Tina Turner, one of the world’s most beloved performers, reveals the joyful wisdom behind her inspirational life story in her powerful new book about finding happiness, hope and love in your own life, "Happiness Becomes You: A Guide to Changing Your Life for Good."
A legendary singer, Tina has sold more concert tickets than any other solo artist in history. After her early hit songs including “Proud Mary,” her well-publicized hardships forced her to disappear from the music scene. She rebuilt her life by tapping into her spiritual strength and rose up to recreate her career with a string of megahits including her multi-platinum album "Private Dancer." During her 50th Anniversary Tour in 2009 she performed for more than a million fans.
My Love Story by Tina Turner can be categorized as one of my favorite memoirs of 2019. I just finished it this week and I’m so happy I picked it up. I read it word for word from beginning to end and enjoyed every single minute of it.
Tina Turner has been a massive inspiration to me since I was a young child. I love everything about her, yet early on knew nothing about her past struggles. Thinking back to some of her earliest music videos on MTV, particularly one of my favorites, “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, I fell in love with her voice, her style, her positivity, her fierceness–pretty much everything. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome became a favorite 80’s film; I thought her performance as Auntie Entity was fantastic. Her music and inspiration still remains a part of me today.
“And you know what I say to people who ask, “What do you do when all the odds are against you?” I say, “You keep going. You just don’t stop. No matter, if there’s one slap to the face, turn the other cheek. And the hurt you’re feeling? You can’t think about what’s being done to you now, or what has been done to you in the past. You just have to keep going.”
In this memoir, Tina Turner shares her recent history, beginning with her happy marriage to long- time boyfriend Erwin Bach in 2013. She also reflects on parts of her past: exposing times from her childhood in Nutbush, Tennessee as Anna May Bullock, the beginning of her career, her marriage to Ike Turner (including the abuse she endured), and how she finally got away and started creating her own music–on her own terms. She also writes about health problems she’s experienced (which I knew nothing about) and the friendships that she’s made over time. After watching the film What’s Love Got to Do with It, I was shocked with all that Tina had gone through. I appreciated that she shared her true thoughts in this book regarding the movie because I always wondered how accurate it was. Honestly, there’s so much more in this book! Some of her darkest times are revealed. Parts of it are incredibly sad, especially the ending which brought me to tears. After it all…how wonderful that Tina was able to find true love and then to experience her fairy tale wedding. It’s heartwarming.
I enjoyed the writing and organization of the book. Many pictures are shared in multiple sections (the vast majority I’d never seen). Once I started reading it, I simply didn’t want to put it down. This book is everything I wanted it to be.
My Love Story by Tina Turner is a 2018 Atria Books publication.
Simply the best-
Tina Turner is another artist who has been around my entire life. I remember seeing her perform Proud Mary on television back when I was a little kid and found Tina’s stage presence to be electrifying.
Still, it wasn’t until she released her solo album, back in the eighties, that I became a huge fan. I loved her MTV videos, her music, her voice, and her style. I knew she’d long ago dumped Ike Turner, but I didn’t know all the particulars. I had heard rumors he abused her, but I remained ignorant of how harrowing her life was until the movie, "What’s Love Got to Do with It” came out.
I still haven’t read, ‘I, Tina’, but I got the gist of the situation from watching the movie. So, of course, by now, most of us know Tina escaped a brutal marriage, walked away with nothing but her name, reinvented herself, and became a huge star. In other words, she personifies the word ‘inspirational’.
But, what about the second half of her life? What has Tina’ life been like since her rise to superstardom and beyond?
This second memoir by Tina Turner, is a not only about her humble beginnings, which she does spend some time on, including the years she spent married to Ike. It’s not just about her rise up from the ashes to meteoric fame, or the many great relationships she has forged over the years, both in her professional life, and in her personal life. It’s about her finding peace and contentment in Switzerland, it’s about finding true love with her second husband, Edwin Bach. This is her real love story. However, Tina also reveals her myriad of health concerns, none of which I was aware of before reading this book.
Tina is so refreshing. Musical memoirs are risky business with me. I often come away wishing I hadn’t read one of these books because the featured artist is so self- absorbed or so out of touch with what is going on in the world, I lose respect. Tina’s story, even the parts we’re familiar with, is a fascinating testament and an inspiration to so many people. Her music stands the test of time and her attitude towards her audience and fans is one I wish more professionals would adopt.
I enjoyed being a part of her shared memories and her success, and hearing about the life she’s forged with Edwin. Her approach is often humorous, at times shy, and maybe even a little embarrassed or chagrined by some of her mistakes, or moments of uncertainty. As with any celebrity memoir, I couldn’t relate to everything Tina is involved with, nor do I agree with all her philosophies.
I also found myself cringing a time or two as she went into more details than I really needed her to when describing her health issues and the various symptoms she had to cope with. But, I did love her tenacity, and the way her husband protects her, helped to keep her spirits up, and went above and beyond for her. I also thought she faced her illnesses with optimistic bravery.
I was happy to hear she is still holding her own, still interested in decorating her home and I love that she’s involved in the musical production about her life which has been very well received. Sadly, though, Tina has endured still more tragedy and I do hope she finds a way to get through it, as she has vowed to do.
Once again, I am struck by how many layers there are to this amazing and talented performer. Watching her amazing metamorphosis over the years, is incredible. She’s earned her right to enjoy retirement and the lovely surroundings of her home and adopted country. I am happy she’s found real and true love and hope she has many more years left to enjoy her time with Edwin and that the musical will be a huge hit on Broadway when it comes to America.
Why I chose to listen to this audiobook: 1. shortly after Tina Turner's death at 83 on May 24, 2023, I watched (again!) the heart-wrenching movie What's Love Got to Do With It, the 1993 film adaptation of Ms. Turner's earlier memoir, I, Tina (1986). Because a lot has happened in Ms. Turner's life since the publication of that memoir, I was very pleased to find this most recent release (2018); 2. I love this woman's music; and, 3. September 2023 is my "Memoirs & Biographies" Month!
Praises: 1. since I haven't read I, Tina, I was relieved to hear that in this newest memoir, Ms. Turner included her early chaotic years as a child from a broken home to her tumultuous business and personal life and harrowing escape from husband, Ike Turner, and his physical abusiveness and domineering control; 2. what Tina goes on to share in this particular memoir includes: - how she gradually built up her own independent career through hard work and her professional relationships with various managers, record companies, and larger-than-life artists; - her new songs and albums and the stories behind them; - her children and especially the heartbreaking memory of her eldest son, Craig's suicide in 2018; - why she chose to live in Europe; - her initial meeting and eventual marriage to Erwin Bach, 16 years her junior (and yes, she discusses the flak she received about that!); - her various health issues that she fought and overcame in her later years, including a kidney transplant; - her thoughts about Tina: The Tina Turner Musical; 3. Tina shares some information never before revealed to the public prior to the publication of this memoir; 4. Heather Alicia Simms does an excellent narration! It was; however, a real treat that the Prologue was read aloud by Tina Turner herself! and, 5. the print copy contains 25 pages of black & white and color photos!
Tiny Niggles: 1. even though Ms. Turner talks about her legs (I would kill to have legs like hers!), I was a little disappointed that she never mentioned that she had them insured for 3.2 million dollars! and, 2. I would have loved to hear at least some snippets of her more popular songs (like Dolly Parton did with her audiobook Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics), but I'm not taking away any stars for that!
Overall Thoughts: If you've read I, Tina, you may find portions of this memoir repetitive, or it may be a great refresher. If you're a true fan, it wouldn't matter one way or another! Either way, you'll find that this "love story" focuses on all the relationships in her life, be it strained and toxic, or respectful and loving. Both audio and print formats are fantastic, but the print version contains those awesome photos!
To the "Queen of Rock 'n Roll", you've come a long way! Rest in peace.
This is an honest and very candid memoir from the ‘Queen of Rock’ Tina Turner. From her childhood in Nutbush, Tennessee to her present day life with her loving husband Erwin Bach. Most people think of Tina Turner in association with her tumultuous life with Ike Turner. But there is so much more than this to be revealed of her life before and after Ike. I, personally loved this book and plan to read it again. Tina had a belief that no matter the cards life deals one must just move on, keep going, and live life to its best. 5 beautiful stars for the memoir of a woman who was a legend in her day and to this day.
“My Love Story” written by Tina Turner (1939-) is one of the best inspiring memoirs from 2018. Tina’s candid story highlights her extraordinary career and the changes she made in her life that brought her phenomenal success and superstardom. Tina lives in Switzerland with her second husband German music producer Erwin Bach (1956-).
Tina begins her story with her enchanting fairy tale wedding which took place on Lake Zurich, Switzerland (2013). By the time Tina and Erwin married, Tina felt she was a first time bride. Her marriage to Ike Turner (1962-1978) had been a hasty ceremony in seedy Tijuana, Mexico. Ike had determined it was in his best interest to marry and avoid paying any sum of money to ex-wives. Tina revealed how terrible her wedding night to Ike really was. Her fans get a true sense of how hard it must have been for her to re-marry (after Ike) and when she and Erwin married, how it was necessary to have a wedding memory she would cherish for the rest of her life—she certainly deserved it. In the 1960’s the Ike and Tina Turner Review got their start playing in smaller venues and clubs. Tina got ready to perform sometimes in a small closet with a single overhead light bulb. Ike controlled every detail of her music, performance and life together. Tina had her own style about how she wanted to sing and perform onstage-- "creative differences" with Ike would result in a barrage of verbal abuse and too often physical assault. In many ways, Tina’s marriage to Ike somewhat mirrored the neglectful and often abusive mother-daughter relationship. As a small child, Tina instinctively knew she was unwanted: her mother abandoned their family, predictability creating a tremendous hardship. Although her relationship with her mother was usually difficult and strained, Tina provided housing and care for her mother until her death. It wasn’t until Tina fled her marriage to Ike that her career began to take off. In the 1980’s Tina was at the peak of her career with her “Private Dancer Tour” (1985). Tina appeared with David Bowie, Brian Adams and The Rolling Stones, this “come-back” tour is regarded as one of the most spectacular in music history, her albums sold multi- millions in copies, and earned Tina numerous awards including a Double-Grammy.
Tina toured once again before she retired, but realized quickly that even with the help of wigs, costumes, and enormous staffing and other support she would no longer tour. As she aged she was plagued with several serious health issues including stokes and the need for kidney dialysis. Even great wealth doesn’t shelter one from hardship and adversity: Tina shared the tragic loss and impact of her first born son Craig Turner (1959-2018) suicide death at his Studio City, California home. Despite these extreme conditions Tina remains positive and optimistic about her future; her amazingly remarkable spirit shines throughout her book for a truly great unforgettable read.
I'm limited here by five stars. This deserves more, possibly because I'm a huge fan and possibly because this lady has overcome more than I could ever imagine. She has earned every moment of happiness.
I read I, Tina many years ago, and remember loving it, so I was looking forward to this later memoir of hers, from 2018. I had read a few extracts online, so I knew it covered her more recent health struggles, and also focused on her relationship with her husband Erwin Bach. I've pretty much always loved Tina Turner, and she is also one of the few singers that I loved as a kid and still enjoy today. My musical tastes ended up moving quite far away from a lot of the artists I loved when I was younger, but I could still happily listen to one of her albums on repeat. I enjoyed revisiting some of her songs that I hadn't listened to for a while as I read this, especially that famous performance of 'Tonight' with David Bowie.
She discusses her relationship with Ike Turner, which really feels more like business deal than a marriage. I had some sympathy for him, because he was his own worst enemy in every possible way, and you can't help but wonder what his life could have been if he had had access to education, or even if he hadn't started taking cocaine. Still, I would have more compassion for him if he hadn't treated those around him so abysmally. It is a wonderful moment when she does finally leave him, though as is often the case he continued to a threatening figure. She felt safer when she was out of America, out of his reach, which is hardly surprising.
Her relationship with Erwin was lovely to read about. Since they have been together for decades she is able to provide a wonderful testament to possibility of moving past a bad marriage and finding lasting happiness. The wedding pictures included were some of my favourites.
The chapters where she talks about the support of the Rolling Stones and David Bowie were another highlight. While there is something frustrating about the fact that people needed her talent to be validated by famous men before they would take her seriously on her own, I appreciate that those famous men spoke so highly of her.
Her health struggles, which included a stroke, cancer, kidney failure and vertigo were a lot to deal with, especially as so much happened at once. I hadn't realised that vertigo could be so debilitating-- of the health issues she had, that was the only one that I knew nothing about, so I feel I picked up quite a bit there.
There is a HBO documentary coming out soon that I would like to watch as a follow up to this, though that depends on what channel airs it here in NZ, as I don't think we have an actual HBO channel. Hopefully it will be released on DVD!
"My Love Story" by Tina Turner is an extraordinary audiobook that left me inspired and moved by the incredible journey of this iconic music legend. From the very first chapter, I was captivated by Tina's raw honesty and unwavering resilience. The link to the audiobook can be found here My Love Story, prepare to be swept away by Tina Turner's indomitable spirit and her remarkable journey through life and love.
In "My Love Story," Tina shares her personal triumphs and tribulations, taking listeners through the highs and lows of her life and career. From her early days as a young singer to her tumultuous relationship with her ex-husband, Ike Turner, and ultimately finding true love, Tina's story is a testament to the power of determination and self-discovery.
What sets "My Love Story" apart is Tina's unwavering spirit and her ability to rise above adversity. Her words are filled with strength, grace, and wisdom, making it impossible not to feel inspired and empowered. Through her journey, she reminds us of the importance of self-love, perseverance, and staying true to oneself.
The audiobook narration by Tina Turner herself adds an extra layer of authenticity and emotion. Her voice carries the weight of her experiences, and her delivery is both captivating and heartfelt. It felt as if I was sitting down with Tina, listening to her share her story firsthand.
If you're a fan of Tina Turner or simply seeking an incredible tale of resilience and love, "My Love Story" is a must-listen.
Tina Turner's resilience and positive attitude are just impressive, but the most interesting part is how much her personal story seems to say about her home country and its society. Music nerds who are mainly interested in the back stories to all of her songs, albums, videos and tours will be disappointed by this book, because it focuses on Turner's view of the world and how she dealt with the numerous setbacks and challenges she faced throughout her life, including her loveless childhood, her abusive ex-husband Ike, and her recent and unfortunately ongoing health crisis. But we also hear about Turner's relationship with her second husband Erwin Bach and her life in Switzerland.
The text does a really good job conveying Turner's state of mind and what she makes of her own story, which, remarkably, she calls a love story. The closing chapter is particularly grim, but also brave, because Turner talks about the suicide of her son Craig, who killed himself on 07/03/18. As a child, Craig was treated badly by Ike and he suffered when his mother was away on tour, and Turner is very self-critical when trying to make sense of her own destiny and Craig's difficult life. It is remarkable how Turner comes across as a simple woman (not in the sense of stupid, mind you, but in the sense of being a pretty average person with an exceptional talent living in absolutely abnormal circumstances), but also as more honest than most celebrities - it's probably just another aspect of her bravery. It's pretty hard not to respect this woman for what she has achieved.
“I never felt loved, so I decided it wasn’t important. Not to me. I think I put up a kind of a shield against it. I told myself, “If you don’t care about me, that’s okay, I’ll go on. If you don’t love me, I’ll go on.” I’ll go on was my mantra before I ever knew what a mantra was.”
This book went into a little more detail and depth about Tina’s health and her past abuse with Ike. Nothing we didn’t know, just more severe as far as the dirty details of different accounts of the abuse. I hope Ike is burning in hell. There, I said it. He was a vile human who didn’t deserve to live.
This memoir solidified my love even more for Tina and her passing is a hard one to get over. She was a national treasure!
She had a way of making herself Sexy without making being sexual. David Bowe and Mick Jagger. The English loved her. It’s sad to think about how she felt more love overseas than she experienced here in the states. I for one love her, and her contribution to rock n roll as a Black woman, was immense.
Great book. I couldn’t stop reading it. I love it that she told so much in this book. About her childhood, about Ike, struggles in her career, health problems etc. You really get to know the woman that is Tina Turner.
810pm ~~ I honestly don't remember if I read Tina Turner's earlier memoir, but I did see the movie with Angela Bassett so I knew a little about the nightmare side of the years with Ike Turner.
What I did not know was the rest of the story: how she fought to be her own person and run her own life without having to kneel to anyone.
I was thrilled to see how she found everlasting love with Erwin and was able to enjoy that love for so many years.
The book was published in 2018 and it eases my heart to think that she had at least a few more years of happiness and love before she passed just a couple of weeks ago on May 24.
Thank you for being you, Tina, and for sharing yourself with us for so many years. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

5 Stars for My Love Story (audiobook) by Tina Turner read by Heather Alicia Simms. I have followed Tina Turner’s story from the time she left Ike. I remember when some of the music industry got behind her and started promoting her. From a kids prospective she kind of came out of nowhere and became a star over night. That’s how it seemed to me at the time. But as she gained more success the real story came out and I’ve been fascinated by her story ever since. Tina retells the stories of her life and career in this book. Many of them we have heard before but they are told this time with more perspective. A lot has gone on in her life sense she was touring the world singing and dancing and she catches us up on all of that too. This is such an amazing story. This is a must read for all of her fans.
What a sad but interesting book. I found out things about Tina that I didn’t know. Her health problems and her marriage to Ike. She came across as quite a genuine person and not a diva as some big stars are. I really enjoyed this insight into her life.
I didn't even know this book existed until Tina Turner died and I did a deep dive into all things Tina Turner. Last month I read Tina's more famous memoir I, Tina which was the basis of one of my favorite movies Whats Love Got To Do With It. While I personally enjoyed that book more, I did appreciate this book in a different way.
My Love Story not only builds on the stories told in I, Tina but it also explores more fun aspects of her life. We get all the Ike abuse stories but we also get to know her second husband Erwin Bach and her later years in Switzerland.
Tina Turner was not only one of the greatest Rock & Roll performers of all time but she was a great storyteller. She tells her story in an honest way that never makes you feel like she's trying to paint herself as better than others.
I would recommend both her memoirs but definitely read I, Tina first.
Tina Turner is the Queen of Rock and Roll and she will definitely be missed.
Tina Turner is the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, a musical icon celebrating her 60th year in the industry. In this dramatic autobiography, she tells the story of a truly remarkable life in the spotlight.
From her early years picking cotton in Nutbush, Tennessee to her rise to fame alongside Ike Turner, and finally to her phenomenal success in the 1980s and beyond, Tina candidly examines her personal history, from her darkest hours to her happiest moments and everything in between.
In her honest and heart-felt voice, Tina reveals:
How (love) and a kidney transplant saved her life - and how her new husband made an incredible personal sacrifice. How she has coped with the tragic suicide of her son. How ex-husband Ike Turner forced her to go to a brothel on their wedding night... and why she tried to kill herself because of Ike's mistresses. The Cinderella moment when David Bowie made Tina a star and the day Mick Jagger ripped her skirt off!
A powerful, open and honest biography, with shocking information about her recent health issues, I personally had no idea what a tough ride Tina Turner had been on, yes Ike Turner, yes the hard work to make her amazing comeback in 1983-1984, and the enormous success with the release of "Private Dancer", and a few years of long tough touring.
Very open of her later years and the decision to retire, the exhaustion of working on the stage, touring, shocked at the collection of health problems from, Kidney Problems, dialysis, High Blood Pressure, Cancer and a stroke, what a tough last few years.
This was such an emotional read from start to finish what a beautiful lady she was and should still be remembered for that I’m so glad she found happiness after Ike and she’s with her children in heaven now RIP Tina
This was a terrific memoir told in a style that gave readers the feeling she was candidly talking about her life while sitting across from us in her living room. I'm sure there was much that Tina didn't talk about but what she did write was full of intimate details and events that have not been mentioned before such as her marriage to Ike (the "honeymoon" event was horrendous) and his transgressions, her relationship with Erwin and subsequent marriage (IMO, the marriage ceremony portion was a little TOO detailed), her recent health battles (stroke, cancer, kidney transplant), and her son's fairly recent suicide. I had great respect for Tina before reading this book but now admire her even more.
I honestly can't remember much of I, TINA, so unsure if some of this content was duplicated but I feel comfortable in thinking there is no need to read it as I believe this book will be sufficient for those who want to know more about her life. [If others feel differently, let me know in the comments.]
I did so want to give this five stars but even though I felt Tina was honest and open in her storytelling, there was a wee element of thinking much was omitted, and that's OK as it is her story to tell; I guess we don't know to know everything!
I bumped into this book at the library on the day following the sad news of Tina Turner's death. She was only 83 years old, not as long a life as is possible. I felt curious about her new husband and how her life had gone as I had previously read her ' i,Tina ' biography and wondered what happened next. I enjoyed all the great photos tucked in the pages. Mostly, I enjoyed hearing her voice chatting with the reader as she shared the many dramas and pivotal moments in her life. It is gratifying to think that all the cruel evil inflicted upon her by Ike was washed away by the deep contentment of a huge solo career and definitely finally falling into true love at last.
I’m a fan of Tina’s, I liked her unique voice, her songs and, with the minis and those high heels, her Queen of Rock 'n' Roll persona. If you got it, flaunt it, baby! I didn’t read her first autobiography, but I knew about her emotional relationships with her mother and the very public break up with Ike. From this memoir I learned more about her life, especially the later years, her battle with illnesses and her new found love.
To be honest, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I was expecting, her tone is often self-congratulatory and even a bit arrogant. She comes across very defensive about her poor life choices, and, despite Tina’s repetitive denial, a proper diva to me, too much attached to material things, like the cars, expensive shoes and outfits, houses, etc. Still one cannot but admire her energy and talent. Good on you Tina. 2.5 stars
I had the wonderful opportunity to watch Tina Turner perform live three times an absolute superstar. The book was amazing Tina Turner’s trials, tribulations, honesty and showing what an incredible performer and loving person Tina Turner was.
I don't know what it was about this book but once it got started it was really hard for me to stop. I like Tina Turner, knew her history, remember when she became "big" with Private Dancer. But this closer look at her life made me really admire her, made me wish she was touring yet as I'd definitely go. As I listened to this book I found myself stopping often around the time she left Ike and started on her own. She would mention songs, places, people, things she was doing in her life and I had to google them. I watched so many videos of that time, then I went back and watch some from her time with Ike. The whole time I watched all I could think was how happy she looked when she was performing, no matter the age. And wow!!! How fantastic she looked in her 40's performing. The short dresses, the big hair, the dance moves, her booming voice. I'm very happy that in her later life that Tina found happiness that she found a place to belong, she deserve that and so much more!
Tina Turner has always been one of the most electrifying entertainers of our time. This memoir certainly takes the reader on an astonishing ride, even though we fans of Tina were on the entertainment ride with her throughout her career. While we know some of the abuse she encountered when married to Ike, as you read her story, you are simply amazed that she found the courage to leave and save her life in the process.
From her turbulent life with Ike Turner to the love she never felt from her mother, then to her life and death diagnosis with various health challenges, sharing her new love life with her husband Erwin Bach, to the celebration of "Tina, The Tina Turner Musical," and then down to the tragic, heartwrenching death of her oldest son Craig, Tina candidly bears her heart and soul. You will appreciate the essence of this memoir.
I dare you to read My Love Story and not admire this woman. Talent, heart, perseverance -- she has true grit and the character many of us lack nowadays. Constantly tested throughout her life, she never gave up her dreams and she never surrendered her Self.
If asked to think about the music from my youth* (ages 9-12), three artists immediately come to mind: Whitney. Janet. Tina. All three women differ greatly from each other in just about every way -- from their upbringing to their voice, their sound, their lyrics, their public image. Yet all had a powerful impact on my young mind. These 3 women are quintessential 80s to me. And I also credit all 3 for flaming my young rebel spark.
However, I was unfamiliar with the women behind the artists. That is, until I watched the movie**, What's Love Got to Do With It. I didn't know at the time it was based on Tina Turner's own book, I, Tina. So, I had an idea about her early life, tribulations and triumphs. After reading, My Love Story, it's apparent the movie took creative liberties in delivering their story of Tina Turner.
What you'll read about in My Love Story is Tina's drive to achieve all that she dreamed she can be. She doesn't shy away from her mistakes. She doesn't gloss over her struggles. And she's not afraid to share her deepest vulnerabilities.
Structured around her relationship with Erwin Bach, their wedding, which Tina describes as the happiest day of her life, and the subsequent deterioration of her health. The narrative is pretty much chronological from her childhood to her early romances to meeting Ike Turner to leaving him to having to battle to reclaim her career to the hard work she put in to be the artist she always wanted to be.
She shares the stories behind her so-called comeback (though, she reminds the reader, she was never actually away) to the boosts she received from other artists like Cher and David Bowie.
She also mentions Beyoncé as a young artist much like herself. (I can totally see it!) And I respect Tina's view of her image, one she was quite deliberate about creating, one of being sexy without being threatening to other women. She said she's sexy without being sexual.
And, evidenced in her relationships with people like David Bowie and Oprah, Tina embodies the most valuable aspect of networking: true connection. So much of social media, online communities, and even in-person events are saturated by a gimme, gimme mindset. I really enjoyed reading about a legendary rock star who first and foremost creates relationships based on genuine interest and reciprocity rather than from a "What can this person do for me or my career" place.
Re-reading this "review" I realize I'm gushing, but this is a woman who deserves to be gushed over. I truly regret never getting to see her perform, but I'm thankful for her willingness to share of her personal life, to let us see the woman behind the star. As usual, Tina did not disappoint.
One disclaimer: The final chapter, about her son, is devastating. Be warned. I was a sobbing fool when I closed the book.
5 stars
*Naturally, if given a few more minutes to reminisce, other names also come to mind: Joan Jett, Taylor Dayne, Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam, Gloria Estefan, Bonnie Tyler, Heart, Pat Benatar. (This does not include my late 80s obsession with a little group known as NKOTB, but that's a whole other thing. lol)
**Or decades later, in 2018, when I watched the documentary Whitney about Whitney Houston's life and death.
Growing up with Turner’s music and having a vague recollection of her life-story, I was keen to read more about Tina Turner. Presented to the world as such a strong, independent woman, I wanted to learn about how Turner defied race and gender to become such a global superstar.
Great book! I love Tina Turner. My cousin gave me this for Christmas. Deep look inside her life that was seriously triumphant. It has wonderful photos too.
