejan ver lo nutrida de su biblioteca.
La trama bebe directamente de historias seminales de la literatura noir y no lo esconde: Heredia, un melancólico detective recorre las calles decadentes de Santiago, se involucra en un caso que resulta ser más grande de lo que espera, hay muerte, hay violencia y hay sexo. El final, como buena novela policial, nos deja un sabor amargo: los poderosos nunca pierden y las pequeñas victorias son nuestro único consuelo.
Novela entretenida, pero que no arriesga. Más allá de las acertadas críticas al periodo en que fue escrita (la angustiante "transición" democrática), Díaz no innova, tanto los personajes como los diálogos parecen sacados directamente de una película de Howard Hawks, lo cual no está mal, pero cuando se aborda un género en el que está (casi) todo dicho, la experimentación debe ser piedra angular de la obra, lo que acá no se ve.

Εκεί θα συναντήσουμε τον ιδιωτικό ντετέκτιβ Ερέδια και ένα συναρπαστικό νουάρ μυθιστόρημα ξεκινά.
Ο δικτάτορας Πινοσέτ, έπειτα από δημοψήφισμα,  έχει αποχωρήσει από την προεδρία της χώρας, παραμένοντας όμως επικεφαλής του στρατού. 
Ο Ερέδια είναι ένας άνθρωπος πιστός στις αρχές και στους φίλους του. Αντικαθεστωτικός, πολιτικοποιημένος, αντιδραστικός, αθεράπευτα ρομαντικός και ευαίσθητος. Στο διαμέρισμα του ζει με τον γάτο του, Σιμενόν, με τον οποίο συνομιλεί και έτσι μας δίνονται οι σκέψεις του Ερέδια και ο αντίλογος στον ίδιο του τον εαυτό.
Όταν ένα πολύ αγαπημένο του πρόσωπο δολοφονείται, αναλαμβάνει δράση και μια σειρά δολοφονιών αποκαλύπτεται. 
Ο Ερέδια, με τη βοήθεια φίλων του, εισέρχεται στον κόσμο του εμπορίου όπλων και ανακαλύπτει τον παρασκηνιακό ιστό της πολιτικής και στρατιωτικής εξουσίας στη Χιλή και τις διεθνείς διασυνδέσεις της.
Με τον τρόπο αυτό ο συγγραφέας μας περιγράφει την πολιτική και κοινωνική κατάσταση στη Χιλή, τις προσπάθειες των Χιλιανών να απαλλαγούν από τη σκιά της δικτατορίας Πινοσέτ και των βαθιά ριζωμένων συμφερόντων.

De los libros que he leído de la saga de Heredia, creo que este es de los mejores.

La historia transcurre en el Chile de los 90, en plena transición democrática y con ese optimismo en el ambiente por ser el “jaguar” de América Latina. En cuanto al caso a resolver, este está claramente inspirado en la venta de armas de Carlos Cardoen a los iraquíes, lo cual le otorga verosimilitud al libro.

La trama avanza un poco lenta, pero no por ello se torna aburrida, al contrario, creo que le agrega más tensión al libro. Además, se cumple con todo lo que debe tener una buena novela policial americana. Buenas descripciones del centro de Santiago, con sus cafés con pierna y bares de mala muerte; una fuerte crítica social, marcado por las dudas en torno al proceso de transición democrática y las continuidades de la dictadura; y, como no, una relación algo tormentosa entre el detective y una mujer atractiva.

Lo único que no me convence del libro es el personaje de Stevens. Creo que su presencia es demasiado conveniente para el óptimo desarrollo de los acontecimientos. No llega a arruinar el caso pero si le quita un poco de realismo.

This was a good read and kept me guessing right up until the end. It began well and made me become invested in the story very early on, something which does not easily happen. I love tales of corruption, fact or fiction and with the level of corruption that is occurring globally today it's difficulty whether novels are based on fact or fiction, but the intertwining of the chemical weaponry story into this investigation contributed well to she story, in much the same way as I enjoyed it woven into I Am Pilgrim when I read it many years ago. I'd give this book four stars and would recommend it to those who enjoy crime, thriller and corruption tales.

Chile noir.

I have liked this novel quite better than the previous one in the series, I must confess.

While I do not connect with detective Heredia (too much ladies' man for me and also there is nothing to make him stand out in the literary sea of tough guys with more cultured side in them), I see that his personality can work for the genre of political noir, which this novel is for me. Generally the plot moves fine, the politics-connected mystery is good and the information about Chile is worth learning about.

This book is mostly set in Santiago, Chile and Las Cruces, Chile (briefly) post the terrors of Pinochet’s dictatorship. It intertwined themes of illegal arms sales from Chile to other countries outside of the continent; which interests the CIA, intelligence, journalists, corrupt police, Miami, California, England, invisible power networks of the past dictatorship, and murky situations involving scientists, and private investigator Heredia.

Díaz Eterovic is one of Chile’s best known writers of the crime story genre.

Forse il più faticoso della serie: in quanto temi ed avvenimenti.
Ángeles y solitarios tratta della corruzione del potere ed il traffico di armi. Nella trama si intravede una profonda e acuta critica ai poteri che attuano di nascosto, nell’oscurità e che erodono il sistema sociopolitico.
Il detective Heredia, il suo perspicace gatto Simenon e l’innocente Anselmo nel suo chiosco di giornali sono alcuni dei protagonisti di questo capitolo di intrighi dove l’agilità dei dialoghi, l’humor e l’ironia impongono il ritmo.

look I picked this one because we have the same last name so I wanted to like it. unfortunately, it was tough for me. it was very descriptive of like a lot of settings and a lot of emotions which was not what I was looking for. while the plot was definitely interesting, I honestly was super lost and felt like I should've drawn a diagram. but it was good writing (especially considering it's a translation) and I did like a lot of the characters

Νουάρ αστυνομική ιστορία υψηλού ρυθμού που εμπλέκεται με τη χιλιανή πολιτική μετά τα χρόνια της τρομοκρατίας του Πινοσέτ καθώς και με τις διεθνείς συναλλαγές όπλων, η οποία είναι συνάμα προικισμένη και με διανοητικό περιεχόμενο. Δεδομένης της ανόδου του εθνικισμού καθώς και της αυξανόμενης ισχύος του στρατιωτικού βιομηχανικού συμπλέγματος σε ολόκληρο τον πλανήτη, το βιβλίο αυτό εξακολουθεί να παραμένει αξιανάγνωστο και επίκαιρο.

Un libro que hace pensar, recordar y reflexionar en todas las atrocidades vividas en Chile durante la dictadura militar, con toda la red de poder que ha permanecido Intocable durante los gobiernos de cualquier tendencia. La historia policial que debe desenmarañar es nada menos que la de una mujer a la que amó. Un libro cargado de afectos cercanos a Heredia y lleno de emociones que logran trascender las páginas escritas.

Primer libro de Díaz Eterovic que leo y creo abrirá la puerta a varios más de este autor. Es fluido, por lo que no se generan trabas en su lectura. La historia es entretenida por lo que dan ganas de extender el tiempo destinado previamente a su lectura. Eso sí, el personaje principal que es el detective Heredia, es más 'abacanado' de lo esperado en su rol de investigador y amante. Eso le quita realismo y me recordó constantemente que es una ficción

Podría ser 3.5, pero me gusta el personaje del detective Heredia. Su forma de ser, sus citas literarias, su sentido de la amistad, su ironía.
Pero de nuevo la historia fue un poco inverosímil, como la tercera novela de la saga.
Me gustó también la ambientación en el centro de Santiago de principios de los ‘90, cuando se construía la línea 5 del metro y se demolía la cárcel pública

Ένα πολύ ωραίο σύγχρονο νουάρ, που διαδραματίζεται στο Σαντιάγο της Χιλής και μας μεταφέρει στις σκοτεινές πτυχές όχι μόνο του υποκόσμου αλλά και όσων άφησε πίσω η μακρόχρονη δικτατορία.

I can see that other people liked this book, but I didn't. I couldn't relate to the characters. I'm not even sure if the main character is a man or a woman. And I didn't like the conversations they had with the cat.

Me encanta el detective heredia, pero este libro en especial no me gustó.

Me costó terminar el libro, repartí las últimas 50 paginas en una semana porque no quería seguir leyendo.

Si ya sabíamos que Heredia es un ser despreciable este libro nos muestra su peor faceta.
